Quantum many-body scars are atypical nonthermal states embedded in the chaotic spectrum that evade conventional ergodicity. We propose the asymptotically AdS mini-boson star as a holographic candidate for scar-like states. Their spectrum exhibits random-matrix signatures of chaos while supporting embedded integrable spectral branches. The whole holographic system, including black holes, is generically chaotic with most eigenstates satisfying the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis; in contrast, the boson star macrostate probes a near-integrable subsector within this chaotic spectrum, signaling scarred spectral structures. Boson stars further display anomalously low entanglement relative to black holes at the same energy density, and also robust revivals in Krylov complexity, revealing nonergodic dynamics. These spectral, entanglement, and dynamical diagnostics provide unified evidence for holographic quantum scars in a self-gravitating system. Our work suggests a new connection between many-body scar physics, quantum chaos, and horizonless gravitational dynamics.
We consider a holographic set-up where relativistic invariance is broken by a chemical potential, and a non-abelian internal symmetry is broken spontaneously. We use the tool of holographic renormalization in order to infer what can be learned purely by analytic boundary considerations. We find that the expected Ward identities are correctly reproduced. In particular, we obtain the identity which implies the non-commutation of a pair of broken charges, which leads to the presence of Goldstone bosons with quadratic dispersion relations.
Pseudo-Goldstone bosons in 4D strongly coupled theories have a dual description in terms of 5D gauge theories in warped backgrounds. We introduce systematic methods of computing the pseudo-Goldstone potential for an arbitrary warp factor in 5D. When applied to electroweak symmetry breaking, our approach clarifies the relation of physical observables to geometrical quantities in five dimensions.
We study a general flat space/boson star transition model in quasi-local ensemble through approaches familiar from holographic superconductor theories. We manage to find a parameter $ψ_{2}$, which is proved to be useful in disclosing properties of phase transitions. In this work, we explore effects of the scalar mass, scalar charge and St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg mechanism on the critical phase transition points and the order of transitions mainly from behaviors of the parameter $ψ_{2}$. We mention that properties of transitions in quasi-local gravity are strikingly similar to those in holographic su…
We study non-spinning Q-balls and boson stars in 4-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We use an exponential scalar field potential that appears in gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). We investigate the dependence of the charge and mass of these non-topological solitons on the negative cosmological constant, the frequency that appears in the periodic time-dependence as well as on the ratio between the SUSY breaking scale and the Planck mass. Next to fundamental solutions without nodes in the scalar field fu…
We show that holography poses non-trivial restrictions on various couplings of an interacting field. For a vector boson in the AdS Reissner-Nordstrom background, the dual boundary theory is pathological unless its electromagnetic and gravitational multipole moments are constrained. Among others, a generic dipole moment afflicts the dual CFT with superluminal modes, whose remedy bounds the gyromagnetic ratio in a range around the natural value g=2. We discuss the CFT implications of our results, and argue that similar considerations can shed light on how massive higher-spin fields couple to ele…
The Goldstone theorem implies the appearance of an ungapped mode whenever a continuous global symmetry is spontaneously broken. In general it does not say anything about the precise form of the dispersion relation nor does it imply that there is one massless mode for each broken symmetry generator. It is a well-established fact that even for relativistic field theories in the presence of a chemical potential Goldstone modes with quadratic dispersion relation, the type II Goldstone bosons, appear in the spectrum. We develop two holographic models that feature type II Goldstone modes as part of …
We study thermodynamics of flat space/boson star systems enclosed in a scalar reflecting box with St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg mechanism. We also disclose effects of model parameters on transitions and the properties appear to be qualitatively the same as those in holographic St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg transitions. Moreover, we obtain a relation $\barζ\thickapprox 2 \tildeζ$ and the second order characteristic exponent, which also hold in holographic superconductor theories. The similarity between quasi-local thermodynamic transitions and holographic transitions provides additional evidences that holographi…
The maximum entropy that can be stored in a bounded region of space is in dispute: it goes as volume, implies (non-gravitational) microphysics; it goes as the surface area, asserts the "holographic principle." Here I show how the holographic bound can be derived from elementary flat-spacetime quantum field theory when the total energy of Fock states is constrained gravitationally. This energy constraint makes the Fock space dimension (whose logarithm is the maximum entropy) finite for both Bosons and Fermions. Despite the elementary nature of my analysis, it results in an upper limit on entrop…
