设$a,b$和$n$为正整数,$S=\{x_1, \cdots, x_n\}$为$n$个不同正整数的集合。对于$x\in S$,定义$G_{S}(x)=\{d\in S: d<x, d|x \ {\rm and} \ (d|y|x, y\in S)\Rightarrow y\in \{d,x\}\}$。我们用$(S^a)$(分别地,$[S^a]$)表示$n\times n$矩阵,其$(i,j)$-元为$x_i$和$x_j$的最大公因数(分别地,最小公倍数)的$a$次幂。1995年,Bourque和Ligh证明了当$S$是FC时,在整数环上$n\times n$矩阵环$M_n(\mathbb Z)$中,$a$次幂GCD矩阵$(S^a)$整除$a$次幂LCM矩阵$[S^a]$。2002年,Hong证明了当$S$是gcd封闭时,这种分解不再成立。2008年(分别地,2026年),Hong证明了若$a\mid b$且$S$是除数链(分别地,FC集),则$[S^a]\mid [S^b]$。本文中,我们证明对于任意满足$a|b$的正整数$a$和$b$,若$S$是gcd-封闭集(即对所有满足$1\le i, j\le n$的整数$i$和$j$,有$\gcd(x_i, x_j)\in S$),且满足条件$\mathcal G$(即对任意$x\in S$,要么$G_S(x)$至多包含一个元素,要么$G_S(x)$至少包含两个元素且对任意$\{y_1,y_2\}\subseteq G_S(x)$有$[y_1,y_2]=x$和$(y_1,y_2)\in G_S(y_1)\cap G_S(y_2)$),则$b$次幂矩阵$[S^b]$可被$a$次幂矩阵$[S^a]$整除。这证实了Hong在[S.F. Hong, Divisibility among power GCD matrices and power LCM matrices, {\it Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.} {\bf 113} (2026), 231-243]中提出的猜想。
英文摘要:
Let $a,b$, and $n$ be positive integers and let $S=\{x_1, \cdots, x_n\}$ be a set of $n$ distinct positive integers. We denote by $[S^a]$ the $n\times n$ matrix having the $a$th power of the least common multiple of $x_i$ and $x_j$ as its $(i,j)$-entry. For $x\in S$, let $G_{S}(x)=\{d\in S: d<x, d|x \ {\rm and} \ (d|y|x, y\in S)\Rightarrow y\in \{d,x\}\}$. In this article, we show that $[S^a]$ divides $[S^b]$ in the ring of $n\times n$ matrices over the integers if $a|b$ and $S$ is gcd closed (i.e., $\gcd(x_i,x_j)\in S$ for all integers $i$ and $j$ with $1\le i,j\le n$) and satisfies the condition $\mathcal G$ (that is, for any $x\in S$, either $G_S(x)$ contains at most one element, or $G_S(x)$ contains at least two elements and satisfies that ${\rm lcm}(y_1,y_2)=x$ and $\gcd(y_1,y_2)\in G_S(y_1)\cap G_S(y_2)$ for any $\{y_1,y_2\}\subseteq G_S(x)$). This confirms a conjecture of Hong proposed in (2026, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc., 113, 231-243).
In this paper, we consider the divisibility problem of LCM matrices by GCD matrices in the ring $M_n(\mathbb{Z})$ proposed by Hong in 2002 and in particular a conjecture concerning the divisibility problem raised by Zhao in 2014. We present some certain gcd-closed sets on which the LCM matrix is not divisible by the GCD matrix in the ring $M_n(\mathbb{Z})$. This could be the first theoretical evidence that Zhao's conjecture might be true. Furthermore, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions on the gcd-closed set $S$ with $|S|\leq 8$ such that the GCD matrix divides the LCM matrix in th…
In this paper, we study the eigenvalues of the GCD matrix $(S_n)$ and the LCM matrix $[S_n]$ defined on $S_n=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We present upper and lower bounds for the smallest and the largest eigenvalues of $(S_n)$ and $[S_n]$ in terms of particular arithmetical functions.
