A new explanation for the longstanding puzzle of the tiny branching fraction of psi' --> rho pi relative to that for J/psi --> rho pi was proposed. In the case of J/psi, we argue that this decay is dominated by a higher Fock state in which the c cbar pair is in a color-octet ^3S_1 state and annihilates via the process c cbar --> q qbar. In the case of the psi', we argue that the probability for the c cbar c pair in this higher Fock state to be close enough to annihilate is suppressed by a dynamical effect related to the small energy gap between the mass of the psi' and the D Dbar threshold.
The open charm effects via intermediate hadron loop transitions seem to play a crucial role in the understanding of several existing "puzzles" in charmonium exclusive decays, such as the $ψ(3770)$ non-$D\bar{D}$ decays, and "$ρπ$ puzzle" etc. In the charmonium energy region, non-perturbative mechanisms could be still sizeable, and as a consequence the intermediate hadron loop transitions also provide a mechanism for the helicity-selection-rule (HSR) violation. We report our recent progress on those existing puzzles.
We study in the framework of a constituent quark model the possible contributions of molecular structures to the XYZ charmonium like states. We analyze simultaneously the $c\bar{c}$ structures and the possible molecular components in a formalism which allows us to treat channels below and above thresholds. The only molecular state found in the $1^{++}$ sector correspond to the X(3872). Molecular resonances also appear with other quantum numbers. So, the so called Y(3940) and the X(3915) are suggested to be $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ charmonium states. In the $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ sector we also found significa…
The theoretical explanations about the ``Rho-pi puzzle'' in charmonium decays are reviewed extensively, and the comparison of theoretical predications with experimental data is made whenever possible. Three methods to estimate the ratio of the branching fractions of J/psi and psi' decays are also discussed. It is pointed out that in order to understand the Rho-pi puzzle, and the dynamics of charmonium decays, systematic studies should be made in theory, phenomenology and experiment aspects.
Meson-charmonium dissociation reactions governed by the quark interchange are studied with temperature-dependent quark potentials. Quark-antiquark relative-motion wave functions and masses of charmonia and charmed mesons are determined by the central spin-independent part of the potentials or by the central spin-independent part and a smeared spin-spin interaction. The prominent temperature dependence of the masses is found. Based on the potentials, the wave functions, and the meson masses, we obtain temperature-dependent cross sections for fifteen pion-charmonium and rho-charmonium dissociati…
Using the method of QCD Sum Rules, we estimate the energy of the lowest hybrid Charmonium state, and find it to be at the energy of the $Ψ'(2S)$ state, about 600 Mev above the $J/Ψ(1S)$ state. Since our solution is not consistent with a pure hybrid at this energy, we conclude that the $Ψ'(2S)$ state is probably an admixed $c \bar{c}$ and hybrid $c \bar{c}g$ state. From this conjecture we find a possible explanation of the famous $ρ-π$ puzzle.
By analyzing existing data on pseudoscalar charmonium decays, we obtain the ratio of the branching fractions of $η_c(2S)$ and $η_c$ decays into ten different final states with light hadrons. For the first time, we test the two existing theoretical predictions of these decays, and find that the experimental data are significantly different from both of them. The lack of observation of any decay mode with higher rate in $η_c(2S)$ than in $η_c$ decays suggests very unusual decay dynamics in pseudoscalar charmonium decays to be identified. We also report the first model-independent evaluation of t…
The ratio of branching fractions Br(X(3872) --> gamma J/psi)/ Br(X(3872) --> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) is studied by assuming that the X(3872) --> pi^+ pi^- J/psi decay proceeds through the rho^0 meson pole which is caused by the omega-rho^0 mixing. As the result, it is seen that the calculated ratio is compatible with the measured values of the ratio when X(3872) is an axial-vector tetra-quark state, while it would be much larger than the measurements when it is a charmonium. Therefore, the existing data on the ratio seem to favor the tetra-quark interpretation of X(3872) over the charmonium, although…
We propose a new explanation for the longstanding puzzle of the tiny branching fraction of psi' -> rho pi relative to that for J/psi -> rho pi. In the case of J/psi, we argue that this decay is dominated by a higher Fock state in which the ccbar pair is in a color-octet ^3S_1 state and via annihilate process ccbar -> qqbar. In the case of the psi', we argue that the probability for the ccbar pair in this higher Fock state to be close enough to annihilate is suppressed by a dynamical effect related to the small energy gap between the mass of the psi' and the DDbar threshold.