In this paper, inspired by the holographic dual of the entanglement entropy, we consider the behaviour of extremal, codimension two, spacelike surfaces in the background of three and four dimensional charged boson stars in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. We find conditions for which families of minimal area surfaces fail to contain the entire bulk spacetime and construct a phase diagram showcasing the transition between regimes. In addition, we use the relation between the star's mass and the central density of the scalar field to argue for a possible instability of such hollow soluti…
We critically discuss the possibility that the 125 GeV boson recently discovered at the LHC is the holographic techni-dilaton, a composite state emerging from a strongly-coupled model of electroweak symmetry breaking. This composite state differs from the SM for three main reasons. Its decay constant is in general larger than the electroweak scale, hence suppressing all the couplings to standard model particles with respect to an elementary Higgs boson, with the exception of the coupling to photons and gluons, which is expected to be larger than the standard-model equivalent. We discuss three …
Employing a thermodynamic interpretation of gravity based on the holographic principle and assuming underlying particle statistics, fermionic or bosonic, for the excitations of the holographic screen leads to Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). A connection between the acceleration scale $a_0$ appearing in MOND and the Fermi energy of the holographic fermionic degrees of freedom is obtained. In this formulation the physics of MOND results from the quantum-classical crossover in the fermionic specific heat. However, due to the dimensionality of the screen, the formalism is general and applies t…
We study a conjectured connection between the AdS/CFT and a real-space quantum renormalization group scheme, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). By making a close contact with the holographic formula of the entanglement entropy, we propose a general definition of the metric in the MERA in the extra holographic direction, which is formulated purely in terms of quantum field theoretical data. Using the continuum version of the MERA (cMERA), we calculate this emergent holographic metric explicitly for free scalar boson and free fermions theories, and check that the metric …
The AdS/CFT correspondence allows to relate 4D strongly coupled theories to weakly coupled theories in 5D AdS. We use this correspondence to study a scenario in which the Higgs appears as a composite pseudo-Goldstone boson (PGB) of a strongly coupled theory. We show how a non-linearly realized global symmetry protects the Higgs mass and guarantees the absence of quadratic divergences at any loop order. The gauge and Yukawa interactions for the PGB Higgs are introduced in a simply way in the 5D AdS theory, and their one-loop contributions to the Higgs potential are calculated using perturbation…
Quantum fluctuations of spacetime give rise to quantum foam, and black hole physics dictates that the foam is of holographic type. Applied to cosmology, the holographic model requires the existence of dark energy which, we argue, is composed of an enormous number of inert ``particles'' of extremely long wavelength. These "particles" necessarily obey infinite statistics in which all representations of the particle permutation group can occur. For every boson or fermion in the present observable universe there could be $\sim 10^{31}$ such "particles". We also discuss the compatibility between th…
We study the holographic dual of a finite density system with both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. There is no evidence for a universal bose-dominated ground state. Instead, depending on the relative conformal weights the preferred groundstate is either pure AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom, a holographic superconductor, an electron star, or a novel mixed state that is best characterized as a hairy electron star.
We reassess employing the holographic technique to the description of 4D minimal composite Higgs model with $SO(5)\to SO(4)$ global symmetry breaking pattern. The particular 5D bottom-up holographic treatment is inspired by previous work in the context of QCD and it allows to study spin one and spin zero resonances. The resulting spectrum consists of the states transforming under the unbroken $SO(4)$ subgroup and those with quantum numbers in the $SO(5)/SO(4)$ coset. The spin one states are arranged in linear radial trajectories, and the states from the broken subgroup are generally heavier. T…
In the holographic framework, a half BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills in the fundamental, symmetric or antisymmetric representation of SU(N), is best described by a fundamental string, a D3 brane or a D5 brane with fluxes in their worldvolumes, respectively. We derive the spectrum of excitations of such D3 brane in $AdS_5\times S^5$ explicitly, considering its action in both the bosonic and the fermionic sectors, and demonstrate that it is organized according to short multiplets of the supergroup $OSp(4^*|4)$. We also show that the modes of the fundamental string form …
We compute the neutral bosonic excitation spectra of the holographic quantum Hall fluid described by the D3-D7' system. We find that the system is stable, gapped, and, in a range of parameters, exhibits a spectrum of low-lying excitations very similar to that of a quantum Hall fluid, including a magneto-roton excitation.
