We develop a framework to optimize the tradeoff between diversity, multiplexing, and delay in MIMO systems to minimize end-to-end distortion. We first focus on the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff in MIMO systems, and develop analytical results to minimize distortion of a vector quantizer concatenated with a space-time MIMO channel code. In the high SNR regime we obtain a closed-form expression for the end-to-end distortion as a function of the optimal point on the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curve. For large but finite SNR we find this optimal point via convex optimization. We then consider MIMO systems using ARQ retransmission to provide additional diversity at the expense of delay. For sources without a delay constraint, distortion is minimized by maximizing the ARQ window size. This results in an ARQ-enhanced multiplexing-diversity tradeoff region, with distortion minimized over this region in the same manner as without ARQ. Under a source delay constraint the problem formulation changes to account for delay distortion associated with random message arrival and random ARQ completion times. We use a dynamic programming formulation to capture the channel diversity-multiplexing tradeoff at finite SNR as well as the random arrival and retransmission dynamics; we solve for the optimal multiplexing-diversity-delay tradeoff to minimize end-to-end distortion associated with the source encoder, channel, and ARQ retransmissions. Our results show that a delay-sensitive system should adapt its operating point on the diversity-multiplexing-delay tradeoff region to the system dynamics. We provide numerical results that demonstrate significant performance gains of this adaptive policy over a static allocation of diversity/multiplexing in the channel code and a static ARQ window size.
This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). In this system, the paper presents a new MIMO detection approach using coding theory. The principal idea of the proposed approach is to transform a non-linear MIMO channel to a linear MIMO channel by leveraging both a $p$-level quantizer and a lattice code where $p\geq 2$. After transforming to the linear MIMO channel with the sets of finite input and output elements, efficient MIMO detection methods are proposed to attain both diversity and multiplexing gains by using a…
For MIMO two-way relay channel, this paper proposes a novel scheme, VBLAST-PNC, to transform the two superimposed packets received by the relay to their network coding form. Different from traditional schemes, which tries to detect each packet before network coding them, VBLAST-PNC detects the summation of the two packets before network coding. In particular, after firstly detecting the second layer signal in 2-by-2 MIMO system with VBLAST, we only cancel part of the detected signal, rather than canceling all the components, from the first layer. Then we directly map the obtained signal, summa…
In this paper, we first propose an universal polar coding scheme for parallel Gaussian channels with non-binary inputs. It is assumed that the encoder knows only the sum capacity of M parallel channels instead of the capacity of any single channel. By decomposing each parallel channel into T = [log2r] sub channels, we therefore obtain MT binary sub-channels. A super polar coding scheme that across all sub-channels is then proposed. This scheme can achieve the sum capacity when the block length is sufficiently large. We have also discussed the applications of parallel polar coding design for bo…
This paper studies spatial diversity techniques applied to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) diffusion-based molecular communications (DBMC). Two types of spatial coding techniques, namely Alamouti-type coding and repetition MIMO coding are suggested and analyzed. In addition, we consider receiver-side equal-gain combining, which is equivalent to maximum-ratio combining in symmetrical scenarios. For numerical analysis, the channel impulse responses of a symmetrical $2 \times 2$ MIMO-DBMC system are acquired by a trained artificial neural network. It is demonstrated that spatial diversity h…
An adaptive delay-tolerant distributed space-time coding (DSTC) scheme that exploits feedback is proposed for two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. Maximum likelihood (ML) receivers and adjustable code matrices are considered subject to a power constraint with a decode-and-forward (DF) cooperation strategy. In the proposed delay-tolerant DSTC scheme, an adjustable code matrix is employed to transform the space-time coded matrix at the relay nodes. Least-squares (LS) algorithms are developed with reduced computational complexity to adjust the parameters of the codes. Simulation results show that t…
The second-order coding rate of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) quasi-static Rayleigh fading channel is studied. We tackle this problem via an information-spectrum approach and statistical bounds based on recent random matrix theory techniques. We derive a central limit theorem (CLT) to analyze the information density in the regime where the block-length n and the number of transmit and receive antennas K and N, respectively, grow simultaneously large. This result leads to the characterization of closed-form upper and lower bounds on the optimal average error probability when the cod…
