Boolean satisfiability problems are an important benchmark for questions about complexity, algorithms, heuristics and threshold phenomena. Recent work on heuristics, and the satisfiability threshold has centered around the structure and connectivity of the solution space. Motivated by this work, we study structural and connectivity-related properties of the space of solutions of Boolean satisfiability problems and establish various dichotomies in Schaefer's framework.
On the structural side, we obtain dichotomies for the kinds of subgraphs of the hypercube that can be induced by the solutions of Boolean formulas, as well as for the diameter of the connected components of the solution space. On the computational side, we establish dichotomy theorems for the complexity of the connectivity and st-connectivity questions for the graph of solutions of Boolean formulas. Our results assert that the intractable side of the computational dichotomies is PSPACE-complete, while the tractable side - which includes but is not limited to all problems with polynomial time algorithms for satisfiability - is in P for the st-connectivity question, and in coNP for the connectivity question. The diameter of components can be exponential for the PSPACE-complete cases, whereas in all other cases it is linear; thus, small diameter and tractability of the connectivity problems are remarkably aligned. The crux of our results is an expressibility theorem showing that in the tractable cases, the subgraphs induced by the solution space possess certain good structural properties, whereas in the intractable cases, the subgraphs can be arbitrary.
For Boolean satisfiability problems, the structure of the solution space is characterized by the solution graph, where the vertices are the solutions, and two solutions are connected iff they differ in exactly one variable. In 2006, Gopalan et al. studied connectivity properties of the solution graph and related complexity issues for CSPs, motivated mainly by research on satisfiability algorithms and the satisfiability threshold. They proved dichotomies for the diameter of connected components and for the complexity of the st-connectivity question, and conjectured a trichotomy for the connecti…
Jaeger, Vertigan, and Welsh [15] proved a dichotomy for the complexity of evaluating the Tutte polynomial at fixed points: The evaluation is #P-hard almost everywhere, and the remaining points admit polynomial-time algorithms. Dell, Husfeldt, and Wahlén [9] and Husfeldt and Taslaman [12], in combination with Curticapean [7], extended the #P-hardness results to tight lower bounds under the counting exponential time hypothesis #ETH, with the exception of the line $y=1$, which was left open. We complete the dichotomy theorem for the Tutte polynomial under #ETH by proving that the number of all ac…
This paper presents a complete algorithmic study of the decision Boolean Satisfiability Problem under the classical computation and quantum computation theories. The paper depicts deterministic and probabilistic algorithms, propositions of their properties and the main result is that the problem has not an efficient algorithm (NP is not P). Novel quantum algorithms and propositions depict that the complexity by quantum computation approach for solving the Boolean Satisfiability Problem or any NP problem is lineal time.
We establish a lower bound for deciding the satisfiability of the conjunction of any two Boolean formulas from a set called a full representation of Boolean functions of $n$ variables - a set containing a Boolean formula to represent each Boolean function of $n$ variables. The contradiction proof first assumes that there exists a Turing machine with $k$ symbols in its tape alphabet that correctly decides the satisfiability of the conjunction of any two Boolean formulas from such a set by making fewer than $2^nlog_k2$ moves. By using multiple runs of this Turing machine, with one run for each B…
This paper depicts algorithms for solving the decision Boolean Satisfiability Problem. An extreme problem is formulated to analyze the complexity of algorithms and the complexity for solving it. A novel and easy reformulation as a lottery for an extreme case is presented to determine a stable complexity around $2^n$. The reformulation point out that the decision Boolean Satisfiability Problem can only be solved in exponential time. This implies there is not an efficient algorithm for the NP Class.
We establish a lower bound of $2^n$ conditional branches for deciding the satisfiability of the conjunction of any two Boolean formulas from a set called a full representation of Boolean functions of $n$ variables - a set containing a Boolean formula to represent each Boolean function of $n$ variables. The contradiction proof first assumes that there exists a Post machine (Post's Formulation 1) that correctly decides the satisfiability of the conjunction of any two Boolean formulas from such a set by following an execution path that includes fewer than $2^n$ conditional branches. By using mult…
In this paper, we analyze the argument made by Kumar in the technical report "Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Satisfiability of a Boolean Formula in CNF and Its Implications on P versus NP problem." The paper claims to present a polynomial-time algorithm that decides CNF-SAT. We show that the paper's analysis is flawed and that the fundamental underpinning of its algorithm requires an exponential number of steps on infinitely many inputs.