We construct a dual description of technicolor theory based on the D4/D8 brane configuration. A strongly-coupled technicolor theory is identified as the effective theory on D-branes, and from the gauge/gravity correspondence, we explore the weakly-coupled holographic description of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. It is found from the D-brane probe action that the masses of W and Z bosons are given by the decay constant of technipion, and the technimesons become hierarchically heavy. Moreover, the couplings of heavier modes to standard model fermions are rather suppressed. The oblique …
Light-cone cuts have recently been proposed as a method to reconstruct the conformal metric of a holographic spacetime. We explore how additional information about the bulk geometry gets encoded in the structure of these light-cone cuts. In particular, we study how the hyperbolic angle related to a cusp in the light-cone cut encodes information about the matter content of the spacetime. We provide an explicit numerical example reconstructing the metric for a 4- dimensional spacetime composed by the superposition of a boson star and a gas of radiation in AdS.
A non-critical holographic QCD model constructed in the six dimensional Anti-de-Sitter ($AdS_6$) supergravity background is employed to study a the baryon. It is shown that the size of the baryon is of order one with respect to the $λ$, however, it is smaller than the scale of the dual QCD. An effective four dimensional action for the nucleon is obtained in terms of the meson exchange potentials. All meson-nucleon couplings in the non-critical $AdS_6$ background are calculated. Results obtained using our model are compared with predictions of four modern phenomenological interaction models. Al…
Boson stars are stationary soliton-like gravitational configurations supported by a complex scalar field charged under the global $U(1)$ symmetry. We discuss properties of boson stars in type IIB supergravity approximation to string theory. A notable difference is that in supergravity models the global symmetry of the complex scalar field is gauged. We focus on global asymptotically $AdS_5$ space-time, where the boson stars are expected to represent stable low-energy non-thermal excitations in holographically dual quiver conformal gauge theory.
Recently, realistic theories of electroweak symmetry breaking have been constructed in which the electroweak symmetry is broken by boundary conditions imposed at a boundary of higher dimensional spacetime. These theories have equivalent 4D dual descriptions, in which the electroweak symmetry is dynamically broken by non-trivial infrared dynamics of some gauge interaction, whose coupling g and size N satisfy g^2N > 16pi^2. Such theories allow one to calculate electroweak radiative corrections, including the oblique parameters S, T and U, as long as g^2N/16pi^2 and N are large. We study how the …
A possible discrepancy has been found between the results of a neutron interferometry experiment and Quantum Mechanics. This experiment suggests that the weak equivalence principle is violated at small length scales, which quantum mechanics cannot explain. In this paper, we investigated whether the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP), proposed by some approaches to quantum gravity such as String Theory and Doubly Special Relativity Theories (DSR), can explain the violation of the weak equivalence principle at small length scales. We also investigated the consequences of the GUP on the Liou…
We study holographic Fermi surfaces coupled to a bosonic degree of freedom using the gauge/gravity correspondence. The gravity background is a charged black hole in asymptotically AdS spacetime. We introduce a neutral scalar field with parameters such that the system is at a quantum phase transition point. We further introduce a Dirac field and couple it to the scalar. At finite N, these fields interact in the bulk. We compute the bulk one-loop contribution to the boundary fermionic self-energies at various quantum phase transition points. The results would give an embedding of the marginal Fe…
We systematically study the spectrum of excitations and the one-loop determinant of holographic Wilson loop operators in antisymmetric representations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Holographically, these operators are described by D5-branes carrying electric flux and wrapping an $S^4 \subset S^5$ in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ bulk background. We derive the dynamics of both bosonic and fermionic excitations for such D5-branes. A particularly important configuration in this class is the D5-brane with $AdS_2\times S^4$ worldvolume and $k$ units of electric flux, which is dual to…
