We construct a class of linear space-time block codes for any number of transmit antennas that have controllable ML decoding complexity with a maximum rate of 1 symbol per channel use. The decoding complexity for $M$ transmit antennas can be varied from ML decoding of $2^{\lceil \log_2M \rceil -1}$ symbols together to single symbol ML decoding. For ML decoding of $2^{\lceil \log_2M \rceil - n}$ ($n=1,2,...$) symbols together, a diversity of $\min(M,2^{\lceil \log_2M \rceil-n+1})$ can be achieved. Numerical results show that the performance of the constructed code when $2^{\lceil \log_2M \rceil-1}$ symbols are decoded together is quite close to the performance of ideal rate-1 orthogonal codes (that are non-existent for more than 2 transmit antennas).
This paper investigates the performance of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that uses a large transmit antenna array with antenna elements spaced densely. Under the assumption of idealized uniform linear antenna arrays without mutual coupling, precoded quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission is proved to achieve the channel capacity of the massive MIMO system when the transmit antenna separation tends to zero. This asymptotic optimality is analogous to that of QPSK faster-than-Nyquist signaling.
This paper studies the impact of transmit antenna selection on the secrecy performance of massive MIMO wiretap channels. We consider a scenario in which a multi-antenna transmitter selects a subset of transmit antennas with the strongest channel gains. Confidential messages are then transmitted to a multi-antenna legitimate receiver while the channel is being overheard by a multi-antenna eavesdropper. For this setup, we approximate the distribution of the instantaneous secrecy rate in the large-system limit. The approximation enables us to investigate the optimal number of selected antennas wh…
The problem of finding the optimal number of data streams to transmit in a multi-user MIMO scenario, where both the transmitters and receivers are equipped with multiple antennas is considered. Without channel state information at any transmitter, with a zero-forcing receiver each user is shown to transmit a single data stream to maximize its own outage capacity in the presence of sufficient number of users. Transmitting a single data stream is also shown to be optimal in terms of maximizing the sum of the outage capacities in the presence of sufficient number of users.
Zhang et. al. recently derived upper and lower bounds on the achievable diversity of an N_R x N_T i.i.d. Rayleigh fading multiple antenna system using transmit antenna selection, spatial multiplexing and a linear receiver structure. For the case of L = 2 transmitting (out of N_T available) antennas the bounds are tight and therefore specify the maximal diversity order. For the general case with L <= min(N_R,N_T) transmitting antennas it was conjectured that the maximal diversity is (N_T-L+1)(N_R-L+1) which coincides with the lower bound. Herein, we prove this conjecture for the zero forcing an…
A Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel model is considered. The input is a two-antenna transmitter, while the outputs are the legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, both equipped with multiple antennas. All channels are assumed to be known. The problem of obtaining the optimal input covariance matrix that achieves secrecy capacity subject to a power constraint is addressed, and a closed-form expression for the secrecy capacity is obtained.
We derive optimal SNR-based transmit antenna selection rules at the source and relay for the nonregenerative half duplex MIMO relay channel. While antenna selection is a suboptimal form of beamforming, it has the advantage that the optimization is tractable and can be implemented with only a few bits of feedback from the destination to the source and relay. We compare the bit error rate of optimal antenna selection at both the source and relay to other proposed beamforming techniques and propose methods for performing the necessary limited feedback.