Given a CNF formula $F$, we present a new algorithm for deciding the satisfiability (SAT) of $F$ and computing all solutions of assignments. The algorithm is based on the concept of \emph{cofactors} known in the literature. This paper is a fallout of the previous work by authors on Boolean satisfiability \cite{sul1, sul2,sude}, however the algorithm is essentially independent of the orthogonal expansion concept over which previous papers were based. The algorithm selects a single concrete cofactor recursively by projecting the search space to the set which satisfies a CNF in the formula. This …
Boolean satisfiability problem has applications in various fields. An efficient algorithm to solve satisfiability problem can be used to solve many other problems efficiently. The input of satisfiability problem is a finite set of clauses. In this paper, properties of clauses have been studied. A type of clauses have been defined, called fully populated clauses, which contains each variable exactly once. A relationship between two unequal fully populated clauses has been defined, called sibling clauses. It has been found that, if one fully populated clause is false, for a truth assignment, the…
In the article \The State of SAT", the authors asked whether a procedure dramatically different from DPLL can be found for handling unsatisfiable instances. This study proposes a new linear programming approach to address this issue efficiently. Our experiments showed that the new method works for many unsatisfiable instances. However, we must concede that this method should be incomplete; otherwise, it will imply P=co-NP.

The standard reasoning problem, concept satisfiability, in the basic description logic ALC is PSPACE-complete, and it is EXPTIME-complete in the presence of unrestricted axioms. Several fragments of ALC, notably logics in the FL, EL, and DL-Lite family, have an easier satisfiability problem; sometimes it is even tractable. All these fragments restrict the use of Boolean operators in one way or another. We look at systematic and more general restrictions of the Boolean operators and establish the complexity of the concept satisfiability problem in the presence of axioms. We separate tractable f…
In this paper, we present a new, graph-based modeling approach and a polynomial-sized linear programming (LP) formulation of the Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT). The approach is illustrated with a numerical example.
We present a formulation of the Boolean Satisfiability Problem in spinor language that allows to give a necessary and sufficient condition for unsatisfiability. With this result we outline an algorithm to test for unsatisfiability with possibly interesting theoretical properties.
In arXiv:1710.08163 a generalization of Boolean circuits to arbitrary finite algebras had been introduced and applied to sketch P versus NP-complete borderline for circuits satisfiability over algebras from congruence modular varieties. However the problem for nilpotent (which had not been shown to be NP-hard) but not supernilpotent algebras (which had been shown to be polynomial time) remained open. In this paper we provide a broad class of examples, lying in this grey area, and show that, under the Exponential Time Hypothesis and Strong Exponential Size Hypothesis (saying that Boolean circui…
This paper depicts an algorithm for solving the Decision Boolean Satisfiability Problem using the binary numerical properties of a Special Decision Satisfiability Problem, parallel execution, object oriented, and short termination. The two operations: expansion and simplification are used to explains why using algebra grows the resolution steps. It is proved that its complexity has an upper bound of $2^{n-1}$ where $n$ is the number of logical variables of the given problem.
Satisfiability of Boolean circuits is among the most known and important problems in theoretical computer science. This problem is NP-complete in general but becomes polynomial time when restricted either to monotone gates or linear gates. We go outside Boolean realm and consider circuits built of any fixed set of gates on an arbitrary large finite domain. From the complexity point of view this is strictly connected with the problems of solving equations (or systems of equations) over finite algebras. The research reported in this work was motivated by a desire to know for which finite algebra…

In 1978, Schaefer proved his famous dichotomy theorem for generalized satisfiability problems. He defined an infinite number of propositional satisfiability problems (nowadays usually called Boolean constraint satisfaction problems) and showed that all these satisfiability problems are either in P or NP-complete. In recent years, similar results have been obtained for quite a few other problems for Boolean constraints.Almost all of these problems are variations of the satisfiability problem. In this paper, we address a problem that is not a variation of satisfiability, namely, the isomorphism …
For Boolean satisfiability problems, the structure of the solution space is characterized by the solution graph, where the vertices are the solutions, and two solutions are connected iff they differ in exactly one variable. For this implicitly defined graph, we here study the st-connectivity and connectivity problems. Building on the work of Gopalan et al. ("The Connectivity of Boolean Satisfiability: Computational and Structural Dichotomies", 2006/2009), we first investigate satisfiability problems given by CSPs, more exactly CNF(S)-formulas with constants (as considered in Schaefer's famous …
Stochastic Boolean Satisfiability (SSAT) is a logical formalism to model decision problems with uncertainty, such as Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) for verification of probabilistic systems. SSAT, however, is limited by its descriptive power within the PSPACE complexity class. More complex problems, such as the NEXPTIME-complete Decentralized POMDP (Dec-POMDP), cannot be succinctly encoded with SSAT. To provide a logical formalism of such problems, we extend the Dependency Quantified Boolean Formula (DQBF), a representative problem in the NEXPTIME-complete class, to its s…
This paper is devoted to the complexity of the Boolean satisfiability problem. We consider a version of this problem, where the Boolean formula is specified in the conjunctive normal form. We prove an unexpected result that the CNF-satisfiability problem can be solved by a deterministic Turing machine in polynomial time.