We study the viability of spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries in theories with Lifshitz scaling, according to the number of space-time dimensions $d$ and the dynamical scaling $z$. Then, the answer to the question in the title is no (quantum field theoretically) and yes (holographically). With field theory tools, we show that symmetry breaking is indeed prevented by large quantum fluctuations when $d\leq z+1$, as expected from scaling arguments. With holographic tools, on the other hand, we find nothing that prevents the existence of a vacuum expectation value. This difference is mad…
We revisit the construction of the composite Higgs models in a context of the bottom-up holographic approach. The soft wall framework is under consideration imposing the translation of the $4D$ global symmetry breaking characteristic to the new strongly interacting sector in the $5D$ bulk. The focus stays on the minimal $SO(5)\to SO(4)$ breaking pattern. The $5D$ model has a specific form inspired by the effective models of QCD, representing a generalized sigma model coupled both to the composite resonances and to the SM gauge bosons. The latter are treated as external $4D$ sources and concept…
We refer to the ground state of a gravitating, charged ideal fluid of fermions held at a finite chemical potential as an `electron star'. In a holographic setting, electron stars are candidate gravity duals for strongly interacting finite fermion density systems. We show how electron stars develop an emergent Lifshitz scaling at low energies. This IR scaling region is a consequence of the two way interaction between emergent quantum critical bosonic modes and the finite density of fermions. By integrating from the IR region to an asymptotically AdS_4 spacetime, we compute basic properties of t…

I comment on Ulvi Yurtsever's result, which states that the entropy of a truncated bosonic Fock space is given by a holographic bound when the energy of the Fock states is constrained gravitationally. The derivation given in Yurtsever's paper contains an subtle mistake, which invalidates the result. A more restrictive, non-holographic entropy bound is derived.
According to the holographic principle, the maximum amount of information stored in a region of space scales as the area of its two-dimensional surface, like a hologram. We show that the holographic principle can be understood heuristically as originated from quantum fluctuations of spacetime. Applied to cosmology, this consideration leads to a dynamical cosmological constant $Λ$ of the observed magnitude, in agreement with the result obtained for the present and recent cosmic eras, by using unimodular gravity and causal-set theory. By generalizing the concept of entropic gravity, we find a cr…
We study quantum corrections to holographic mutual information for two disjoint spheres at a large separation by using the operator product expansion of the twist field. In the large separation limit, the holographic mutual information is vanishing at the semiclassical order, but receive quantum corrections from the fluctuations. We show that the leading contributions from the quantum fluctuations take universal forms as suggested from the boundary CFT. We find the universal behavior for the scalar, the vector, the tensor and the fermionic fields by treating these fields as free fields propaga…
Identification of glueballs -- bound states of gauge bosons in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) -- is a very important open question in dynamics of the strong interaction. The search for the glueball ground state, carrying scalar quantum numbers, poses a particular challenge due to the existence of (i) several candidates for its realisation in the physical spectrum and (ii) inevitable mixing of the pure glueball state with those comprised of quarks. In this article, I discuss implications of an approach in holographic QCD where, among others, the mass and the two-pion decay of the pure scalar glue…
We explore bosonic string sigma models on warped $ BTZ\times S^3 $ both in the plane wave as well as beyond plane wave limit. Using the light cone gauge, we obtain the corresponding Hamiltonian and therefore the spectrum associated with the pp wave strings. Our analysis reveals a constant shift in the spectrum arising as a result of TsT transformations along the isometries of the target space manifold. Imposing the energy positivity constraint on the CFT$_2 $ spectrum, we estimate an upper bound on the shift. We also estimate corrections as we go beyond the plane wave limit. Finally, we perfor…
We describe the lowest Landau level of a quantum electron star in AdS4. In the presence of a suitably strong magnetic field, the dynamics of fermions in the bulk is effectively reduced from four to two dimensions. These two-dimensional fermions can subsequently be treated using the techniques of bosonization and the difficult many-body problem of building a gravitating, charged quantum star is reduced to solving the sine-Gordon model coupled to a gauge field and a metric. The kinks of the sine-Gordon model provide the holographic dual of the lowest Landau levels of the strongly-coupled d=2+1 d…
