This paper formulates and studies a general distributed field reconstruction problem using a dense network of noisy one-bit randomized scalar quantizers in the presence of additive observation noise of unknown distribution. A constructive quantization, coding, and field reconstruction scheme is developed and an upper-bound to the associated mean squared error (MSE) at any point and any snapshot is derived in terms of the local spatio-temporal smoothness properties of the underlying field. It is shown that when the noise, sensor placement pattern, and the sensor schedule satisfy certain weak technical requirements, it is possible to drive the MSE to zero with increasing sensor density at points of field continuity while ensuring that the per-sensor bitrate and sensing-related network overhead rate simultaneously go to zero. The proposed scheme achieves the order-optimal MSE versus sensor density scaling behavior for the class of spatially constant spatio-temporal fields.
We propose a joint source-channel-network coding scheme, based on compressive sensing principles, for wireless networks with AWGN channels (that may include multiple access and broadcast), with sources exhibiting temporal and spatial dependencies. Our goal is to provide a reconstruction of sources within an allowed distortion level at each receiver. We perform joint source-channel coding at each source by randomly projecting source values to a lower dimensional space. We consider sources that satisfy the restricted eigenvalue (RE) condition as well as more general sources for which the randomn…
In this paper, we demonstrate some applications of compressive sensing over networks. We make a connection between compressive sensing and traditional information theoretic techniques in source coding and channel coding. Our results provide an explicit trade-off between the rate and the decoding complexity. The key difference of compressive sensing and traditional information theoretic approaches is at their decoding side. Although optimal decoders to recover the original signal, compressed by source coding have high complexity, the compressive sensing decoder is a linear or convex optimizatio…
Unlike compressive sensing where the measurement outputs are assumed to be real-valued and have infinite precision, in "one-bit compressive sensing", measurements are quantized to one bit, their signs. In this work, we show how to recover the support of sparse high-dimensional vectors in the one-bit compressive sensing framework with an asymptotically near-optimal number of measurements. We also improve the bounds on the number of measurements for approximately recovering vectors from one-bit compressive sensing measurements. Our results are universal, namely the same measurement scheme works …
The performance of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with bit shaping (i.e., non-equiprobable bit probabilities in the underlying binary code) is studied. For the Gaussian channel, the rates achievable with BICM and bit shaping are practically identical to those of coded modulation or multilevel coding. This identity holds for the whole range of values of signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, the random coding error exponent of BICM significantly exceeds that of multilevel coding and is very close to that of coded modulation.
A memoryless state-dependent multiple-access channel (MAC) is considered, where two transmitters wish to convey their messages to a single receiver while simultaneously sensing (estimating) the respective states via generalized feedbacks. For this channel, an improved inner bound is provided on the fundamental rate-distortions tradeoff which characterizes the communication rates the transmitters can achieve while simultaneously ensuring that their state-estimates satisfy desired distortion criteria. The new inner bound is based on a scheme where each transmitter codes over the generalized feed…
We consider a downlink 1-bit quantized multiuser (MU) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system, where 1-bit digital-to-analog (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are used at the transmitter and the receiver for economical and computational efficiency. We end up with a discrete memoryless channel with input and output vectors belonging to the QPSK constellation. In the context of massive (MIMO) systems the number of base station (BS) antennas is much larger than the number of receive antennas. This leads to high input cardinality of the channel. In this work we introduce a method…
The space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (ST-BICM) is an efficient technique to obtain high diversity and coding gain on a block-fading MIMO channel. Its maximum-likelihood (ML) performance is computed under ideal interleaving conditions, which enables a global optimization taking into account channel coding. Thanks to a diversity upperbound derived from the Singleton bound, an appropriate choice of the time dimension of the space-time coding is possible, which maximizes diversity while minimizing complexity. Based on the analysis, an optimized interleaver and a set of linear precoders,…
