The analysis of the preliminary RHIC data on $π^{+}-Ξ^{-}$ correlation function is carried out.The $Ξ^*(1530)$ resonance is successfully described. The values of the fireball radius and of the $π^{+}-Ξ^{-}$ scattering lengths are obtained.
We are submitting a comment on the paper "Quantum Opacity, the RHIC HBT Puzzle, and the Chiral Phase Transition" by J.G. Cramer, G.A. Miller, J.M.S. Wu and J. Yoon, published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 102302 (2005).
I compute the first-order corrections to two-particle Bose-Einstein correlations due to deviations from equilibrium. Based on that result I argue that for nearly perfect fluids, the HBT radii ``freeze out'' much later than the single-inclusive distribution. Therefore, to prevent a big longitudinal homogeneity length, the QGP presumably should hadronize not into a nearly perfect fluid of hadrons but rather into a very dissipative one. This could be achieved by a hadronization phase transition away from equilibrium.
We present a relativistic quantum mechanical treatment of opacity and refractive effects that allows reproduction of observables measured in two-pion (HBT) interferometry and pion spectra at RHIC. The inferred emission duration is substantial. The results are consistent with the emission of pions from a system that has a restored chiral symmetry.
The early thermalization and HBT puzzles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions studied at RHIC are shortly reviewed. The results of recent hydrodynamic calculations that shed light on these two intriguing issues are presented. In particular, the role of the elliptic flow as a signature of early thermalization is critically examined.
We present calculations of two-pion and two-kaon correlation functions in relativistic heavy ion collisions from a relativistic transport model that includes explicitly a first-order phase transition from a thermalized quark-gluon plasma to a hadron gas. We compare the obtained correlation radii with recent data from RHIC. The predicted R_side radii agree with data while the R_out and R_long radii are overestimated. We also address the impact of in-medium modifications, for example, a broadening of the rho-meson, on the correlation radii. In particular, the longitudinal correlation radius R_lo…
Suppressions of light and heavy flavor observables are considered to be excellent probes of QCD matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. Suppression predictions of quark and gluon jets appear to suggest a clear hierarchy according to which neutral pions should be more suppressed than D mesons, which in turn should be more suppressed than single electrons. However, joint comparison of neutral pion (light probe) and non-photonic single electron (heavy probe) suppression data at RHIC unexpectedly showed similar jet suppression for these two probes, which presents the well-known …
We present here an extraction of the jet transport coefficient, $\hat{q}$, using RHIC and LHC single-inclusive high-$p_T$ data for different centralities. We fit a $K$-factor that determines the deviation of this coefficient from an ideal estimate, $K \equiv \hat{q}/(2ε^{3/4})$, where $ε$ is given by hydrodynamic simulations. As obtained already in previous studies, this $K$-factor is found to be larger at RHIC than at the LHC. However it is, unexpectedly, basically no-dependent on the centrality of the collision. Taken at face value this result, the $K$-factor would not depend on local proper…
We show that the single, non-photonic electron nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}^e$ is affected by the thermal enhancement of the heavy-baryon to heavy-meson ratio in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to proton-proton collisions. We make use of the dynamical quark recombination model to compute such ratio and show that this produces a sizable suppression factor for $R_{AA}^e$ at intermediate transverse momenta. We argue that such suppression factor needs to be considered, in addition to the energy loss contribution, in calculations of $R_{AA}^e$
The central goal of jet quenching studies in high-energy nuclear collisions is the characterization of those QCD medium properties that are accessible by these probes. Most of the discussion in the last years has been focused on the determination of the jet quenching parameter, $\hat q$. We present here an extraction of this parameter using data of inclusive particle suppression at RHIC and LHC energies for different centralities. Our approach consists of fitting a $K$ factor that quantifies the departure of this parameter from an ideal estimate, $K\equiv \hat q/(2ε^{3/4})$, where $\hat q$ is …
We give a theoretical overview of the heavy quark tomography puzzle posed by recent non-photonic single electron data from central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ AGeV. We show that radiative energy loss mechanisms alone are not able to explain large single electron suppression data, as long as realistic parameter values are assumed. We argue that combined collisional and radiative pQCD approach can solve a substantial part of the non-photonic single electron puzzle.
