This paper describes a new set of block source codes well suited for data compression. These codes are defined by sets of productions rules of the form a.l->b, where a in A represents a value from the source alphabet A and l, b are -small- sequences of bits. These codes naturally encompass other Variable Length Codes (VLCs) such as Huffman codes. It is shown that these codes may have a similar or even a shorter mean description length than Huffman codes for the same encoding and decoding complexity. A first code design method allowing to preserve the lexicographic order in the bit domain is described. The corresponding codes have the same mean description length (mdl) as Huffman codes from which they are constructed. Therefore, they outperform from a compression point of view the Hu-Tucker codes designed to offer the lexicographic property in the bit domain. A second construction method allows to obtain codes such that the marginal bit probability converges to 0.5 as the sequence length increases and this is achieved even if the probability distribution function is not known by the encoder.
A method for encoding information in DNA sequences is described. The method is based on the precision-resolution framework, and is aimed to work in conjunction with a recently suggested terminator-free template independent DNA synthesis method. The suggested method optimizes the amount of information bits per synthesis time unit, namely, the writing rate. Additionally, the encoding scheme studied here takes into account the existence of multiple copies of the DNA sequence, which are independently distorted. Finally, quantizers for various run-length distributions are designed.
In this paper, we consider the problem of variable-length source coding allowing errors. The exponential moment of the codeword length is analyzed in the non-asymptotic regime and in the asymptotic regime. Our results show that the smooth Renyi entropy characterizes the optimal exponential moment of the codeword length.
The distributed remote source coding (so-called CEO) problem is studied in the case where the underlying source, not necessarily Gaussian, has finite differential entropy and the observation noise is Gaussian. The main result is a new lower bound for the sum-rate-distortion function under arbitrary distortion measures. When specialized to the case of mean-squared error, it is shown that the bound exactly mirrors a corresponding upper bound, except that the upper bound has the source power (variance) whereas the lower bound has the source entropy power. Bounds exhibiting this pleasing duality o…
Relative entropy coding (REC) algorithms encode a sample from a target distribution $Q$ using a proposal distribution $P$, such that the expected codelength is $\mathcal{O}(D_{KL}[Q \,||\, P])$. REC can be seamlessly integrated with existing learned compression models since, unlike entropy coding, it does not assume discrete $Q$ or $P$, and does not require quantisation. However, general REC algorithms require an intractable $Ω(e^{D_{KL}[Q \,||\, P]})$ runtime. We introduce AS* and AD* coding, two REC algorithms based on A* sampling. We prove that, for continuous distributions over $\mathbb{R}…
A novel definition of the conditional smooth Renyi entropy, which is different from that of Renner and Wolf, is introduced. It is shown that our definition of the conditional smooth Renyi entropy is appropriate to give lower and upper bounds on the optimal guessing moment in a guessing problem where the guesser is allowed to stop guessing and declare an error. Further a general formula for the optimal guessing exponent is given. In particular, a single-letterized formula for mixture of i.i.d. sources is obtained. Another application in the problem of source coding with the common side-informat…
Network Coding Capacity Regions via Entropy Functions
Entropy and differential entropy are important quantities in information theory. A tractable extension to singular random variables-which are neither discrete nor continuous-has not been available so far. Here, we present such an extension for the practically relevant class of integer-dimensional singular random variables. The proposed entropy definition contains the entropy of discrete random variables and the differential entropy of continuous random variables as special cases. We show that it transforms in a natural manner under Lipschitz functions, and that it is invariant under unitary tr…
Automating the solutions of multiple network information theory problems, stretching from fundamental concerns such as determining all information inequalities and the limitations of linear codes, to applied ones such as designing coded networks, distributed storage systems, and caching systems, can be posed as polyhedral projections. These problems are demonstrated to exhibit multiple types of polyhedral symmetries. It is shown how these symmetries can be exploited to reduce the complexity of solving these problems through polyhedral projection.
