Experiments with gold-gold collisions at RHIC have revealed (i) stronger suppression of charmonium production at forward rapidity than at midrapidity and (ii) the similarity between the suppression degrees at RHIC and SPS energies. To describe these findings we employ the model that includes nuclear shadowing effects, calculated within the Glauber-Gribov theory, rapidity-dependent absorptive mechanism, caused by energy-momentum conservation, and dissociation and recombination of the charmonium due to interaction with co-moving matter. The free parameters of the model are tuned and fixed by comparison with experimental data at lower energies. A good agreement with the RHIC results concerning the rapidity and centrality distributions is obtained for both heavy Au+Au and light Cu+Cu colliding system. For pA and A+A collisions at LHC the model predicts stronger suppression of the charmonium and bottomonium yields in stark contrast to thermal model predictions.
I compute the first-order corrections to two-particle Bose-Einstein correlations due to deviations from equilibrium. Based on that result I argue that for nearly perfect fluids, the HBT radii ``freeze out'' much later than the single-inclusive distribution. Therefore, to prevent a big longitudinal homogeneity length, the QGP presumably should hadronize not into a nearly perfect fluid of hadrons but rather into a very dissipative one. This could be achieved by a hadronization phase transition away from equilibrium.
We present a relativistic quantum mechanical treatment of opacity and refractive effects that allows reproduction of observables measured in two-pion (HBT) interferometry and pion spectra at RHIC. The inferred emission duration is substantial. The results are consistent with the emission of pions from a system that has a restored chiral symmetry.
The early thermalization and HBT puzzles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions studied at RHIC are shortly reviewed. The results of recent hydrodynamic calculations that shed light on these two intriguing issues are presented. In particular, the role of the elliptic flow as a signature of early thermalization is critically examined.
We present calculations of two-pion and two-kaon correlation functions in relativistic heavy ion collisions from a relativistic transport model that includes explicitly a first-order phase transition from a thermalized quark-gluon plasma to a hadron gas. We compare the obtained correlation radii with recent data from RHIC. The predicted R_side radii agree with data while the R_out and R_long radii are overestimated. We also address the impact of in-medium modifications, for example, a broadening of the rho-meson, on the correlation radii. In particular, the longitudinal correlation radius R_lo…
Suppressions of light and heavy flavor observables are considered to be excellent probes of QCD matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. Suppression predictions of quark and gluon jets appear to suggest a clear hierarchy according to which neutral pions should be more suppressed than D mesons, which in turn should be more suppressed than single electrons. However, joint comparison of neutral pion (light probe) and non-photonic single electron (heavy probe) suppression data at RHIC unexpectedly showed similar jet suppression for these two probes, which presents the well-known …
We present here an extraction of the jet transport coefficient, $\hat{q}$, using RHIC and LHC single-inclusive high-$p_T$ data for different centralities. We fit a $K$-factor that determines the deviation of this coefficient from an ideal estimate, $K \equiv \hat{q}/(2ε^{3/4})$, where $ε$ is given by hydrodynamic simulations. As obtained already in previous studies, this $K$-factor is found to be larger at RHIC than at the LHC. However it is, unexpectedly, basically no-dependent on the centrality of the collision. Taken at face value this result, the $K$-factor would not depend on local proper…
After 10 years of struggling to simultaneously describe the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and flow harmonics $v_n$'s at high $p_T$, now theoretical models are able to reproduce experimental data well. The necessary theoretical developments such as event-by-event fluctuations, choice of initial conditions, and the scalar product method to calculate flow harmonics at high $p_T$ are reviewed. Additionally, a discussion of new proposed experimental observables known as Soft Hard Event Engineering (SHEE) that are sensitive to the path length dependence of the energy loss is included.
We show that the single, non-photonic electron nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}^e$ is affected by the thermal enhancement of the heavy-baryon to heavy-meson ratio in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to proton-proton collisions. We make use of the dynamical quark recombination model to compute such ratio and show that this produces a sizable suppression factor for $R_{AA}^e$ at intermediate transverse momenta. We argue that such suppression factor needs to be considered, in addition to the energy loss contribution, in calculations of $R_{AA}^e$
The central goal of jet quenching studies in high-energy nuclear collisions is the characterization of those QCD medium properties that are accessible by these probes. Most of the discussion in the last years has been focused on the determination of the jet quenching parameter, $\hat q$. We present here an extraction of this parameter using data of inclusive particle suppression at RHIC and LHC energies for different centralities. Our approach consists of fitting a $K$ factor that quantifies the departure of this parameter from an ideal estimate, $K\equiv \hat q/(2ε^{3/4})$, where $\hat q$ is …
We estimate the energy of the lowest Charmonium and Upsilon states with hybrid admixtures using the method of QCD Sum Rules. Our results show that the $Ψ'(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ states both have about a 50% admixture of hybrid and meson components. From this we find explanations of both the famous $ρ-π$ puzzle for Charmonium, and the unusual pattern of $σ$ decays that have been found in $Υ$ decays. Moreover, this picture can be used for predictions of heavy quark production with the octet model for RHIC.
