Recently a powerful class of rate-compatible serially concatenated convolutional codes (SCCCs) have been proposed based on minimizing analytical upper bounds on the error probability in the error floor region. Here this class of codes is further investigated by combining analytical upper bounds with extrinsic information transfer charts analysis. Following this approach, we construct a family of rate-compatible SCCCs with good performance in both the error floor and the waterfall regions over a broad range of code rates.
We address the error floor problem of low-density parity check (LDPC) codes on the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, by constructing a serially concatenated code consisting of two systematic irregular repeat accumulate (IRA) component codes connected by an interleaver. The interleaver is designed to prevent stopping-set error events in one of the IRA codes from propagating into stopping set events of the other code. Simulations with two 128-bit rate 0.707 IRA component codes show that the proposed architecture achieves a much lower error floor at higher SNRs, compared …
Generalized Tanner graphs have been implicitly studied by a number of authors under the rubric of generalized parity-check matrices. This work considers the conditioning of binary hidden variables in such models in order to break all cycles and thus derive optimal soft-in soft-out (SISO) decoding algorithms. Conditionally cycle-free generalized Tanner graphs are shown to imply optimal SISO decoding algorithms for the first order Reed-Muller codes and their duals - the extended Hamming codes - which are substantially less complex than conventional bit-level trellis decoding. The study of low-co…
Spatially coupled serially concatenated codes (SC-SCCs) are a class of spatially coupled turbo-like codes, which have a close-to-capacity performance and low error floor. In this paper we investigate the impact of coupling memory, block length, decoding window size, and number of iterations on the performance, complexity, and latency of SC-SCCs. Several design tradeoffs are presented to see the relation between these parameters in a wide range. Also, our analysis provides design guidelines for SC-SCCs in different scenarios to make the code design independent of block length. As a result, bloc…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of spatial coupling on the thresholds of turbo-like codes. Parallel concatenated and serially concatenated convolutional codes as well as braided convolutional codes (BCCs) are compared by means of an exact density evolution (DE) analysis for the binary erasure channel (BEC). We propose two extensions of the original BCC ensemble to improve its threshold and demonstrate that their BP thresholds approach the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold of the uncoupled ensemble. A comparison of the different ensembles shows that parallel concatenated ensembles c…
We introduce a unified ensemble for turbo-like codes (TCs) that contains the four main classes of TCs: parallel concatenated codes, serially concatenated codes, hybrid concatenated codes, and braided convolutional codes. We show that for each of the original classes of TCs, it is possible to find an equivalent ensemble by proper selection of the design parameters in the unified ensemble. We also derive the density evolution (DE) equations for this ensemble over the binary erasure channel. The thresholds obtained from the DE indicate that the TC ensembles from the unified ensemble have similar …
In this paper, we give an overview of spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs), the spatial coupling of parallel and serially concatenated convolutional codes, recently introduced by the authors. For presentation purposes, we focus on spatially coupled serially concatenated codes (SC-SCCs). We review the main principles of SC-TCs and discuss their exact density evolution (DE) analysis on the binary erasure channel. We also consider the construction of a family of rate-compatible SC-SCCs with simple 4-state component encoders. For all considered code rates, threshold saturation of the belief prop…
In this paper, we introduce the concept of spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs), as the turbo codes counterpart of spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes. We describe spatial coupling for both Berrou et al. and Benedetto et al. parallel and serially concatenated codes. For the binary erasure channel, we derive the exact density evolution (DE) equations of SC-TCs by using the method proposed by Kurkoski et al. to compute the decoding erasure probability of convolutional encoders. Using DE, we then analyze the asymptotic behavior of SC-TCs. We observe that the belief propagation (BP)…
We define multilevel codes on bipartite graphs that have properties analogous to multilevel serial concatenations. A decoding algorithm is described that corrects a proportion of errors equal to half the Blokh-Zyablov bound on the minimum distance. The error probability of this algorithm has exponent similar to that of serially concatenated multilevel codes.