The aim of the paper is to answer a long-standing open problem on the relationship between NP and BQP. The paper shows that BQP contains NP by proposing a BQP quantum algorithm for the MAX-E3-SAT problem which is a fundamental NP-hard problem. Given an E3-CNF Boolean formula, the aim of the MAX-E3-SAT problem is to find the variable assignment that maximizes the number of satisfied clauses. The proposed algorithm runs in $O(m^2)$ for an E3-CNF Boolean formula with $m$ clauses and in the worst case runs in $O(n^6)$ for an E3-CNF Boolean formula with $n$ inputs. The proposed algorithm maximizes …
A computational problem exhibits a "gap property" when there is no tractable boundary between two disjoint sets of instances. We establish a Gap Trichotomy Theorem for a family of constraint problem variants, completely classifying the complexity of possible ${\bf NP}$-hard gaps in the case of Boolean domains. As a consequence, we obtain a number of dichotomies for the complexity of specific variants of the constraint satisfaction problem: all are either polynomial-time tractable or $\mathbf{NP}$-complete. Schaefer's original dichotomy for $\textsf{SAT}$ variants is a notable particular case. …
In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to solve the Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) problem, using noise-based logic (NBL). Contrary to what the name may suggest, NBL is not a random/fuzzy logic system. In fact, it is a completely deterministic logic system. A key property of NBL is that it allows us to apply a superposition of many input vectors to a SAT instance at the same time, circumventing a key restriction and assumption in the traditional approach to solving SAT. By exploiting the superposition property of NBL, our NBL-based SAT algorithm can determine whether an instance is SAT or n…
Holzer and Holzer (Discrete Applied Mathematics 144(3):345--358, 2004) proved that the Tantrix(TM) rotation puzzle problem is NP-complete. They also showed that for infinite rotation puzzles, this problem becomes undecidable. We study the counting version and the unique version of this problem. We prove that the satisfiability problem parsimoniously reduces to the Tantrix(TM) rotation puzzle problem. In particular, this reduction preserves the uniqueness of the solution, which implies that the unique Tantrix(TM) rotation puzzle problem is as hard as the unique satisfiability problem, and so is…
Generalised Satisfiability Problems (or Boolean Constraint Satisfaction Problems), introduced by Schaefer in 1978, are a general class of problem which allow the systematic study of the complexity of satisfiability problems with different types of constraints. In 1979, Valiant introduced the complexity class parity P, the problem of counting the number of solutions to NP problems modulo two. Others have since considered the question of counting modulo other integers. We give a dichotomy theorem for the complexity of counting the number of solutions to Generalised Satisfiability Problems modulo…
Motivated by the application of Hall's Marriage Theorem in various LP-rounding problems, we introduce a generalization of the classical marriage problem (CMP) that we call the Fractional Marriage Problem. We show that the Fractional Marriage Problem is NP-Complete by reduction from Boolean Satisfiability (SAT). We show that when we view the classical marriage problem (a.k.a. bipartite matching) as a sub-class of SAT we get a new class of polynomial-time satisfiable SAT instances that we call CMP-SAT, different from the classically known polynomial-time satisfiable SAT instances 2-SAT, Horn-SAT…
Theoretical complexity is a vital subfield of computer science that enables us to mathematically investigate computation and answer many interesting queries about the nature of computational problems. It provides theoretical tools to assess time and space requirements of computations along with assessing the difficultly of problems - classifying them accordingly. It also garners at its core one of the most important problems in mathematics, namely, the $\textbf{P vs. NP}$ millennium problem. In essence, this problem asks whether solution and verification reside on two different levels of diffi…
The paper explores the correspondence between balanced incomplete block designs (BIBD) and certain linear CNF formulas by identifying the points of a block design with the clauses of the Boolean formula and blocks with Boolean variables. Parallel classes in BIBDs correspond to XSAT solutions in the corresponding formula. This correspondence allows for transfers of results from one field to the other. As a new result we deduce from known satisfiability theorems that the problem of finding a parallel class in a partially balanced incomplete block design is NP-complete.
