One of the features characterizing almost every multiple access (MA) communication system is the processing gain. Through the use of spreading sequences, the processing gain of Random CDMA systems (RCDMA), is devoted to both bandwidth expansion and orthogonalization of the signals transmitted by different users. Another type of multiple access system is Impulse Radio (IR). In many aspects, IR systems are similar to time division multiple access (TDMA) systems, and the processing gain of IR systems represents the ratio between the actual transmission time and the total time between two consecutive ransmissions (on-plus-off to on ratio). While CDMA systems, which constantly excite the channel, rely on spreading sequences to orthogonalize the signals transmitted by different users, IR systems transmit a series of short pulses and the orthogonalization between the signals transmitted by different users is achieved by the fact that most of the pulses do not collide with each other at the receiver.
In this paper, a general class of MA communication systems that use both types of processing gain is presented, and both IR and RCDMA systems are demonstrated to be two special cases of this more general class of systems. The bit error rate (BER) of several receivers as a function of the ratio between the two types of processing gain is analyzed and compared under the constraint that the total processing gain of the system is large and fixed. It is demonstrated that in non inter-symbol interference (ISI) channels there is no tradeoff between the two types of processing gain. However, in ISI channels a tradeoff between the two types of processing gain exists. In addition, the sub-optimality of RCDMA systems in frequency selective channels is established.
The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) provides a fundamental performance metric for different multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) schemes in wireless communications. In this paper, we explore the block fading optical wireless communication (OWC) channels and characterize the DMT in the presence of both optical peak- and average-power constraints. Three different fading distributions are considered, which reflect different channel conditions. In each channel condition, we obtain the optimal DMT when the block length is sufficiently large, and we also derive the lower and upper bounds of t…
The ongoing commercial deployment of millimeter wave systems brings into focus a number of practical issues in form factor user equipment (UE) design. With wavelengths becoming smaller, antenna gain patterns becoming directional, and link budgets critically dependent on beamforming, it becomes imperative to use a number of antenna modules at different locations of the UE for good performance. While more antennas/modules can enhance beamforming array gains, it comes with the tradeoff of higher component cost, power consumption of the associated radio frequency circuitry, and a beam management o…
This paper studies the fundamental tradeoff between storage and latency in a general wireless interference network with caches equipped at all transmitters and receivers. The tradeoff is characterized by an information-theoretic metric, \emph{normalized delivery time} (NDT), which is the worst-case delivery time of the actual traffic load at a transmission rate specified by degrees of freedom (DoF) of a given channel. We obtain both an achievable upper bound and a theoretical lower bound of the minimum NDT for any number of transmitters, any number of receivers, and any feasible cache size tup…
To improve diversity gain in an interference channel and hence to maximize diversity multiplexing tradeoff (DMT), we propose on-off switched interference alignment (IA) where IA is intermittently utilized by switching IA on/off. For on-off switching, either IA with symbol extension or IA with Alamouti coding is adopted in this paper. Deriving and analyzing DMT of the proposed schemes, we reveal that the intermittent utilization of IA with simultaneous non-unique decoding can improve DMT in the 2-user X-channel with two antennas. Both the proposed schemes are shown to achieve diversity gain of …
A hybrid-duplex aeronautical communication system (HBD-ACS) consisting of a full-duplex (FD) enabled ground station (GS), and two half-duplex (HD) air-stations (ASs) is proposed as a direct solution to the spectrum crunch faced by the aviation industry. Closed-form outage probability and finite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) diversity gain expressions in aeronautical communications over Rician fading channels are derived for a successive interference cancellation (SIC) detector. Similar expressions are also presented for an interference ignorant (II) detector and HD-equivalent modes at GS and ASs…
On the Achievable Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoffs in Half-Duplex Cooperative Channels
Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are a major contributor to the power consumption of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems with large number of antennas. Use of low resolution ADCs has been proposed as a means to decrease power consumption in MIMO receivers. However, reducing the ADC resolution leads to performance loss in terms of achievable transmission rates. In order to mitigate the rate-loss, the receiver can perform analog processing of the received signals before quantization. Prior works consider one-shot analog processing where at each channel-use, analog line…