In this paper, we propose a serially concatenated turbo-encoded faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS) transceiver that takes into account FTNS-specific colored noise effects. The proposed low-complexity receiver carries out soft-decision frequency-domain equalization with the aid of the minimum-mean square error criterion while whitening the colored noise. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed multi-stage-concatenated FTNS system achieves a better error-ratio performance than previous systems that do not consider colored noise effects in the high-symbol-packing FTNS regime. Furthermo…
In this work, we give good concatenated code ensembles for the binary erasure channel (BEC). In particular, we consider repeat multiple-accumulate (RMA) code ensembles formed by the serial concatenation of a repetition code with multiple accumulators, and the hybrid concatenated code (HCC) ensembles recently introduced by Koller et al. (5th Int. Symp. on Turbo Codes & Rel. Topics, Lausanne, Switzerland) consisting of an outer multiple parallel concatenated code serially concatenated with an inner accumulator. We introduce stopping sets for iterative constituent code oriented decoding using max…
In this paper, we provide a performance analysis of a new class of serial concatenated convolutional codes (SCCC) where the inner encoder can be punctured beyond the unitary rate. The puncturing of the inner encoder is not limited to inner coded bits, but extended to systematic bits. Moreover, it is split into two different puncturings, in correspondence with inner code systematic bits and parity bits. We derive the analytical upper bounds to the error probability of this particular code structure and address suitable design guidelines for the inner code puncturing patterns. We show that the p…
Concatenation is a method of building long codes out of shorter ones, it attempts to meet the problem of decoding complexity by breaking the required computation into manageable segments. Concatenated Continuous Phase Frequency Shift Keying (CPFSK) facilitates powerful error correction. CPFSK also has the advantage of being bandwidth efficient and compatible with nonlinear amplifiers. Bandwidth efficient concatenated coded modulation schemes were designed for communication over Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN), and Rayleigh fading channels. An analytical bounds on the performance of serial…
Turbo codes and CRC codes are usually decoded separately according to the serially concatenated inner codes and outer codes respectively. In this letter, we propose a hybrid decoding algorithm of turbo-CRC codes, where the outer codes, CRC codes, are not used for error detection but as an assistance to improve the error correction performance. Two independent iterative decoding and reliability based decoding are carried out in a hybrid schedule, which can efficiently decode the two different codes as an entire codeword. By introducing an efficient error detecting method based on normalized Euc…
In this paper, we study polar codes from a practical point of view. In particular, we study concatenated polar codes and rate-compatible polar codes. First, we propose a concatenation scheme including polar codes and Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. We will show that our proposed scheme outperforms conventional concatenation schemes formed by LDPC and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. We then study two rate-compatible coding schemes using polar codes. We will see that polar codes can be designed as universally capacity achieving rate-compatible codes over a set of physically degraded channels. We…
Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) has attracted considerable attention from the research community in the past three decades, because it can achieve desirable error performance with relatively low implementation complexity for a large number of communication and storage systems. By exploiting the iterative demapping and decoding (ID), the BICM is able to approach capacity limits of coded modulation over various channels. In recent years, protograph low-density parity-check (PLDPC) codes and their spatially-coupled (SC) variants have emerged to be a pragmatic forward-error-correction (FEC…
We propose a novel scheme for rate-compatible arbitrary-length polar code construction for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The proposed scheme is based on the concept of non-uniform channel polarization. The original polar codes can only be designed with code lengths that are powers of two. Puncturing, shortening and extension are three strategies to obtain arbitrary code lengths and code rates for polar codes. There are other ways to design codes with arbitrary length but which have encoding and decoding with higher complexity such as multi-kernel, concatenated codes and spe…
We propose non-binary LDPC codes concatenated with multiplicative repetition codes. By multiplicatively repeating the (2,3)-regular non-binary LDPC mother code of rate 1/3, we construct rate-compatible codes of lower rates 1/6, 1/9, 1/12,... Surprisingly, such simple low-rate non-binary LDPC codes outperform the best low-rate binary LDPC codes so far. Moreover, we propose the decoding algorithm for the proposed codes, which can be decoded with almost the same computational complexity as that of the mother code.
In this paper, we propose a new ensemble of rateless forward error correction (FEC) codes. The proposed codes are serially concatenated codes with Reed-Solomon (RS) codes as outer codes and Kite codes as inner codes. The inner Kite codes are a special class of prefix rateless low-density parity-check (PRLDPC) codes, which can generate potentially infinite (or as many as required) random-like parity-check bits. The employment of RS codes as outer codes not only lowers down error-floors but also ensures (with high probability) the correctness of successfully decoded codewords. In addition to the…
This paper proposes a class of rate-compatible LDPC codes, called protograph-based Raptor-like (PBRL) codes. The construction is focused on binary codes for BI-AWGN channels. As with the Raptor codes, additional parity bits are produced by exclusive-OR operations on the precoded bits, providing extensive rate compatibility. Unlike Raptor codes, the structure of each additional parity bit in the protograph is explicitly designed through density evolution. The construction method provides low iterative decoding thresholds and the lifted codes result in excellent error rate performance for long-b…