We study the distribution of the generalized gcd and lcm functions on average. The generalized gcd function, denoted by $(m,n)_b$, is the largest $b$-th power divisor common to $m$ and $n$. Likewise, the generalized lcm function, denoted by $[m,n]_b$, is the smallest $b$-th power multiple common to $m$ and $n$. We derive asymptotic formulas for the average order of the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic means of $(m,n)_b$. Additionally, we also deduce asymptotic formulas with error terms for the means of $(n_1,n_2,\cdots, n_k)_b$, and $[n_1,n_2,\cdots, n_k]_b$ over a set of lattice points, th…
Let $S=\{x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n\}$ be a set of distinct positive integers, and let $f$ be an arithmetical function. The GCD matrix $(S)_f$ on $S$ associated with $f$ is defined as the $n\times n$ matrix having $f$ evaluated at the greatest common divisor of $x_i$ and $x_j$ as its $ij$ entry. The LCM matrix $[S]_f$ is defined similarly. We consider inertia, positive definiteness and $\ell_p$ norm of GCD and LCM matrices and their unitary analogs. Proofs are based on matrix factorizations and convolutions of arithmetical functions.
We use elementary arguments to prove results on the order of magnitude of certain sums concerning the gcd's and lcm's of $k$ positive integers, where $k\ge 2$ is fixed. We refine and generalize an asymptotic formula of Bordellès (2007), and extend certain related results of Hilberdink and Tóth (2016). We also formulate some conjectures and open problems.
Let $R$ be a gcd-domain (for example let $R$ be a unique factorization domain), and let $(a_n)_{n\geqslant1}$ be a sequence of nonzero elements in $R$. We prove that $\gcd(a_n,a_m)=a_{\gcd(n,m)}$ for all $n,m\geqslant1$ if and only if $$a_n=\prod\limits_{d\mid n} c_d\quad\mbox{for} \ n\geqslant1, $$ where $c_1=a_1$ and $c_n=\mbox{lcm}(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_n)/\mbox{lcm}(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_{n-1})$ for $n\geqslant2$. All equalities with gcd and lcm are determined up to units of $R$.
We obtain asymptotic formulas with remainder terms for the hyperbolic summations $\sum_{mn\le x} f((m,n))$ and $\sum_{mn\le x} f([m,n])$, where $f$ belongs to certain classes of arithmetic functions, $(m,n)$ and $[m,n]$ denoting the gcd and lcm of the integers $m,n$. In particular, we investigate the functions $f(n)=τ(n), \log n, ω(n)$ and $Ω(n)$. We also define a common generalization of the latter three functions, and prove a corresponding result.
This paper is devoted to the study of statistical properties of the greatest common divisor and the least common multiple of random samples of positive integers.
For integers $x$ and $y$, $(x, y)$ and $[x, y]$ stand for the greatest common divisor and the least common multiple of $x$ and $y$ respectively. Denote by $|T|$ the number of elements of a finite set $T$. Let $a,b$ and $n$ be positive integers and let $S=\{x_1, \cdots, x_n\}$ be a set of $n$ distinct positive integers. We denote by $(S^a)$ (resp. $[S^a]$) the $n\times n$ matrix having the $a$th power of $(x_i,x_j)$ (resp. $[x_i,x_j]$) as its $(i,j)$-entry. For any $x\in S$, define $G_{S}(x):=\{d\in S: d<x, d|x \ {\rm and} \ (d|y|x, y\in S) \Rightarrow y\in \{d,x\}\}$. In this paper, we show th…
In this paper, we first prove that for any strong divisibility sequences $\boldsymbol{a} = \left(a_n\right)_{n\geq 1}$, we have the identity: $\mathrm{lcm} \left\lbrace \binom{n}{0}_{\bf{a}}, \binom{n}{1}_{\bf{a}},\dots, \binom{n}{n}_{\bf{a}} \right\rbrace = \frac{\mathrm{lcm} \left(a_1,\dots , a_n , a_{n+1}\right)}{a_{n+1}}$ $\left(\forall n \geq 1\right)$, generalizing the identity of Farhi (obtained in 2009 for $a_n=n$). Then, we derive from this one some other interesting identities. Finally, we apply those identities to estimate the least common multiple of the consecutive terms of some L…
Given two sets $A$ and $B$ of integers, we consider the problem of finding a set $S \subseteq A$ of the smallest possible cardinality such the greatest common divisor of the elements of $S \cup B$ equals that of those of $A \cup B$. The particular cases of $B = \emptyset$ and $\#B = 1$ are of special interest and have some links with graph theory. We also consider the corresponding question for the least common multiple of the elements. We establish NP-completeness and approximation results for these problems by relating them to the Minimum Cover Problem.
