In this paper, we obtain the scaling laws of the sum-rate capacity of a MIMO X-channel, a 2 independent sender, 2 independent receiver channel with messages from each transmitter to each receiver, at high signal to noise ratios (SNR). The X-channel has sparked recent interest in the context of cooperative networks and it encompasses the interference, multiple access, and broadcast channels as special cases. Here, we consider the case with partially cooperative transmitters in which only partial and asymmetric side-information is available at one of the transmitters. It is proved that when there are M antennas at all four nodes, the sum-rate scales like 2Mlog(SNR) which is in sharp contrast to [\lfloor 4M/3 \rfloor,4M/3]log(SNR) for non-cooperative X-channels \cite{maddah-ali,jafar_degrees}. This further proves that, in terms of sum-rate scaling at high SNR, partial side-information at one of the transmitters and full side-information at both transmitters are equivalent in the MIMO X-channel.
A novel compressive-sensing based signal multiplexing scheme is proposed in this paper to further improve the multiplexing gain for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. At the transmitter side, a Gaussian random measurement matrix in compressive sensing is employed before the traditional spatial multiplexing in order to carry more data streams on the available spatial multiplexing streams of the underlying MIMO system. At the receiver side, it is proposed to reformulate the detection of the multiplexing signal into two steps. In the first step, the traditional MIMO equalization can be…
In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a real-time software defined multiple input multiple output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system employing link adaptation of spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity. Real-time MIMO signal processing is implemented by using the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) devices. Software defined implantation of MIMO VLC can assist in enabling an adaptive and reconfigurable communication system without hardware changes. We measured the error vector magnitude (EVM), bit error rate (BER) and spec…
It is well known that the presence of double scattering degrades the performance of a MIMO channel, in terms of both the multiplexing gain and the diversity gain. In this paper, a closed-form expression of the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of double scattering MIMO channels is obtained. It is shown that, for a channel with nT transmit antennas, nR receive antennas and nS scatterers, the DMT only depends on the ordered version of the triple (nT,nS,nR), for arbitrary nT, nS and nR. The condition under which the double scattering channel has the same DMT as the single scattering channel i…
A contemporary perspective on the tradeoff between transmit antenna diversity and spatial multiplexing is provided. It is argued that, in the context of most modern wireless systems and for the operating points of interest, transmission techniques that utilize all available spatial degrees of freedom for multiplexing outperform techniques that explicitly sacrifice spatial multiplexing for diversity. In the context of such systems, therefore, there essentially is no decision to be made between transmit antenna diversity and spatial multiplexing in MIMO communication. Reaching this conclusion, h…
Due to the relatively high cost of deploying optical fibers, free space optical (FSO) links have been developed as a cost-effective alternative technology for next generation cellular networks. However, in order to have a practical role in the physical layer of future communication systems, data rate of FSO links must be improved. To this aim, in this paper we employ a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing scheme with two transceivers to increase the data rate of the considered FSO system. Unlike MIMO diversity case, the performance of MIMO multiplexing is significantly affected b…
In this paper, we compare the performance of two main MIMO techniques, beamforming and multiplexing, in the Terahertz (THz) band. The main problem with the THz band is its huge propagation loss, which is caused by the tremendous signal attenuation due to molecule absorption of the electro-magnetic wave. To overcome the path loss issue, massive MIMO has been suggested to be employed in the network and is expected to provide Tbps for a distance within a few meters. In this context, beamforming is studied recently as the main technique to take advantage of MIMO in THz and overcome the very high p…
We establish the optimal diversity-multiplexing (DM) tradeoff of coherent time, frequency and time-frequency selective-fading MIMO channels and provide a code design criterion for DM-tradeoff optimality. Our results are based on the analysis of the "Jensen channel" associated to a given selective-fading MIMO channel. While the original problem seems analytically intractable due to the mutual information being a sum of correlated random variables, the Jensen channel is equivalent to the original channel in the sense of the DM-tradeoff and lends itself nicely to analytical treatment. Finally, as…
This paper is concerned with spatial multiplexing analysis for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems. For a single-user mmWave system employing distributed antenna subarray architecture in which the transmitter and receiver consist of Kt and Kr subarrays, respectively, an asymptotic multiplexing gain formula is firstly derived when the numbers of antennas at subarrays go to infinity. Specifically, assuming that all subchannels have the same average number of propagation paths L, the formula implies that by employing such a distributed antenna-subarray architecture, an exact average max…
In this paper we present a novel method for decoding multiple input - multiple output (MIMO) transmission, which combines sphere decoding (SD) and zero forcing (ZF) techniques to provide near optimal low complexity and high performance constant time modified sphere decoding algorithm. This algorithm was designed especially for large number of transmit antennas, and allows efficient implementation in hardware. We do this by limiting the number of overall SD iterations. Moreover, we make sure that matrices with high condition number are more likely to undergo SD.