This letter investigates bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB) with perfect coding in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to achieve both maximum diversity gain and multiplexing gain. Using perfect coding with BICMB enables us to do this. We show that by using BICMB and perfect coding, the diversity gain becomes independent from the number of transmitted data streams and the number of antennas in each remote antenna unit (RAU) at the transmitter and the receiver. The assumption is that the perfect channel state information (CSI) is known…
Differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM) is recently coupled with uniform scalar quantization (SQ) to improve the rate-distortion (RD) performance for the block-based quantized compressive sensing (CS) of images. In this framework, for each block's CS measurements, a prediction is generated based on the reconstructed CS measurements of the previous blocks and subtracted from measurements of the current block in the measurement domain. The resulting residual is then quantized by uniform SQ to generate the quantization index. However, the entropy coding is still required to remove the statistic…
A distribution matcher (DM) encodes a binary input data sequence into a sequence of symbols (codeword) with desired target probability distribution. The set of the output codewords constitutes a codebook (or code) of a DM. Constant-composition DM (CCDM) uses arithmetic coding to efficiently encode data into codewords from a constant-composition (CC) codebook. The CC constraint limits the size of the codebook, and hence the coding rate of the CCDM. The performance of CCDM degrades with decreasing output length. To improve the performance for short transmission blocks we present a class of multi…
This paper devotes to comparison of different coding schemes (various constructions of Polar and LDPC codes, Product codes and BCH codes) for the case when information is transmitted over AWGN channel with quantization with lowest possible complexity and resolution: 1-bit. We examine performance (in terms of Frame-error-rate -- FER) for schemes mentioned above and give some reasoning for results we obtained. Also we give some recommendations for choosing coding schemes for a given code rate and code length.
In this letter, a binary sparse Bayesian learning (BSBL) algorithm is proposed to slove the one-bit compressed sensing (CS) problem in both single measurement vector (SMV) and multiple measurement vectors (MMVs). By utilising the Bussgang-like decomposition, the one-bit CS problem can be approximated as a standard linear model. Consequently, the standard SBL algorithm can be naturally incorporated. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the BSBL algorithm.
One-bit compressive sensing has extended the scope of sparse recovery by showing that sparse signals can be accurately reconstructed even when their linear measurements are subject to the extreme quantization scenario of binary samples---only the sign of each linear measurement is maintained. Existing results in one-bit compressive sensing rely on the assumption that the signals of interest are sparse in some fixed orthonormal basis. However, in most practical applications, signals are sparse with respect to an overcomplete dictionary, rather than a basis. There has already been a surge of act…
Dirty paper coding (DPC) refers to methods for pre-subtraction of known interference at the transmitter of a multiuser communication system. There are numerous applications for DPC, including coding for broadcast channels. Recently, lattice-based coding techniques have provided several designs for DPC. In lattice-based DPC, there are two codes - a convolutional code that defines a lattice used for shaping and an error correction code used for channel coding. Several specific designs have been reported in the recent literature using convolutional and graph-based codes for capacity-approaching s…
In one-bit compressed sensing, previous results state that sparse signals may be robustly recovered when the measurements are taken using Gaussian random vectors. In contrast to standard compressed sensing, these results are not extendable to natural non-Gaussian distributions without further assumptions, as can be demonstrated by simple counter-examples. We show that approximately sparse signals that are not extremely sparse can be accurately reconstructed from single-bit measurements sampled according to a sub-gaussian distribution, and the reconstruction comes as the solution to a convex pr…
When the Channel State Information (CSI) is known by both the transmitter and the receiver, beamforming techniques employing Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) are commonly used in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Without channel coding, there is a trade-off between full diversity and full multiplexing. When channel coding is added, both of them can be achieved as long as the code rate Rc and the number of employed subchannels S satisfy the condition RcS<=1. By adding a properly designed constellation precoder, both full diversity and full multiplexing can be achieved for both un…
