The anomalous Hall coefficient Rs has been studied for the reentrant spin glass system Fe0.7Al0.3 by measuring the magnetization M and the Hall resistivity r_H. We have found that R_s exhibits anomalous temperature dependence at the spin-glass transition temperature T_G, indicating that an additional term appears along with the beginning of the spin glass phase. The result is discussed in relation to the recent proposal of the chirality mechanism of the Hall effect in the spin glass phase.
A recent paper from Raveau's group asserts that the specially designed CHUF measurement protocol serves to bring out a special feature of the magnetic glass state. This protocol, enunciated and applied in our publications since over three years, allows establishing phase coexistence through macroscopic measurements and distinguishing the metastable and stable phases (amongst the coexisting phase fractions across a first order magnetic transition) of a glass-like arrested state. In view of the recent report of the vitrification of monoatomic germanium under pressure, we discuss the applicabilit…
The ground state properties of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy of nominal composition Ni2Mn1.36Sn0.64 have been studied by dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. Like few other Ni-Mn based alloys, this sample exhibits exchange bias phenomenon. The observed exchange bias pinning was found to originate right from the temperature where a step-like anomaly is present in the zero-field-cooled magnetization data. The ac susceptibility study indicates the onset of spin glass freezing near this step-like anomaly with clear frequency shift. The sample can be identified as a reentrant…
We have carried out a comprehensive investigation of magnetic properties of LuFe$_2$O$_4$, using AC susceptibility, DC magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic phase transition around $\sim$236 K was observed with DC magnetization and specific heat measurements, which is identified as a paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition based on the nonlinear susceptibility data. Upon further cooling below this temperature, we also observed highly relaxational magnetic behavior: the DC magnetization exhibits history and time dependence, and the real and imaginary part of the AC susceptibility shows l…
We report here a detailed study of AC/DC magnetization and longitudinal/transverse transport properties of La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals below $T_{c}$ = 121 K. We find that the resistivity upturn below 40 K is related to the reentrant spin glass phase at the same temperature, accompanied by additional anomalous Hall effects. The carrier concentration from the ordinary Hall effects remains constant during the transition and is close to the nominal doping level (0.4 holes/Mn). The spin glass behavior comes from the competition between ferromagnetic double exchange and antif…
We study the evolution of the low-temperature field-induced magnetic defects observed under an applied magnetic field in a series of frustrated amorphous ferromagnets (Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{75}$P$_{16}$B$_{3}$Al$_{3}$ (a-FeMn). Combining small-angle neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the morphology of these defects resemble that of quasi-bidimensional spin vortices. They are observed in the reentrant spin-glass (RSG) phase, up to the critical concentration $x_{\rm C} \approx 0.36$ which separates the RSG and "true" spin glass (SG) within the low temperature part of th…
We investigated the physical properties of $TlFe_{2-x}Se_2$ single crystals. The resistivity of $TlFe_{2-x}Se_2$ shows typical semiconductor behavior with an activation energy of 25 meV. DC susceptibility indicates an antiferromagnetic transition at about 450 K. Reentrant spin-glass (RSG) behavior was found at about 130 K through DC and AC magnetic measurements. The RSG behavior suggests the existence of a strong competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions due to Fe deficiencies. Strong electron-electron correlation may exist in this material and it is possi…
An oxyborate Co2AlBO5 belonging to the ludwigite family is investigated using structural, thermodynamic, dielectric and magnetic measurements. Magnetic measurements indicate that this system is seen to exhibit long range magnetic ordering at T{_N} = 42 K, signatures of which are also seen in the specific heat, dielectric susceptibility, and the lattice parameters. The absence of a structural phase transition down to the lowest measured temperatures, distinguishes it from the more extensively investigated Fe-based ludwigites. At low temperatures, the system is seen to stabilize in a reentrant s…
A new iridium containing layered cuprate material, IrSr_2Sm_{1.15}Ce_{0.85}Cu_{2.175}O_{10, has been synthesized by conventional ambient-pressure solid-state techniques. The material's structure has been fully characterized by Rietveld refinement of high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction data; tilts and rotations of the IrO_6 octahedra are observed as a result of a bond mismatch between in-plane Ir-O and Cu-O bond lengths. DC-susceptibility measurements evidence a complex set of magnetic transitions upon cooling that are characteristic of a reentrant spin-glass ground-state. The glassy …
When suppressing the itinerant antiferromagnetism in chromium by doping with the isostructual itinerant ferromagnet iron, a dome of spin-glass behavior emerges around a putative quantum critical point at an iron concentration $x \approx 0.15$. Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of polycrystalline samples of Fe$_{x}$Cr$_{1-x}$ in the range $0.05 \leq x \leq 0.30$ using x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, ac susceptibility, and neutron depolarization measurements, complemented by specific heat and electrical resistivity data for $x = 0.15$. Besides antiferromagnetic ($x < 0.15$) …