The long-standing puzzle of the quenched $g_A$ in nuclei -- and in dense matter -- is shown to have a simple resolution in a scale-symmetric HLS chiral Lagrangian at the Fermi-liquid fixed point. This resolution exposes scale-chiral symmetry, hidden in QCD in the vacuum, emerging in nuclear matter from low density to high compact-star density. It has important implications on "first principles" approaches to nuclear physics, such as the role of multi-body exchange currents in Gamow-Teller matrix elements in nuclei and in neutrinoless double $β$ decays for going Beyond the Standard Model.
In our analysis, we combine event-by-event hydrodynamics, within the EKRT formulation, with jet quenching -ASW Quenching Weights- to obtain high-$p_T$ $R_{\rm AA}$ for charged particles at RHIC and LHC energies for different centralities. By defining a $K$-factor that quantifies the departure of $\hat{q}$ from an ideal estimate, $K = \hat{q}/(2ε^{3/4})$, we fit the single-inclusive experimental data for charged particles. This $K$-factor is larger at RHIC than at the LHC but, surprisingly, it is almost independent of the centrality of the collision.
The large $N_c$ nuclear potential puzzle arose because three- and higher-meson exchange contributions to the nucleon-nucleon potential did not automatically yield cancellations that make these contributions consistent with the general large $N_c$ scaling rules for the potential. Here it is proposed that the resolution to this puzzle is that the scaling rules only apply for energy-independent potentials while all of the cases with apparent inconsistencies were for energy-dependent potentials. It is shown explicitly how energy-dependent potentials can have radically different large N behavior th…
We have studied, for the first time, the influence of the collective quantum effects in the nuclear wave functions on the azimuthal anisotropy coefficients $ε_{2,3}$ in the central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energies. With the help of the energy weighted sum rule we demonstrate that the classical treatment with the Woods-Saxon nuclear density overestimates the mean square quadrupole moment of the $^{208}$Pb nucleus by a factor of $\sim 2.2$. The Monte-Carlo Glauber simulation of the central Pb+Pb collisions accounting for the restriction on the quadrupole moment leads to $ε_2/ε_3\approx 0.8$ …
Hadron spectra from the first year RHIC run are shown to be excellently reproduced by hydrodynamic calculations. We argue that in particular the elliptic flow data provide strong evidence for early thermalization at RHIC, at energy densities well above deconfinement, but that the phenomenologically extracted short thermalization time scale of less than 1 fm/c provides a serious challenge for theory. The HBT radii from the hydrodynamic calculations agree only qualitatively with the data, showing significant quantitative discrepancies. It is argued that this points to a still incomplete understa…
The analysis of the preliminary RHIC data on $π^{+}-Ξ^{-}$ correlation function is carried out.The $Ξ^*(1530)$ resonance is successfully described. The values of the fireball radius and of the $π^{+}-Ξ^{-}$ scattering lengths are obtained.
We review the current state of photon and dilepton measurements at RHIC, emphasizing that of the theoretical work seeking to interpret them. We highlight the progress made recently in the modelling of relativistic nuclear collisions, and explore the effect on electromagnetic observables. Some outstanding puzzles are presented.
