Majorana zero modes are the hallmark of topological superconductivity. In one-dimensional systems, these zero modes are usually introduced in the context of gapped, mean-field models that do not conserve particle number, such as the Kitaev chain. By non-locally encoding a conventional fermion across spatially separated Majorana zero modes, these systems become inherently immune to local decoherence. In this work, we show that signatures of Majorana edge physics persist in a number-conserving, gapless Luttinger liquid of spinless fermions with short-range attractive interactions. We identify the two-point correlator as a sharp diagnostic, revealing an edge-to-edge revival whose sign depends on the fermion-number parity. This revival is robust in the thermodynamic limit, and persists in the excited states of the system and at different fillings. A simple particle-hole ansatz for the ground state of the system with an odd number of fermions captures the physics of the system for a wide range of interaction strengths, interpolating between the free-fermion limit and the strongly interacting Majorana regime. Finally, we propose a concrete protocol to realize this model with ultracold dipolar molecules or atoms in an optical lattice, and to detect the revival via beam-splitter interferometry, opening an experimental route to Majorana physics beyond the conventional gapped-superconductor paradigm.
Spin-triplet p-wave superfluids of single-species (or spin-polarized) fermionic atoms is a topological superfluid. In 2D such a superfluid supports zero-energy topological Majorana fermion excitations in order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. In 3D these superfluids support topologically protected Dirac points in the bulk spectrum and flat surface Majorana arcs. Despite the promise, creating a spin-triplet p-wave single-species fermionic superfluid either from direct p-wave Feshbach resonance or indirectly from the recently proposed artificial spin-orbit and Zeeman coupling…
A simple set of algebraic equations is derived for the exact low-temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional multi-component strongly attractive fermionic atoms with enlarged SU(N) spin symmetry and Zeeman splitting. Universal multi-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phases are thus determined. For linear Zeeman splitting, the physics of the gapless phase at low temperatures belongs to the universality class of a two-component asymmetric TLL corresponding to spin-neutral N-atom composites and spin-(N-1)/2 single atoms. The equation of states is also obtained to open up the study of mu…

Ultracold three-component atomic Fermi gases in one dimension are expected to exhibit rich physics due to the presence of trions and different pairing states. Quantum phase transitions from the trion state into a paired phase and a normal Fermi liquid occur at zero temperature. We derive the analytical thermodynamics of strongly attractive three-component one-dimensional fermions with SU(3) symmetry via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method in unequal Zeeman splitting fields $H_1$ and $H_2$. We find explicitly that for low temperature the system acts like either a two-component or a three-comp…
We investigate the physics of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of spin-polarized fermions superimposed on an ion chain. This compound system features (attractive) long-range interspecies interactions. By means of density matrix renormalization group techniques we compute the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter and speed of sound as a function of the relative atom/ion density and the two quantum defect parameters, namely, the even and odd short-range phases which characterize the short-range part of the atom-ion polarization potential. The presence of ions is found to allow critical tuning of the at…
We investigate one dimensional attractive Fermi gases in spin-dependent optical lattices. We show that three-body bound states - "trimers" - exist as soon as the two tunneling rates are different. We calculate the binding energy and the effective mass of a single trimer. We then show numerically that for finite and commensurate densities $n_\uparrow=n_\downarrow/2$ an energy gap appears, implying that the gas is a one-component Luttinger liquid of trimers with suppressed superfluid ordering. The boundaries of this novel phase are given. We discuss experimental situations to test our prediction…
A translation invariant one-dimensional system of spinless fermions with a finite-range attraction experiences a quantum phase transition to a phase-separated state. While being a conventional Luttinger liquid for a small interaction strength, spinless fermions form a droplet with the size smaller than the available one-dimensional volume when the interaction strength exceeds some critical value. A particularly remarkable signature of the droplet formation is the change in the lower edge of the many-body excitation spectrum. In the homogeneous phase, it has a Luttinger-liquid shape of periodic…
One-dimensional spinless Fermi gas with attractive dipole-dipole interaction is investigated. Results obtained show when the interaction is weak, the excitation spectrum is linear and the superconducting correlation function decays as power law, indicating the validity of the Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid picture. However, when the interaction reaches a critical value, the excitation spectrum is nonlinear and the superconducting correlation function keeps finite for infinity separation, indicating real long-range order established and the breakdown of the TL liquid picture. We prove that the …
We show that a one dimensional ultra-cold Fermi gas with Rashba-like spin orbit coupling, a Zeeman field and intrinsic attractive interactions exhibits a novel topological superfluid state, which forms in spite of total number conservation and the absence of a single particle gap. Majorana zero modes are localized to the interface between a topological region in the middle of the trap and trivial regions at its wings. Unlike the realization of a topological superconductor in proximity coupled nano-wires, the Majorana modes do not carry a quantum number associated with the total fermion parity.…
