This work concerns the design and analysis of a limiting technique that allows the preservation of invariant domains for high-order numerical approximations of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The method can be applied to any conservative discretization method in space as well as to a wide range of explicit and implicit time integration schemes. The method limits the high-order solution around a low-order accurate solution that is known to preserve all the invariant domains. It generalizes the flux-corrected transport limiter [J. P. Boris and D. L. Book, J. Comput. Phys., 11, 1973; S. T. Zalesak, J. Comput. Phys., 31, 1979] to systems of conservation laws and relies on the limitation of antidiffusive fluxes, but defines the limiting coefficients so as to express the limited solution as a convex combination of invariant domain preserving quantities similarly to the convex limiting framework [Guermond et al., Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg., 347, 2019]. We give details on the derivation of this limiting technique and provide some illustration with finite volume or discontinuous Galerkin (DG) space discretizations associated to explicit or implicit Runge-Kutta methods as well as to time DG integrations. The limiter is applied iteratively to refine the limited solution around the high-order one, while preserving the invariant domains, and a heuristic is proposed to accelerate its convergence. Numerical experiments solving one- and two-dimensional problems involving scalar hyperbolic equations and the compressible Euler equations are presented to illustrate the properties of these schemes.
Conservation properties of iterative methods applied to implicit finite volume discretizations of nonlinear conservation laws are analyzed. It is shown that any consistent multistep or Runge-Kutta method is globally conservative. Further, it is shown that Newton's method, Krylov subspace methods and pseudo-time iterations are globally conservative while the Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel methods are not in general. If pseudo-time iterations using an explicit Runge-Kutta method are applied to a locally conservative discretization, then the resulting scheme is also locally conservative. However, the co…
Most research on preconditioners for time-dependent PDEs has focused on implicit multi-step or diagonally-implicit multi-stage temporal discretizations. In this paper, we consider monolithic multigrid preconditioners for fully-implicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta (RK) time integration methods. These temporal discretizations have very attractive accuracy and stability properties, but they couple the spatial degrees of freedom across multiple time levels, requiring the solution of very large linear systems. We extend the classical Vanka relaxation scheme to implicit RK discretizations of saddle poin…
In this work we present a framework for enforcing discrete maximum principles in discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. The developed schemes are applicable to scalar conservation laws as well as hyperbolic systems. Our methodology for limiting volume terms is similar to recently proposed methods for continuous Galerkin approximations, while DG flux terms require novel stabilization techniques. Piecewise Bernstein polynomials are employed as shape functions for the DG spaces, thus facilitating the use of very high order spatial approximations. We discuss the design of a new, provably inv…
We introduce a general framework for enforcing local or global maximum principles in high-order space-time discretizations of a scalar hyperbolic conservation law. We begin with sufficient conditions for a space discretization to be bound preserving (BP) and satisfy a semi-discrete maximum principle. Next, we propose a global monolithic convex (GMC) flux limiter which has the structure of a flux-corrected transport (FCT) algorithm but is applicable to spatial semi-discretizations and ensures the BP property of the fully discrete scheme for strong stability preserving (SSP) Runge-Kutta time dis…
A novel theoretical convergence rate estimate for a Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints algorithm is proven for the solution of the cardiac Bidomain model, describing the propagation of the electric impulse in the cardiac tissue. The non-linear system arises from a fully implicit time discretization and a monolithic solution approach. The preconditioned non-symmetric operator is constructed from the linearized system arising within the Newton-Krylov approach for the solution of the non-linear problem; we theoretically analyze and prove a convergence rate bound for the Generalised Min…

