One-dimensional spinless Fermi gas with attractive dipole-dipole interaction is investigated. Results obtained show when the interaction is weak, the excitation spectrum is linear and the superconducting correlation function decays as power law, indicating the validity of the Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid picture. However, when the interaction reaches a critical value, the excitation spectrum is nonlinear and the superconducting correlation function keeps finite for infinity separation, indicating real long-range order established and the breakdown of the TL liquid picture. We prove that the existence of long-range order is not in contradiction with the Hohenberg theorem and show that this system is related to the Kitaev toy model, therefore, it has potential applications for the future topological quantum computation.
We investigate a spinless Fermi gas trapped in a honeycomb optical lattice with attractive nearest-neighbor interactions. At zero temperature, mean-field theory predicts three quantum phase transitions, two being topological. At low interactions, the system is semi-metallic. Increasing the interaction further, the semi-metal destabilizes into a fully gapped superfluid. At larger interactions, a topological transition occurs and this superfluid phase becomes gapless, with Dirac-like dispersion relations. Finally, increasing again the interaction, a second topological transition occurs and the g…
We present a rigorous study of momentum distribution and p-wave contacts of one dimensional (1D) spinless Fermi gases with an attractive p-wave interaction. Using the Bethe wave function, we analytically calculate the large-momentum tail of momentum distribution of the model. We show that the leading ($\sim 1/p^{2}$) and sub-leading terms ($\sim 1/p^{4}$) of the large-momentum tail are determined by two contacts $C_2$ and $C_4$, which we show, by explicit calculation, are related to the short-distance behaviour of the two-body correlation function and its derivatives. We show as one increases …
A translation invariant one-dimensional system of spinless fermions with a finite-range attraction experiences a quantum phase transition to a phase-separated state. While being a conventional Luttinger liquid for a small interaction strength, spinless fermions form a droplet with the size smaller than the available one-dimensional volume when the interaction strength exceeds some critical value. A particularly remarkable signature of the droplet formation is the change in the lower edge of the many-body excitation spectrum. In the homogeneous phase, it has a Luttinger-liquid shape of periodic…
In a recent letter [D. Poletti et al., EPL 93, 37008 (2011)] a model of attractive spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice at half filling has been studied by mean-field theory, where distinct homogenous phases at rather large attraction strength $V>3.36$, separated by (topological) phase transitions, have been predicted. In this comment we argue that without additional interactions the ground states in these phases are not stable against phase separation. We determine the onset of phase separation at half filling $V_{ps}\approx 1.7$ by means of infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPE…
We study the effective Bloch-wave scattering of a spinless Fermi gas in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices. By tuning the odd-wave scattering length, we find multiple resonances of Bloch-waves scattering at the bottom (and the top) of the lowest band, beyond which an attractive (and a repulsive) two-body bound state starts to emerge. These resonances exhibit comparable widths in the deep lattice limit, and the finite interaction range plays an essential role in determining their locations. Based on the exact two-body solutions, we construct an effective microscopic model for the low-energy …
A model of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dipolar atoms, confined in a combination of a cigar-shaped trap and optical lattice acting in the axial direction, is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional (1D) nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) with additional terms describing long-range dipole-dipole (DD) interactions. The NPSE makes it possible to describe the collapse of localized modes, which was experimentally observed in the self-attractive BEC confined in tight traps, in the framework of the 1D description. We study the influence of the DD interactions on the dynamics o…
The interaction between aligned dipoles is long-ranged and highly anisotropic: it changes from repulsive to attractive depending on the relative positions of the dipoles. We report on the observation of the attractive component of the dipolar coupling between excitonic dipoles in stacked semiconductor bilayers. We show that the presence of a dipolar exciton fluid in one bilayer modifies the spatial distribution and increases the binding energy of excitonic dipoles in a vertically remote layer. The binding energy changes are explained by a many-body polaron model describing the deformation of t…
We theoretically investigate in-medium two- and three-body correlations in one-dimensional spinless fermions with attractive two-body p-wave interaction. By investigating the variational problem of two- and three-body states above the Fermi sea, we elucidate the fate of the in-medium two- and three-body cluster states. The one-dimensional system with the strong p-wave interaction is found to be stable against the formation of three-body clusters even in the presence of the Fermi sea, in contrast to higher-dimensional systems that suffer the strong three-body loss associated with the trimer for…
For indistinguishable itinerant particles subject to a superselection rule fixing their total number, a portion of the entanglement entropy under a spatial bipartition of the ground state is due to particle fluctuations between subsystems and thus is inaccessible as a resource for quantum information processing. We quantify the remaining operationally accessible entanglement in a model of interacting spinless fermions on a one dimensional lattice via exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group. We find that the accessible entanglement exactly vanishes at the first order …