In this paper, we analyze the fundamental tradeoff of diversity and multiplexing in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We show that with imperfect CSIT, a higher diversity gain as well as a more efficient diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) can be achieved. In the case of multi-input single-output (MISO)/single-input multi-output (SIMO) channels with K transmit/receive antennas, one can achieve a diversity gain of d(r)=K(1-r+Kα) at spatial multiplexing gain r, where αis the CSIT quality defined in this paper. For gener…
Tradeoff in diversity, multiplexing, and delay in multihop MIMO relay networks with ARQ is studied, where the random delay is caused by queueing and ARQ retransmission. This leads to an optimal ARQ allocation problem with per-hop delay or end-to-end delay constraint. The optimal ARQ allocation has to trade off between the ARQ error that the receiver fails to decode in the allocated maximum ARQ rounds and the packet loss due to queueing delay. These two probability of errors are characterized using the diversity-multiplexing-delay tradeoff (DMDT) (without queueing) and the tail probability of r…
We establish the optimal diversity-multiplexing (DM) tradeoff for coherent selective-fading multiple-access MIMO channels and provide corresponding code design criteria. As a byproduct, on the conceptual level, we find an interesting relation between the DM tradeoff framework and the notion of dominant error event regions, first introduced in the AWGN case by Gallager, IEEE Trans. IT, 1985. This relation allows us to accurately characterize the error mechanisms in MIMO fading multiple-access channels. In particular, we find that, for a given rate tuple, the maximum achievable diversity order i…
A multi-hop relay channel with multiple antenna terminals in a quasi-static slow fading environment is considered. For both full-duplex and half-duplex relays the fundamental diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is analyzed. It is shown that, while decode-and-forward (DF) relaying achieves the optimal DMT in the full-duplex relay scenario, the dynamic decode-and-forward (DDF) protocol is needed to achieve the optimal DMT if the relay is constrained to half-duplex operation. For the latter case, static protocols are considered as well, and the corresponding achievable DMT performance is charac…
The capacity of ideal MIMO channels has a high-SNR slope that equals the minimum of the number of transmit and receive antennas. This letter analyzes if this result holds when there are distortions from physical transceiver impairments. We prove analytically that such physical MIMO channels have a finite upper capacity limit, for any channel distribution and SNR. The high-SNR slope thus collapses to zero. This appears discouraging, but we prove the encouraging result that the relative capacity gain of employing MIMO is at least as large as with ideal transceivers.
The capacity of a point-to-point discrete-time multi-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel with phase uncertainty (MIMO phase noise channel) is still open. As a matter of fact, even the pre-log (multiplexing gain) of the capacity in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime is unknown in general. We make some progresses in this direction for two classes of such channels. With phase noise on the individual paths of the channel (model A), we show that the multiplexing gain is 1/2, which implies that the capacity does not scale with the channel dimension at high SNR. With phase noise at both the…

To get channel state information (CSI) at a base station (BS), most of researches on massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems consider time division duplexing (TDD) to get benefit from the uplink and downlink channel reciprocity. Even in TDD, however, the BS still needs to transmit downlink training signals, which are referred to as channel state information reference signals (CSI-RSs) in the 3GPP standard, to support spatial multiplexing in practice. This is because there are many cases that the number of transmit antennas is less than the number of receive antennas at a user equ…
This paper proposes a joint transmitter-receiver design to minimize the weighted sum power under the post-processing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (post-SINR) constraints for all subchannels. Simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm can not only satisfy the post-SINR constraints but also easily adjust the power distribution among the users by changing the weights accordingly. Hence the algorithm can be used to alleviates the adjacent cell interference by reducing the transmitting power to the edge users without performance penalty.
