We extend the theory of decomposable maps by giving a detailed description of k-positive maps. A relation between transposition and modular theory is established. The structure of positive maps in terms of modular theory (the generalized Tomita-Takesaki scheme) is examined.
Both completely positive and completely copositive maps stay decomposable under tensor powers, i.e under tensoring the linear map with itself. But are there other examples of maps with this property? We show that this is not the case: Any decomposable map, that is neither completely positive nor completely copositive, will lose decomposability eventually after taking enough tensor powers. Moreover, we establish explicit bounds to quantify when this happens. To prove these results we use a symmetrization technique from the theory of entanglement distillation, and analyze when certain symmetric …
We address two sets of long-standing open questions in probability theory, from a computational complexity perspective: divisibility of stochastic maps, and divisibility and decomposability of probability distributions. We prove that finite divisibility of stochastic maps is an NP-complete problem, and extend this result to nonnegative matrices, and completely-positive trace-preserving maps, i.e. the quantum analogue of stochastic maps. We further prove a complexity hierarchy for the divisibility and decomposability of probability distributions, showing that finite distribution divisibility is…
We present a generalization of the family of linear positive maps in $M_3$ proposed thirty years ago by Cho et al. (Linear Algebra Appl. ${\bf 171}$, 213 (1992)) as a generalization of the seminal Choi non-decomposable map. The necessary and sufficient conditions for decomposability are provided.
We analyze positivity of a tensor product of two linear qubit maps, $Φ_1 \otimes Φ_2$. Positivity of maps $Φ_1$ and $Φ_2$ is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for positivity of $Φ_1 \otimes Φ_2$. We find a non-trivial sufficient condition for positivity of the tensor product map beyond the cases when both $Φ_1$ and $Φ_2$ are completely positive or completely co-positive. We find necessary and (separately) sufficient conditions for $n$-tensor-stable positive qubit maps, i.e. such qubit maps $Φ$ that $Φ^{\otimes n}$ is positive. Particular cases of 2- and 3-tensor-stable positive qubit …
We study the so-called K-positive linear maps from B(L) into B(H) for finite dimensional Hilbert spaces L and H and give characterizations of the dual cone of the cone of K-positive maps. Applications are given to decomposable maps and PPT-states.
We consider the convex set of ( unital ) positive ( completely ) maps from a $C^*$ algebra $\cla$ to a von-Neumann sub-algebra $\clm$ of $\clb(\clh)$, the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $\clh$ and study its extreme points via its canonical lifting to the convex set of ( unital ) positive ( complete ) normal maps from $\hat{\cla}$ to $\clm$, where $\hat{\cla}$ is the universal enveloping von-Neumann algebra over $\cla$. If $\cla=\clm$ and a ( complete ) positive operator $τ$ is a unique sum of a normal and a singular ( complete ) positive maps. Furthermore, a unital comp…
This is a revised form of the previous paper in which we study cones of positive maps of B(H) into itself. We add the result that the dual cone of a symmetric mapping cone is itself a symmetric mapping cone. As applications we obtain characterizations of linear functionals with strong positivity conditions with respect to a class of mapping cones called symmetric mapping cones. Applications are given to separable and PPT-states.
Positive maps are useful for detecting entanglement in quantum information theory. Any entangled state can be detected by some positive map. In this paper, the relation between positive block matrices and completely positive trace-preserving maps is characterized. Consequently, a new method for constructing decomposable maps from positive block matrices is derived. In addition, a method for constructing positive but not completely positive maps from Hermitian block matrices is also obtained.
The full description of the set of positive maps $T: \qA \to \cB(\cH)$ ($\qA$ a $C^*$-algebra) is given. The approach is based on the simple prescription for selecting various types of positive maps. This prescription stems from the Grothendieck theory of projective tensor products complemented by the theory of tensor connes. In particular, the origin of non-decomposable maps is clarified.
In this paper, we investigate $Φ$-maps associated to a certain type of $α$-completely positive maps. We then prove a KSGNS (Kasparov--Stinespring--Gel'fand--Naimark--Segal) type theorem for $α$-completely positive maps on Krein $C^*$-modules and show that the minimal KSGNS construction is unique up to unitary equivalence. We also establish a covariant version of the KSGNS type theorem for a covariant $α$-completely positive map and study the structure of minimal covariant KSGNS constructions.
We consider entanglement witnesses arising from positive linear maps which generate exposed extremal rays. We show that every entanglement can be detected by one of these witnesses, and this witness detects a unique set of entanglement among those. Therefore, they provide a minimal set of witnesses to detect all entanglement in a sense. Furthermore, if those maps are indecomposable then they detect large classes of entanglement with positive partial transposes which have nonempty relative interiors in the cone generated by all PPT states. We also provide a one parameter family of indecomposabl…
We construct a new class of positive indecomposable maps in the algebra of `d x d' complex matrices. These maps are characterized by the `weakest' positivity property and for this reason they are called atomic. This class provides a new reach family of atomic entanglement witnesses which define important tool for investigating quantum entanglement. It turns out that they are able to detect states with the `weakest' quantum entanglement.
We consider applications of transfer operators (also known as Ruelle operators) to completely positive maps (CPT) in quantum information theory. It is described a correspondence between fixed points of CPT maps and certain Markov-invariant measures. We also obtain a definition of entropy induced by transfer operators and an exponential decay property for mixed-unitary channels.
Let $D$ be a space of $2\times n$ matrices. Then the face of the cone of all completely positive maps from $M_2$ into $M_n$ given by $D$ is an exposed face of the bigger cone of all decomposable positive linear maps if and only if the set of all rank one matrices in $D$ forms a subspace of $D$ together with zero and $D^\perp$ is spanned by rank one matrices.
