The new numerical approach for consideration of quantum dynamics and calculations of the average values of quantum operators and time correlation functions in the Wigner representation of quantum statistical mechanics has been developed. The time correlation functions have been presented in the form of the integral of the Weyl's symbol of considered operators and the Fourier transform of the product of matrix elements of the dynamic propagators. For the last function the integral Wigner- Liouville's type equation has been derived. The numerical procedure for solving this equation combining both molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods has been developed. For electrons in disordered systems of scatterers the numerical results have been obtained for series of the average values of the quantum operators including position and momentum dispersions, average energy, energy distribution function as well as for the frequency dependencies of tensor of electron conductivity and permittivity according to quantum Kubo formula. Zero or very small value of static conductivity have been considered as the manifestation of Anderson localization of electrons in 1D case. Independent evidence of Anderson localization comes from the behaviour of the calculated time dependence of position dispersion.
We study the counterpart of Anderson localization in driven one-electron Rydberg atoms. By changing the initial Rydberg state at fixed microwave frequency and interaction time, we numerically monitor the crossover from Anderson localization to the photo effect in the atomic ionization signal.
We experimentally test the universality of the Anderson three dimensional metal-insulator transition. Nine sets of parameters controlling the microscopic details of this second order phase transition have been tested. The corresponding critical exponents are independent (within $2σ$) of these microscopic details, and the average value $1.63\pm0.05$ is in very good agreement with the numerically predicted value, $ν= 1.58$.
We present a microscopic derivation of self-consistent equations of Anderson localization in a disordered medium of finite size. The derivation leads to a renormalized, position-dependent diffusion coefficient. The position dependence of the latter is due to the position dependence of return probability in a bounded medium.
With the advent of spatially resolved fluorescence imaging in quantum gas microscopes, it is now possible to directly image glassy phases and probe the local effects of disorder in a highly controllable setup. Here we present numerical calculations using a spatially-resolved local mean-field theory, show that it captures the essential physics of the disordered system and use it to simulate the density distributions seen in single-shot fluorescence microscopy. From these simulated images we extract local properties of the phases which are measurable by a quantum gas microscope and show that una…
Experimental evidence demonstrating that anomalous localization of waves can be induced in a controllable manner is reported. A microwave waveguide with dielectric slabs randomly placed is used to confirm the presence of anomalous localization. If the random spacing between slabs follows a distribution with a power-law tail (Lévy-type distribution), unconventional properties in the microwave-transmission fluctuations take place revealing the presence of anomalous localization. We study both theoretically and experimentally the complete distribution of the transmission through random waveguides…

We study (1+1)D transverse localization of electromagnetic radiation at microwave frequencies directly by two-dimensional spatial scans. Since the longitudinal direction can be mapped onto time, our experiments provide unique snapshots of the build-up of localized waves. The evolution of the wave functions is compared with numerical calculations. Dissipation is shown to have no effect on the occurrence of transverse localization. Oscillations of the wave functions are observed in space and explained in terms of a beating between the eigenstates.
We present a large N solution of a microscopic model describing the Mott-Anderson transition on a finite-coordination Bethe lattice. Our results demonstrate that strong spatial fluctuations, due to Anderson localization effects, dramatically modify the quantum critical behavior near disordered Mott transitions. The leading critical behavior of quasiparticle wavefunctions is shown to assume a universal form in the full range from weak to strong disorder, in contrast to disorder-driven non-Fermi liquid ("electronic Griffiths phase") behavior, which is found only in the strongly correlated regime…
We prove localization and probabilistic bounds on the minimum level spacing for a random block Anderson model without monotonicity. Using a sequence of narrowing energy windows and associated Schur complements, we obtain detailed probabilistic information about the microscopic structure of energy levels of the Hamiltonian, as well as the support and decay of eigenfunctions.