Experiments with gold-gold collisions at RHIC have revealed (i) stronger suppression of charmonium production at forward rapidity than at midrapidity and (ii) the similarity between the suppression degrees at RHIC and SPS energies. To describe these findings we employ the model that includes nuclear shadowing effects, calculated within the Glauber-Gribov theory, rapidity-dependent absorptive mechanism, caused by energy-momentum conservation, and dissociation and recombination of the charmonium due to interaction with co-moving matter. The free parameters of the model are tuned and fixed by com…
In our analysis, we combine event-by-event hydrodynamics, within the EKRT formulation, with jet quenching -ASW Quenching Weights- to obtain high-$p_T$ $R_{\rm AA}$ for charged particles at RHIC and LHC energies for different centralities. By defining a $K$-factor that quantifies the departure of $\hat{q}$ from an ideal estimate, $K = \hat{q}/(2ε^{3/4})$, we fit the single-inclusive experimental data for charged particles. This $K$-factor is larger at RHIC than at the LHC but, surprisingly, it is almost independent of the centrality of the collision.
At the onset of the RHIC era femtoscopic source sizes inferred from two-particle correlations at RHIC defied description with hydrodynamic models. This failure, which became known as the HBT puzzle, now appears to be solved. The source of the discrepancy appears to be a conspiracy of several factors, each of which contributed to making the evolution of RHIC collisions more explosive. These included pre-equilibrium flow, using a stiffer equation of state and adding viscosity.
We address the problem if the early thermalization and HBT puzzles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions may be solved by the assumption that the early dynamics of the produced matter is locally anisotropic. The hybrid model describing the purely transverse hydrodynamic evolution followed by the perfect-fluid hydrodynamic stage is constructed. The transition from the transverse to perfect-fluid hydrodynamics is described by the Landau matching conditions applied at a fixed proper time. The global fit to the RHIC data reproduces the soft hadronic observables (the pion, kaon, and the proton spect…
We review the current state of photon and dilepton measurements at RHIC, emphasizing that of the theoretical work seeking to interpret them. We highlight the progress made recently in the modelling of relativistic nuclear collisions, and explore the effect on electromagnetic observables. Some outstanding puzzles are presented.
It is argued that the consistent description of the transverse-momentum spectra, elliptic flow, and the HBT radii in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions studied at RHIC may be obtained within the hydrodynamic model if one uses the Gaussian profile for the initial energy density in the transverse plane. Moreover, we show that the results obtained in the scenario with an early start of hydrodynamics (at the proper time tau0 = 0.25 fm) are practically equivalent to the results obtained in the model where the hydrodynamics is preceded by the free-streaming stage of partons (in the proper time in…
Several puzzles about the data at high $p_T$ in heavy-ion collisions are listed. The resolution of them all is given in the framework of parton recombination. More specifically, it is the recombination of the soft and semi-hard shower partons that enhances the region $3<p_T<9$ GeV/c, and gives rise to the large $p/π$ ratio in AuAu collisions. The Cronin effect can be explained in terms of final-state interaction for both $π$ and $p$. The structure of jets produced in AuAu is different from that in $pp$ collisions. The suppression of $R_{CP}$ in forward production can also be understood by exte…
One of the primary aims of the ongoing nuclear collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies is to create a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). The heavy quarks constitutes a unique probe of the QGP properties. Both at RHIC and LHC energies a puzzling relation between the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_T)$ and the elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ related to heavy quark has been observed which challenged all the existing models.\\ We discuss how the temperature dependence of the heavy quark drag coefficient can address for a large part of such a puzzle. We h…
Nuclear effects for J/Psi production in pA collisions are controlled by the coherence and color transparency effects. Color transparency onsets when the time of formation of the charmonium wave function becomes longer than the inter-nucleon spacing. In this energy regime the effective break-up cross section for a c-cbar dipole depends on energy and nuclear path length, and agrees well with data from fixed target experiments, both in magnitude and energy dependence. At higher energies of RHIC and LHC coherence in c-cbar pair production leads to charm quark shadowing which is a complement to the…
Some of the puzzles on hadron production at intermediate $p_T$ found at RHIC are explained as natural consequences of parton recombination. In that framework for hadronization the correlation among hadrons produced in jets can be calculated. Some new results on both near-side and away-side jet structures are presented.
Jet energy loss, photon production and photon-hadron correlations are studied together at high transverse momentum in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies. The modification of hard jets traversing a hot and dense nuclear medium is evaluated by consistently taking into account induced gluon radiation and elastic collisions. The production of high transverse momentum photons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC is calculated by incorporating a complete set of photon-production channels. Comparison with experimental photon production and photon-hadron correlation data is performed, using a (…
We calculate azimuthal correlations in dAu collisions at different rapidities and centralities and argue that experimentally observed depletion of the back-to-back pick can be quantitatively explained by gluon saturation in the Color Glass Condensate of the Gold nucleus.