We investigate geometrical properties of the random K-satisfiability problem using the notion of x-satisfiability: a formula is x-satisfiable if there exist two SAT assignments differing in Nx variables. We show the existence of a sharp threshold for this property as a function of the clause density. For large enough K, we prove that there exists a region of clause density, below the satisfiability threshold, where the landscape of Hamming distances between SAT assignments experiences a gap: pairs of SAT-assignments exist at small x, and around x=1/2, but they donot exist at intermediate value…
Transient chaos is an ubiquitous phenomenon characterizing the dynamics of phase space trajectories evolving towards a steady state attractor in physical systems as diverse as fluids, chemical reactions and condensed matter systems. Here we show that transient chaos also appears in the dynamics of certain efficient algorithms searching for solutions of constraint satisfaction problems that include scheduling, circuit design, routing, database problems or even Sudoku. In particular, we present a study of the emergence of hardness in Boolean satisfiability ($k$-SAT), a canonical class of constra…

Boolean satisfiability is a propositional logic problem of interest in multiple fields, e.g., physics, mathematics, and computer science. Beyond a field of research, instances of the SAT problem, as it is known, require efficient solution methods in a variety of applications. It is the decision problem of determining whether a Boolean formula has a satisfying assignment, believed to require exponentially growing time for an algorithm to solve for the worst-case instances. Yet, the efficient solution of many classes of Boolean formulae eludes even the most successful algorithms, not only for th…
We describe an algorithm to solve the problem of Boolean CNF-Satisfiability when the input formula is chosen randomly. We build upon the algorithms of Sch{ö}ning 1999 and Dantsin et al.~in 2002. The Sch{ö}ning algorithm works by trying many possible random assignments, and for each one searching systematically in the neighborhood of that assignment for a satisfying solution. Previous algorithms for this problem run in time $O(2^{n (1- Ω(1)/k)})$. Our improvement is simple: we count how many clauses are satisfied by each randomly sampled assignment, and only search in the neighborhoods of assig…
Satisfiability solvers are increasingly playing a key role in software verification, with particularly effective use in the analysis of security vulnerabilities. String processing is a key part of many software applications, such as browsers and web servers. These applications are susceptible to attacks through malicious data received over network. Automated tools for analyzing the security of such applications, thus need to reason about strings. For efficiency reasons, it is desirable to have a solver that treats strings as first-class types. In this paper, we present some theories of strings…
This paper gives a novel approach to analyze SAT problem more deeply. First, I define new elements of Boolean formula such as dominant variable, decision chain, and chain coupler. Through the analysis of the SAT problem using the elements, I prove that we can construct a k-SAT (k>2) instance where the coefficients of cutting planes take exponentially large values in the input size. This exponential property is caused by the number system formed from the calculation of coefficients. In addition, I show that 2-SAT does not form the number system and Horn-SAT partially forms the number system acc…
In 1978, Schaefer proved his famous dichotomy theorem for generalized satisfiability problems. He defined an infinite number of propositional satisfiability problems, showed that all these problems are either in P or NP-complete, and gave a simple criterion to determine which of the two cases holds. This result is surprising in light of Ladner's theorem, which implies that there are an infinite number of complexity classes between P and NP-complete (under the assumption that P is not equal to NP). Schaefer also stated a dichotomy theorem for quantified generalized Boolean formulas, but this th…
Efficient solutions to NP-complete problems would significantly benefit both science and industry. However, such problems are intractable on digital computers based on the von Neumann architecture, thus creating the need for alternative solutions to tackle such problems. Recently, a deterministic, continuous-time dynamical system (CTDS) was proposed (Nat.Phys. {\bf 7}(12), 966 (2011)) to solve a representative NP-complete problem, Boolean Satisfiability (SAT). This solver shows polynomial analog time-complexity on even the hardest benchmark $k$-SAT ($k \geq 3$) formulas, but at an energy cost …
Hybrid logic with binders is an expressive specification language. Its satisfiability problem is undecidable in general. If frames are restricted to N or general linear orders, then satisfiability is known to be decidable, but of non-elementary complexity. In this paper, we consider monotone hybrid logics (i.e., the Boolean connectives are conjunction and disjunction only) over N and general linear orders. We show that the satisfiability problem remains non-elementary over linear orders, but its complexity drops to PSPACE-completeness over N. We categorize the strict fragments arising from dif…

In this paper, we extend the Maximum Satisfiability (MaxSAT) problem to Łukasiewicz logic. The MaxSAT problem for a set of formulae Φ is the problem of finding an assignment to the variables in Φ that satisfies the maximum number of formulae. Three possible solutions (encodings) are proposed to the new problem: (1) Disjunctive Linear Relations (DLRs), (2) Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and (3) Weighted Constraint Satisfaction Problem (WCSP). Like its Boolean counterpart, the extended fuzzy MaxSAT will have numerous applications in optimization problems that involve vagueness.