We investigate by numerical simulations the pattern formation after an oscillating attractive-repulsive obstacle inserted into the flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. For slow oscillations we observe a complex emission of vortex dipoles. For moderate oscillations organized lined up vortex dipoles are emitted. For high frequencies no dipoles are observed but only lined up dark fragments. The results shows that the drag force turns negative for sufficiently high frequency. We also successfully model the {\it ship waves} in front of the obstacle. In the limit of very fast oscillations all the exc…
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. In particular, for $a_{F}=a_{0}$ one observes the thermodynamic equivalence of the attractive …
We investigate a system of two- and three-body constrained dipolar bosons in a pair of one-dimensional optical lattices coupled to each other by the non-local dipole-dipole interactions. Assuming attractive dipole-dipole interactions, we obtain the ground state phase diagram of the system by employing the cluster mean-field theory. The competition between the repulsive on-site and attractive nearest-neighbor interactions between the chains yields three kinds of superfluids; namely the trimer superfluid, pair superfluid and the usual single particle superfluid along with the insulating Mott pha…
The variational theorem for the scattering length in the presence of the dipole-dipole interaction is developed. The theorem is applied to the spinless dipolar Bose gas in three dimensions. We calculated analytically the long-range tails of the single-particle momentum distribution and static structure factor, and the pair distribution function at short distances. The momentum distribution is inversely proportional to $q^4$ with the anisotropic prefactor. In the absence of the dipole-dipole interaction, Tan's adiabatic sweep theorem is reproduced as a particular case. For the homogeneous dilut…
We study a two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive contact interactions by both the variational method and the imaginary time evolution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The dipoles are completely polarized along one direction in the 2D plane so as to provide an effective attractive dipole-dipole interaction. We find two types of solitons as the ground states arising from such attractive interactions: a plane wave soliton with a spatially varying phase and a stripe soliton with a spatially oscillating density for each component. Both types of solitons…
We discuss scattering between a bright soliton and a soliton dimer in coupled quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. The dimer is formed by each soliton from both tubes due to the attractive inter-layer dipole-dipole interaction. The dipoles within each tube repel each other, and a stable, bright soliton is stabilized via attractive contact interactions. In general, the scattering is inelastic, transferring the kinetic energy into internal modes of both soliton dimer and single soliton. Our studies reveal rich scattering scenarios, including dimer-soliton repulsion at small i…
We investigate an attractive force caused by light induced dipole-dipole interactions in freely expanding ultracold 87Rb atoms. This collective, light-triggered effect results in a self-confining potential with interesting features: it exhibits nonlocal properties, is attractive for both red and blue-detuned light fields and induces a remarkably strong force that depends on the gradient of the atomic density. The experimental data are discussed in the framework of a theoretical model based on a local-field approach for the light scattered by the atomic cloud.
In this letter we consider dipolar quantum gases in a quasi-one-dimensional tube with dipole moment perpendicular to the tube direction. We deduce the effective one-dimensional interaction potential and show that this potential is not purely repulsive, but rather has an attractive part due to high-order scattering processes through transverse excited states. The attractive part can induce bound state and cause scattering resonances. This represents the dipole induced resonance in low-dimension. We work out an unconventional behavior of low-energy phase shift for this effective potential and sh…
The ground state of a one-dimensional (1D) quantum gas of dipoles oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, with a strong 1/x^3 repulsive potential, is studied at low 1D densities $n$. Near contact the dependence of the many-body wave function on the separation x_{jl} of two particles reduces to a two-body wave function Ψ_{rel}(x_{jl}). Immediately after a sudden rotation of the dipoles so that they are parallel to the longitudinal axis, this wave function will still be that of the repulsive potential, but since the potential is now that of the attractive potential, it will not be stati…
By numerical simulation and variational analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the localization, with an exponential tail, of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) of $^{52}$Cr atoms in a three-dimensional bichromatic optical-lattice (OL) generated by two monochromatic OL of incommensurate wavelengths along three orthogonal directions. For a fixed dipole-dipole interaction, a localized state of a small number of atoms ($\sim 1000$) could be obtained when the short-range interaction is not too attractive or not too repulsive. A phase diagram showing the region of stability of a …
We investigate the phase diagram of spinless fermions with nearest and next-nearest neighbour density-density interactions on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling. Using Exact Diagonalization techniques of the full Hamiltonian and constrained subspaces, combined with a careful choice of finite-size clusters, we determine the different charge orderings that occur for large interactions. In this regime we find a two-sublattice Néel-like state, a charge modulated state with a tripling of the unit cell, a zig-zag phase and a novel charge ordered states with a 12 site unit cells we call Néel domai…