Consider a fading Gaussian MIMO channel with $N_\mathrm{t}$ transmit and $N_\mathrm{r}$ receive antennas. The transmitter selects $L_\mathrm{t}$ antennas corresponding to the strongest channels. For this setup, we study the distribution of the input-output mutual information when $N_\mathrm{t}$ grows large. We show that, for any $N_\mathrm{r}$ and $L_\mathrm{t}$, the distribution of the input-output mutual information is accurately approximated by a Gaussian distribution whose mean grows large and whose variance converges to zero. Our analysis depicts that, in the large limit, the gap between …
Due to the large power consumption in RF-circuitry of massive MIMO systems, practically relevant performance measures such as energy efficiency or bandwidth efficiency are neither necessarily monotonous functions of the total transmit power nor the number of active antennas. Optimal antenna selection is however computationally infeasible in these systems. In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the transmit power and the subset of selected antennas subject to non-monotonous performance measures in massive multiuser MIMO settings. Numerical results are given for energy effi…
In this paper, the performance of an underlay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio system is analytically studied. In particular, the secondary transmitter operates in a spatial multiplexing transmission mode, while a zero-forcing detector is employed at the secondary receiver. Additionally, the secondary system is interfered by single-antenna primary users (PUs). To enhance the performance of secondary transmission, optimal power allocation is performed at the secondary transmitter with a constraint on the maximum allowable outage threshold specified by the PUs. Further, the …
In this paper, we study the impacts of transmit antenna selection on the secrecy performance of massive MIMO systems. We consider a wiretap setting in which a fixed number of transmit antennas are selected and then confidential messages are transmitted over them to a multi-antenna legitimate receiver while being overheard by a multi-antenna eavesdropper. For this setup, we derive an accurate approximation of the instantaneous secrecy rate. Using this approximation, it is shown that in some wiretap settings under antenna selection the growth in the number of active antennas enhances the secrecy…
We compare four open-loop transmit diversity schemes in a coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system with four transmit antennas, namely cyclic delay diversity (CDD), Space-Time Block Code (STBC, Alamouti code is used) with CDD, Quasi-Orthogonal STBC (QO-STBC) and Minimum-Decoding-Complexity QOSTBC (MDC-QOSTBC). We show that in a coded system with low code rate, a scheme with spatial transmit diversity of second order can achieve similar performance to that with spatial transmit diversity of fourth order due to the additional diversity provided by the phase shift diversity …
In this paper, performance of a dual-hop cooperative multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system is analyzed over Rayleigh faded channels. For the considered system model, non-regenerative MIMO scheme with transmit antenna selection strategy (TAS) is employed. In this scheme, a single transmit antenna which maximizes the total received signal power at the receiver is selected for transmission. Useful insights from average symbol error rate for various quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes such as general order hexagonal QAM (HQAM), general order rectangular QAM (RQAM) and 32-cross…
Cognitive radio (CR) technology addresses the problem of spectrum under-utilization. In underlay CR mode, the secondary users are allowed to communicate provided that their transmission is not detrimental to primary user communication. Transmit antenna selection is one of the low-complexity methods to increase the capacity of wireless communication systems. In this article, we propose and analyze the performance benefit of a transmit antenna selection scheme for underlay secondary system that ensures the instantaneous interference caused by the secondary transmitter to the primary receiver is …
This paper considers a deterministic physical model of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with uniform linear antenna arrays. It is known that the maximum spatial degrees of freedom is achieved by spacing antenna elements at half the carrier wavelength. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of spacing antennas more densely than the critical separation. The achievable rates of MIMO systems are evaluated in the large-system limit, where the lengths of transmit and receive antenna arrays tend to infinity with the antenna separations kept constant. The main res…
For an $n_t$ transmit, $n_r$ receive antenna system ($n_t \times n_r$ system), a {\it{full-rate}} space time block code (STBC) transmits $min(n_t,n_r)$ complex symbols per channel use. In this paper, a scheme to obtain a full-rate STBC for 4 transmit antennas and any $n_r$, with reduced ML-decoding complexity is presented. The weight matrices of the proposed STBC are obtained from the unitary matrix representations of Clifford Algebra. By puncturing the symbols of the STBC, full rate designs can be obtained for $n_r < 4$. For any value of $n_r$, the proposed design offers the least ML-decoding…