The magnetization in a lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.018$) single crystal was measured. Spin-flop transition was clearly observed in the hole doped antiferromagnetically ordered state under increasing magnetic fields perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ plane. In the spin-glass phase below 25K, the spin-flop transition becomes broad but the step in the magnetization curve associated with the transition remains finite at the lowest temperature. We show in this report that, at low temperature, the homogeneous antiferromagnetic order is disturbed by the re-distribution of holes, and that th…
Reentrant spin glasses are frustrated disordered ferromagnets developing vortex-like textures under an applied magnetic field. Our study of a Ni$_{0.81}$Mn$_{0.19}$ single crystal by small angle neutron scattering clarifies their internal structure and shows that these textures are randomly distributed. Spin components transverse to the magnetic field rotate over length scales of 3-15 nm in the explored field range, decreasing as field increases according to a scaling law. Monte-Carlo simulations reveal that the internal structure of the vortices is strongly distorted and differs from that ass…
We report temperature (T) dependence (2-330 K) of DC and AC magnetization (M), isothermal remnant magnetization (M_IRM), heat capacity (C), electrical resistivity (rho), and magnetoresistance (MR) of a ternary intermetallic compound, Gd4PtAl, crystallizing in a cubic (space group F-43m) structure. In this structure, there are three sites for the rare-earth. The magnetization data reveal that, in addition to a magnetic transition at 64 K, there is another magnetic feature below 20 K. The C(T) data reveal an upturn below 64 K, shifting to a lower temperature with increasing field, which establis…
We present here a detailed investigation into the magnetic ordering of full Heusler alloy Ga$_2$MnCo using dc, ac magnetization measurements, neutron diffraction and neutron depolarization experiments. Crystal structure at room temperature was first confirmed to be L2$_1$ using the highly intense synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Temperature dependent magnetization reveals that Ga$_2$MnCo enters a ferromagnetic (FM) state at $T_C = $154 K, characterized by a sharp increase in magnetization and a plateau-like region hereafter. As the temperature is decreased further, a sharp drop i…
We report the results of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization measurements (T= 2-300 K) on the single crystals of a metallic kagome lattice, Tb3Ru4Al12, reported recently to undergo reentrant magnetism with the onset of long range antiferromagnetic order below (TN=) 22K. The magnetization data obtained on the crystal with the c-axis orientation along magnetic-field reveal spin-glass-like characteristics near 17 K (below TN). However, for the orientation along basal plane, such glassy anomalies are not observable above 2 K. In this respect, this compound behaves like a…
We report that the spin-chain compound Dy2BaNiO5 recently proven to exhibit magnetoelectric coupling below its Neel temperature (T_N) of 58 K, exhibits strong frequency-dependent behavior in ac magnetic susceptibility and complex dielectric properties at low temperatures (<10K), mimicking 'reentrant' multiglass phenomenon. Such a behavior is not known among undoped compounds. A new finding in the field of multiferroics is that the characteristic magnetic feature at such low temperatures moves towards higher temperatures in the presence of a magnetic-field (H), whereas the corresponding dielect…
Transport and magnetic studies on polycrystalline samples of SrFe1-xCoxO3-d have been carried out to investigate the relationship between the magnetic structure and the anomalous Hall resistivity rH. The hysteretic behavior of the magnetization observed in the measurements with varying temperature T up and then down after zero field cooling indicates that the system has the reentrant spin-glass phase, which is supported by the increasing width of the magnetic reflections observed by neutron diffraction with decreasing T below the Curie temperature TC. Detailed analyses of the observed Hall res…
The magnetic ground state of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy of nominal composition Cu$_{2.84}$Mn$_{0.44}$Al$_{0.72}$ was investigated. The sample shows reentry of a glassy magnetic phase below the martensitic transition temperature, which is found to have complex character with two distinct anomalies in the temperature dependent ac susceptibility data. The sample retains its glassy phase even below the second transition as evident from the magnetic memory measurements in different protocols. Existence of two transitions along with their observed nature suggest that the system can be desc…
Evidence for reentrant quantum paraelectric state preceded by a multiglass phase with non-classical exponent and magnetodielectric coupling in SrFe12O19
Using ac susceptibility, dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements, we have investigated the magnetic properties of $Cd_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Cr_2O_4$. $Cd_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Cr_2O_4$ has an extraordinary magnetic phase including a metastable spin-glass(SG) phase at zero field, a possible phase separation scenario of AFM/FM above $\sim 0.5T$ field, and at intermediate fields, an apparent pseudo reentrant spin-glass (RSG) plateau is observed. These phenomena are closely correlated with the pinning effect of the $Cu^{2+}$ sublattice on the frustrated lattice.