Sign truncated matching pursuit (STrMP) algorithm is presented in this paper. STrMP is a new greedy algorithm for the recovery of sparse signals from the sign measurement, which combines the principle of consistent reconstruction with orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP). The main part of STrMP is as concise as OMP and hence STrMP is simple to implement. In contrast to previous greedy algorithms for one-bit compressed sensing, STrMP only need to solve a convex and unconstraint subproblem at each iteration. Numerical experiments show that STrMP is fast and accurate for one-bit compressed sensing c…
This paper studies the transceiver design of the Gaussian two-pair two-way relay channel (TWRC), where two pairs of users exchange information through a common relay in a pairwise manner. Our main contribution is to show that the capacity of the Gaussian two-pair TWRC is achievable to within 1/2 bit for arbitrary channel conditions. In the proof, we develop a hybrid coding scheme involving Gaussian random coding, nested lattice coding, superposition coding, and network-coded decoding. Further, we present a message-reassembling strategy to decouple the coding design for the user-to-relay and re…
In this paper, we analyze the information theoretic lower bound on the necessary number of samples needed for recovering a sparse signal under different compressed sensing settings. We focus on the weighted graph model, a model-based framework proposed by Hegde et al. (2015), for standard compressed sensing as well as for one-bit compressed sensing. We study both the noisy and noiseless regimes. Our analysis is general in the sense that it applies to any algorithm used to recover the signal. We carefully construct restricted ensembles for different settings and then apply Fano's inequality to …
Abstract-One-bit compressive sensing (CS) is known to be particularly suited for resource-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this paper, we consider 1-bit CS over noisy WSNs subject to channel-induced bit flipping errors, and propose an amplitude-aided signal reconstruction scheme, by which (i) the representation points of local binary quantizers are designed to minimize the loss of data fidelity caused by local sensing noise, quantization, and bit sign flipping, and (ii) the fusion center adopts the conventional minimization method for sparse signal recovery using the decoded and…
A new polar coding scheme for higher order modulation is presented. The proposed scheme is based on multi-level coding (MLC) with natural labeling, where the bit-level corresponding to the sign-bit is generated in dependence on the previous bit-levels, such that the modulated symbols are distributed according to a target non-uniform distribution resulting in a shaping gain. This is realized by replacing the polar encoder in the sign-bit level by a successive cancellation (SC) decoder, such that the overall complexity is not increased compared to a conventional MLC scheme with polar codes. Nume…
In the current work, we have formulated the optimal bit-allocation problem for a scalable codec of images or videos as a constrained vector-valued optimization problem and demonstrated that there can be many optimal solutions, called Pareto optimal points. In practice, the Pareto points are derived via the weighted sum scalarization approach. An important question which arises is whether all the Pareto optimal points can be derived using the scalarization approach? The present paper provides a sufficient condition on the rate-distortion function of each resolution of a scalable codec to addres…
We take an information theoretic perspective on a classical sparse-sampling noisy linear model and present an analytical expression for the mutual information, which plays central role in a variety of communications/processing problems. Such an expression was addressed previously either by bounds, by simulations and by the (non-rigorous) replica method. The expression of the mutual information is based on techniques used in [1], addressing the minimum mean square error (MMSE) analysis. Using these expressions, we study specifically a variety of sparse linear communications models which include…
This paper studies the problem of recovering a signal from one-bit compressed sensing measurements under a manifold model; that is, assuming that the signal lies on or near a manifold of low intrinsic dimension. We provide a convex recovery method based on the Geometric Multi-Resolution Analysis and prove recovery guarantees with a near-optimal scaling in the intrinsic manifold dimension. Our method is the first tractable algorithm with such guarantees for this setting. The results are complemented by numerical experiments confirming the validity of our approach.