Correlations of different azimuthal flow harmonics $v_n$ and symmetry planes $Ψ_n$ can add constraints to theoretical models, and probe aspects of the system that are independent of the traditional single-harmonic measurements. Using NeXSPheRIO, a hydrodynamical model which has accurately reproduced a large set of single-harmonic correlations at RHIC, we make predictions of these new observables for 200 A GeV Au+Au Collisions, providing an important baseline for comparison to correlations of flow harmonics, which contain non-trivial information about the initial state. We also point out how to…
Two-particle correlations from RHIC have provided a surprising snapshot of the final state at RHIC. In this talk I discuss the nature of the HBT puzzle and attempt to delineate several factors which might ultimately resolve the issue.
We present the first attempt to extract the "$x$" dependence of the parton distribution function (PDF) of the quark gluon plasma (QGP). In the absence of knowledge regarding the mass of a QGP constituent, we define the new variable $x_N$, the nucleonic momentum fraction, which represents the ratio of the momentum of the parton to that of a self-contained section of the plasma that has the mass of a nucleon. Calculations are compared to data for single hadron suppression in terms of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the azimuthal anisotropy parameter $v_{2}$, as a function of transve…
We investigate the consequences of long range rapidity correlations in the Glasma. Particles produced locally in the transverse plane are correlated by approximately boost invariant flux tubes of longitudinal color electric and magnetic fields that are formed when two sheets of Colored Glass Condensate pass through one another, each acquiring a modified color charge density in the collision. We argue that such long range rapidity correlations persist during the evolution of the Quark Gluon Plasma formed later in the collision. When combined with transverse flow, these correlations reproduce ma…
We present a good description of recent experimental data on forward di-hadron azimuthal correlations measured in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC, where monojet production has been observed. Our approach is based on the Color Glass Condensate effective theory for the small-x degrees of freedom of the nuclear wave function, including the use of non-linear evolution equations with running QCD coupling. Our analysis provides further evidence for the presence of saturation effects in RHIC data.
Femtoscopic measurements at RHIC have been hailed as a source of insight into the bulk properties of QCD matter. However, hydrodynamic models, which have been successful in reproducing other observables have failed to satisfactorily explain femtoscopic two-particle correlation measurements. This failure has been labeled the "HBT puzzle". In this talk, I present correlations using a hybrid model composed of a viscous hydrodynamic module and a hadronic cascade. After incorporating early acceleration, viscosity and a stiffer equation of state, the extracted source sizes come much closer to experi…
We perform a complete theoretical analysis of the azimuthal angular correlation of two-hadron productions in the forward $dAu$ collisions at RHIC in the saturation formalism, and obtain a very good agreement with the experimental data. It is demonstrated that the suppression and broadening of the away side peak provide a unique signal for the onset of the saturation mechanism at small-$x$ in a large nucleus. We emphasize that future experiments of di-hadron correlations in $pA$ collisions at both RHIC and LHC, and in $eA$ collisions at the planned electron-ion collider, shall provide us with a…
Focusing on four types of correlation plots, $R_{\rm AA}$ vs. $v_2$, $R_{\rm AA}$ vs. $I_{\rm AA}$, $I_{\rm AA}$ vs. $v_2^{I_{\rm AA}}$ and $v_2$ vs.\ $v_2^{I_{\rm AA}}$, we demonstrate how the centrality dependence of \emph{correlations} between multiple jet quenching observables provide valuable insight into the energy loss mechanism in a quark-gluon plasma. In particular we find that a qualitative energy loss model gives a good description of $R_{\rm AA}$ vs.\ $v_2$ only when we take $ΔE\sim l^3$ and a medium geometry generated by a model of the Color Glass Condensate. This same $ΔE\sim l^3…
The spatial and temporal characteristics of particle emitting source produced in particle and/or nuclear collisions can be measured by using two-particle femtoscopic correlations. These correlations arise due to quantum statistics, Coulomb and strong final state interactions. In this paper we report on the calculations of like-sign pion femtoscopic correlations produced in p+p, p+Au, d+Au, Au+Au at top RHIC energy using Ultra Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics Model (UrQMD). Three-dimensional correlation functions are constructed using the Bertsch-Pratt parametrization of the two-particle…
We investigate inclusive prompt photon and semi-inclusive prompt photon-hadron production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism which incorporates non-linear dynamics of gluon saturation at small x via Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling. For inclusive prompt photon production, we rewrite the cross-section in terms of direct and fragmentation contributions and show that the direct photon (and isolated prompt photon) production is more sensitive to gluon saturation effects. We then analyze azimuthal correlations in photon-hadron …
Quark interactions with topological gluon configurations can induce chirality imbalance and local parity violation in quantum chromodynamics. This can lead to electric charge separation along the strong magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions -- the chiral magnetic effect (CME). We report measurements by the STAR collaboration of a CME-sensitive observable in $p$+Au and $d$+Au collisions at 200 GeV, where the CME is not expected, using charge-dependent pair correlations relative to a third particle. We observe strong charge-dependent correlations similar to those measured in heavy-…
We analyze long range rapidity correlations observed in the STAR experiment at RHIC. Our goal is to extract properties of the two particle correlation matrix, accounting for the analysis method of the STAR experiment. We find a surprisingly large correlation strength for central collisions of gold nuclei at highest RHIC energies. We argue that such correlations cannot be the result of impact parameter fluctuations.