Recent $_Λ^3$H lifetime measurements in relativistic heavy ion collision experiments have yielded values shorter by (30$\pm$8)% than the free $Λ$ lifetime $τ_Λ$, thereby questioning the naive expectation that $τ({_Λ^3}{\rm H})\approxτ_Λ$ for a weakly bound $Λ$ hyperon. Here we apply the closure approximation introduced by Dalitz and coworkers to evaluate the $_Λ^3$H lifetime, using $_Λ^3$H wavefunctions generated by solving three-body Faddeev equations. Our result, disregarding pion final-state interaction (FSI), is $τ({_Λ^3}{\rm H})$=(0.90$\pm$0.01)$τ_Λ$. In contrast to previous works, pion F…
One of the primary aims of the ongoing nuclear collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies is to create a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). The heavy quarks constitutes a unique probe of the QGP properties. Both at RHIC and LHC energies a puzzling relation between the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_T)$ and the elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ related to heavy quark has been observed which challenged all the existing models.\\ We discuss how the temperature dependence of the heavy quark drag coefficient can address for a large part of such a puzzle. We h…
Nuclear effects for J/Psi production in pA collisions are controlled by the coherence and color transparency effects. Color transparency onsets when the time of formation of the charmonium wave function becomes longer than the inter-nucleon spacing. In this energy regime the effective break-up cross section for a c-cbar dipole depends on energy and nuclear path length, and agrees well with data from fixed target experiments, both in magnitude and energy dependence. At higher energies of RHIC and LHC coherence in c-cbar pair production leads to charm quark shadowing which is a complement to the…
One observes strong suppression effects for hard probes, e.g. the production of J/psi or high-pT particles, in nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at RHIC. Surprisingly, the magnitude of the suppression is quite similar to that at SPS. In order to establish whether these features arise due to the presence of a thermalized system of quarks and gluons formed in the course of the collision, one should investigate the impact of suppression mechanisms which do not explicitly involve such a state. We calculate shadowing for gluons in the Glauber-Gribov theory and propose a model invoking a rapidity-depe…
We present a review on the explanation of the RHIC HBT puzzle by a granular pion-emitting source of quark-gluon plasma droplets. The evolution of the droplet is described by relativistic hydrodynamics with an equation of state suggested by lattice gauge results. The granular source evolution is obtained by superposing all of the evolutions of individual droplets. Pions are assumed to be emitted thermally from the droplets at the freeze-out configuration characterized by a freeze-out temperature $T_f$. We find that the average particle emission time scales with the initial radius of the droplet…
For the long standing low mass puzzle of $Λ_c(2940)^+$, we propose an unquenched picture. Our calculation explicitly shows that the mass of the $Λ_c(2P,3/2^-)$ state can be lowered down to be consistent with the experimental data of $Λ_c(2940)^+$ by introducing the $D^*N$ channel contribution. Additionally, we give a semi-quantitative analysis to illustrate why the $Λ_c(2940)^+$ state has a narrow width. It means that the low mass puzzle of $Λ_c(2940)^+$ can be solved. What is more important is that we predict a mass inversion relation for the $2P$ $Λ_{c}^+$ states, i.e., the $Λ_c(2P,1/2^-)$ s…
We argue that the observed antiproton production in heavy-ion collisions at CERN-SpS energies can be understood if (contrary to most sequential scattering approaches) the backward direction in the process $p\bar p \leftrightarrow \bar{n}π$ (with $\bar{n}$=5-6) is consistently accounted for within a thermal framework. Employing the standard picture of subsequent chemical and thermal freezeout, which induces an over-saturation of pion number with associated chemical potentials of $μ_π\simeq$~60-80 MeV, enhances the backward reaction substantially. The resulting rates and corresponding cross sect…
Within the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF), power corrections due to penguin annihilation can account for the observed rates of penguin-dominated two-body decays of $B$ mesons and direct CP asymmetries $A_{CP}(K^-π^+)$, $A_{CP}(K^{*-}π^+)$, $A_{CP}(K^-ρ^0)$ and $A_{CP}(π^+π^-)$. However, the predicted direct CP-violating effects in QCDF for $B^-\to K^-π^0,K^-η,π^-η$ and $\bar B^0\toπ^0π^0$ are wrong in signs when confronted with experiment. We show that subleading $1/m_b$ power corrections to the color-suppressed tree amplitude due to spectator scattering or final-state interactions will…
We investigate the form factors for pseudoscalar-meson-photon transitions by means of dispersive QCD sum rules and demonstrate that most of the measurements done so far (in particular, those by BaBar for $η,$ $η',$ and $η_c$ and those by Belle for $π^0$) are, on the one hand, compatible with each other and with the saturation required by factorization theorems obtained from perturbative QCD and, on the other hand, give a hint that saturation is effective already at relatively low momentum transfers $Q^2;$ this hypothesis is supported by experimental data for the charged-pion elastic form facto…
We determine the dominant missing Standard Model (SM) contribution to the top quark pair forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. Contrary to past expectations, we find a large, around 27%, shift relative to the well-known value of the inclusive asymmetry in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD. Combining all known Standard Model corrections, we find that AFB^{SM} = 0.095 +- 0.007. This value is in agreement with the latest D0 measurement [V. M. Abazov et al. (D0 Collaboration), Phys. Rev. D 90, 072011 (2014)] AFB^{D0} = 0.106+- 0.03 and about 1.5 sigma below that of CDF [T. Aaltonen et al. (CDF…
It is notorious that, contrary to all other precision electroweak data, the forward-backward asymmetry for b quarks $A_{FB}^b$ measured in Z decays at LEP1 is nearly three standard deviations away from the predicted value in the Standard Model; significant deviations also occur in measurements of the asymmetry off the Z pole. We show that these discrepancies can be resolved in a variant of the Randall-Sundrum extra-dimensional model in which the gauge structure is extended to $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_X$ to allow for relatively light Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons. In t…