In this paper, we analyze the ergodic rate of single transmit antenna selection (TAS) in low-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) systems. Using low-resolution ADCs is a potential power-reduction solution for multiple antenna systems. Low-resolution ADC systems with TAS can further reduce cost and power consumption in wireless transceivers. Considering such systems, we derive the approximated lower bound of ergodic rate with TAS. Here, we exploit the approximated distribution of the sum of Weibull random variables to address the challenge involved in analyzing the quantization error. W…
Space-time block codes from square complex orthogonal designs (SCOD) have been extensively studied and most of the existing SCODs contain large number of zeros. The zeros in the designs result in high peak-to-average power ratio and also impose a severe constraint on hardware implementation of the code while turning off some of the transmitting antennas whenever a zero is transmitted. Recently, SCODs with no zero entry have been constructed for $2^a$ transmit antennas whenever $a+1$ is a power of 2. Though there exists codes for 4 and 16 transmit antennas with no zero entry, there is no genera…
In this paper, we address the transmit antenna selection in multi-user MIMO systems with precoding. The optimum and reduced complexity sub-optimum antenna selection algorithms are introduced. QR-decomposition (QRD) based antenna selection is investigated and the reason behind its sub-optimality is analytically derived. We introduce the conventional QRD-based algorithm and propose an efficient QRD-based transmit antenna scheme (maxR) that is both implementation and performance efficient. Moreover, we derive explicit formulae for the computational complexities of the aforementioned algorithms. S…
This paper addresses the establishment of secure communication links between smart-meters (Alice) and an aggregator (Bob) in the presence of an eavesdropper (Eve). The proposed scenario assumes: (i) MIMOME wiretap channel; (ii) transmit antenna selection at the Alice; (iii) no channel state information at the transmitter; (iv) fixed Wyner codes; and (v) guarantee of secure throughput by both quality of service and secrecy outage constraints. We propose a simple protocol to enhance security via transmit antenna selection, and then assess its performance in closed-form by means of secrecy outage…
In this work, we study the impact of imperfect sharing of the Channel State Information (CSI) available at the transmitters on a Network MIMO setting in which a set of $M$ transmit antennas, possibly not co-located, jointly serve two multi-antenna users endowed with $N_1$ and $N_2$ antennas, respectively. We consider the case where only a subset of $k$ transmit antennas have access to perfect CSI, whereas the other $M-k$ transmit antennas have only access to finite precision CSI. The analysis of this configuration aims to answer the question of how much an extra informed antenna can help. We m…
Hybrid analog-digital architectures are considered as promising candidates for implementing millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems since they enable a considerable reduction of the required number of costly radio frequency (RF) chains by moving some of the signal processing operations into the analog domain. However, the analog feed network, comprising RF dividers, combiners, phase shifters, and line connections, of hybrid MIMO architectures is not scalable due to its prohibitively high power consumption for large numbers of transmit antennas. Motivated …
In this paper, we deal with the design of high-rate, full-diversity, low maximum likelihood (ML) decoding complexity space-time block codes (STBCs) with code rates of 2 and 1.5 complex symbols per channel use for multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems employing three and four transmit antennas. We fill the empty slots of the existing STBCs from CIODs in their transmission matrices by additional symbols and use the conditional ML decoding technique which significantly reduces the ML decoding complexity of non-orthogonal STBCs while ensuring full-diversity and high coding gain. First, two…
Multiple input multiple output techniques are considered attractive for future wireless communication systems, due to the continuing demand for high data rates, spectral efficiency, suppress interference ability and robustness of transmission. MIMO-OFDM is very helpful to transmit high data rate in wireless transmission and provides good maximum system capacity by getting the advantages of both MIMO and OFDM. The main problem in this system is that increase in number of transmit and receive antennas lead to hardware complexity. To tackle this issue, an effective optimal transmit antenna subset…