We analyze the forward-backward multiplicity correlation coefficient as measured by STAR. We show that in the most central Au+Au collisions bins located symmetrically around η= 0 with large separation in pseudorapidity are more strongly correlated than bins located asymmetrically with smaller separation. In proton-proton collisions the opposite effect is observed. It suggests a qualitatively different behavior of the two-particle correlation as a function of pseudorapidity sum in p+p and Au+Au collisions.
In this talk we present the results of two-pion HBT correlation at freeze-out in heavy ion collisions (HICs) from AGS to RHIC energies. The UrQMD hadron-string transport model as well as the CRAB analyzing program are adopted. Based on the cascade mode, in general, the calculations are satisfying and well in line with the experimental data although discrepancies are not negligible. Such as: I), the HBT time-related puzzle exists at all energies. II), at low AGS energies, the calculated volume as well as the mean free path of pion source at freeze-out are lower than data. It implies that a bett…
We study three-hadron azimuthal angular correlations in high energy proton-proton and central nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC at mid-rapidity. We use the LO parton matrix elements for 2 \rightarrow 3 processes and include the effect of parton energy loss in the Quark-Gluon Plasma using the modified fragmentation function approach. For the case when the produced hadrons have either same or not too different momenta, we observe two away side peaks at 2pi/3 and 4pi/3. We consider the dependence of the angular correlations on energy loss parameters that have been used in studies of sing…
We review the recent developments on microscopic transport calculations for two-particle correlations at low relative momenta in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC.
Recent measurements at RHIC of angular correlations of same-sign vs. opposite sign pairs have been interpreted as evidence for large-scale fluctuations of parity-odd fields. In this paper, we provide alternative explanations of the same phenomena based on correlations from charge and momentum conservation overlaid with elliptic flow. These effects are shown to produce correlations with similar magnitudes as those measured. Other correlations are also considered, but estimates of their size suggest they are inconsequential.
We investigate the angular correlation between pions and photons produced in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC and proton-lead collisions at LHC using the Color Glass Condensate formalism and make predictions for the dependence of the production cross section on the angle between the pion and photon at different rapidities and transverse momenta. Measuring this dependence would shed further light on the role of high gluon density and saturation dynamics at RHIC and LHC.
Two-dimensional angular correlation data from the STAR experiment at RHIC and from the LHC experiments provide critical information about dynamical processes in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The principal correlation structures of interest are a broad jet-related peak at small relative azimuth ($ϕ$) extending to large relative pseudorapidity ($η$), the dijet ridge at large relative azimuth, and an independent double ridge on $ϕ$ represented by a quadrupole function. The broad peak at small relative azimuth has been attributed, in large part, to initial-state fluctuations and hydrodynamic …
A new dynamical approach that combines covariant parton transport theory with hadronization channels via parton coalescence and fragmentation is applied to Au+Au at RHIC. Basic consequences of the simple coalescence formulas, such as elliptic flow scaling and enhanced proton/pion ratio, turn out to be rather sensitive to the spacetime aspects of coalescence dynamics.
The Quark Gluon String Model (QGSM) reproduces well the global characteristics of the $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC, e.g., the pseudorapidity and transverse momenta distributions at different centralities. The main goal of this work is to employ the Monte Carlo QGSM for description of femtoscopic characteristics in $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC. The study is concentrated on the low multiplicity and multiplicity averaged events, where no collective effects are expected. The different procedures for fitting the one-dimensional correlation functions of pions are studied and compared with the …
The observation of fluctuations of parity-odd angular observables at RHIC has been interpreted as a signal of a local parity violation. We show how the observed signal can be explained by local charge conservation at freeze-out combined with elliptic flow. Calculations from a blast wave model, which overlays thermal emission onto a collective flow profile, are shown to account for the experimentally observed signal.