We study the detection problem of finding planted solutions in random instances of flat satisfiability problems, a generalization of boolean satisfiability formulas. We describe the properties of random instances of flat satisfiability, as well of the optimal rates of detection of the associated hypothesis testing problem. We also study the performance of an algorithmically efficient testing procedure. We introduce a modification of our model, the light planting of solutions, and show that it is as hard as the problem of learning parity with noise. This hints strongly at the difficulty of dete…
The random XORSAT problem deals with large random linear systems of Boolean variables. The difficulty of such problems is controlled by the ratio of number of equations to number of variables. It is known that in some range of values of this parameter, the space of solutions breaks into many disconnected clusters. Here we study precisely the corresponding geometrical organization. In particular, the distribution of distances between these clusters is computed by the cavity method. This allows to study the `x-satisfiability' threshold, the critical density of equations where there exist two sol…

Quantum logic was introduced in 1936 by Garrett Birkhoff and John von Neumann as a framework for capturing the logical peculiarities of quantum observables. It generalizes, and on 1-dimensional Hilbert space coincides with, Boolean propositional logic. We introduce the weak and strong satisfiability problem for quantum logic terms. It turns out that in dimension two both are also NP-complete. For higher-dimensional spaces R^d and C^d with d>2 fixed, on the other hand, we show both problems to be complete for the nondeterministic Blum-Shub-Smale model of real computation. This provides a unifie…
The Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problem (PCSP) is a recently introduced vast generalization of the Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). We investigate the computational complexity of a class of PCSPs beyond the most studied cases - approximation variants of satisfiability and graph coloring problems. We give an almost complete classification for the class of PCSPs of the form: given a 3-uniform hypergraph that has an admissible 2-coloring, find an admissible 3-coloring, where admissibility is given by a ternary symmetric relation. The only PCSP of this sort whose complexity is left open …
In the last 30 years it was found that many combinatorial systems undergo phase transitions. One of the most important examples of these can be found among the random k-satisfiability problems (often referred to as k-SAT), asking whether there exists an assignment of Boolean values satisfying a Boolean formula composed of clauses with k random variables each. The random 3-SAT problem is reported to show various phase transitions at different critical values of the ratio of the number of clauses to the number of variables. The most famous of these occurs when the probability of finding a satisf…
We consider several families of combinatorial polytopes associated with the following NP-complete problems: maximum cut, Boolean quadratic programming, quadratic linear ordering, quadratic assignment, set partition, set packing, stable set, 3-assignment. For comparing two families of polytopes we use the following method. We say that a family $P$ is affinely reduced to a family $Q$ if for every polytope $p\in P$ there exists $q\in Q$ such that $p$ is affinely equivalent to $q$ or to a face of $q$, where $\dim q = O((\dim p)^k)$ for some constant $k$. Under this comparison the above-mentioned f…
We study the satisfiability of randomly generated formulas formed by $M$ clauses of exactly $K$ literals over $N$ Boolean variables. For a given value of $N$ the problem is known to be most difficult with $α=M/N$ close to the experimental threshold $α_c$ separating the region where almost all formulas are SAT from the region where all formulas are UNSAT. Recent results from a statistical physics analysis suggest that the difficulty is related to the existence of a clustering phenomenon of the solutions when $α$ is close to (but smaller than) $α_c$. We introduce a new type of message passing al…
We study a simple and exactly solvable model for the generation of random satisfiability problems. These consist of $γN$ random boolean constraints which are to be satisfied simultaneously by $N$ logical variables. In statistical-mechanics language, the considered model can be seen as a diluted p-spin model at zero temperature. While such problems become extraordinarily hard to solve by local search methods in a large region of the parameter space, still at least one solution may be superimposed by construction. The statistical properties of the model can be studied exactly by the replica meth…