Recently, Muralidhar et al. proposed a novel multi-access system model where each user is connected to multiple caches in a manner that follows the well-known combinatorial topology of combination networks. For such multi-access topology, the same authors proposed an achievable scheme, which stands out for the unprecedented coding gains even with very modest cache resources. In this paper, we identify the fundamental limits of such multi-access setting with exceptional potential, providing an information-theoretic converse which establishes, together with the inner bound by Muralidhar et al., …
This letter studies a wireless system consisting of distributed ground terminals (GTs) communicating with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that serves as a mobile base station (BS). The UAV flies cyclically above the GTs at a fixed altitude, which results in a cyclical pattern of the strength of the UAV-GT channels. To exploit such periodic channel variations, we propose a new cyclical multiple access (CMA) scheme to schedule the communications between the UAV and GTs in a cyclical time-division manner based on the flying UAV's position. The time allocations to different GTs are optimized to m…
In this paper, we investigate the performance of conventional cooperative sensing (CCS) and superior selective reporting (SSR)-based cooperative sensing in an energy harvesting-enabled heterogeneous cognitive radio network (HCRN). In particular, we derive expressions for the achievable throughput of both schemes and formulate nonlinear integer programming problems, in order to find the throughput-optimal set of spectrum sensors scheduled to sense a particular channel, given primary user (PU) interference and energy harvesting constraints. Furthermore, we present novel solutions for the underly…
Due to the recent popularity of online social networks, coupled with people's propensity to disclose personal information in an effort to achieve certain gratifications, the problem of navigating the tradeoff between privacy and utility attracted a lot of recent interest and generated a rich body of research. A critical prerequisite to solving the problem is to appropriately capture the privacy and the utility aspects in the problem formulation. Most of the existing works' focus is on the notion of privacy, while utility loss is often treated as the undesirable but necessary distortion of the …
This paper considers a single-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system equipped with a base station (BS) that uses one-bit quantization and investigates the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) trade-off. We first propose a new precoding scheme and downlink power allocation strategy that results in uplink-downlink SINR duality for one-bit MIMO systems. Taking into account the effect of the imperfect channel state information, we obtain approximate closed-form expressions for the uplink and downlink achievable rates under duality with maximum ratio combining/matc…
All Lossy compression algorithms employ similar compression schemes -- frequency domain transform followed by quantization and lossless encoding schemes. They target tradeoffs by quantizating high frequency data to increase compression rates which come at the cost of higher image distortion. We propose a new method of optimizing quantization tables using Deep Learning and a minimax loss function that more accurately measures the tradeoffs between rate and distortion parameters (RD) than previous methods. We design a convolutional neural network (CNN) that learns a mapping between image blocks …
We consider single-source single-sink (ss-ss) multi-hop networks, with slow-fading links and single-antenna half-duplex relays. We identify two families of networks that are multi-hop generalizations of the well-studied two-hop network: K-Parallel-Path (KPP) networks and layered networks. KPP networks can be viewed as the union of K node-disjoint parallel relaying paths, each of length greater than one. KPP networks are then generalized to KPP(I) networks, which permit interference between paths and to KPP(D) networks, which possess a direct link from source to sink. We characterize the DMT of…
We consider a distributed edge computing scenario consisting of several wireless nodes that are located over an area of interest. Specifically, some of the "master" nodes are tasked to sense the environment (e.g., by acquiring images or videos via cameras) and process the corresponding sensory data, while the other nodes are assigned as "workers" to help the computationally-intensive processing tasks of the masters. A new tradeoff that has not been previously explored in the existing literature arises in such a formulation: On one hand, one wishes to allocate as many master nodes as possible t…
Degraded K-user broadcast channels (BC) are studied when receivers are facilitated with cache memories. Lower and upper bounds are derived on the capacity-memory tradeoff, i.e., on the largest rate of reliable communication over the BC as a function of the receivers' cache sizes, and the bounds are shown to match for some special cases. The lower bounds are achieved by two new coding schemes that benefit from non-uniform cache assignment. Lower and upper bounds are also established on the global capacity-memory tradeoff, i.e., on the largest capacity-memory tradeoff that can be attained by opt…