We establish the optimal diversity-multiplexing (DM) tradeoff of coherent time, frequency, and time-frequency selective-fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and provide a code design criterion for DM tradeoff optimality. Our results are based on the new concept of the "Jensen channel" associated to a given selective-fading MIMO channel. While the original problem seems analytically intractable due to the mutual information between channel input and output being a sum of correlated random variables, the Jensen channel is equivalent to the original channel in the sense of the DM…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology applied with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is considered as the ultimate solution to increase channel capacity without any additional spectral resources. At the receiver side, the challenge resides in designing low complexity detection algorithms capable of separating independent streams sent simultaneously from different antennas. In this paper, we introduce an upper-lower bounded-complexity QRD-M algorithm (ULBC QRD-M). In the proposed algorithm we solve the problem of high extreme complexity of the conventional sphere deco…
In this work, we deal with resource allocation in the downlink of spatial multiplexing MIMO-OFDMA systems. In particular, we concentrate on the problem of jointly optimizing the transmit and receive processing matrices, the channel assignment and the power allocation with the objective of minimizing the total power consumption while satisfying different quality-of-service requirements. A layered architecture is used in which users are first partitioned in different groups on the basis of their channel quality and then channel assignment and transceiver design are sequentially addressed startin…
The paper describes the implementation and performance analysis of the first fully-operational beam-space MIMO antenna for the spatial multiplexing of two QPSK streams. The antenna is composed of a planar three-port radiator with two varactor diodes terminating the passive ports. Pattern reconfiguration is used to encode the MIMO information onto orthogonal virtual basis patterns in the far-field. A measurement campaign was conducted to compare the performance of the beam-space MIMO system with a conventional 2-by-?2 MIMO system under realistic propagation conditions. Propagation measurements …
This work studies the modelling and the optimization of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems through cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) links. In Part I of this work, we build up a new IRS-aided MIMO channel model, named the cascaded LoS MIMO channel. The proposed channel model consists of a transmitter (Tx) and a receiver (Rx) both equipped with uniform linear arrays, and an IRS is used to enable communications between the transmitter and the receiver through the LoS links seen by the IRS. When modeling the reflection of electromagnetic waves a…
We develop a framework to optimize the tradeoff between diversity, multiplexing, and delay in MIMO systems to minimize end-to-end distortion. We first focus on the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff in MIMO systems, and develop analytical results to minimize distortion of a vector quantizer concatenated with a space-time MIMO channel code. In the high SNR regime we obtain a closed-form expression for the end-to-end distortion as a function of the optimal point on the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curve. For large but finite SNR we find this optimal point via convex optimization. We then conside…
The fundamental generalized diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (GDMT) of the quasi-static fading MIMO Z interference channel (Z-IC) is established for the general Z-IC with an arbitrary number of antennas at each node under the assumptions of full channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) and a short-term average power constraint. In the GDMT framework, the direct link signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and cross-link interference-to-noise ratio (INR) are allowed to vary so that their ratios relative to a nominal SNR in the dB scale, i.e., the SNR/INR exponents, are fixed. It is shown that a…
The $2$ user MIMO interference channel with arbitrary antenna configurations is studied under arbitrary levels of partial CSIT for each of the channels, to find the degrees of freedom (DoF) achievable by either user while the other user achieves his full interference-free DoF. The goal is to gain new insights due to the inclusion of MIMO (multiple antennas at both transmitters and receivers) into the signal space partitioning schemes associated with partial CSIT. An interesting idea that emerges from this study is "elevated multiplexing" where the signals are split into streams and transmitted…
We investigate asymptotic capacity limits of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) with spatially correlated fading to understand when and how much transmit correlation helps the capacity. By imposing a structure on channel covariances (equivalently, transmit correlations at the transmitter side) of users, also referred to as \emph{transmit correlation diversity}, the impact of transmit correlation on the power gain of MIMO BCs is characterized in several regimes of system parameters, with a particular interest in the large-scale array (or massive MIMO) regime. Taking the cost for downlink …