This letter investigates bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB) with perfect coding in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to achieve both maximum diversity gain and multiplexing gain. Using perfect coding with BICMB enables us to do this. We show that by using BICMB and perfect coding, the diversity gain becomes independent from the number of transmitted data streams and the number of antennas in each remote antenna unit (RAU) at the transmitter and the receiver. The assumption is that the perfect channel state information (CSI) is known…
An adaptive randomized distributed space-time coding (DSTC) scheme and algorithms are proposed for two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. Linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers and an amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperation strategy are considered. In the proposed DSTC scheme, a randomized matrix obtained by a feedback channel is employed to transform the space-time coded matrix at the relay node. Linear MMSE expressions are devised to compute the parameters of the adaptive randomized matrix and the linear receive filter. A stochastic gradient algorithm is also developed to compute the par…
This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decis…
Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding is an efficient scheme that may significantly enhance the communication link. However, this enhancement comes with a cost. Many precoding schemes require channel knowledge at the transmitter that is obtained through feedback from the receiver. Focusing on the natural common fusion of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and MIMO, we exploit the channel correlation in the frequency and spatial domain to reduce the required feedback rate in a frequency division duplex (FDD) system. The proposed feedback method is based on Huffman codin…
Millimeter-wave links are of a line-of-sight nature. Hence, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in the millimeter-wave band may not achieve full spatial diversity or multiplexing. In this paper, we utilize reconfigurable antennas and the high antenna directivity in the millimeter-wave band to propose a rate-two space coding design for 2x2 MIMO systems. The proposed scheme can be decoded with a low complexity maximum-likelihood detector at the receiver and yet it can enhance the bit-error-rate performance of millimeter-wave systems compared to traditional spatial multiplexin…
An efficient analog network coding transmission protocol is proposed in this letter for a MIMO two way cellular network. Block signal alignment is first proposed to null the inter-user interference for multi-antenna users, which makes the dimensions of aligned space larger compared with the existing signal alignment. Two algorithms are developed to jointly design the precoding matrices at the relay and BS for outage optimization. Especially, the last algorithm is designed to maximize the effective channel gain to the effective noise gain ratio. The performance of this transmission protocol is …
The space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (ST-BICM) is an efficient technique to obtain high diversity and coding gain on a block-fading MIMO channel. Its maximum-likelihood (ML) performance is computed under ideal interleaving conditions, which enables a global optimization taking into account channel coding. Thanks to a diversity upperbound derived from the Singleton bound, an appropriate choice of the time dimension of the space-time coding is possible, which maximizes diversity while minimizing complexity. Based on the analysis, an optimized interleaver and a set of linear precoders,…
We consider a downlink 1-bit quantized multiuser (MU) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system, where 1-bit digital-to-analog (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are used at the transmitter and the receiver for economical and computational efficiency. We end up with a discrete memoryless channel with input and output vectors belonging to the QPSK constellation. In the context of massive (MIMO) systems the number of base station (BS) antennas is much larger than the number of receive antennas. This leads to high input cardinality of the channel. In this work we introduce a method…
In this letter, we extend the sparse Kronecker-product (SKP) coding scheme, originally designed for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) unsourced random access (URA). With the SKP coding adopted for MIMO transmission, we develop an efficient Bayesian iterative receiver design to solve the intended challenging trilinear factorization problem. Numerical results show that the proposed design outperforms the existing counterparts, and that it performs well in all simulated settings with various antenna sizes and active-user numbers.
