We study certain probability measures on partitions of n=1,2,..., originated in representation theory, and demonstrate their connections with random matrix theory and multivariate hypergeometric functions.
Our measures depend on three parameters including an analog of the beta parameter in random matrix models. Under an appropriate limit transition as n goes to infinity, our measures converge to certain limit measures, which are of the same nature as one-dimensional log-gas with arbitrary beta>0.
The first main result says that averages of products of ``characteristic polynomials'' with respect to the limit measures are given by the multivariate hypergeometric functions of type (2,0). The second main result is a computation of the limit correlation functions for the even values of beta.
We establish the universal edge scaling limit of random partitions with the infinite-parameter distribution called the Schur measure. We explore the asymptotic behavior of the wave function, which is a building block of the corresponding kernel, based on the Schr{ö}dinger-type differential equation. We show that the wave function is in general asymptotic to the Airy function and its higher-order analogs in the edge scaling limit. We construct the corresponding higher-order Airy kernel and the Tracy-Widom distribution from the wave function in the scalins limit, and discuss its implication to t…
The paper studies scaling limits of random skew plane partitions confined to a box when the inner shapes converge uniformly to a piecewise linear function V of arbitrary slopes in [-1,1]. It is shown that the correlation kernels in the bulk are given by the incomplete Beta kernel, as expected. As a consequence it is established that the local correlation functions in the scaling limit do not depend on the particular sequence of discrete inner shapes that converge to V. A detailed analysis of the correlation kernels at the top of the limit shape and of the frozen boundary is given. It is shown …
We use the polynomial formulation of the holomorphic anomaly equations governing perturbative topological string theory to derive the free energies in a scaling limit to all orders in perturbation theory for any Calabi-Yau threefold. The partition function in this limit satisfies an Airy differential equation in a rescaled topological string coupling. One of the two solutions of this equation gives the perturbative expansion and the other solution provides geometric hints of the non-perturbative structure of topological string theory. Both solutions can be expanded naturally around strong coup…
We have used the Topological String Theory partition function in the scaling limit, to relate the Black Hole partition function and Topological String Theory partition function.
We obtain the double scaling asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients and the partition function at the critical point of the $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrix model with cubic potential. We prove that the recurrence coefficients admit an asymptotic expansion in powers of $N^{-2/5}$, and in the leading order the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients is given by a Boutroux tronquée solution to the Painlevé I equation. We also obtain the double scaling limit of the partition function, and we prove that the poles of the tronquée solution are limits of zeros of the partiti…
We study the partition functions associated with non-intersecting polymers in a random environment. By considering paths in series and in parallel, the partition functions carry natural notions of subadditivity, allowing the effective study of their asymptotics. For a certain choice of random environment, the geometric RSK correspondence provides an explicit representation of the partition functions in terms of a stochastic interface. Formally this leads to a variational description of the macroscopic behaviour of the interface and hence the free energy of the associated non-intersecting polym…
The multifractal structure underlying a self-similar measure stems directly from the weighted self-similar system (or weighted iterated function system) which is used to construct the measure. This follows much in the way that the dimension of a self-similar set, be it the Hausdorff, Minkowski, or similarity dimension, is determined by the scaling ratios of the corresponding self-similar system via Moran's theorem. The multifractal structure allows for our definition of scaling regularity and scaling zeta functions motivated by geometric zeta functions and, in particular, partition zeta functi…
Periodic Schur process is a generalization of the Schur process introduced in math.CO/0107056. We compute its correlation functions and their bulk scaling limits, and discuss several applications including asymptotic analysis of uniform measures on cylindric partitions, time-dependent extensions of the discrete sine kernel, and bulk limit behavior of certain measures on partitions introduced in hep-th/0306238 in connection with supersymmetric gauge theories.
The conventional double-scaling limit of an O(N)-symmetric quartic quantum field theory is inconsistent because the critical coupling constant is negative. Thus, at the critical coupling the Lagrangian defines a quantum theory with an upside-down potential whose energy appears to be unbounded below. Worse yet, the integral representation of the partition function of the theory does not exist. It is shown that one can avoid these difficulties if one replaces the original theory by its PT-symmetric analog. For a zero-dimensional O(N)-symmetric quartic vector model the partition function of the P…
We consider a generalization of the Schur process in which a partition evolves from the empty partition into an arbitrary fixed final partition. We obtain a double integral representation of the correlation kernel. For a special final partition with only one row, the edge scaling limit is also discussed by the use of the saddle point analysis. If we appropriately scale the length of the row, the limiting correlation kernel changes from the extended Airy kernel.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the first, second, and so on rows of stochastically decaying partitions. We establish that, with appropriate scaling in time and length, the sequence of rows converges to the Airy$_2$ line ensemble. This result was first established, in a more general setting, by Borodin and Olshanski, who relied on the determinantal structure of the Poissonized correlation functions. Our argument is based on a different, combinatorial approach, developed by Okounkov. This approach may be useful in other problems in which no determinantal structure is availabl…
We introduce and study a family of Markov processes on partitions. The processes preserve the so-called z-measures on partitions previously studied in connection with harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. We show that the dynamical correlation functions of these processes have determinantal structure and we explicitly compute their correlation kernels. We also compute the scaling limits of the kernels in two different regimes. The limit kernels describe the asymptotic behavior of large rows and columns of the corresponding random Young diagrams, and the behavior of the Young diagr…
Totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs) are boxed plane partitions with the maximum possible symmetry. We use the well-known representation of TSSCPPs as a dimer model on a honeycomb graph enclosed in one-twelfth of a hexagon with free boundary to express them as perfect matchings of a family of non-bipartite planar graphs. Our main result is that the edges of the TSSCPPs form a Pfaffian point process, for which we give explicit formulas for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix. Preliminary analysis of these correlations are then used to give a precise conjecture for the limit …
We construct Pfaffian L-ensembles related to the z-measures on partitions and to the Plancherel measures on partitions with the Jack parameters 1/2 or 2. The results imply that these measures on partitions lead to Pfaffian point processes, and the correlation kernels of these processes can be expressed in terms of the corresponding L-matrices. We give explit formulae for these L-matrices.