We present an a posteriori error analysis for one-dimensional random hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. For the discretization of the random space we consider the Non-Intrusive Spectral Projection method, the spatio-temporal discretization uses the Runge--Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin method. We derive an a posteriori error estimator using smooth reconstructions of the numerical solution, which combined with the relative entropy stability framework yields computable error bounds for the space-stochastic discretization error. Moreover, we show that the estimator admits a splitting into a s…
The paper describes the construction of entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin difference (DGD) discretizations for hyperbolic conservation laws on unstructured grids. The construction takes advantage of existing theory for entropy-stable summation-by-parts (SBP) discretizations. In particular, the paper shows how DGD discretizations -- both linear and nonlinear -- can be constructed by defining the SBP trial and test functions in terms of interpolated DGD degrees of freedom. In the case of entropy-stable discretizations, the entropy variables rather than the conservative variables must be inte…
In this work, we modify a continuous Galerkin discretization of a scalar hyperbolic conservation law using new algebraic correction procedures. Discrete entropy conditions are used to determine the minimal amount of entropy stabilization and constrain antidiffusive corrections of a property-preserving low-order scheme. The addition of a second-order entropy dissipative component to the antidiffusive part of a nearly entropy conservative numerical flux is generally insufficient to prevent violations of local bounds in shock regions. Our monolithic convex limiting technique adjusts a given targe…
An extension of the two-step staggered time discretization of linear elastodynamics in stress-velocity form to systems involving internal variables subjected to a possibly non-linear dissipative evolution is proposed. The original scheme is thus enhanced by another step for the internal variables which, in general, is implicit, although even this step might be explicit if no spatial gradients of the internal variables are involved. Using an abstract Banach-space formulation, a-priori estimates and convergence are proved under a CFL condition. The developed three-step scheme finds applications …
For the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert (LLG) equation of micromagnetics we study linearly implicit backward difference formula (BDF) time discretizations up to order $5$ combined with higher-order non-conforming finite element space discretizations, which are based on the weak formulation due to Alouges but use approximate tangent spaces that are defined by $L^2$-averaged instead of nodal orthogonality constraints. We prove stability and optimal-order error bounds in the situation of a sufficiently regular solution. For the BDF methods of orders $3$ to~$5$, this requires %a mild time step restricti…
This paper presents a structure-preserving spatial discretization method for distributed parameter port-Hamiltonian systems. The class of considered systems are hyperbolic systems of two conservation laws in arbitrary spatial dimension and geometries. For these systems, a partioned finite element method is derived, based on the integration by parts of one of the two conservation laws written in weak form. The nonlinear 1D Shallow Water Equation (SWE) is first considered as a motivation example. Then the method is investigated on the example of the nonlinear 2D SWE. Complete derivation of the r…
We show that the second-order accurate generalized-$α$ method on a uniform temporal mesh may be viewed as an implicit midpoint method on a shifted temporal mesh. With this insight, we demonstrate generalized-$α$ time integration of a finite element spatial discretization of a conservation law system results in a fully-discrete method admitting discrete balance laws when (i) the time integration is second-order accurate, (ii) a uniform temporal mesh is employed, (iii) the spatial discretization is conservative, and (iv) conservation variables are discretized.