This is a tale of two linear programming decoders, namely channel coding linear programming decoding (CC-LPD) and compressed sensing linear programming decoding (CS-LPD). So far, they have evolved quite independently. The aim of the present paper is to show that there is a tight connection between, on the one hand, CS-LPD based on a zero-one measurement matrix over the reals and, on the other hand, CC-LPD of the binary linear code that is obtained by viewing this measurement matrix as a binary parity-check matrix. This connection allows one to translate performance guarantees from one setup to…
Superdense coding proved that entanglement-assisted quantum communications can improve the data transmission rates compared to classical systems. It allows sending 2 classical bits between the parties in exchange of 1 quantum bit and a pre-shared entangled Bell pair. This paper introduces a new protocol which is intended for distributed communication. Using a pre-shared entangled Bell pair and 1 classical bit 2,5 classical bits can be transmitted in average. This means not only valuable increase in capacity but the two-way distributed operation opens new fields of investigation.
This work focuses on the reconstruction of sparse signals from their 1-bit measurements. The context is the one of 1-bit compressive sensing where the measurements amount to quantizing (dithered) random projections. Our main contribution shows that, in addition to the measurement process, we can additionally reconstruct the signal with a binarization of the sensing matrix. This binary representation of both the measurements and sensing matrix can dramatically simplify the hardware architecture on embedded systems, enabling cheaper and more power efficient alternatives. Within this framework, g…
Spectrum sensing is a key problem in cognitive radio. However, traditional detectors become ineffective when noise uncertainty is severe. It is shown that the entropy of Gauss white noise is constant in the frequency domain, and a robust detector based on the entropy of spectrum amplitude was proposed. In this paper a novel detector is proposed based on the entropy of spectrum power density, and its performance is better than the previous scheme with less computational complexity. Furthermore, to improve the reliability of the detection, a two-stage entropy-based cooperative spectrum sensing s…
We consider the problem of sparse signal recovery from 1-bit measurements. Due to the noise present in the acquisition and transmission process, some quantized bits may be flipped to their opposite states. These sign flips may result in severe performance degradation. In this study, a novel algorithm, termed HISTORY, is proposed. It consists of Hamming support detection and coefficients recovery. The HISTORY algorithm has high recovery accuracy and is robust to strong measurement noise. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm.
In this paper, we consider a two-way relay network in which two users exchange messages through a single relay using a physical-layer network coding (PNC) based protocol. The protocol comprises two phases of communication. In the multiple access (MA) phase, two users transmit their modulated signals concurrently to the relay, and in the broadcast (BC) phase, the relay broadcasts a network-coded (denoised) signal to both users. Nonbinary and binary network codes are considered for uniform and nonuniform pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) adopted in the MA phase, respectively. We examine the effec…
One-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), performing signal sampling as an extreme simple comparator, is an overwhelming technology for spectrum sensing due to its low-cost, low-power consumptions and high sampling rate. In this letter, we propose a novel one-bit sensing approach based on the eigenvalue moment ratio (EMR), which has been proved to be highly efficient for conventional multi-antenna spectrum sensing in $\infty$-bit situation. Particularly, we determine the asymptotic distribution of one-bit EMR under null hypothesis via the central limited theorem (CLT), allowing us to perform …
Compressed sensing (CS) and 1-bit CS cannot directly recover quantized signals and require time consuming recovery. In this paper, we introduce \textit{Hamming compressed sensing} (HCS) that directly recovers a k-bit quantized signal of dimensional $n$ from its 1-bit measurements via invoking $n$ times of Kullback-Leibler divergence based nearest neighbor search. Compared with CS and 1-bit CS, HCS allows the signal to be dense, takes considerably less (linear) recovery time and requires substantially less measurements ($\mathcal O(\log n)$). Moreover, HCS recovery can accelerate the subsequent…
A simple hard-thresholding operation is shown to be able to recover $L$ signals $\mathbf{x}_1,...,\mathbf{x}_L \in \mathbb{R}^n$ that share a common support of size $s$ from $m = \mathcal{O}(s)$ one-bit measurements per signal if $L \ge \log(en/s)$. This result improves the single signal recovery bounds with $m = \mathcal{O}(s\log(en/s))$ measurements in the sense that asymptotically fewer measurements per non-zero entry are needed. Numerical evidence supports the theoretical considerations.