Recently, the remarkable potential of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system was unveiled for its ability to provide spatial diversity or multiplexing gains. For MIMO diversity schemes, it is already known that. by the optimal antenna selection maximizing the post-processing signal-to-noise ratio, the diversity order of the full system can be maintained. On the other hand, the diversity order achieved by antenna selection in spatial multiplexing systems, especially those exploiting practical coding and decoding schemes, has not been rigorously analyzed thus far. …
The transmission capacity of an ad-hoc network is the maximum density of active transmitters per unit area, given an outage constraint at each receiver for a fixed rate of transmission. Assuming that the transmitter locations are distributed as a Poisson point process, this paper derives upper and lower bounds on the transmission capacity of an ad-hoc network when each node is equipped with multiple antennas. The transmitter either uses eigen multi-mode beamforming or a subset of its antennas to transmit multiple data streams, while the receiver uses partial zero forcing to cancel certain inte…
An asymptotic technique is presented for finding the spectral efficiency of multi-antenna links in wireless networks where transmitters have Channel-State-Information (CSI) corresponding to their target receiver. Transmitters are assumed to transmit independent data streams on a limited number of channel modes which limits the rank of transmit covariance matrices. This technique is applied to spatially distributed networks to derive an approximation for the asymptotic spectral efficiency in the interference-limited regime as a function of link-length, interferer density, number of antennas per…
This paper investigates the performance of the downlink channel in distributed antenna systems. We first establish the ergodic capacity of distributed antennas, under different channel side information (CSI) assumptions. We consider a generalized distributed antenna system with $N$ distributed ports, each of which is equipped with an array of $L$ transmit antennas and constrained by a fixed transmit power. For this system we calculate the downlink capacity to a single antenna receiver, under different assumptions about the availability of the channel states at the transmitter. Having establish…
Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is now well-known as a potential candidate for delay-sensitive and spectrally efficient communication applications, especially in two-way relay channels (TWRCs). In this paper, we present the error performance analysis of a multiple-input single-output (MISO) fixed network coding (FNC) system with two different transmit antenna selection (TAS) schemes. For the first scheme, where the antenna selection is performed based on the strongest channel, we derive a tight closed-form upper bound on the average symbol error rate (SER) with $M$-ary modulation and show …
Transmit signal and bandwidth optimization is considered in multiple-antenna relay channels. Assuming all terminals have channel state information, the cut-set capacity upper bound and decode-and-forward rate under full-duplex relaying are evaluated by formulating them as convex optimization problems. For half-duplex relays, bandwidth allocation and transmit signals are optimized jointly. Moreover, achievable rates based on the compress-and-forward transmission strategy are presented using rate-distortion and Wyner-Ziv compression schemes. It is observed that when the relay is close to the sou…
We consider the multi-user MIMO broadcast channel with $M$ single-antenna users and $N$ transmit antennas under the constraint that each antenna emits signals having constant envelope (CE). The motivation for this is that CE signals facilitate the use of power-efficient RF power amplifiers. Analytical and numerical results show that, under certain mild conditions on the channel gains, for a fixed $M$, array gain is achievable even under the stringent per-antenna CE constraint (essentially, for a fixed $M$, at sufficiently large $N$ the total transmitted power can be reduced with increasing $N$…
For an $n_t$ transmit, $n_r$ receive antenna system ($n_t \times n_r$ system), a {\it{full-rate}} space time block code (STBC) transmits $n_{min} = min(n_t,n_r)$ complex symbols per channel use and in general, has an ML-decoding complexity of the order of $M^{n_tn_{min}}$ (considering square designs), where $M$ is the constellation size. In this paper, a scheme to obtain a full-rate STBC for $2^a$ transmit antennas and any $n_r$, with reduced ML-decoding complexity of the order of $M^{n_t(n_{min}-3/4)}$, is presented. The weight matrices of the proposed STBC are obtained from the unitary matri…
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the frequency-selective K-user interference channel in the presence of an instantaneous relay (IR) with multiple receive and transmit antennas. We investigate two scenarios based on the IR antennas' cooperation ability. First, we assume that the IR receive and transmit antennas can coordinate with each other, where the transmitted signal of each transmit antenna can depend on the received signals of all receive antennas, and we derive an achievable DoF for this model. In our interference alignment scheme, we divide receivers into two grou…