The optimization of joint source and channel coding for a sequence of numerous progressive packets is a challenging problem. Further, the problem becomes more complicated if the space-time coding is also involved with the optimization in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. This is because the number of ways of jointly assigning channels codes and space-time codes to progressive packets is much larger than that of solely assigning channel codes to the packets. We are unaware of any feasible and complete solution for such optimization of joint source, channel, and space-time coding o…
We propose a space-frequency (SF) block coding scheme for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system using antennas with reconfigurable radiation patterns. In this system, each element of the antenna array at the transmitter side is assumed to be reconfigurable so that it can independently change the physical characteristics of its radiation pattern. The proposed block code is full rate and benefits from spatial, frequency, and reconfigurable radiation pattern state diversity over frequency-selective fading channels. We provide simulation r…
This paper proposes a low decoding complexity, full-diversity and full-rate space-time block code (STBC) for 4 transmit and 2 receive ($4\times 2$) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. For such systems, the best code known is the DjABBA code and recently, Biglieri, Hong and Viterbo have proposed another STBC (BHV code) which has lower decoding complexity than DjABBA but does not have full-diversity like the DjABBA code. The code proposed in this paper has the same decoding complexity as the BHV code for square QAM constellations but has full-diversity as well. Compared to the best co…
This paper investigates an uplink multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), in which $K$ users with a single-antenna communicate with one base station (BS) with $n_r$ antennas. In this system, we propose a novel MIMO detection framework, which is inspired by coding theory. The key idea of the proposed framework is to create a non-linear code $\Cc$ of length $n_r$ and rate $K/n_r$ using the encoding function that is completely characterized by a non-linear MIMO channel matrix. From this, a multiuser MIMO detection problem is…
In this paper the performance limits and design principles of rateless codes over fading channels are studied. The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is used to analyze the system performance for all possible transmission rates. It is revealed from the analysis that the design of such rateless codes follows the design principle of approximately universal codes for parallel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, in which each sub-channel is a MIMO channel. More specifically, it is shown that for a single-input single-output (SISO) channel, the previously developed permutation codes …
We present a phase-aligned space-time coding scheme that expands the original Alamouti codeword to three or four transmit antennas ($N_t = 3$ or 4) with phase alignment. With $1 \sim 2$ bits feedback for the phase information, the fundamental performance penalty of $10log_{10}(N_t)$ dB of orthogonal space-time coding compared to the optimum beamforming is reduced by 1 dB (for $N_t=3$) or 2 dB (for $N_t = 4$) on average. With the proposed scheme, the full diversity order of $N_t$ is achievable, whereas the receiver architecture remains the same as the legacy Alamouti decoding with codeword size…
This paper considers an uplink multiuser massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), in which K users with a single-antenna communicate with one base station (BS) with Nr antennas. In this system, we present a novel multiuser MIMO detection framework that is inspired by coding theory. The key idea of the proposed framework is to create a code C of length 2Nr over a spatial domain. This code is constructed by a so-called auto-encoding function that is not designable but is completely described by a channel transformation followed…
An adaptive randomized distributed space-time coding (DSTC) scheme is proposed for two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. Linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver filters and randomized matrices subject to a power constraint are considered with an amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperation strategy. In the proposed DSTC scheme, a randomized matrix obtained by a feedback channel is employed to transform the space-time coded matrix at the relay node. The effect of the limited feedback and feedback errors are considered. Linear MMSE expressions are devised to compute the parameters of the adaptive …
In this paper, we propose a novel communication strategy which incorporates physical-layer network coding (PNC) into multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) two-way relay channels (TWRCs). At the heart of the proposed scheme lies a new key technique referred to as eigen-direction alignment (EDA) precoding. The EDA precoding efficiently aligns the two-user's eigen-modes into the same directions. Based on that, we carry out multi-stream PNC over the aligned eigen-modes. We derive an achievable rate of the proposed EDA-PNC scheme, based on nested lattice codes, over a MIMO TWRC. Asymptotic analysis…
A Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) based transmission scheme for the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio channel (CRC) is studied when there is imperfect and perfect channel knowledge at the transmitters (CSIT) and the receivers, respectively. In particular, the problem of optimizing the sum-rate of the MIMO CRC over the transmit covariance matrices is dealt with. Such an optimization, under the DPC-based transmission strategy, needs to be performed jointly with an optimization over the inflation factor. To this end, first the problem of determination of inflation factor ove…
The concept of well-rounded lattices has recently found important applications in the setting of a fading single-input single-output (SISO) wiretap channel. It has been shown that, under this setup, the property of being well-rounded is critical for minimizing the eavesdropper's probability of correct decoding in lower SNR regimes. The superior performance of coset codes constructed from well-rounded lattices has been illustrated in several simulations. In the present article, this work is extended to fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channels, and similar design criteria as…
We show that for the multi-antenna Gaussian multi-access channel (MAC) and broadcast channel (BC) with perfect feedback, the rate regions achieved by linear-feedback coding schemes (called linear-feedback capacity regions) coincide when the same total input-power constraint is imposed on both channels and when the MAC channel matrices are the transposes of the BC channel matrices. Such a pair of MAC and BC is called dual. We also identify sub-classes of linear-feedback coding schemes that achieve the linear-feedback capacity regions of these two channels and present multi-letter expressions fo…
In this work, a new fast-decodable space-time block code (STBC) is proposed. The code is full-rate and full-diversity for 4x2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission. Due to the unique structure of the codeword, the proposed code requires a much lower computational complexity to provide maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding performance. It is shown that the ML decoding complexity is only O(M^{4.5}) when M-ary square QAM constellation is used. Finally, the proposed code has highest minimum determinant among the fast-decodable STBCs known in the literature. Simulation results prove that th…
A wireless video transmission architecture relying on the emerging large-scale multiple-input--multiple-output (LS-MIMO) technique is proposed. Upon using the most advanced High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) (also known as H.265), we demonstrate that the proposed architecture invoking the low-complexity linear zero-forcing (ZF) detector and dispensing with any channel coding is capable of significantly outperforming the conventional small-scale MIMO based architecture, even if the latter employs the high-complexity optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) detector and a rate-$1/3$ recursive systematic…
Linear-assignment Gel'fand-Pinsker coding (LA-GPC) is a coding technique for channels with interference known only at the transmitter, where the known interference is treated as side-information (SI). As a special case of LA-GPC, dirty paper coding has been shown to be able to achieve the optimal interference-free rate for interference channels with perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In the cases where only the channel distribution information at the transmitter (CDIT) is available, LA-GPC also has good (sometimes optimal) performance in a variety of fast and slow fad…
A novel distributed space-time block code (STBC) for the next generation mobile TV broadcasting is proposed. The new code provides efficient performance within a wide range of power imbalance showing strong adaptivity to the single frequency network (SFN) broadcasting deployments. The new code outperforms existing STBCs with equivalent decoding complexity and approaches those with much higher complexities.
In this paper, we address the transmit antenna selection in multi-user MIMO systems with precoding. The optimum and reduced complexity sub-optimum antenna selection algorithms are introduced. QR-decomposition (QRD) based antenna selection is investigated and the reason behind its sub-optimality is analytically derived. We introduce the conventional QRD-based algorithm and propose an efficient QRD-based transmit antenna scheme (maxR) that is both implementation and performance efficient. Moreover, we derive explicit formulae for the computational complexities of the aforementioned algorithms. S…
Multiple antenna (MIMO) devices are widely used to increase reliability and information bit rate. Optimal error rate performance (full diversity and large coding gain), for unknown channel state information at the transmitter and for maximal rate, can be achieved by approximately universal space-time codes, but comes at a price of large detection complexity, infeasible for most practical systems. We propose a new coded modulation paradigm: error-correction outer code with space-only but time-varying precoder (as inner code). We refer to the latter as Ergodic Mutual Information (EMI) code. The …
We study the MIMO broadcast channel and compare the achievable throughput for the optimal strategy of dirty paper coding to that achieved with sub-optimal and lower complexity linear precoding (e.g., zero-forcing and block diagonalization) transmission. Both strategies utilize all available spatial dimensions and therefore have the same multiplexing gain, but an absolute difference in terms of throughput does exist. The sum rate difference between the two strategies is analytically computed at asymptotically high SNR, and it is seen that this asymptotic statistic provides an accurate character…