Is it possible to obliviously construct a set of hyperplanes H such that you can approximate a unit vector x when you are given the side on which the vector lies with respect to every h in H? In the sparse recovery literature, where x is approximately k-sparse, this problem is called one-bit compressed sensing and has received a fair amount of attention the last decade. In this paper we obtain the first scheme that achieves almost optimal measurements and sublinear decoding time for one-bit compressed sensing in the non-uniform case. For a large range of parameters, we improve the state of the…
We study the problem of jointly sparse support recovery with 1-bit compressive measurements in a sensor network. Sensors are assumed to observe sparse signals having the same but unknown sparse support. Each sensor quantizes its measurement vector element-wise to 1-bit and transmits the quantized observations to a fusion center. We develop a computationally tractable support recovery algorithm which minimizes a cost function defined in terms of the likelihood function and the $l_{1,\infty}$ norm. We observe that even with noisy 1-bit measurements, jointly sparse support can be recovered accura…
This paper studies the stability of some reconstruction algorithms for compressed sensing in terms of the bit precision. Considering the fact that practical digital systems deal with discretized signals, we motivate the importance of the total number of accurate bits needed from the measurement outcomes in addition to the number of measurements. It is shown that if one uses a $2k \times n$ Vandermonde matrix with roots on the unit circle as the measurement matrix, $O(\ell + k \log(n/k))$ bits of precision per measurement are sufficient to reconstruct a $k$-sparse signal $x \in \R^n$ with dynam…
There have been a number of studies on sparse signal recovery from one-bit quantized measurements. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to the choice of the quantization thresholds and its impact on the signal recovery performance. This paper examines the problem of one-bit quantizer design for sparse signal recovery. Our analysis shows that the magnitude ambiguity that ever plagues conventional one-bit compressed sensing methods can be resolved, and an arbitrarily small reconstruction error can be achieved by setting the quantization thresholds close enough to the original data sample…
This paper introduces a new counting code. Its design was motivated by distributed video coding where, for decoding, error correction methods are applied to improve predictions. Those error corrections sometimes fail which results in decoded values worse than the initial prediction. Our code exploits the fact that bit errors are relatively unlikely events: more than a few bit errors in a decoded pixel value are rare. With a carefully designed counting code combined with a prediction those bit errors can be corrected and sometimes the original pixel value recovered. The error correction improve…
This letter proposes a low-computational Bayesian algorithm for noisy sparse recovery in the context of one bit compressed sensing with sensing matrix perturbation. The proposed algorithm which is called BHT-MLE comprises a sparse support detector and an amplitude estimator. The support detector utilizes Bayesian hypothesis test, while the amplitude estimator uses an ML estimator which is obtained by solving a convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that BHT-MLE algorithm offers more reconstruction accuracy than that of an ML estimator (MLE) at a low computational cost.
Completely blind sensing is the problem of recovering bandlimited signals from measurements, without any spectral information beside an upper bound on the measure of the whole support set in the frequency domain. Determining the number of measurements necessary and sufficient for reconstruction has been an open problem, and usually partially blind sensing is performed, assuming to have some partial spectral information available a priori. In this paper, the minimum number of measurements that guarantees perfect recovery in the absence of measurement error, and robust recovery in the presence o…
The recently introduced compressive sensing (CS) framework enables digital signal acquisition systems to take advantage of signal structures beyond bandlimitedness. Indeed, the number of CS measurements required for stable reconstruction is closer to the order of the signal complexity than the Nyquist rate. To date, the CS theory has focused on real-valued measurements, but in practice, measurements are mapped to bits from a finite alphabet. Moreover, in many potential applications the total number of measurement bits is constrained, which suggests a tradeoff between the number of measurements…
This paper proposes a novel model of the two-level scalar quantizer with extended Huffman coding. It is designed for the average bit rate to approach the source entropy as close as possible provided that the signal to quantization noise ratio (SQNR) value does not decrease more than 1 dB from the optimal SQNR value. Assuming the asymmetry of representation levels for the symmetric Laplacian probability density function, the unequal probabilities of representation levels are obtained, i.e. the proper basis for further implementation of lossless compression techniques is provided. In this paper,…
A class of recovering algorithms for 1-bit compressive sensing (CS) named Soft Consistency Reconstructions (SCRs) are proposed. Recognizing that CS recovery is essentially an optimization problem, we endeavor to improve the characteristics of the objective function under noisy environments. With a family of re-designed consistency criteria, SCRs achieve remarkable counter-noise performance gain over the existing counterparts, thus acquiring the desired robustness in many real-world applications. The benefits of soft decisions are exemplified through structural analysis of the objective functio…
We investigate the sign-linear embeddings of 1-bit compressed sensing given by Gaussian measurements. One can give short arguments concerning a Restricted Isometry Property of such maps using Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension of sparse hemispheres. This approach has a natural extension to the presence of additive white noise prior to quantization. Noisy one-bit mappings are shown to satisfy an RIP when the metric on the sphere is given by the noise.