For a multiple antenna system, we compute the asymptotic distribution of antenna selection gain when the transmitter selects the transmit antenna with the strongest channel. We use this to asymptotically estimate the underlying channel capacity distributions, and demonstrate that unlike multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the channel for antenna selection systems hardens at a slower rate, and thus a significant multiuser scheduling gain can exist - O(1/ log m) for channel selection as opposed to O(1/ sqrt{m}) for MIMO, where m is the number of transmit antennas. Additionally, even w…
We introduce and investigate the opportunities of multi-antenna communication schemes whose training and feedback stages are interleaved and mutually interacting. Specifically, unlike the traditional schemes where the transmitter first trains all of its antennas at once and then receives a single feedback message, we consider a scenario where the transmitter instead trains its antennas one by one and receives feedback information immediately after training each one of its antennas. The feedback message may ask the transmitter to train another antenna; or, it may terminate the feedback/training…
We consider a spectrum-sharing cognitive radio system with antenna selection applied at the secondary transmitter (ST). Based on the extreme value theory, we deduce a simple and accurate expression for the asymptotic distribution of the signal to interference plus noise ratio at the secondary receiver. Using this result, the asymptotic mean capacity and the outage capacity for the secondary user (SU) are derived. The obtained asymptotic capacities approach the exact results as the number of transmit antennas $N$ increases. Results indicate that the rate of the SU scales as $\log(N)$ when the t…
This paper studies the large-system performance of Least Square Error (LSE) precoders which~minimize~the~input-output distortion over an arbitrary support subject to a general penalty function. The asymptotics are determined via the replica method in a general form which encloses the Replica Symmetric (RS) and Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) ansätze. As a result, the "marginal decoupling property" of LSE precoders for $b$-steps of RSB is derived. The generality of the studied setup enables us to address special cases in which the number of active transmit antennas are constrained. Our numerica…

The pilot interference and activated transmit antenna selection plays an essential role in maximizing energy efficiency. We derived the closed-form of maximal energy efficiency with complete knowledge of large-scale fading with maximum ratio transmission while accounting for channel estimation and eliminated pilot contamination when the antennas approach infinity. We investigated joint optimal antenna selection and optimal transmit power under minimized reuse…
This paper considers the joint fronthaul compression and transmit beamforming design for the uplink cloud radio access network (C-RAN), in which multi-antenna user terminals communicate with a cloud-computing based centralized processor (CP) through multi-antenna base-stations (BSs) serving as relay nodes. A compress-and-forward relaying strategy, named the VMAC scheme, is employed, in which the BSs can either perform single-user compression or Wyner-Ziv coding to quantize the received signals and send the quantization bits to the CP via capacity-limited fronthaul links; the CP performs succes…
In this paper, we study two novel massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter architectures for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications which comprise few active antennas, each equipped with a dedicated radio frequency (RF) chain, that illuminate a nearby large intelligent reflecting/transmitting surface (IRS/ITS). The IRS (ITS) consists of a large number of low-cost and energy-efficient passive antenna elements which are able to reflect (transmit) a phase-shifted version of the incident electromagnetic field. Similar to lens array (LA) antennas, IRS/ITS-aided antenna architectur…
A game theoretic framework is presented to analyze the problem of finding the optimal number of data streams to transmit in a multi-user MIMO scenario, where both the transmitters and receivers are equipped with multiple antennas. Without channel state information (CSI) at any transmitter, and using outage capacity as the utility function with zero-forcing receiver, each user is shown to transmit a single data stream at Nash equilibrium in the presence of sufficient number of users. Transmitting a single data stream is also shown to be optimal in terms of maximizing the sum of the outage capac…