The application of hybrid precoding in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been proved effective for reducing the number of radio frequency (RF) chains. However, the maximum number of independent data streams is conventionally restricted by the number of RF chains, which leads to limiting the spatial multiplexing gain. To further improve the achievable spectral efficiency (SE), in this paper we propose a novel generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided mmWave MIMO system to convey an extra data stream via the index of the active antennas group, while no…
Massive MIMO, a candidate for 5G technology, promises significant gains in wireless data rates and link reliability by using large numbers of antennas (more than 64) at the base transceiver station (BTS). Extra antennas help by focusing the transmission and reception of signal energy into ever-smaller regions of space. This brings huge improvements in throughput. However, it requires a large number of Radio Frequency (RF) chains (usually equal to number of transmit antennas), which is a major drawback. One approach to overcome these issues is to use Spatial Modulation (SM). In SM, an index of …
In this work, we investigate the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of the multiple-antenna (MIMO) static half-duplex relay channel. A general expression is derived for the DMT upper bound, which can be achieved by a compress-and-forward protocol at the relay, under certain assumptions. The DMT expression is given as the solution of a minimization problem in general, and an explicit expression is found when the relay channel is symmetric in terms of number of antennas, i.e. the source and the destination have n antennas each, and the relay has m antennas. It is observed that the static half…
A multi-hop two-way relay channel is considered in which all the terminals are equipped with multiple antennas. Assuming independent quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels and channel state information available at the receivers, we characterize the optimal diversity-multiplexing gain tradeoff (DMT) curve for a full-duplex relay terminal. It is shown that the optimal DMT can be achieved by a compress-and-forward type relaying strategy in which the relay quantizes its received signal and transmits the corresponding channel codeword. It is noteworthy that, with this transmission protocol, the two…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology for 5G cellular systems. To compensate for the severe path loss in mmWave systems, large antenna arrays are generally used to achieve significant beamforming gains. However, due to the high hardware and power consumption cost associated with radio frequency (RF) chains, it is desirable to achieve the large-antenna gains, but with only limited number of RF chains for mmWave communications. To this end, we study in this paper a new lens antenna array enabled mmWave MIMO communication system. We first show that the array response of…
The fundamental diversity-multiplexing tradeoff of the three-node, multi-input, multi-output (MIMO), quasi-static, Rayleigh faded, half-duplex relay channel is characterized for an arbitrary number of antennas at each node and in which opportunistic scheduling (or dynamic operation) of the relay is allowed, i.e., the relay can switch between receive and transmit modes at a channel dependent time. In this most general case, the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff is characterized as a solution to a simple, two-variable optimization problem. This problem is then solved in closed form for special cla…
Diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) presents a compact framework to compare various MIMO systems and channels in terms of the two main advantages they provide (i.e. high data rate and/or low error rate). This tradeoff was characterized asymptotically (SNR-> infinity) for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel by Zheng and Tse [1]. The asymptotic DMT overestimates the finite-SNR one [2]. In this paper, using the recent results on the asymptotic (in the number of antennas) outage capacity distribution, we derive and analyze the finite-SNR DMT for a broad class of channels (not necessarily Rayleigh fad…
In this work, the joint precoding across two distant transmitters (TXs), sharing the knowledge of the data symbols to be transmitted, to two receivers (RXs), each equipped with one antenna, is discussed. We consider a distributed channel state information (CSI) configuration where each TX has its own local estimate of the channel and no communication is possible between the TXs. Based on the distributed CSI configuration, we introduce a concept of distributed MIMO precoding. We focus on the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime such that the two TXs aim at designing a precoding matrix to can…
In this work, we consider a two-level hierarchical MIMO antenna array system, where each antenna of the upper level is made up of a subarray on the lower one. The concept of spatial multiplexing is applied twice in this situation: Firstly, the spatial multiplexing of a Line-of-Sight (LoS) MIMO system is exploited. It is based on appropriate (sub-)array distances and achieves multiplexing gain due to phase differences among the signals at the receive (sub-)arrays. Secondly, one or more additional reflected paths of different angles (separated from the LoS path by different spatial beams at the …
This paper considers an interference network composed of K half-duplex single-antenna pairs of users who wish to establish bi-directional communication with the aid of a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) half-duplex relay node. This channel is referred to as the "MIMO Wireless Switch" since, for the sake of simplicity, our model assumes no direct link between the two end nodes of each pair implying that all communication must go through the relay node (i.e., the MIMO switch). Assuming a delay-limited scenario, the fundamental limits in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime is analyzed usin…