We obtain asymptotic formulas for the sums $\sum_{n_1,\ldots,n_k\le x} f((n_1,\ldots,n_k))$ and $ \sum_{n_1,\ldots,n_k\le x} f([n_1,\ldots,n_k])$ involving the gcd and lcm of the integers $n_1,\ldots,n_k$, where $f$ belongs to certain classes of additive arithmetic functions. In particular, we consider the generalized omega function $Ω_{\ell}(n)= \sum_{p^ν\mid\mid n} ν^{\ell}$ investigated by Duncan (1962) and Hassani (2018), and the functions $A(n)=\sum_{p^ν\mid\mid n} νp$, $A^*(n)= \sum_{p \mid n} p$, $B(n)=A(n)-A^*(n)$ studied by Alladi and Erdős (1977). As a key auxiliary result we use an …
We prove limit theorems for the greatest common divisor and the least common multiple of random integers. While the case of integers uniformly distributed on a hypercube with growing size is classical, we look at the uniform distribution on sublevel sets of multivariate symmetric polynomials, which we call hyperbolic regions. Along the way of deriving our main results, we obtain some asymptotic estimates for the number of integer points in these hyperbolic domains, when their size goes to infinity.
This thesis is devoted to studying estimates of the least common multiple of some integer sequences. Our study focuses on effective bounding of the $\mathrm{lcm}$ of some class of quadratic sequences, as well as arithmetic progressions and strong divisibility sequences. First, we have used methods of commutative algebra and complex analysis to establish new nontrivial lower bounds for the $\mathrm{lcm}$ of some quadratic sequences. Next, a more profound study of the arithmetic properties of strong divisibility sequences allowed us to obtain three interesting identities involving the $\mathrm{l…
Let E/k(T) be an elliptic curve defined over a rational function field of characteristic zero. Fix a Weierstrass equation for E. For points R in E(k(T)), write x_R=A_R/D_R^2 with relatively prime polynomials A_R(T) and D_R(T) in k[T]. The sequence {D_{nR}) for n \ge 1 is called the ``elliptic divisibility sequence of R.'' Let P,Q in E(k(T)) be independent points. We conjecture that deg (gcd(D_{nP},D_{mQ})) is bounded for m,n \ge 1, and that gcd(D_{nP},D_{nQ}) = gcd(D_{P},D_{Q}) for infinitely many n \ge 1. We prove these conjectures in the case that j(E) is in k. More generally, we prove analo…
In 1876 H. J. S. Smith defined an LCM matrix as follows: let S = {x_1, x_2, ..., x_n} be a set of positive integers. The LCM matrix [S] is the n $\times$ n matrix with lcm(x_i , x_j) as its ij entry. During the last 30 years singularity of LCM matrices has interested many authors. In 1992 Bourque and Ligh ended up conjecturing that if the GCD closedness of the set S (which means that gcd(x_i, x_j) $\in$ S for all i, j $\in$ {1, 2, . . . , n}), suffices to guarantee the invertibility of the matrix [S]. However, a few years later this conjecture was proven false first by Haukkanen et al. and the…
Let $\mathbf{D}=(D_{n})_{n\geq 1}$ be an elliptic divisibility sequence associated to the pair $(E,P)$. For a fixed integer $k$, we define $\mathscr{A}_{E,k}=\{n\geq 1 : \gcd(n,D_{n})=k\}$. We give an explicit structural description of $\mathscr{A}_{E,k}$. Also, we explain when $\mathscr{A}_{E,k}$ has positive asymptotic density using bounds related to the distribution of trace of Frobenius of $E$. Furthermore, we get explicit density of $\mathscr{A}_{E,k}$ using the Möbius function.
Let m_1,...,m_s be positive integers. Consider the sequence defined by multinomial coefficients: a_n=\binom{(m_1+m_2+... +m_s)n}{m_1 n, m_2 n,..., m_s n}. Fix a positive integer k\ge 2. We show that there exists a positive integer C(k) such that \frac{\prod_{n=1}^t a_{kn}}{\prod_{n=1}^t a_n} \in \frac 1{C(k)} \Z for all positive integer t, if and only if GCD(m_1,...,m_s)=1.
Let $S=\{x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n\}$ be a finite set of distinct positive integers. Throughout this article we assume that the set $S$ is GCD closed. The LCM matrix $[S]$ of the set $S$ is defined to be the $n\times n$ matrix with $\mathrm{lcm}(x_i,x_j)$ as its $ij$ element. The famous Bourque-Ligh conjecture used to state that the LCM matrix of a GCD closed set $S$ is always invertible, but currently it is a well-known fact that any nontrivial LCM matrix is indefinite and under the right circumstances it can be even singular (even if the set $S$ is assumed to be GCD closed). However, not much more …
Let $k \geq 1$ be a cube-free integer with $k \equiv 1 \pmod {9}$ and $\gcd(k, 7\cdot 571)=1$. In this paper, we prove the existence of infinitely many triples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+k^2})$ with $d \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that the class number of each of them is divisible by $3$. This affirmatively answers a weaker version of a conjecture of Iizuka \cite{iizuka-jnt}.