An attempt is made to resolve the controversy related to the low temperature phase (ground state) of the low-doped ferromagnetic (FM)- insulator(I) manganite through bulk magnetic measurements on La${_{0.9}}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO${_3}$ sample. It is shown that the FM phase, formed out of well defined transition in the low-doped system, becomes inhomogeneous with decrease in temperature. This inhomogeniety is considered to be an outcome of the formation of orbital domain state of e$_g$-electrons having hole rich (metallic) walls separating the hole deficient (insulating) regions. The resulting complexi…
We report neutron depolarization measurements of the suppression of long-range ferromagnetism and the emergence of magnetic irreversibilities and spin freezing in CePd$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ around $x^*\approx0.6$. Tracking the temperature versus field history of the neutron depolarization, we find clear signatures of long-range Ising ferromagnetism below a Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}$ for $x=0.4$ and a spin freezing of tiny ferromagnetic clusters below a freezing temperature $T_{\rm F1}$ for $x>x^*$. Under zero-field-cooling/field-heating and for $x>x^*$ a reentrant temperature dependence of the neut…
The development of spin glass like state in a geometrically frustrated (GF) magnet is a matter of great debate. We investigated the effect of magnetic (Mn) and nonmagnetic (Ga) doping at the Cr site of the layered GF antiferromagnetic compound LiCrO2. 10% Ga doping at the Cr site does not invoke any metastability typical of a glassy magnetic state. However, similar amount of Mn doping certainly drives the system to a spin glass state which is particularly evident from the relaxation, magnetic memory and heat capacity studies. The onset of glassy state in 10% Mn doped sample is of reentrant typ…
In the iron--chromium system, Fe$_{x}$Cr$_{1-x}$, a wide dome of spin-glass behavior emerges when the ferromagnetism of iron is suppressed and the antiferromagnetism of chromium emerges as a function of increasing iron content $x$. As both, the high-temperature state and the characteristic cluster size vary as a function of $x$, different regimes of spin-glass behavior may be compared in a single, isostructural material system. Here, we report a study of the spin dynamics across the freezing process into the spin-glass state for different iron concentrations ($x = 0.145$, $0.175$, $0.21$) usin…
A sigma-phase Fe65.9V34.1 alloy was investigated with the AC magnetic susceptibility as a function of temperature, frequency and external magnetic field. An evidence was found that its magnetism shows features characteristic of a reentrant behavior viz. two transitions: first at TC ca.312K from the paramagnetic state into the collinear ferromagnetic one, and second at Tf ca.302K to a mixed state (sometimes termed as a ferromagnetic re-entrant spin glass) which, finally, at a lower temperature (TRSG ca.60K) transforms to a state where replica symmetry is broken. The frequency dependence of Tf i…
We report $^{51}$V zero-field NMR of manganese vanadate spinel of MnV$_2$O$_4$, together with both ac and dc magnetization measurements. The field and temperature dependence of ac susceptibilities show a reentrant-spin-glass-like behavior below the ferrimagnetic(FEM) ordering temperature. The zero-field NMR spectrum consists of multiple lines ranging from 240 MHz to 320 MHz. Its temperature dependence reveals that the ground state is given by the simultaneous formation of a long-range FEM order and a short-range order component. We attribute the spin-glass-like anomalies to freezing and fluctu…

We report a comprehensive investigation of the structural, magnetic, transport and thermodynamic properties of a single crystal PrAlSi, in comparison to its nonmagnetic analogue LaAlSi. PrAlSi exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at $T_C$ = 17.8 K which, however, is followed by two weak phase transitions at lower temperatures. Based on the combined dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, we propose the two reentrant magnetic phases below $T_C$ to be spin glasses or ferromagnetic cluster glasses. When the magnetic glassy states are suppressed by small field, several remarkable features a…
A systematic study of thermomagnetic irreversibility CoS$_{1.76}$Se$_{0.24}$ has been carried out. Our study shows that the resistivity at low temperature can be tuned by cooling in different magnetic fields and the critical field required for paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition varies non-monotonically with temperature. The field induced PM to FM transition results in giant positive magnetoresistance (MR) of about 160\% at 5 K. Measurements under CHUF (cooling and heating in unequal magnetic field) protocol show reentrant transition on warming under higher magnetic field (than …
We have studied the dynamic and static critical behavior of spin glass transition in insulating La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CoO$_3$ single crystal by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements in the vicinity of its freezing temperature ($T_f$). The dynamic scaling analysis of the frequency dependence of ac susceptibility data yields the characteristic time constant $τ_{0}$=1.6(9)$\times10^{-12}$ s, the dynamic critical exponent $zν$=9.5(2), and a frequency dependence factor $K$=$Δ$$T_{f}/T_{f}$($Δ$$log$$f$)=0.017, indicating that the sample enters into a canonical spin-glass phase below $T_{…
Metal thio(seleno)phosphates MPX$_3$ have attracted considerable attentions with wide spanned band gaps and rich magnetic properties. In this series, two neighboring members MnPS$_3$ and NiPS$_3$ differ in magnetic atoms, magnetic easy axes, spin anisotropy, as well as nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions. The competition between these components may cause intriguing physical phenomena. In this article, the evolution of magnetism of Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$PS$_3$ series is reported. Despite the incompatible antiferromagnetic orders of two end members, the antiferromagnetism persists as the ground st…
A systematic study using neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility are reported on Mn substituted ferrimagnetic inverse spinel Ti$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Co$_2$O$_4$ in the temperature interval 1.6 K $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ 300 K. Our neutron diffraction study reveals cooperative distortions of the $T$O$_6$ octahedral for all the Jahn-Teller active ions $T$ = Mn$^{3+}$, Ti$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$, which are confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Two specific compositions ($x$ = 0.2 and 0.4) have been chosen because of their unique features: noncollinear Yafet-Kittel type ordering, and weak tet…