Pairing between spinless fermions can generate Majorana fermion excitations that exhibit intriguing properties arising from non-local correlations. But simple models indicate that non-local correlation between Majorana fermions becomes unstable at non-zero temperatures. We address this issue by showing that anisotropic interactions between dipolar fermions in optical lattices can be used to significantly enhance thermal stability. We construct a model of oriented dipolar fermions in a square optical lattice. We find that domains established by strong interactions exhibit enhanced correlation b…
We study a system of ultra-cold fermionic polar molecules in a two-dimensional square lattice interacting via both the long-ranged dipole-dipole interaction and a short-ranged on-site attractive interaction. Singlet superfluid, charge density wave, and supersolid phases are found to exist in the system. We map out the zero temperature phase diagram and find that the supersolid phase is considerably stabilized by the dipole-dipole interaction and thus can exist over a large region of filling factors. We study the melting of the supersolid phase with increasing temperature, map out a finite temp…
We investigate a free one-dimensional spinless Fermi gas, and the Tonks-Girardeau gas interacting with a single impurity particle of equal mass. We obtain a Fredholm determinant representation for the time-dependent correlation function of the impurity particle. This representation is valid for an arbitrary temperature and an arbitrary repulsive or attractive impurity-gas $δ$-function interaction potential. It includes, as particular cases, the representations obtained for zero temperature and arbitrary repulsion in [Nucl. Phys. B 892, 83 (2015)], and for arbitrary temperature and infinite rep…
We probe the collective dynamics of a quantum degenerate Bose-Bose mixture of Cs and $^{174}$Yb with attractive interspecies interactions. Specifically, we excite vertical center of mass oscillations of the Cs condensate, and observe significant damping for the Cs dipole mode, due to the rapid transfer of energy to the larger Yb component, and the ensuing acoustic dissipation. Numerical simulations based on coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations provide excellent agreement, and additionally reveal the possibility of late-time revivals (beating) which are found to be highly sensitive to the Cs and …
An ion and a polar molecule interact by an anisotropic ion-dipole potential scaling as $- α\cos (θ)/r^2$ at large distances. Due to its long-range character, it modifies the properties of angular wave functions, which are no longer given by spherical harmonics. In addition, an effective centrifugal potential in the radial equation can become attractive for low angular momenta. In this paper, we develop a general framework for an ion-dipole reactive scattering, focusing on the regime of large $α$. We introduce modified spherical harmonics as solutions of the angular part of the Schrödinger equa…
We show that dipolar bosons and fermions confined in a quasi-one-dimensional ring trap exhibit a rich variety of states because their interaction is inhomogeneous. For purely repulsive interactions, with increasing strength of the dipolar coupling there is a crossover from a gas-like state to an inhomogeneous crystal-like one. For small enough angles between the dipoles and the plane of the ring, there are regions with attractive interactions, and clustered states can form.
We compute the ground state of dipoles in a quasi-one-dimensional ring trap using few-body techniques combined with analytic arguments. The effective interaction between two dipoles depends on their center-of-mass coordinate and can be tuned by varying the angle between dipoles and the plane of the ring. For weak enough interactions, the state resembles a weakly interacting Fermi gas or an (inhomogeneous) Lieb-Liniger gas. A mapping between the Lieb-Liniger and the dipolar-gas parameters in and beyond the Born approximation is established, and we discuss the effect of inhomogeneities based on …
We consider inter-atomic forces due to resonant dipole-dipole interactions within a dimer of highly excited Rydberg atoms, embedded in an ultra-cold gas. These forces rely on a coherent superposition of two-atom electronic states, which is destroyed by continuous monitoring of the dimer state through a detection scheme utilizing controllable interactions with the background gas atoms. We show that this intrinsic decoherence of the molecular energy surface can gradually deteriorate a repulsive dimer state, causing a mixing of attractive and repulsive character. For sufficiently strong decoheren…
We investigate the behavior of identical dipolar fermions with aligned dipole moments in two-dimensional multilayers at zero temperature. We consider density instabilities that are driven by the attractive part of the dipolar interaction and, for the case of bilayers, we elucidate the properties of the stripe phase recently predicted to exist in this interaction regime. When the number of layers is increased, we find that this "attractive" stripe phase exists for an increasingly larger range of dipole angles, and if the interlayer distance is sufficiently small, the stripe phase eventually spa…

We consider a gas of two species of fermions with population imbalance. Using the renormalization group in $d=1+ε$ dimensions, we show that for spinless fermions and $ε> 0$ a fixed point appears at finite attractive coupling where the quasiparticle residue vanishes, and identify this with the transition to Larkin--Ovchinnikov--Fulde--Ferrell order (inhomogeneous superconductivity). When the two species of fermions also carry spin degrees of freedom we find a fixed point indicating a transition to spin density wave order.