Let $F$ and $G$ be integer polynomials where $F$ has degree at least $2$. Define the sequence $(a_n)$ by $a_n=F(a_{n-1})$ for all $n\ge 1$ and $a_0=0.$ Let $\mathscr{B}_{F,\,G,\,k}$ be the set of all positive integers $n$ such that $k\mid \gcd(G(n),a_n)$ and if $p\mid \gcd(G(n),a_n)$ for some $p$, then $p\mid k.$ Let $\mathscr{A}_{F,\,G,\,k}$ be the subset of $\mathscr{B}_{F,\,G,\,k}$ such that $\mathscr{A}_{F,\,G,\,k}=\{n\ge 1 : \gcd(G(n),a_n)=k\}$. In this article, we prove that the asymptotic density of $\mathscr{A}_{F,\,G,\,k}$ and $\mathscr{B}_{F,\,G,\,k}$ exists for a class of $(F,G)$ an…
For given integers a,b, and j at least 1 we determine the set of integers n for which a^n-b^n is divisible by n^j. For j=1,2, this set is usually infinite; we find explicitly the exceptional cases for which a,b the set is finite. For j=2, we use Zsigmondy's Theorem for this. For j at least 3 and gcd(a,b)=1, the set is probably always finite; this seems difficult to prove, however. We also show that determination of the set of integers n for which a^n+b^n is divisible by n^j can be reduced to that of the above set.
Diophantine problems involving recurrence sequences have a long history and is an actively studied topic within number theory. In this paper, we connect to the field by considering the equation \begin{align*} B_mB_{m+d}\dots B_{m+(k-1)d}=y^\ell \end{align*} in positive integers $m,d,k,y$ with $\gcd(m,d)=1$ and $k\geq 2$, where $\ell\geq 2$ is a fixed integer and $B=(B_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is an elliptic divisibility sequence, an important class of non-linear recurrences. We prove that the above equation admits only finitely many solutions. In fact, we present an algorithm to find all possible solu…
Given two polynomials $P(\underline x)$, $Q(\underline x)$ in one or more variables and with integer coefficients, how does the property that they are coprime relate to their values $P(\underline n), Q(\underline n)$ at integer points $\underline n$ being coprime? We show that the set of all $\gcd (P(\underline n), Q(\underline n))$ is stable under gcd and under lcm. A notable consequence is a result of Schinzel: if in addition $P$ and $Q$ have no fixed prime divisor (i.e., no prime dividing all values $P(\underline n)$, $Q(\underline n)$), then $P$ and $Q$ assume coprime values at "many" inte…
Let $S_{\rm lcm}(n)$ denote the set of permutations $π$ of $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ such that ${\rm lcm}[j,π(j)]\le n$ for each $j\in[n]$. Further, let $S_{\rm div}(n)$ denote the number of permutations $π$ of $[n]$ such that $j\midπ(j)$ or $π(j)\mid j$ for each $j\in[n]$. Clearly $S_{\rm div}(n)\subset S_{\rm lcm}(n)$. We get upper and lower bounds for the counts of these sets, showing they grow geometrically. We also prove a conjecture from a recent paper on the number of "anti-coprime" permutations of $[n]$, meaning that each $\gcd(j,π(j))>1$ except when $j=1$.