Crucial developments to the recently introduced signal-space approach for multiplexing multiple data symbols using a single-radio switched antenna are presented. First, we introduce a general framework for expressing the spatial multiplexing relation of the transmit signals only from the antenna scattering parameters and the modulating reactive loading. This not only avoids tedious far-field calculations, but more importantly provides an efficient and practical strategy for spatially multiplexing PSK signals of any modulation order. The proposed approach allows ensuring a constant impedance ma…
The fundamental diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of the quasi-static fading, symmetric $2$-user MIMO interference channel (IC) with channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) and a short term average power constraint is obtained. The general case is considered where the interference-to-noise ratio (INR) at each receiver scales differently from the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receivers. The achievability of the DMT is proved by showing that a simple Han-Kobayashi coding scheme can achieve a rate region which is within a constant (independent of SNR) number of bits from a s…
In this paper, an outage limited MIMO channel is considered. We build on Zheng and Tse's elegant formulation of the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff to develop a better understanding of the asymptotic relationship between the probability of error, transmission rate, and signal-to-noise ratio. In particular, we identify the limitation imposed by the multiplexing gain notion and develop a new formulation for the throughput-reliability tradeoff that avoids this limitation. The new characterization is then used to elucidate the asymptotic trends exhibited by the outage probability curves of MIMO ch…
For broadband wireless communication systems, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been combined with Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) techniques. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing for flat fading MIMO channels. For frequency selective fading MIMO channels, BICMB with OFDM (BICMB-OFDM) can be applied to achieve both spatial diversity and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. However, analyzing the diversity of BICMB-OFDM is a challenging problem. In this paper, the diversity analysis o…
A promising waveform candidate for future joint sensing and communication systems is orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing (OFDM). For such systems, supporting multiple transmit antennas requires multiplexing methods for the generation of orthogonal transmit signals, where equidistant subcarrier interleaving (ESI) is the most popular multiplexing method. In this work, we analyze a multiplexing method called Doppler-division multiplexing (DDM). This method applies a phase shift from OFDM symbol to OFDM symbol to separate signals transmitted by different Tx antennas along the velocity axis o…
Zhang et. al. recently derived upper and lower bounds on the achievable diversity of an N_R x N_T i.i.d. Rayleigh fading multiple antenna system using transmit antenna selection, spatial multiplexing and a linear receiver structure. For the case of L = 2 transmitting (out of N_T available) antennas the bounds are tight and therefore specify the maximal diversity order. For the general case with L <= min(N_R,N_T) transmitting antennas it was conjectured that the maximal diversity is (N_T-L+1)(N_R-L+1) which coincides with the lower bound. Herein, we prove this conjecture for the zero forcing an…
This paper considers an antenna structure where a (non-large) array of radiating elements is placed at short distance in front of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We propose a channel estimation procedure using different configurations of the RIS elements and derive a closed-form expression for an achievable downlink spectral efficiency by using the popular hardening lower-bound. Next, we formulate an optimization problem, with respect to the phase shifts of the RIS, aimed at minimizing the channels cross-correlations while preserving the channels individual norms. The numerical ana…
Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system transmission is a popular diversity technique to improve the reliability of a communication system where transmitter, communication channel and receiver are the important elements. Data transmission reliability can be ensured when the bit error rate is very low. Normally, multiple antenna elements are used at both the transmitting and receiving section in MIMO Systems. MIMO system utilizes antenna diversity or spatial diversity coding system in wireless channels because wireless channels severely suffer from multipath fading in which the transmitted…
In this paper, we study how coded caching can be efficiently applied to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. This is an extension to cache-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) communications, where it is shown that with an $L$-antenna transmitter and coded caching gain $t$, a cumulative coded caching and spatial multiplexing gain of $t+L$ is achievable. We show that, interestingly, for MIMO setups with $G$-antenna receivers, a coded caching gain larger than MISO setups by a multiplicative factor of $G$ is possible, and the full coded caching and spatial multiplexing gain …