We extend the perturbative QCD formalism including the Glauber gluons, which has been shown to accommodate the measured $B \to ππ$ and $B^0\toρ^0 ρ^0$ branching ratios simultaneously, to the analysis of the $B \to K π$ and $K \bar K$ decays. It is observed that the convolution of the universal Glauber phase factors with the transverse-momentum-dependent kaon wave function reveals weaker (stronger) Glauber effects than in the pion ($ρ$ meson) case as expected. Our predictions for the branching ratios and the direct CP asymmetries of the $B \to K π$ and $K \bar K$ modes at next-to-leading-order …
We perform a systematic study of various versions of massive gravity with and without violation of Lorentz symmetry in arbitrary dimension. These theories are well known to possess very unusual properties, unfamiliar from studies of gauge and Lorentz invariant models. These peculiarities are caused by mixing of familiar transverse fields with revived longitudinal and pure gauge (Stueckelberg) fields and are all seen already in quadratic approximation. They are all associated with non-trivial dispersion laws, which easily allow superluminal propagation, ghosts, tachyons and essential irrational…
We study the ratio of $R=2 Γ(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- e^+ ν_e )/3Γ(Λ_c^+ \to Λe^+ ν_e )$, which is found to be $R= 1 (0.8)$ from the exact (broken) $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry, in sharp contrast to the average value of $R_{av}=0.59\pm 0.10 $ from the ALICE collaboration and lattice QCD results. We propose to use the mixing of $Ξ_c-Ξ_c'$ to resolve the puzzle. With the model-independent mass relations, we find that the mixing angle is $|θ_c| = 0.137(5)π$, which suppresses $Ξ_c\to Ξe^+ ν_e$ about $20\%$ model-independently, resulting in $R\approx 0.6$ with the $SU(3)$ flavor breaking effect. We explicitly demo…
The nuclear modification of jet splitting in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC energies is studied based on the higher twist formalism. Assuming coherent energy loss for the two splitted subjets, a non-monotonic jet energy dependence is found for the nuclear modification of jet splitting function: strongest modification at intermediate jet energies whereas weaker modification for larger or smaller jet energies. Combined with the smaller size and lower density of the QGP medium at RHIC than at the LHC, this explains the CMS-STAR groomed jet puzzle -- strong nuclear modificat…
The theoretical developments in the study of electromagnetic radiation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are reviewed. The recent progress in the rates for photon and lepton pair production is discussed. Together with the improvements in the hydrodynamic descriptions of the bulk medium, the combined effort is discussed to resolve the "direct photon flow puzzle" in the RHIC and the LHC experiments. Further prediction of the direct photon production in high multiplicity proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC energy can serve as a signature of the quark gluon plasma formation in these small syst…
Thermal fits have consistently reproduced the experimental particles yields of heavy ion collisions, however, the proton to pion ratio from ALICE Pb+Pb $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV is over-predicted by thermal models- known at the $p/π$ puzzle. Here we test the relevance of the extended mass spectrum, i.e., include Hagedorn states (resonances that follow an exponential mass spectrum and have very short life times) on the $p/π$ puzzle. We find that the extended mass spectrum is able to reproduce particle ratios at both RHIC and the LHC as well as being able to match the lower $p/π$ ratio at the LHC…
Heavy-flavored hadrons are unique probes to study the properties of hot and dense QCD medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Transverse spherocity is one of the event-topology variables used to separate jetty and isotropic events from the pool of event samples. This study aims to understand the production dynamics of heavy-flavors through the transverse momentum spectra, double differential yield and mean transverse momentum of J/$ψ$, $\rm D^{0}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}$ as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and transverse spherocity. Further to investi…
The entropic approach to dissociation of bound states immersed in strongly coupled systems is developed. In such systems, the excitations of the bound state are often delocalized and characterized by a large entropy, so that the bound state is strongly entangled with the rest of the statistical system. If this entropy $S$ increases with the separation $r$ between the constituents of the bound state, $S = S(r)$, then the resulting entropic force $F = T\ {\partial S}/{\partial r}$ ($T$ is temperature) can drive the dissociation process. As a specific example, we consider the case of heavy quarko…
The past decade has seen huge advances in experimental measurements made in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and more recently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These new data, in combination with theoretical advances from calculations made in a variety of frameworks, have led to a broad and deep knowledge of the properties of thermal QCD matter. Increasingly quantitative descriptions of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in these collisions have established that the QGP is a strongly coupled liquid with the lowest value of specific viscosity ever measured…
We study cluster and hypernuclei production in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies employing the Parton-Hadron-Quantum-Molecular-Dynamics (PHQMD) approach, a microscopic n-body transport model based on the QMD propagation of the baryonic degrees of freedom with density dependent 2-body potential interactions. All other ingredients of PHQMD, including the collision integral and the treatment of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase, are adopted from the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) approach. In PHQMD the cluster formation occurs dynamically, caused by the interactions. The cluste…