The leading term for the energy of a bound state of k-quarks and k-antiquarks is proportional to its separation L. These k-string configurations have a Luscher term associated with their quantum fluctuations which is typically a 1/L correction to the energy. We review the status of tensions and Luscher terms in the context of lattice gauge theory, Hamiltonian methods, and gauge/gravity correspondence. Furthermore we explore how different representations of the k-string manifest themselves in the gauge/gravity duality. We calculate the Luscher term for a strongly coupled SU(N) gauge theory in (…
We consider the finite temperature phase diagram of holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit (Nc large, Nf large with xf=Nf/Nc fixed) and calculate one string-loop corrections to the free energy in certain approximations. Such corrections, especially due to the pion modes are unsuppressed in the Veneziano limit. We find that under some extra assumptions the first order transition following from classical gravity solutions can become second order. If stringy asymptotics are of a special form and there are residual interactions it may even become of third order. Operationally these computations im…
In this paper we initiate the study of holographic quantum liquids in 1+1 dimensions. Since the Landau Fermi liquid theory breaks down in 1+1 dimensions, it is of interest to see what holographic methods have to say about similar models. For theories with a gapless branch, the Luttinger conjecture states that there is an effective description of the physics in terms of a Luttinger liquid which is specified by two parameters. The theory we consider is the defect CFT arising due to a probe D3 brane in the AdS Schwarzschild planar black hole background. We turn on a fundamental string density on …
We consider the logarithmic negativity and related quantities of time evolution operators. We study free fermion, compact boson, and holographic conformal field theories (CFTs) as well as numerical simulations of random unitary circuits and integrable and chaotic spin chains. The holographic behavior strongly deviates from known non-holographic CFT results and displays clear signatures of maximal scrambling. Intriguingly, the random unitary circuits display nearly identical behavior to the holographic channels. Generically, we find the "line-tension picture" to effectively capture the entangle…
The area law conjecture states that the entanglement entropy of a region of space in the ground state of a gapped, local Hamiltonian only grows like the surface area of the region. We show that, for any quantum state that fulfills an area law, the reduced quantum state of a region of space can be unitarily compressed into a thickened surface of the region. If the interior of the region is lost after this compression, the full quantum state can be recovered to high precision by a quantum channel only acting on the thickened surface. The thickness of the boundary scales inversely proportional to…
Transitions among quantum Hall plateaux share a suite of remarkable experimental features, such as semi-circle laws and duality relations, whose accuracy and robustness are difficult to explain directly in terms of the detailed dynamics of the microscopic electrons. They would naturally follow if the low-energy transport properties were governed by an emergent discrete duality group relating the different plateaux, but no explicit examples of interacting systems having such a group are known. Recent progress using the AdS/CFT correspondence has identified examples with similar duality groups, …
This is a short review of recent developments in the application of AdS/CFT methods to some condensed matter problems. In particular we present the holographic description of a local quantum critical state, related to (non)-Fermi liquids and the strange metal, that appears in large N CFTs with a gravity dual at finite density and zero temperature, and explore its properties by probing it with fermionic operators. Further we discuss possible bosonic and fermionic instabilities, leading to s-, p- or d-wave holographic superconductors and "electron stars". Finally we present a realization of loca…
The spectrum of bound states of special strongly coupled confining field theories might include a parametrically light dilaton, associated with the formation of enhanced condensates that break (approximate) scale invariance spontaneously. It has been suggested in the literature that such a state may arise in connection with the theory being close to the unitarity bound in holographic models. We extend these ideas to cases where the background geometry is non-AdS, and the gravity description of the dual confining field theory has a top-down origin in supergravity. We exemplify this programme by…