We study the real time evolution of the correlation functions in a globally quenched interacting one dimensional lattice system by means of time adaptive density matrix renormalization group. We find a clear light-cone behavior quenching the repulsive interaction from the gapped density wave regime. The spreading velocity increases with the final values of the interaction and then saturates at a certain finite value. In the case of a Luttinger liquid phase as the initial state, for strong repulsive interaction quenches, a more complex dynamics occurs as a result of bound state formations. From…
We revisit the low energy physics of one dimensional spinless fermion liquids, showing that with sufficiently strong interactions the conventional Luttinger liquid can give way to a strong pairing phase. While the density fluctuations in both phases are described by a gapless Luttinger liquid, single fermion excitations are gapped only in the strong pairing phase. Smooth spatial Interfaces between the two phases lead to topological degeneracies in the ground state and low energy phonon spectrum. Using a concrete microscopic model, with both single particle and pair hopping, we show that the st…
We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases at special imbalanced commensurabilities which lead to the formation of multimer (multi-particle bound-states) as the dominant order parameter. Luttinger liquid theory supports a mode-locking mechanism in which mass (or velocity) asymmetry is identified as the key ingredient to stabilize such states. While the scenario is valid both in the continuum and on a lattice, the effects of umklapp terms relevant for densities commensurate with the lattice spacing are also mentioned. These ideas are illustrated and confronted with the physics of t…
We describe a novel topological superfluid state, which forms in a one-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling, a Zeeman field and intrinsic attractive interactions. In spite of total number conservation and the presence of gapless excitations, Majorana-like zero modes appear in this system and can be linked with interfaces between two distinct phases that naturally form at different regions of the harmonic trap. As a result, the low lying collective excitations of the system, including the dipole oscillations and the long-wavelength phonons, are doubly degenerate. While bac…
Recently it has been shown that multicomponent spin-orbit-coupled fermions in one-dimensional optical lattices can be viewed as spinless fermions moving in two-dimensional synthetic lattices with synthetic magnetic flux. The quantum Hall edge states in these systems have been observed in recent experiments. In this paper we study the effect of an attractive Hubbard interaction. Since the Hubbard interaction is long-range in the synthetic dimension, it is able to efficiently induce Cooper pairing between the counterpropagating chiral edge states. The topological class of the resultant one-dimen…
We investigate the topological properties of spin polarized fermionic polar molecules loaded in a multi-layer structure with the electric dipole moment polarized to the normal direction. When polar molecules are paired by attractive inter-layer interaction, unpaired Majorana fermions can be macroscopically generated in the top and bottom layers in dilute density regime. We show that the resulting topological state is effectively composed by a bundle of 1D Kitaev ladders labeled by in-plane momenta k and -k, and hence belongs to BDI class characterized by the winding number Z, protected by the …
We calculate the nonequilibrium dynamic evolution of a one-dimensional system of two-component fermionic atoms after a strong local quench by using a time-dependent spin-density-functional theory. The interaction quench is also considered to see its influence on the spin-charge separation. It is shown that the charge velocity is larger than the spin velocity for the system of on-site repulsive interaction (Luttinger liquid), and vise versa for the system of on-site attractive interaction (Luther-Emery liquid). We find that both the interaction quench and polarization suppress the spin-charge s…
Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids, Cooper pairings with finite momentum, and Majorana fermions (MFs), quasiparticles with non-Abelian exchange statistics, are two topics under intensive investigation in the past several decades, but unambiguous experimental evidences for them have not been found yet in any physical system. Here we show that the recent experimentally realized cold atom shaken optical lattice provides a new pathway to realize FFLO superfluids and MFs. By tuning shaken lattice parameters (shaking frequency and amplitude), various coupling between the s- and p-or…
Recent experimental advances in the field of cold atoms led to the development of novel techniques for producing synthetic dimensions and synthetic magnetic fields, thus greatly expanding the utility of cold atomic systems for exploring exotic states of matter. In this paper we investigate the possibility of using experimentally tunable interactions in such systems to mimic the physics of Majorana chains, currently a subject of intense research. Crucially to our proposal, the interactions, which are local in space, appear non-local in the synthetic dimension. We use this fact to induce couplin…
Topological phases like topological insulators or superconductors are fascinating quantum states of matter, featuring novel properties such as emergent chiral edge states or Majorana fermions with non-Abelian braiding statistics. The recent experimental implementation of optical lattices with highly tunable geometry in cold gases opens up a new thrust on exploring these novel quantum states. Here we report that the topological non-trivial Bloch bands can arise naturally in a noncentrosymmetric lattice. It induces a controllable orbital hybridization, producing the topological band structure. I…
We study the quantum phases of mixtures of ultra-cold bosonic atoms held in an optical lattice that confines motion or hopping to one spatial dimension. The phases are found by using Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory as well as the numerical method of time evolving block decimation (TEBD). We consider a binary mixture with repulsive intra-species interactions, and either repulsive or attractive inter-species interaction. For a homogeneous system, we find paired- and counterflow-superfluid phases at different filling and hopping energies. We also predict parameter regions in which these types of…