The minimum average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per bit required for error-free transmission over a fading channel is derived, and is shown to be equal to that of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, which is $-1.6$ dB. Discrete-time algorithms are presented for timing and carrier synchronization, as well as channel estimation, for turbo coded multiple input multiple output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) systems. Simulation results show that it is possible to achieve a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$ at an average SNR per bit of 5.5 dB, using two transmit and …
In this paper, we propose intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) assisted secure wireless communications with multi-input and multi-output antennas (IRS-MIMOME). The considered scenario is an access point (AP) equipped with multiple antennas communicates with a multi-antenna enabled legitimate user in the downlink at the present of an eavesdropper configured with multiple antennas. Particularly, the joint optimization of the transmit covariance matrix at the AP and the reflecting coefficients at the IRS to maximize the secrecy rate for the IRS-MIMOME system is investigated, with two different a…
A novel detector for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications is presented. The algorithm belongs to the class of the lattice detectors, i.e. it finds a reduced complexity solution to the problem of finding the closest vector to the received observations. The algorithm achieves optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) performance in case of two transmit antennas, at the same time keeping a complexity much lower than the exhaustive search-based ML detection technique. Also, differently from the state-of-art lattice detector (namely sphere decoder), the proposed algorithm is suitable for a hi…
We consider a multi-user (MU) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) downlink system with M single-antenna users and N transmit antennas with a nonlinear power amplifier (PA) at each antenna. Instead of emitting constant envelope (CE) signals from the antennas to have highly power efficient PAs, we relax the CE constraint and allow the transmit signals to have instantaneous power less than or equal to the available power at each PA. The PA power efficiency decreases but simulation results show that the same performance in terms of bit-error-ratio (BER) can be achieved with less transmitted power …
A Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output wiretap channel in which the eavesdropper and legitimate receiver are equipped with arbitrary numbers of antennas and the transmitter has two antennas is studied in this paper. Under an average power constraint, the optimal input covariance to obtain the secrecy capacity of this channel is unknown, in general. In this paper, the input covariance matrix required to achieve the capacity is determined. It is shown that the secrecy capacity of this channel can be achieved by linear precoding. The optimal precoding and power allocation schemes that maximize…
In this paper, we propose modulation diversity techniques for Spatial Modulation (SM) system using Complex Interleaved Orthogonal Design (CIOD) meant for two transmit antennas. Specifically, we show that by using the CIOD for two transmit antenna system, the standard SM scheme, where only one transmit antenna is activated in any symbol duration, can achieve a transmit diversity order of two. We show with our simulation results that the proposed schemes offer transmit diversity order of two, and hence, give a better Symbol Error Rate performance than the SM scheme with transmit diversity order …
Characterizing the fundamental energy efficiency (EE) limits of MIMO broadcast channels (BC) is significant for the development of green wireless communications. We address the EE optimization problem for MIMO-BC in this paper and consider a practical power model, i.e., taking into account a transmit independent power which is related to the number of active transmit antennas. Under this setup, we propose a new optimization approach, in which the transmit covariance is optimized under fixed active transmit antenna sets, and then active transmit antenna selection (ATAS) is utilized. During the …
We consider downlink precoding in a frequency-selective multi-user massive MIMO system with highly efficient but non-linear power amplifiers at the base station (BS). A low-complexity precoding algorithm is proposed, which generates constant-envelope (CE) transmit signals for each BS antenna. To avoid large variations in the phase angle transmitted from each antenna, the difference of the phase angles transmitted in consecutive channel uses is limited to $[-απ\,,\, απ]$ for a fixed $0 < α\leq 1$. To achieve a desired per-user information rate, the extra total transmit power required under the …
One of the key features of next generation wireless communication systems will be the use of frequencies in the range 10-100GHz (aka mmWave band) in densely populated indoor and outdoor scenarios. Due to the reduced wavelength, antenna arrays with a large number of antennas can be packed in very small volumes, making thus it possible to consider, at least in principle, communication links wherein not only the base-station, but also the user device, are equipped with very large antenna arrays. We denote this configuration as a "doubly-massive" MIMO wireless link. This paper introduces the conce…