In this paper, we propose a signal-aligned network coding (SNC) scheme for K-user time-varying multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels with limited receiver cooperation. We assume that the receivers are connected to a central processor via wired cooperation links with individual limited capacities. Our SNC scheme determines the precoding matrices of the transmitters so that the transmitted signals are aligned at each receiver. The aligned signals are then decoded into noiseless integer combinations of messages, also known as network-coded messages, by physical-layer network…
This work considers space-time block coding for the Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC). If we suppose that the receiver is performing joint maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding, optimizing a MIMO MAC code against a fixed error event leads to a situation where the joint codewords of the users in error can be seen as a single user MIMO code. In such a case pair-wise error probability (PEP) based determinant criterion of Tarokh et al. can be used to upper bound the error probability. It was already proven by Lahtonen et al. that irrespective of the use…
In this work, spatial diversity techniques in the area of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) diffusion-based molecular communications (DBMC) are investigated. For transmitter-side spatial coding, Alamouti-type coding and repetition MIMO coding are proposed and analyzed. At the receiver-side, selection diversity, equal-gain combining, and maximum-ratio combining are studied as combining strategies. Throughout the numerical analysis, a symmetrical $2\times 2$ MIMO-DBMC system is assumed. Furthermore, a trained artificial neural network is utilized to acquire the channel impulse responses. The…
To fully support vertical industries, 5G and its corresponding channel coding are expected to meet requirements of different applications. However, for applications of 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) such as URLLC, the transmission latency is required to be much shorter than that in eMBB. Therefore, the resulting channel code length reduces drastically. In this case, the traditional 1-D channel coding suffers a lot from the performance degradation and fails to deliver strong reliability with very low latency. To remove this bottleneck, new channel coding scheme beyond the existing 1-D one is in urgent …
The design of modulation schemes for the physical layer network-coded two-way MIMO relaying scenario is considered, with $n_R$ antennas at the relay R, $n_A$ and $n_B$ antennas respectively at the end nodes A and B. We consider the denoise-and-forward (DNF) protocol which employs two phases: Multiple access (MA) phase and Broadcast (BC) phase. It is known for the network-coded SISO two-way relaying that adaptively changing the networking coding map used at the relay, also known as the denoising map, according to the channel conditions greatly reduces the impact of multiple access interference …
This article considers the massive MIMO unsourced random access problem on a quasi-static Rayleigh fading channel. Given a fixed message length and a prescribed number of channel uses, the objective is to construct a coding scheme that minimizes the energy-per-bit subject to a fixed probability of error. The proposed scheme differs from other state-of-the-art schemes in that it blends activity detection, single-user coding, pilot-aided and temporary decisions-aided iterative channel estimation and decoding, minimum-mean squared error (MMSE) estimation, and successive interference cancellation …
A joint sparse-regression-code (SPARC) and low-density-parity-check (LDPC) coding scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) massive unsourced random access (URA) is proposed in this paper. Different from the state-of-the-art covariance-based maximum likelihood (CB-ML) detection scheme, we first split users' messages into two parts. The former part is encoded by SPARCs and tasked to recover part of the messages, the corresponding channel coefficients as well as the interleaving patterns by compressed sensing. The latter part is coded by LDPC codes and then interleaved by the interleave-d…
We consider the three-receiver Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with an arbitrary number of antennas at each of the transmitter and the receivers. We investigate the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region of the channel when each receiver requests a private message, and may know some of the messages requested by the other receivers as receiver message side information (RMSI). We establish the DoF region of the channel for all 16 possible non-isomorphic RMSI configurations by deriving tight inner and outer bounds on the region. To derive the inner bounds, we first propo…
An adaptive distributed space-time coding (DSTC) scheme is proposed for two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. Linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) receive filters and adjustable code matrices are considered subject to a power constraint with an amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperation strategy. In the proposed adaptive DSTC scheme, an adjustable code matrix obtained by a feedback channel is employed to transform the space-time coded matrix at the relay node. The effects of the limited feedback and the feedback errors are assessed. Linear MMSE expressions are devised to compute the parameters of th…