Signatures of strong Anderson localization in the momentum distribution of a cold atom cloud after a quantum quench are studied. We consider a quasi one-dimensional cloud initially prepared in a well defined momentum state, and expanding for some time in a disorder speckle potential. Anderson localization leads to a formation of a coherence peak in the \emph{forward} scattering direction (as opposed to the common weak localization backscattering peak). We present a microscopic, and fully time resolved description of the phenomenon, covering the entire diffusion--to--localization crossover. Our…
The nature of transport of electrons and classical waves in disordered systems depends upon the proximity to the Anderson localization transition between freely diffusing and localized waves. The suppression of average transport and the enhancement of relative fluctuations in conductance in one-dimensional samples with lengths greatly exceeding the localization length, $L\gg ξ$, are related in the single parameter scaling (SPS) theory of localization. However, the difficulty of producing an ensemble of statistically equivalent samples in which the electron wavefunction is temporally coherent h…
Anderson localization is related to exponential localization of a particle in the configuration space in the presence of a disorder potential. Anderson localization can be also observed in the momentum space and corresponds to quantum suppression of classical diffusion in systems that are classically chaotic. Another kind of Anderson localization has been recently proposed, i.e. localization in the time domain due to the presence of {\it disorder} in time. That is, the probability density for the detection of a system at a fixed position in the configuration space is localized exponentially ar…

We study Anderson localization in a generalized discrete time quantum walk - a unitary map related to a Floquet driven quantum lattice. It is controlled by a quantum coin matrix which depends on four angles with the meaning of potential and kinetic energy, and external and internal synthetic flux. Such quantum coins can be engineered with microwave pulses in qubit chains. The ordered case yields a two-band eigenvalue structure on the unit circle which becomes completely flat in the limit of vanishing kinetic energy. Disorder in the external magnetic field does not impact localization. Disorder…
In a disordered environment, the probability of transmission of a wave reduces with increasing disorder, the ultimate limit of which is the near-zero transmission due to Anderson localization. Under localizing conditions, transport is arrested because the wave is trapped in the bulk of the sample with decaying-exponential coupling to the boundaries. Any further increase in disorder does not modify the overall transport properties. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of a hitherto-unrealized anomalous transport of hybrid particles under localizing disorder in a non-Hermitian setting.…
We measure the field transmission matrix t for microwave radiation propagating through random waveguides in the crossover to Anderson localization. From these measurements, we determine the dimensionless conductance, g, and the individual eigenvalues $τ_n$ of the transmission matrix $tt^\dagger$ whose sum equals g. In diffusive samples, the highest eigenvalue, $τ_1$, is close to unity corresponding to a transmission of nearly 100%, while for localized waves, the average of $τ_1$, is nearly equal to g. We find that the spacing between average values of $\lnτ_n$ is constant and demonstrate that …
We solve the Anderson localization problem on a two-leg ladder by the Fokker-Planck equation approach. The solution is exact in the weak disorder limit at a fixed inter-chain coupling. The study is motivated by progress in investigating the hybrid particles such as cavity polaritons. This application corresponds to parametrically different intra-chain hopping integrals (a "fast" chain coupled to a "slow" chain). We show that the canonical Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar (DMPK) equation is insufficient for this problem. Indeed, the angular variables describing the eigenvectors of the transmission …
Tunneling between two classically disconnected regular regions can be strongly affected by the presence of a chaotic sea in between. This phenomenon, known as chaos-assisted tunneling, gives rise to large fluctuations of the tunneling rate. Here we study chaos-assisted tunneling in the presence of Anderson localization effects in the chaotic sea. Our results show that the standard tunneling rate distribution is strongly modified by localization, going from the known Cauchy distribution in the ergodic regime to a log-normal distribution in the strongly localized case. We develop an analytical s…
We propose a definition of microcanonical and canonical statistical ensembles based on the concept of density of states. This definition applies both to the classical and the quantum case. For the microcanonical case this allows for a definition of a temperature and its fluctuation, which might be useful in the theory of mesoscopic systems. In the quantum case the concept of density of states applies to one-particle Schroedinger operators, in particular to operators with a periodic potential or to random Anderson type models. In the case of periodic potentials we show that for the resulting $n…
Anderson localization is a general phenomenon of wave physics, which stems from the interference between multiple scattering paths1,2. It was originally proposed for electrons in a crystal, but later was also observed for light3-5, microwaves6, ultrasound7,8, and ultracold atoms9-12. Actually, in a crystal, besides electrons there may exist other quasiparticles such as magnons and spinons. However the search for Anderson localization of these magnetic excitations is rare so far. Here we report the first observation of spinon localization in copper benzoate, an ideal compound of spin-1/2 antife…
We present direct experimental evidences of Anderson localization induced by the intrinsic alloy compositional disorder of InGaN/GaN quantum wells. Our approach relies on the measurement of the luminescence spectrum under local injection of electrons from a scanning tunneling microscope tip into a near-surface single quantum well. Fluctuations in the emission line shape are observed on a few-nanometer scale. Narrow emission peaks characteristic of single localized states are resolved. Calculations in the framework of the localization landscape theory provide the effective confining potential m…
Anderson localization is a universal phenomenon affecting non-interacting quantum particles in disorder. In three spatial dimensions it becomes particularly interesting to study because of the presence of a quantum phase transition from localized to extended states, predicted by P.W. Anderson in his seminal work, taking place at a critical energy, the so-called mobility edge. The possible relation of the Anderson transition to the metal-insulator transitions observed in materials has originated a flurry of theoretical studies during the past 50 years, and it is now possible to predict very acc…