We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle as well as correlations in two-dimensional space of transverse momenta of two jets as well as photon and jet. Some $k_t$-factorization subprocesses are included for the first time in the literature. Different unintegrated gluon/parton distributions are used in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UGDF/UPDF used. The collinear NLO $2 \to 3$ contributions dominate over $k_t$-factorization cross section at small relative azimuthal angles as well as for asymmetric transverse momentum configurations.
Correlations of azimuthal angles observed at RHIC have gained great attention due to the prospect of identifying fluctuations of parity-odd regions in the field sector of QCD. Whereas the observable of interest related to parity fluctuations involves subtracting opposite-sign from same-sign correlations, the STAR collaboration reported the same-sign and opposite-sign correlations separately. It is shown here how momentum conservation combined with collective elliptic flow contributes significantly to this class of correlations, though not to the difference between the opposite- and same-sign o…
We calculate the one-particle hadronic spectra and correlation functions of pions based on a hydrodynamical model. Parameters in the model are so chosen that the one-particle spectra reproduce experimental results of $\sqrt{s}=130A$GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Based on the numerical solution, we discuss the space-time evolution of the fluid. Two-pion correlation functions are also discussed. Our numerical solution suggests the formation of the quark-gluon plasma with large volume and low net baryon density.
I present fits with the so-called blast-wave model to single-particle spectra and HBT correlations from Au+Au collisions at a CMS energy of 130 AGeV. There is only little choice of freeze-out temperature and transverse flow velocity for which the model fits both the identified spectra and the correlation radii just well enough not to be excluded. The observed steep M_t dependence of R_side leads to a temperature which it is problematic to interpret. The applicability of the model for the freeze-out description is thus questioned.
We discuss kinematical correlations between charged leptons from semileptonic decays of open charm/bottom, leptons produced in the Drell-Yan mechanism as well as some other mechanisms not included so far in the literature in proton-proton scattering at BNL RHIC. The distributions of charm and bottom quarks/antiquarks are calculated in the framework of the $k_t$-factorization approach. For this calculation we use the Kwieciński unintegrated parton distributions. The hadronization of heavy quarks is done by means of Peterson et al. fragmentation function. We use semileptonic decay functions foun…
Correlation studies exhibit a ridge-like feature in rapidity and azimuthal angle, with and without a jet trigger. We ask whether the feature in untriggered correlations can be a consequence of transverse flow and viscous diffusion.
By analyzing the dynamical properties of particle production in relativistic heavy ion collisions, it is possible to characterize the final stage of the equilibration process occurring in the collision fireball. In this work, we use the Hagedorn model coupled with non-extensive statistics to evaluate the transverse momentum spectra of positive pions for various event centrality classes in Au+Au collisions at RHIC with center-of-mass energies of 62.4GeV/A and 200GeV/A. We find that, by assuming an energy distribution that incorporates particle correlations, it is possible to explain the entire …
We present predictions for the formation of (anti)nuclear bound states in Au+Au central collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200A$ GeV. The coalescence afterburner was applied to the freeze-out phase space distributions of nucleons provided by the transport model, RQMD version 2.4. We study the sensitivity of the deuteron spectra to space-momentum correlations. It is found that the deuteron transverse momentum distributions are strongly affected by the nucleon space-momentum correlations.
Squeezed correlations of particle-antiparticle pairs, also called Back-to-Back Correlations, are predicted to appear if the hadron masses are modified in the hot and dense hadronic medium formed in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. Although well-established theoretically, the squeezed-particle correlations have not yet been searched for experimentally in high energy hadronic or heavy ion collisions, clearly requiring optimized forms to experimentally search for this effect. Within a non-relativistic treatment developed earlier we show that one promising way to search for the BBC signal i…
I review the main experimental results on jet physics in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions as studied via inclusive leading hadron spectra and di-hadron correlations at high transverse momentum. In central Au+Au at RHIC (sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV), the observed large suppression of high-$p_T$ hadron spectra as well as the strongly modified azimuthal dijet correlations compared to baseline p+p results in free space, provide crucial information on the thermodynamical and transport properties of QCD matter.
We continue a series of numerical experiments on many-body systems with random two-body interactions, by examining correlations in ratios in excitation energies of yrast $J$ = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 states. Previous studies, limited only to $J$ = 0,2,4 states, had shown strong correlations in boson systems but not fermion systems. By including $J \ge 6$ states and considering different scatter plots, strong and realistic correlations appear in both boson and fermion systems. Such correlations are a challenge to explanations of random interactions.