We present here a method which allows to derive a nontrivial lower bounds for the least common multiple of some finite sequences of integers. We obtain efficient lower bounds (which in a way are optimal) for the arithmetic progressions and lower bounds less efficient (but nontrivial) for quadratic sequences whose general term has the form $u_n = a n (n + t) + b$ with $(a, t, b) \in {\mathbb{Z}}^3, a \geq 5, t \geq 0, \rm{gcd}(a, b) = 1$. From this, we deduce for instance the lower bound: $\mathrm{lcm}\{1^2 + 1, 2^2 + 1, ..., n^2 + 1\} \geq 0,32 (1,442)^n$ (for all $n \geq 1$). In the last part…
We determine all triples $(a,b,n)$ of positive integers such that $a$ and $b$ are relatively prime and $n^k$ divides $a^n + b^n$ (respectively, $a^n - b^n$), when $k$ is the maximum of $a$ and $b$ (in fact, we answer a slightly more general question). As a by-product, it is found that, for $m, n \in \mathbb N^+$ with $n \ge 2$, $n^m$ divides $ m^n + 1$ if and only if $(m,n)=(2,3)$ or $(1,2)$, which generalizes problems from the 1990 and 1999 editions of the International Mathematical Olympiad. The results are related to a conjecture by K. Győry and C. Smyth on the finiteness of the sets $R_k^\…
This paper is devoted to establish nontrivial effective lower bounds for the least common multiple of consecutive terms of a sequence ${(u_n)}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ whose general term has the form $u_n = r {[n]}_q + u_0$, where $q , r$ are positive integers and $u_0$ is a non-negative integer such that $\mathrm{gcd}(u_0 , r) = \mathrm{gcd}(u_1 , q) = 1$. For such a sequence, we show that for all positive integer $n$, we have $\mathrm{lcm}\{u_1 , u_2 , \dots , u_n\} \geq c_1 \cdot c_2^n \cdot q^{\frac{n^2}{4}}$, where $c_1$ and $c_2$ are positive constants depending only on $q , r$ and $u_0$. Thi…

For each positive integer $k$, let $\mathscr{A}_k$ be the set of all positive integers $n$ such that $\gcd(n, F_n) = k$, where $F_n$ denotes the $n$th Fibonacci number. We prove that the asymptotic density of $\mathscr{A}_k$ exists and is equal to $$\sum_{d = 1}^\infty \frac{μ(d)}{\operatorname{lcm}(dk, z(dk))}$$ where $μ$ is the Möbius function and $z(m)$ denotes the least positive integer $n$ such that $m$ divides $F_n$. We also give an effective criterion to establish when the asymptotic density of $\mathscr{A}_k$ is zero and we show that this is the case if and only if $\mathscr{A}_k$ is e…
The Bourque-Ligh conjecture states that if $S=\{x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n\}$ is a gcd-closed set of positive integers with distinct elements, then the LCM matrix $[S]=[\hbox{lcm}(x_i,x_j)]$ is invertible. It is well known that this conjecture holds for $n\leq7$ but does not generally hold for $n\geq8$. In this paper we provide a lattice-theoretic explanation for this solution of the Bourque-Ligh conjecture. In fact, let $(P,\leq)=(P,\land,\lor)$ be a lattice, let $S=\{x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n\}$ be a subset of $P$ and let $f:P\to{\mathbb C}$ be a function. We study under which conditions the join matrix $[…
A divisibility sequence is a sequence of integers $\{d_n\}$ such that $d_m$ divides $d_n$ if $m$ divides $n$. Results of Bugeaud, Corvaja, Zannier, among others, have shown that the gcd of two divisibility sequences corresponding to subgroups of the multiplicative group grows in a controlled way. Silverman conjectured that a similar behaviour should appear in many algebraic groups. We extend results by Ghioca-Hsia-Tucker and Silverman for elliptic curves and prove an analogue of Silverman's conjecture over function fields for abelian and split semiabelian varieties and some generalizations of …
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a number field of degree $n$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $\widehat{\mathbb{A}}$ be the set of integers of $\mathbb{K}$ which are primitive over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $I(\mathbb{K})$ be its index. Gunji and McQuillan defined the following integer $i(\mathbb{K})=\underset{θ\in \widehat{\mathbb{A}}}{\text{lcm}}\;i(θ)$, where $i(θ)=\underset{x\in \mathbb{Z}}{\text{gcd}}\;F_θ(x)$ and $F_θ(x)$ is the characteristic polynomial of $θ$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that if $p$ is a prime number less than or equal to $n$ then there exists a number field $\mathbb{K}$ of degree $n$ for which $p$ d…
Let $(P,\preceq)$ be a lattice and $f$ a complex-valued function on $P$. We define meet and join matrices on two arbitrary subsets $X$ and $Y$ of $P$ by $(X,Y)_f=(f(x_i\wedge y_j))$ and $[X,Y]_f=(f(x_i\vee x_j))$ respectively. Here we present expressions for the determinant and the inverse of $[X,Y]_f$. Our main goal is to cover the case when $f$ is not semimultiplicative since the formulas presented earlier for $[X,Y]_f$ cannot be applied in this situation. In cases when $f$ is semimultiplicative we obtain several new and known formulas for the determinant and inverse of $(X,Y)_f$ and the usu…
In this paper we study the positive definiteness of meet and join matrices using a novel approach. When the set $S_n$ is meet closed, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the positive definiteness of the matrix $(S_n)_f$. From this condition we obtain some sufficient conditions for positive definiteness as corollaries. We also use graph theory and show that by making some graph theoretic assumptions on the set $S_n$ we are able to reduce the assumptions on the function $f$ while still preserving the positive definiteness of the matrix $(S_n)_f$. Dual theorems of these results for j…