Spatial modulation (SM) is a transmission scheme that uses multiple transmit antennas but only one transmit RF chain. At each time instant, only one among the transmit antennas will be active and the others remain silent. The index of the active transmit antenna will also convey information bits in addition to the information bits conveyed through modulation symbols (e.g.,QAM). Pseudo-random phase precoding (PRPP) is a technique that can achieve high diversity orders even in single antenna systems without the need for channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and transmit power contr…
In this paper, we propose a new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with movable antennas (MAs) to exploit the antenna position optimization for enhancing the capacity. Different from conventional MIMO systems with fixed-position antennas (FPAs), the proposed system can flexibly change the positions of transmit/receive MAs, such that the MIMO channel between them is reconfigured to achieve higher capacity. We aim to characterize the capacity of MA-enabled point-to-point MIMO communication systems, by jointly optimizing the positions of transmit and receive MAs as well as…
This paper proposes a new transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme which provides enhanced physical layer security in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channels. The practical passive eavesdropping scenario we consider is where channel state information (CSI) from the eavesdropper is not available at the transmitter. Our new scheme is carried out in two steps. First, the transmitter selects the first two strongest antennas based on the feedback from the receiver, which maximizes the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the transmitter-receiver channel. Second, the Alamouti s…
The cost of radio frequency (RF) chains is the biggest drawback of massive MIMO millimeter wave networks. By employing spatial modulation (SM), it is possible to implement lower number of RF chains than transmit antennas but still achieve high spectral efficiency. In this work, we propose a system model of the SM scheme together with hybrid beamforming at the transmitter and digital combining at the receiver. In the proposed model, spatially-modulated bits are mapped onto indices of antenna arrays. It is shown that the proposed model achieves approximately 5dB gain over classical multi-user SM…
This paper is concerned with the fading MIMO-MAC with multiple receive antennas at the base station (BS) and multiple transmit antennas at each mobile terminal (MT). Two multiple-access techniques are considered for scheduling transmissions from each MT to the BS at the same frequency, which are space-division multiple-access (SDMA) and time-division multiple-access (TDMA). For SDMA, all MTs transmit simultaneously to the BS and their individual signals are resolved at the BS via multiple receive antennas while for TDMA, each MT transmits independently to the BS during mutually orthogonal time…

This paper studies the spectral/energy efficiency (SE/EE) of a heterogeneous network with the backhaul enabled by low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) quantized full-duplex massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) over Rician channels. Backhaul communication is completed over two phases. During the first phase, the macro-cell (MC) base station (BS) deploys massive receive antennas and a few transmit antennas; the small-cell (SC) BSs employ large-scale receive antennas and a single transmit antenna. For the second phase, the roles of the transmit and receive antennas are swit…
In this paper, we consider the problem of classifying the transmission system when it is not known a priori whether the transmission is via a single antenna or multiple antennas. The receiver is assumed to be employed with a known number of antennas. In a data frame transmitted by most multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, some pilot or training data is inserted for symbol timing synchronization and estimation of the channel. Our goal is to perform MIMO transmit antenna classification using this pilot data. More specifically, the problem of determining the transmission system is cast …
This letter studies the energy-efficient design in a downlink multi-antenna multi-user system consisting of a multi-antenna base station (BS) and multiple single-antenna users, by considering the practical non-linear power amplifier (PA) efficiency and the on-off power consumption of radio frequency (RF) chain at each transmit antenna. Under this setup, we jointly optimize the transmit beamforming and antenna on/off selection at the BS to minimize its total power consumption while ensuring the individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the users. However, due to t…