The efforts of Roy-Sridhar-Close-Cho-Wise-Trivedi to resolve the CDF $ψ'$ anomaly with cascades from above-threshold $χ^\prime_c$ states require well defined signature states require well defined signatures [a small total width and a large branching fraction for $\cp \ra γ+ \pp]$ for the solution to be viable. Here we estimte the production of such states from $BR (B \ra \cp + X)BR (\cp \ra γ\pp)$ and $γγ$ production of $χ^\prime_{c2}$ at CLEO II, and comment on the feasbility of testing the hypothesis in terms of current experimental capabilities.
We point out that the B -> rho rho data have seriously constrained the possibility of resolving the B -> pi pi puzzle from the large observed B^0 -> pi^0 pi^0 branching ratio in the available theoretical approaches. The next-to-leading-order (NLO) contributions from the vertex corrections, the quark loops, and the magnetic penguin evaluated in the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach have saturated the experimental upper bound of the B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 branching ratio, and do not help. The NLO PQCD predictions for the B^0 -> rho^\mp rho^\pm and B^\pm -> rho^\pm rho^0 branching ratios are consisten…
Some discrepancies between theory and experiment in the B -> pi K decays suggest the possibility of a new physics contribution with the structure of an electroweak penguin amplitude. If such a scenario is realised in nature, the branching ratios of the decays B_s -> phi pi and B_s -> phi rho can be enhanced by about one order of magnitude. We review and update the current status of the B -> pi K puzzle and its implications for the decays B_s -> phi pi and B_s -> phi rho.
An outstanding mystery of charmonium physics is why the J/ψdecays prominently to pseudoscalar plus vector meson channels, such as J/ψ-> ρπand J/ψ-> K^*K, whereas the ψ'(2S) does not. We show that such decays of J/ψand their suppression for ψ'(2S) follow naturally from the existence of intrinsic charm |qbar q cbar c> Fock components of the light vector mesons.
An interesting controversy has emerged challenging the widely accepted nature of the $X(3915)$ and the $X(3930)$ resonances, which had initially been assigned to the $χ_{c0}(2P)$ and $χ_{c2}(2P)$ $c\bar c$ states, respectively. To unveil their inner structure, the properties of the $J^{PC}\!\!=\!0^{++}$ and $J^{PC}\!\!=\!2^{++}$ charmonium states in the energy region of these resonances are analyzed in the framework of a constituent quark model. Together with the bare $q\bar q$ states, threshold effects due to the opening of nearby meson-meson channels are included in a coupled-channels scheme…
Experiments with gold-gold collisions at RHIC have revealed (i) stronger suppression of charmonium production at forward rapidity than at midrapidity and (ii) the similarity between the suppression degrees at RHIC and SPS energies. To describe these findings we employ the model that includes nuclear shadowing effects, calculated within the Glauber-Gribov theory, rapidity-dependent absorptive mechanism, caused by energy-momentum conservation, and dissociation and recombination of the charmonium due to interaction with co-moving matter. The free parameters of the model are tuned and fixed by com…
We estimate the energy of the lowest Charmonium and Upsilon states with hybrid admixtures using the method of QCD Sum Rules. Our results show that the $Ψ'(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ states both have about a 50% admixture of hybrid and meson components. From this we find explanations of both the famous $ρ-π$ puzzle for Charmonium, and the unusual pattern of $σ$ decays that have been found in $Υ$ decays. Moreover, this picture can be used for predictions of heavy quark production with the octet model for RHIC.