A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) version of the dirty paper channel is studied, where the channel input and the dirt experience the same fading process and the fading channel state is known at the receiver (CSIR). This represents settings where signal and interference sources are co-located, such as in the broadcast channel. First, a variant of Costa's dirty paper coding (DPC) is presented, whose achievable rates are within a constant gap to capacity for all signal and dirt powers. Additionally, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed, whose decision regions are independent of …
We consider the problem of efficient ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) data detection in terahertz (THz)-band non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. We argue that the most common THz NOMA configuration is power-domain superposition coding over quasi-optical doubly-massive MIMO channels. We propose spatial tuning techniques that modify antenna subarray arrangements to enhance channel conditions. Towards recovering the superposed data at the receiver side, we propose a family of data detectors based on low-complexity channel matrix puncturing, in which higher-order d…

In this paper, we design space-time block codes (STBCs) to broadcast the common information omnidirectionally in a massive MIMO downlink. To reduce the burden of the downlink channel estimation and achieve partial spatial diversity from base station (BS) transmit antennas, we propose channel-independently precoded low-dimensional STBC. The precoding matrix and the signal constellation in the low-dimensional STBC are jointly designed to guarantee omnidirectional coverage at any instant time and sufficiently utilize the power amplifier capacities of BS transmit antennas, and at the same time, ac…
We study the problem of receive beamforming in uplink cascade multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems as an instance of that of cascade multiterminal source coding for lossy function computation. Using this connection, we develop two coding schemes for the second and show that their application leads to beamforming schemes for the first. In the first coding scheme, each terminal in the cascade sends a description of the source that it observes; the decoder reconstructs all sources, lossily, and then computes an estimate of the desired function. This scheme improves upon standard routing …
In this work we consider discrete-time multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control where the feedback consists of variable length binary codewords. To simplify the decoder architecture, we enforce a strict prefix constraint on the codewords. We develop a data compression architecture that provably achieves a near minimum time-average expected bitrate for a fixed constraint on the LQG performance. The architecture conforms to the strict prefix constraint and does not require time-varying lossless source coding, in contrast to the prior art.
In this paper, the analysis of excess distortion exponent for joint source-channel coding (JSCC) in semantic-aware communication systems is presented. By introducing an unobservable semantic source, we extend the classical results by Csiszar to semantic-aware communication systems. Both upper and lower bounds of the exponent for the discrete memoryless source-channel pair are established. Moreover, an extended achievable bound of the excess distortion exponent for MIMO systems is derived. Further analysis explores how the block fading and numbers of antennas influence the exponent of semantica…
Capacity bounds are studied for the multiple-antenna complex Gaussian relay channel with t1 transmitting antennas at the sender, r2 receiving and t2 transmitting antennas at the relay, and r3 receiving antennas at the receiver. It is shown that the partial decode-forward coding scheme achieves within min(t1,r2) bits from the cutset bound and at least one half of the cutset bound, establishing a good approximate expression of the capacity. A similar additive gap of min(t1 + t2, r3) + r2 bits is shown to be achieved by the compress-forward coding scheme.
We investigate the MIMO broadcast channel in the high SNR regime when linear filtering is applied instead of dirty paper coding. Using a user-wise rate duality where the streams of every single user are not treated as self-interference as in the hitherto existing stream-wise rate dualities for linear filtering, we solve the weighted sum rate maximization problem of the broadcast channel in the dual multiple access channel. Thus, we can exactly quantify the asymptotic rate loss of linear filtering compared to dirty paper coding for any channel realization. Having converted the optimum covarianc…
The increased throughput brought by MIMO technology relies on the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) acquired in the base station (BS). To make the CSI feedback overhead affordable for the evolution of MIMO technology (e.g., massive MIMO and ultra-massive MIMO), deep learning (DL) is introduced to deal with the CSI compression task. Based on the separation principle in existing communication systems, DL based CSI compression is used as source coding. However, this separate source-channel coding (SSCC) scheme is inferior to the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme in the finite b…