Experiments on quantum degenerate Fermi gases of magnetic atoms and dipolar molecules begin to probe their broken symmetry phases dominated by the long-range, anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. Several candidate phases including the p-wave superfluid, the stripe density wave, and a supersolid have been proposed theoretically for two-dimensional spinless dipolar Fermi gases. Yet the phase boundaries predicted by different approximations vary greatly, and a definitive phase diagram is still lacking. Here we present a theory that treats all competing many-body instabilities in the particle-pa…
Fermion systems with flat bands can boost superconductivity by enhancing the density of states at the Fermi level. We use quasiexact numerical methods to show that repulsive interactions between spinless fermions in a one-dimensional (1D) flat-band system, the Creutz ladder, give a finite pairing energy that increases with repulsion, though charge quasi-order (QO) remains dominant. Adding an attractive component shifts the balance in favor of superconductivity and the interplay of two flat bands further yields a remarkable enhancement of superconductivity, well outside of known paradigms for 1…
We are pointing out relevant anisotropic effects, related to spatial separation, miscibility and mass-symmetry, due to dipole-dipole interactions in rotating binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, by considering symmetric ($^{164}$Dy-$^{162}$Dy) and asymmetric ($^{168}$Er-$^{164}$Dy, $^{164}$Dy-$^{87}$Rb) dipolar mixtures. The binary mixtures are kept in strong pancake-shaped trap, modeled by an effective two-dimensional coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The anisotropy of the dipolar interactions, on miscibility and vortex-lattice structures, is studied by tuning the polarization angle of …
We describe a novel topological superfluid state, which forms in a one-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling, a Zeeman field and intrinsic attractive interactions. In spite of total number conservation and the presence of gapless excitations, Majorana-like zero modes appear in this system and can be linked with interfaces between two distinct phases that naturally form at different regions of the harmonic trap. As a result, the low lying collective excitations of the system, including the dipole oscillations and the long-wavelength phonons, are doubly degenerate. While bac…
Systems of strongly interacting dipoles offer an attractive platform to study many-body localized phases, owing to their long coherence times and strong interactions. We explore conditions under which such localized phases persist in the presence of power-law interactions and supplement our analytic treatment with numerical evidence of localized states in one dimension. We propose and analyze several experimental systems that can be used to observe and probe such states, including ultracold polar molecules and solid-state magnetic spin impurities.
We study a quasi-two dimensional gas of bosonic dipoles, calculating the beyond mean field corrections to the ground state energy and chemical potential neglecting the transverse mode structure. We show that the corrections are sensitive to the high momentum part of the interaction and cannot be expressed solely in terms of the scattering length and the dipole strength. While nonuniversal, the correction is found to be negative, which provides an additional attractive term in the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, enhancing the roton instability.

There has been growing interest in investigating properties of elementary particles predicted by the standard model. Examples of such studies include exploring their low-energy analogs in condensed matter system, where they arise as collective states or quasiparticles. Here we show that a toolbox for systematically engineering the emergent elementary fermions, i.e., Dirac, Weyl and Majorana fermions, can be built in a single atomic system composed of a spinless magnetic dipolar Fermi gas in a 3D optical lattice. The designed direction-dependent dipole-dipole interaction leads to both the basic…
The system with externally polarized dipole molecules at half-filling moving along a one-dimensional zig-zag chain is studied theoretically, including the ground-state phase diagram. The dipoles are oriented in-plane. Together with the geometry of the chain this gives rise to a bond-alternating nearest neighbor interaction due to simultaneous attractive and repulsive interactions. Because of the quantum Zeno effect due to the reactive nature of molecules the system can be treated as hard-core. By tuning the ratio between the nearest-neighbor interaction and hopping, various phases can be acces…
We study the existence of energy minimizers for a Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interactions, tightly confined to a plane. The problem is critical in that the kinetic energy and the (partially attractive) interaction energy behave the same under mass-preserving scalings of the wave-function. We obtain a sharp criterion for the existence of ground states, involving the optimal constant of a certain generalized Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality.
The effect of dipolar orientation with respect to the condensate plane on the mean-field dynamics of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in a pancake-shaped confinement is discussed. The stability of a quasi-two-dimensional condensate, with respect to the tilting angle, is found to be different from a two-dimensional layer of dipoles, indicating the relevance of the transverse extension while characterizing two-dimensional dipolar systems. An anisotropic excitation spectrum exhibiting a highly tunable, rotonlike minimum can arise entirely from the dipole-dipole interactions, by tilting the dipol…
We model a system of ultracold fermionic dipolar molecules on a two-dimensional square lattice. Assuming that the molecules are in their nondegenerate hyperfine ground state, and that the dipole moment is polarized perpendicular to the plane (as in the recent experiments on 40K-87Rb molecules), we approximate these molecules as spinless fermions with long range repulsive dipolar interactions. We use mean field theory to obtain the restricted phase diagram as a function of the filling, the strength of interaction and the temperature. We find a number of ordered density wave phases in the system…