In this paper we define the shifted Schur process as a measure on sequences of strict partitions. This process is a generalization of the shifted Schur measure introduced in [TW] and [Mat] and is a shifted version of the Schur process introduced in [OR]. We prove that the shifted Schur process defines a Pfaffian point process. We further apply this fact to compute the bulk scaling limit of the correlation functions for a measure on strict plane partitions which is an analog of the uniform measure on ordinary plane partitions. As a byproduct, we obtain a shifted analog of the famous MacMahon's …
Using techniques from integrable systems, we obtain a number of exact results for random partitions. In particular, we prove a simple formula for correlation functions of what we call the Schur measure on partitions (which is a far reaching generalization of the Plancherel measure, see math.CO/9905032) and also show that these correlations functions are tau-functions for the Toda lattice hierarchy. Also we give a new proof of the formula due to Bloch and the author, see alg-geom/9712009, for the so called n-point functions of the uniform measure on partitions and comment on the local structure…
This work concerns both the semiclassical and zero temperature asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. The partition function for quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers can be interpreted in terms of the energy distri- bution of a quantum Bose gas with vanishing fugacity. We compute the leading semi- classical term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \ra 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple single and double Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and …
I develop a transfer matrix algorithm for computing the exact partition function of a square lattice polymer with nearest-neighbor interaction, by extending a previous algorithm for computing the total number of self-avoiding walks. The computation time scales as ~1.6^N with the chain length N, in contrast to the explicit enumeration where the scaling is ~ 2.7^N. The exact partition function can be obtained faster with the transfer matrix method than with the explicit enumeration, for N>25. The new results for up to N=42 are presented.
We consider a random process with discrete time formed by singular values of products of truncations of Haar distributed unitary matrices. We show that this process can be understood as a scaling limit of the Schur process, which gives determinantal formulas for (dynamical) correlation functions and a contour integral representation for the correlation kernel. The relation with the Schur processes implies that the continuous limit of marginals for q-distributed plane partitions coincides with the joint law of singular values for products of truncations of Haar-distributed random unitary matric…
We consider dimer model on a hexagonal lattice. This model can be seen as a "pile of cubes in the box". The energy of configuration is given by the volume of the pile and the partition function is computed by the classical MacMahon formula or, more formally, by the determinant of Kasteleyn matrix. We use the expression for the partition function to derive the scaling behavior of free energy in the limit of lattice mesh tending to zero and temperature tending to infinity. We consider the cases of finite hexagonal domain, of infinite height box and coordinate-dependent Boltzmann weights. We obta…
The paper deals with the z-measures on partitions with the deformation (Jack) parameters 2 or 1/2. We provide a detailed explanation of the representation-theoretic origin of these measures, and of their role in the harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group.
We consider the two-dimensional self-avoiding walk (SAW) in a simply connected domain that contains the origin. The SAW starts at the origin and ends somewhere on the boundary. The distribution of the endpoint along the boundary is expected to differ from the SLE partition function prediction for this distribution because of lattice effects that persist in the scaling limit. We give a precise conjecture for how to compute this lattice effect correction and support our conjecture with simulations. We also give a precise conjecture for the lattice corrections that persist in the scaling limit of…
We investigate a decomposition of a unital Lindblad dynamical map of an open quantum system into two distinct types of mapping on the Hilbert-Schmidt space of quantum states. One component of the decomposed map corresponds to reversible behaviours, while the other to irreversible characteristics. For a finite dimensional system, we employ real vectors or Bloch representations and express a dynamical map on the state space as a real matrix acting on the representation. It is found that rotation and scaling transformations on the real vector space, obtained from the real-polar decomposition, for…
We consider the problem of computation of the correlation functions for the z-measures with the deformation (Jack) parameters 2 or 1/2. Such measures on partitions are originated from the representation theory of the infinite symmetric group, and in many ways are similar to the ensembles of Random Matrix Theory of $β=4$ or $β=1$ symmetry types. For a certain class of such measures we show that correlation functions can be represented as Pfaffians including $2\times 2$ matrix valued kernels, and compute these kernels explicitly. We also give contour integral representations for correlation kern…
We study the partition function of a two-dimensional Coulomb gas on a circle, in the presence of external pointlike charges, in a double scaling limit where both the external charges and the number of gas particles are large. Our original motivation comes from studying amplitudes for multi-string emission from a decaying D-brane in the high energy limit. We analyze the scaling limit of the partition function and calculate explicit results. We also consider applications to random matrix theory. The partition functions can be related to random scattering, or to weights of lattice paths in certai…