This letter proposes a dictionary learning algorithm for blind one bit compressed sensing. In the blind one bit compressed sensing framework, the original signal to be reconstructed from one bit linear random measurements is sparse in an unknown domain. In this context, the multiplication of measurement matrix $\Ab$ and sparse domain matrix $Φ$, \ie $\Db=\AbΦ$, should be learned. Hence, we use dictionary learning to train this matrix. Towards that end, an appropriate continuous convex cost function is suggested for one bit compressed sensing and a simple steepest-descent method is exploited to…
The bits-back argument suggests that latent variable models can be turned into lossless compression schemes. Translating the bits-back argument into efficient and practical lossless compression schemes for general latent variable models, however, is still an open problem. Bits-Back with Asymmetric Numeral Systems (BB-ANS), recently proposed by Townsend et al. (2019), makes bits-back coding practically feasible for latent variable models with one latent layer, but it is inefficient for hierarchical latent variable models. In this paper we propose Bit-Swap, a new compression scheme that generali…
Recently, the 1-bit compressive sensing (1-bit CS) has been studied in the field of sparse signal recovery. Since the amplitude information of sparse signals in 1-bit CS is not available, it is often the support or the sign of a signal that can be exactly recovered with a decoding method. In this paper, we first show that a necessary assumption (that has been overlooked in the literature) should be made for some existing theories and discussions for 1-bit CS. Without such an assumption, the found solution by some existing decoding algorithms might be inconsistent with 1-bit measurements. This …
Based on the impressive features that network coding and compressed sensing paradigms have separately brought, the idea of bringing them together in practice will result in major improvements and influence in the upcoming 5G networks. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these key techniques in a cluster-based wireless sensor network, in the presence of temporal and spatial correlations. Our goal is to achieve better compression gains by scaling down the total payload carried by applying temporal compression as well as reducing the total number of transmissions in …

We propose a new method, {\it binary fused compressive sensing} (BFCS), to recover sparse piece-wise smooth signals from 1-bit compressive measurements. The proposed algorithm is a modification of the previous {\it binary iterative hard thresholding} (BIHT) algorithm, where, in addition to the sparsity constraint, the total-variation of the recovered signal is upper constrained. As in BIHT, the data term of the objective function is an one-sided $\ell_1$ (or $\ell_2$) norm. Experiments on the recovery of sparse piece-wise smooth signals show that the proposed algorithm is able to take advantag…

In 1-bit compressive sensing, each measurement is quantized to a single bit, namely the sign of a linear function of an unknown vector, and the goal is to accurately recover the vector. While it is most popular to assume a standard Gaussian sensing matrix for 1-bit compressive sensing, using structured sensing matrices such as partial Gaussian circulant matrices is of significant practical importance due to their faster matrix operations. In this paper, we provide recovery guarantees for a correlation-based optimization algorithm for robust 1-bit compressive sensing with randomly signed partia…