Recently, the remarkable potential of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system was unveiled for its ability to provide spatial diversity or multiplexing gains. For MIMO diversity schemes, it is already known that. by the optimal antenna selection maximizing the post-processing signal-to-noise ratio, the diversity order of the full system can be maintained. On the other hand, the diversity order achieved by antenna selection in spatial multiplexing systems, especially those exploiting practical coding and decoding schemes, has not been rigorously analyzed thus far. …
In this paper, the problem of designing a forward link linear precoder for Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems in conjunction with Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is addressed. First, we employ a novel and efficient methodology that allows for a sparse representation of multiple users and groups in a fashion similar to Joint Spatial Division and Multiplexing. Then, the method is generalized to include Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for frequency selective channels, resulting in Combined Frequency and Spatial Division and Multiplexing, a configuration …
This paper investigates the diversity order of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) based optimal transceivers in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems. While the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) analysis accurately predicts the behavior of the MMSE receiver for the positive multiplexing gain, it turned out that the performance is very unpredictable via DMT for the case of fixed rates, because MMSE strategies exhibit a complicated rate dependent behavior. In this paper, we establish the diversity-rate tradeoff performance of MIMO AF relaying syst…
Diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) was characterized asymptotically (SNR-> infinity) for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel by Zheng and Tse [1]. The SNR-asymptotic DMT overestimates the finite-SNR one [2]. This paper outlines a number of additional limitations and difficulties of the DMT framework and discusses their implications. Using the recent results on the size-asymptotic (in the number of antennas) outage capacity distribution, the finite-SNR, size-asymptotic DMT is derived for a broad class of fading distributions. The SNR range over which the finite-SNR DMT is accurately approximated …
Linear precoding is a relatively simple method of MIMO signaling that can also be optimal in certain special cases. This paper is dedicated to high-SNR analysis of MIMO linear precoding. The Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT) of a number of linear precoders is analyzed. Furthermore, since the diversity at finite rate (also known as the fixed-rate regime, corresponding to multiplexing gain of zero) does not always follow from the DMT, linear precoders are also analyzed for their diversity at fixed rates. In several cases, the diversity at multiplexing gain of zero is found not to be unique, …
Starting from first principles of wave propagation, we consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) representation of a communication system between two spatially-continuous volumes. This is the concept of holographic MIMO communications. The analysis takes into account the electromagnetic interference, generated by external sources, and the constraint on the physical radiated power. The electromagnetic MIMO model is particularized for a pair of parallel line segments in line-of-sight conditions. Inspired by orthogonal-frequency division-multiplexing, we assume that the spatially-continuou…
The problem of finding the optimal number of data streams to transmit in a multi-user MIMO scenario, where both the transmitters and receivers are equipped with multiple antennas is considered. Without channel state information at any transmitter, with a zero-forcing receiver each user is shown to transmit a single data stream to maximize its own outage capacity in the presence of sufficient number of users. Transmitting a single data stream is also shown to be optimal in terms of maximizing the sum of the outage capacities in the presence of sufficient number of users.
This paper investigates the performance of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that uses a large transmit antenna array with antenna elements spaced densely. Under the assumption of idealized uniform linear antenna arrays without mutual coupling, precoded quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission is proved to achieve the channel capacity of the massive MIMO system when the transmit antenna separation tends to zero. This asymptotic optimality is analogous to that of QPSK faster-than-Nyquist signaling.
Millimeter-wave links are of a line-of-sight nature. Hence, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in the millimeter-wave band may not achieve full spatial diversity or multiplexing. In this paper, we utilize reconfigurable antennas and the high antenna directivity in the millimeter-wave band to propose a rate-two space coding design for 2x2 MIMO systems. The proposed scheme can be decoded with a low complexity maximum-likelihood detector at the receiver and yet it can enhance the bit-error-rate performance of millimeter-wave systems compared to traditional spatial multiplexin…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or multi-antenna communication is a key technique to achieve high spectral efficiency in wireless systems. For the point-to-point MIMO channel, it is a well-known result that the channel singular value decomposition (SVD) based linear precoding and decoding achieves the channel capacity, which also diagonalizes the MIMO channel into parallel single-input single-output (SISO) sub-channels for independent encoding and decoding. However, in multi-user MIMO systems, the optimal transmit covariance of each MIMO link is generally not its channel SVD based as a r…