This article provides sufficient conditions for positive maps on the Schatten classes $\mathcal J_{p}, 1\le p<\infty$ of bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space such that a corresponding Perron-Frobenius theorem holds. With applications in quantum information theory in mind sufficient conditions are given for a trace preserving, positive map on $\mathcal J_{1}$, the space of trace class operators, to have a unique, strictly positive density matrix which is left invariant under the map. Conversely to any given strictly positive density matrix there are trace preserving, positive maps for…
The notion of completely positive invariant conjugate-bilinear map in a partial *-algebra is introduced and a generalized Stinespring theorem is proven. Applications to the existence of integrable extensions of *-representations of commutative, locally convex quasi*-algebras are also discussed.
We link the study of positive quantum maps, block positive operators, and entanglement witnesses with problems related to multivariate polynomials. For instance, we show how indecomposable block positive operators relate to biquadratic forms that are not sums of squares. Although the general problem of describing the set of positive maps remains open, in some particular cases we solve the corresponding polynomial inequalities and obtain explicit conditions for positivity.
It is well known that so called Breuer-Hall positive maps used in entanglement theory are optimal. We show that these maps possess much more subtle property --- they are exposed. As a byproduct it proves that a Robertson map in the algebra of 4 x 4 complex matrices is not only extreme, which was already shown by Robertson, but also exposed.
Exposed positive maps in matrix algebras define a dense subset of extremal maps. We provide a sufficient condition for a positive map to be exposed. This is an analog of a spanning property which guaranties that a positive map is optimal. We analyze a class of decomposable maps for which this condition is also necessary.
Exposed positive maps in matrix algebras define a dense subset of extremal maps. We provide a class of indecomposable positive maps in the algebra of 2n x 2n complex matrices with n>1. It is shown that these maps are exposed and hence define the strongest tool in entanglement theory to discriminate between separable and entangled states.
It is shown that the family of so called Breuer-Hall maps in M_4(C) possesses strong spanning property and hence they are exposed in the convex cone of positive maps in M_4(C)
We provide a further analysis of the class of positive maps proposed ten years ago by Kossakowski. In particular we propose a new parametrization which reveals an elegant geometric structure and an interesting interplay between group theory and a certain class of positive maps.
Following an idea of Choi, we obtain a decomposition theorem for k-positive linear maps from Mm to Mn, where 2<=k<min{m,n}. As a consequence, we give an affirmative answer to Kye's conjecture (also solved independently by Choi) that every 2-positive linear map from M3 to M3 is decomposable.
We outline the scheme for quantization of classical Banach space results associated with some prototypes of dynamical maps and describe the quantization of correlations as well. A relation between these two areas is discussed.
A new method of analysing positive bistochastic maps on the algebra of complex matrices $M_{3}$ has been proposed. By identifying the set of such maps with a convex set of linear operators on $\mathbb{R}^{8}$, one can employ techniques from the theory of compact affine semigroups to obtain results concerning asymptotic properties of positive maps. It turns out that the idempotent elements play a crucial role in classifying the convex set into subsets, in which representations of extremal positive maps are to be found. It has been show that all positive bistochastic maps, extremal in the set of…
An alternative, geometrical proof of a known theorem concerning the decomposition of positive maps of the matrix algebra $M_{2}(\mathbb{C})$ has been presented. The premise of the proof is the identification of positive maps with operators preserving the Lorentz cone in four dimensions, and it allows to decompose the positive maps with respect to those preserving the boundary of the cone. In addition, useful conditions implying complete positivity of a map of $M_{2}(\mathbb{C})$ have been given, together with a sufficient condition for complete positivity of an extremal Schwarz map of $M_{n}(\…
Using Grothendieck approach to the tensor product of locally convex spaces we review a characterization of positive maps as well as Belavkin-Ohya characterization of PPT states. Moreover, within this scheme, \textit{ a generalization of the idea of Choi matrices for genuine quantum systems will be presented}.
We provide a straightforward generalization of a positive map in $M_3(\mathbb{C})$ considered recently by Miller and Olkiewicz \cite{Miller}. It is proved that these maps are optimal and indecomposable. As a byproduct we provide a class of PPT entangled states in $d \otimes d$.
Let $H$ and $K$ be (finite or infinite dimensional) complex Hilbert spaces. A characterization of positive completely bounded normal linear maps from ${\mathcal B}(H)$ into ${\mathcal B}(K)$ is given, which particularly gives a characterization of positive elementary operators including all positive linear maps between matrix algebras. This characterization is then applied give a representation of quantum channels (operations) between infinite-dimensional systems. A necessary and sufficient criterion of separability is give which shows that a state $ρ$ on $H\otimes K$ is separable if and only …
We use a new idea that emerged in the examination of exposed positive maps between matrix algebras to investigate in more detail the difference between positive maps on $M_2(C)$ and $M_3(C)$. Our main tool stems from classical Grothendieck theorem on tensor product of Banach spaces and is an older and more general version of Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism between positive maps and block positive Choi matrices. It takes into account the correct topology on the latter set that is induced by the uniform topology on positive maps. In this setting we show that in $M_2(C)$ case a large class of nice …
We construct a new class of positive indecomposable maps in the algebra of 'd x d' complex matrices. Each map is uniquely characterized by a cyclic bistochastic matrix. This class generalizes a Choi map for d=3. It provides a new reach family of indecomposable entanglement witnesses which define important tool for investigating quantum entanglement.
We consider transformation maps on the space of states which are symmetries in the sense of Wigner. Due to the convex nature of the space of states, the set of these maps has a convex structure. We investigate the possibility of a complete characterization of extreme maps of this convex body, to be able to contribute to the classification of positive maps. Our study provides a variant of Wigner's theorem originally proved for ray transformations in Hilbert spaces.