This paper proposes a novel entropy encoding technique for lossless data compression. Representing a message string by its lexicographic index in the permutations of its symbols results in a compressed version matching Shannon entropy of the message. Commercial data compression standards make use of Huffman or arithmetic coding at some stage of the compression process. In the proposed method, like arithmetic coding entire string is mapped to an integer but is not based on fractional numbers. Unlike both arithmetic and Huffman coding no prior entropy model of the source is required. Simple intu…
Index-less Indexed Flash Code (ILIFC) is a coding scheme for flash memories, in which one bit of a data sequence is stored in a slice consisting of several cells but the index of the bit is stored implicitly. Although several modified ILIFC schemes have been proposed, in this research we consider an ILIFC with inversion cells(I-ILIFC). The I-ILIFC reduces the total number of cell level changes at each writing request. Computer simulation is used to show that the I-ILIFC improves the average performance of the ILIFC in many cases. This paper presents our derivation of the lower bounds on the nu…
This paper focuses on the ultimate limit theory of image compression. It proves that for an image source, there exists a coding method with shapes that can achieve the entropy rate under a certain condition where the shape-pixel ratio in the encoder/decoder is $O({1 \over {\log t}})$. Based on the new finding, an image coding framework with shapes is proposed and proved to be asymptotically optimal for stationary and ergodic processes. Moreover, the condition $O({1 \over {\log t}})$ of shape-pixel ratio in the encoder/decoder has been confirmed in the image database MNIST, which illustrates th…
The principle of maximum entropy (Maxent) is often used to obtain prior probability distributions as a method to obtain a Gibbs measure under some restriction giving the probability that a system will be in a certain state compared to the rest of the elements in the distribution. Because classical entropy-based Maxent collapses cases confounding all distinct degrees of randomness and pseudo-randomness, here we take into consideration the generative mechanism of the systems considered in the ensemble to separate objects that may comply with the principle under some restriction and whose entropy…

Neural-based image and video codecs are significantly more power-efficient when weights and activations are quantized to low-precision integers. While there are general-purpose techniques for reducing quantization effects, large losses can occur when specific entropy coding properties are not considered. This work analyzes how entropy coding is affected by parameter quantizations, and provides a method to minimize losses. It is shown that, by using a certain type of coding parameters to be learned, uniform quantization becomes practically optimal, also simplifying the minimization of code memo…
Entropy coding is the backbone data compression. Novel machine-learning based compression methods often use a new entropy coder called Asymmetric Numeral Systems (ANS) [Duda et al., 2015], which provides very close to optimal bitrates and simplifies [Townsend et al., 2019] advanced compression techniques such as bits-back coding. However, researchers with a background in machine learning often struggle to understand how ANS works, which prevents them from exploiting its full versatility. This paper is meant as an educational resource to make ANS more approachable by presenting it from a new pe…
The context transformation and generalized context transformation methods, we introduced recently, were able to reduce zero order entropy by exchanging digrams, and as a consequence, they were removing mutual information between consecutive symbols of the input message. These transformations were intended to be used as a preprocessor for zero-order entropy coding algorithms like Arithmetic or Huffman coding, since we know, that especially Arithmetic coding can achieve a compression rate almost of the size of Shannon's entropy. This paper introduces a novel algorithm based on the concept of gen…
Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) have seen widespread use in learned image compression. They are used to learn expressive latent representations on which downstream compression methods can operate with high efficiency. Recently proposed 'bits-back' methods can indirectly encode the latent representation of images with codelength close to the relative entropy between the latent posterior and the prior. However, due to the underlying algorithm, these methods can only be used for lossless compression, and they only achieve their nominal efficiency when compressing multiple images simultaneously; t…
This work provides data-processing and majorization inequalities for $f$-divergences, and it considers some of their applications to coding problems. This work also provides tight bounds on the Rényi entropy of a function of a discrete random variable with a finite number of possible values, where the considered function is not one-to-one, and their derivation is based on majorization and the Schur-concavity of the Rényi entropy. One application of the $f$-divergence inequalities refers to the performance analysis of list decoding with either fixed or variable list sizes; some earlier bounds o…
We define an algorithm that parses multidimensional arrays sequentially into mainly unrepeated but nested multidimensional sub-arrays of increasing size, and show that the resulting sub-block pointer encoder compresses almost every realization of any finite-alphabet ergodic process on $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq0}^d$ to the entropy, in the limit.
Universal coding of integers~(UCI) is a class of variable-length code, such that the ratio of the expected codeword length to $\max\{1,H(P)\}$ is within a constant factor, where $H(P)$ is the Shannon entropy of the decreasing probability distribution $P$. However, if we consider the ratio of the expected codeword length to $H(P)$, the ratio tends to infinity by using UCI, when $H(P)$ tends to zero. To solve this issue, this paper introduces a class of codes, termed generalized universal coding of integers~(GUCI), such that the ratio of the expected codeword length to $H(P)$ is within a constan…
