We present a categorical framework for formal systems in which inference rules with $m$ metavariables over a category of syntax $\mathscr{S}$, taken to be a cartesian PROP, are represented by operations of arity $k \to n$ equipped with spans $k \leftarrow m \to n$ in $\mathscr{S}$, encoding the hypotheses and conclusions in a common metavariable context. Composition is by substitution of metavariables, which is the sole primitive operation, as in Metamath.
Proofs in this setting form a symmetric monoidal category whose monoidal structure encodes the combination and reuse of hypotheses. This structure admits a proof-checking algorithm; we provide an open-source implementation together with a surface syntax for defining formal systems. As a demonstration, we encode the formulae and inference rules of first-order logic in Metacat, and give axioms and representative derivations as examples.
In this paper we introduce and study the formal punctured neighborhood of infinity, both in the algebro-geometric and in the DG categorical frameworks. For a smooth algebraic variety $X$ over a field of characteristic zero, one can take its smooth compactification $\bar{X}\supset X,$ and then take the DG category of perfect complexes on the formal punctured neighborhood of the infinity locus $\bar{X}-X.$ The result turns out to be independent of $\bar{X}$ (up to a quasi-equivalence) and we denote this DG category by $\operatorname{Perf}(\hat{X}_{\infty}).$ We show that this construction can be…
We introduce idris-ct, a Idris library providing verified type definitions of categorical concepts.idris-ct strives to be a bridge between academy and industry, catering both to category theorists who want to implement and try their ideas in a practical environment and to businesses and engineers who care about formalization with category theory: It is inspired by similar libraries developed for theorem proving but remains very practical, being aimed at software production in business. Nevertheless, the use of dependent types allows for a formally correct implementation of categorical concepts…
We construct a category, $Ω$, of which the objects are pointed categories and the arrows are pointed correspondences. The notion of a "spec datum" is introduced, as a certain relation between categories, of which one has been given a Grothendieck topology. A "geometry" is interpreted as a sub-category of $Ω$, and a formalism is given by which such a subcategory is to be associated to a spec datum, reflecting the standard construction of the category of schemes from the category of rings by affine charts.
Given a symmetric monoidal $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathscr E$ we promote the trace construction to a functor. We then apply this formalism to the case when $\mathscr{E}$ is the $(\infty,2)$-category of $k$-linear presentable categories which in combination of various calculations in the setting of derived algebraic geometry gives a categorical proof of the classical Atiyah-Bott formula (also known as the Holomorphic Lefschetz fixed point formula).
The notion of $\textbf{Gray}$-category, a semi-strict $3$-category in which the middle four interchange is weakened to an isomorphism, is central in the study of three-dimensional category theory. In this context it is common practice to use $2$-dimensional pasting diagrams to express composites of $2$-cells, however there is no thorough treatment in the literature justifying this procedure. We fill this gap by providing a formal approach to pasting in $\textbf{Gray}$-categories and by proving that such composites are uniquely defined up to a contractible groupoid of choices.
We formalize the simulation paradigm of cryptography in terms of category theory and show that protocols secure against abstract attacks form a symmetric monoidal category, thus giving an abstract model of composable security definitions in cryptography. Our model is able to incorporate computational security, set-up assumptions and various attack models such as colluding or independently acting subsets of adversaries in a modular, flexible fashion. We conclude by using string diagrams to rederive the security of the one-time pad and no-go results concerning the limits of bipartite and tripart…
This article gives an elementary and formal 2-categorical construction of a bicategory of right fractions analogous to anafunctors, starting from a 2-category equipped with a family of covering maps that are fully faithful and co-fully faithful.
Dynamical systems---by which we mean machines that take time-varying input, change their state, and produce output---can be wired together to form more complex systems. Previous work has shown how to allow collections of machines to reconfigure their wiring diagram dynamically, based on their collective state. This notion was called "mode dependence", and while the framework was compositional (forming an operad of re-wiring diagrams and algebra of mode-dependent dynamical systems on it), the formulation itself was more "creative" than it was natural. In this paper we show that the theory of mo…
Motivated by potential applications to theoretical computer science, in particular those areas where the Curry-Howard correspondence plays an important role, as well as by the ongoing search in pure mathematics for feasible approaches to higher category theory, we undertake a detailed study of a new mathematical abstraction, the generalized category. It is a partially defined monoid equipped with endomorphism maps defining sources and targets on arbitrary elements, possibly allowing a proximal behavior with respect to composition. We first present a formal introduction to the theory of general…
Cyber-physical systems require the construction and management of various models to assure their correct, safe, and secure operation. These various models are necessary because of the coupled physical and computational dynamics present in cyber-physical systems. However, to date the different model views of cyber-physical systems are largely related informally, which raises issues with the degree of formal consistency between those various models of requirements, system behavior, and system architecture. We present a category-theoretic framework to make different types of composition explicit …
Transformational music theory, pioneered by the work of Lewin, shifts the music-theoretical and analytical focus from the "object-oriented" musical content to an operational musical process, in which transformations between musical elements are emphasized. In the original framework of Lewin, the set of transformations often form a group, with a corresponding group action on a given set of musical objects. Klumpenhouwer networks have been introduced based on this framework: they are informally labelled graphs, the labels of the vertices being pitch classes, and the labels of the arrows being tr…
Inspired by the foundational works by Spivak and Fong and Cruttwell et al., we introduce a categorical framework to formalize Bayesian inference and learning. The two key ideas at play here are the notions of Bayesian inversions and the functor GL as constructed by Cruttwell et al.. In this context, we find that Bayesian learning is the simplest case of the learning paradigm. We then obtain categorical formulations of batch and sequential Bayes updates while also verifying that the two coincide in a specific example.