We provide a framework for high-order discretizations of nonlinear scalar convection-diffusion equations that satisfy a discrete maximum principle. The resulting schemes can have arbitrarily high order accuracy in time and space, and can be stable and maximum-principle-preserving (MPP) with no step size restriction. The schemes are based on a two-tiered limiting strategy, starting with a high-order limiter-based method that may have small oscillations or maximum-principle violations, followed by an additional limiting step that removes these violations while preserving high order accuracy. The…
This work extends the concepts of algebraic flux correction and convex limiting to continuous high-order Bernstein finite element discretizations of scalar hyperbolic problems. Using an array of adjustable diffusive fluxes, the standard Galerkin approximation is transformed into a nonlinear high-resolution scheme which has the compact sparsity pattern of the piecewise-linear or multilinear subcell discretization. The representation of this scheme in terms of invariant domain preserving states makes it possible to prove the validity of local discrete maximum principles under CFL-like conditions…
Many interesting applications of hyperbolic systems of equations are stiff, and require the time step to satisfy restrictive stability conditions. One way to avoid small time steps is to use implicit time integration. Implicit integration is quite straightforward for first order schemes. High order schemes instead need also to control spurious oscillations, which requires limiting in space and time also in the implicit case. We propose a framework to simplify considerably the application of high order non oscillatory schemes through the introduction of a low order implicit predictor, which is …
We present a novel implicit scheme for the numerical solution of time-dependent conservation laws. The core idea of the presented method is to exploit and approximate the mixed spatial-temporal derivative of the solution that occurs naturally when deriving some second order accurate schemes in time. Such an approach is introduced in the context of the Lax-Wendroff (or Cauchy-Kowalevski) procedure when the second time derivative is not completely replaced by space derivatives using the PDE, but the mixed derivative is kept. If approximated in a suitable way, the resulting compact implicit schem…

This study concerns numerical methods for efficiently solving the Richards equation where different weak formulations and computational techniques are analyzed. The spatial discretizations are based on standard or mixed finite element methods. Different implicit and semi-implicit temporal discretization techniques of second-order accuracy are studied. To obtain a linear system for the semi-implicit schemes, we propose second-order techniques using extrapolation formulas and/or semi-implicit Taylor approximations for the temporal discretization of nonlinear terms. A numerical convergence study …
Spectral approximation based on Hermite-Fourier expansion of the Vlasov-Poisson model for a collisionless plasma in the electro-static limit is provided, by including high-order artificial collision operators of Lenard-Bernstein type. These differential operators are suitably designed in order to preserve the physically-meaningful invariants (number of particles, momentum, energy). In view of time-discretization, stability results in appropriate norms are presented. In this study, necessary conditions link the magnitude of the artificial collision term, the number of spectral modes of the disc…
Two novel parallel Newton-Krylov Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints (BDDC) and Dual-Primal Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting (FETI-DP) solvers are here constructed, analyzed and tested numerically for implicit time discretizations of the three-dimensional Bidomain system of equations. This model represents the most advanced mathematical description of the cardiac bioelectrical activity and it consists of a degenerate system of two non-linear reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs), coupled with a stiff system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). A fin…
Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…
We analyze, from the viewpoint of positivity preservation, certain discretizations of a fundamental partial differential equation, the one-dimensional advection equation with periodic boundary condition. The full discretization is obtained by coupling a finite difference spatial semi-discretization (the second- and some higher-order centered difference schemes, or the Fourier spectral collocation method) with an arbitrary $θ$-method in time (including the forward and backward Euler methods, and a second-order method by choosing $θ\in [0,1]$ suitably). The full discretization generates a two-pa…
We propose a second order, fully semi-Lagrangian method for the numerical solution of systems of advection-diffusion-reaction equations, which employs a semi-Lagrangian approach to approximate in time both the advective and the diffusive terms. Standard interpolation procedures are used for the space discretization on structured and unstructured meshes. The proposed method allows for large time steps, while avoiding the solution of large linear systems, which would be required by an implicit time discretization technique. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed appr…

We consider a numerical approximation of a linear quadratic control problem constrained by the stochastic heat equation with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. This involves a combination of distributed and boundary control, as well as both distributed and boundary noise. We apply the finite element method for the spatial discretization and the linear implicit Euler method for the temporal discretization. Due to the low regularity induced by the boundary noise, convergence orders above 1/2 in space and 1/4 in time cannot be expected. We prove such optimal convergence orders for our f…
In this work, we propose a novel framework for the numerical solution of time-dependent conservation laws with implicit schemes via primal-dual hybrid gradient methods. We solve an initial value problem (IVP) for the partial differential equation (PDE) by casting it as a saddle point of a min-max problem and using iterative optimization methods to find the saddle point. Our approach is flexible with the choice of both time and spatial discretization schemes. It benefits from the implicit structure and gains large regions of stability, and overcomes the restriction on the mesh size in time by e…