It has been argued that the mystery boson X(3872) is a molecule state consisting of primarily D0-D0*bar + D0bar-D*0. In contrast, apparent puzzles and potential difficulties have been pointed out for the charmonium assignment of X(3872). We examine several aspects of these alternatives by semiquantitative methods since quantitatively accurate results are often hard to reach on them. We find that some of the observed properties of X(3872), in particualr, the binding and the production rates are incompatible with the molecule interpretation. Despite puzzles and obstacles, X(3872) may fit more li…
We perform an exploratory lattice QCD simulation of $D \bar D$ scattering, aimed at determining the masses as well as the decay widths of charmonium resonances above open charm threshold. Neglecting coupling to other channels, the resulting phase shift for $D \bar D$ scattering in p-wave yields the well-known vector resonance $ψ(3770)$. For $m_π= 156$ MeV, the extracted resonance mass and the decay width agree with experiment within large statistical uncertainty. The scalar charmonium resonances present a puzzle, since only the ground state $χ_{c0}(1P)$ is well understood, while there is no co…
We examine the so-called rho-pi puzzle of the psi(2S) decay by incorporating two inputs: One is the relative phase between the one-photon and the gluon decay amplitude, and the other is a possible anomaly in the inclusive nonelectromagnetic decay rate of psi(2S). We propose the possibility that in the psi(2S) decay a hadronic decay process of long distance origin is important in addition to the short-distance decay process. The amplitude of this additional process should nearly cancel the three-gluon amplitude in the exclusive psi(2S)---> 1-0- and turn the sum dominantly real in contrast to th…
The X(3872) with quantum numbers J(PC) = 1(++) is considered as a composite hadronic state comprised of the dominant molecular D(0) D*(0) component and other hadronic pairs - D(+-) D*(-+), Jpsi omega and Jpsi rho. Applying the compositeness condition we constrain the couplings of the X(3872) to its constituents. We calculate two- and three-body hadronic decays of the X(3872) to charmonium states chi(cJ) and pions using a phenomenological Lagrangian approach. Next using the estimated X-Jpsi-omega and and X-Jpsi-rho couplings we calculate the widths of X(3872) to Jpsi + h, where h = pi(+) pi(-),…
e+e- Experiments producing charmonium are reviewed. It is found that the contribution of the continuum amplitude via virtual photon was neglected in almost all the experiments and the channels analyzed. It is shown that the contribution of the continuum part may affect the final results significantly in psi(2S) and psi(3770) decays, while the interference between continuum and resonance amplitudes may even affect the J/psi decays as well as the psi(2S) and psi(3770). This should be considered in analyzing the "rho-pi puzzle" between J/psi and psi(2s) decays, and the difference between inclusiv…
We study the scattering lengths of charmonia (J/psi and eta_c) with light hadrons (pi, rho and N) by the quenched lattice QCD simulations on 24x24x24x48, 32x32x32x48 and 48x48x48x48 lattices with the lattice spacing a = 0.068 fm. The scattering length is extracted by using the Luscher's phase-shift formula together with the measurement of the energy shift Delta E of two hadrons on the lattice. We find that there exist attractive interactions in all channels, J/psi(eta_c)-pi, J/psi(eta_c)-rho and J/psi(eta_c)-N: The s-wave J/psi-pi (eta_c-pi) scattering length is determined as 0.0119+-0.0039 fm…
From the $0^{++}$ glueball candidate we argue that the $1^{--}$ glueball $O$ to be near in mass to $J/ψ$. This is supported by the recent null search for $ψ^\prime \to ρπ, K^*\bar K$, while absence of distortion in the energy scan of $J/ψ\to ρπ$ indicates that $Γ_O \gg Γ_{J/ψ}$. $O$ may also play a role in the OZI violating $\bar p p \to ϕγ, ϕπ$ production puzzle.
The narrow charmonium state near 3872 MeV reported by the Belle collaboration and confirmedby CDF lies almost exactly at the neutral D anti-D* threshold. As was predicted many years ago it can be a deuteronlike meson-meson state called a deuson. If so, it should be an axial, or possibily a pseudoscalar state with C=0, and isospin predominantly 0. Large isospin breaking is expected because of the isospin mass splitting between the neutral and charged D (D*) mesons. Because of this large isospin breaking the decay X(3872) to J/psi rho would be allowed, while J/psi sigma would be forbidden by C-p…
We investigate the in-medium modification of pseudoscalar and vector mesons in a QCD motivated chiral quark model by solving the Dyson-Schwinger equations for quarks and mesons at finite temperature for a wide mass range of meson masses, from light (pi, rho) to open-charm (D, D*) states. At the chiral / deconfinement phase transition, the quark-antiquark bound states enter the continuum of unbound states and become broad resonances (the hadronic Mott effect). We calculate the in-medium cross sections for charmonium dissociation due to collisions with light hadrons in a chiral Lagrangian approa…
The hierarchy among the radiative $γ$($π^0$, $η$, $η^{\prime}$) decay channels for the $ψ^{\prime}$ looks quite different from the $J/ψ$ one. The fate of charm, namely an ultimate survival of on-shell $c \bar{c}$ intermediate states, might give us the clue for this new puzzle in exclusive charmonium decays. A similar self-preservation has already been invoked in the past to solve the so-called $ρπ$ puzzle.
We show that there exist uncanceled soft divergences in the k_T factorization for nonfactorizable amplitudes of two-body nonleptonic B meson decays, similar to those identified in hadron hadroproduction. These divergences can be grouped into a soft factor using the eikonal approximation, which is then treated as an additional nonperturbative input in the perturbative QCD formalism. Viewing the special role of the pion as a q-qbar bound state and as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson, we postulate that the soft effect associated with it is significant. This soft factor enhances the nonfactorizable …
It has been observed in B->phiK* and B^{0(+)}->rho^{0(+)}K^{*0} that the fraction of transverse decays, fT, and the fraction of longitudinal decays, fL, are roughly equal, in opposition to the naive expectation, fT/fL << 1. If one requires a single explanation of all polarization puzzles, two possibilities remain within the standard model (SM): penguin annihilation and rescattering. We examine the predictions of these two explanations for fT/fL in b -> d decays. We also study polarization observables in B -> V T decays (V is a vector and T is a tensor meson) to probe whether the two SM explana…
We investigate the theoretical uncertainties of $P$-wave charmonium decays into two pions, $χ_{\c J}\rightarrow π^+π^-$, $π^0π^0$. Constraining the pion distribution-amplitude from the recent precise data on $F_{πγ}(Q^2)$, we find an order-of-magnitude discrepancy between data and prediction. The disagreement persists even after inclusion of transverse degrees of freedom and Sudakov suppressions. We propose the colour-octet mechanism as the solution to the puzzle. The colour-octet decay contribution arising from the higher Fock component $|\c \cbar \g >$ of the $χ_{\c J}$ wave function is actu…
It is shown that the experimental data of psi(3686) and psi(3770) are consistent with a -90 degree phase between the strong and eletromagnetic decay amplitudes. The e+ e- -> rho-pi measured at psi(3770) is also consistent with the branching ratio predicted by Rosner's scenario on rho-pi puzzle in charmonium physics. This scenario leads to a possible large charmless branching ratio in psi(3770) decays.
Adding to the long standing "rho-pi puzzle" in psi(3686) and J/psi decays, recently BES reported the branching ratio of psi(3686) -> Kshort Klong which is enhanced relative to the pQCD " 12% rule" expectation from the branching ratio of J/psi -> Kshort Klong. If the enhancement is due to the mixing of the S- and D-wave charmonium states as in the rho-pi case, the newly measured branching ratio of psi(3686) -> Kshort Klong gives a constraint on the psi(3770) -> Kshort Klong. It serves as a good test for the scenario of the S- and D-wave mixing in the psi(3686) and psi(3770).
The exclusive production of pairs of vector mesons with J^{PC} = 1^{--} in e^+ e^- collisions can proceed through e^+ e^- annihilation into two virtual photons. At energies much greater than the meson masses, the cross section is dominated by the independent fragmentation of the virtual photons into the vector mesons. The fragmentation approximation is used to calculate the cross sections and angular distributions for pairs of vector mesons that can be produced at the B factories. The predicted cross sections for rho^0 + rho^0 and rho^0 + phi production agree with recent measurements by the Ba…
One observes strong suppression effects for hard probes, e.g. the production of J/psi or high-pT particles, in nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at RHIC. Surprisingly, the magnitude of the suppression is quite similar to that at SPS. In order to establish whether these features arise due to the presence of a thermalized system of quarks and gluons formed in the course of the collision, one should investigate the impact of suppression mechanisms which do not explicitly involve such a state. We calculate shadowing for gluons in the Glauber-Gribov theory and propose a model invoking a rapidity-depe…
Nuclear effects for J/Psi production in pA collisions are controlled by the coherence and color transparency effects. Color transparency onsets when the time of formation of the charmonium wave function becomes longer than the inter-nucleon spacing. In this energy regime the effective break-up cross section for a c-cbar dipole depends on energy and nuclear path length, and agrees well with data from fixed target experiments, both in magnitude and energy dependence. At higher energies of RHIC and LHC coherence in c-cbar pair production leads to charm quark shadowing which is a complement to the…
