We introduce a framework to upper bound the entanglement content of a bipartite quantum state from its spectrum alone. Using linear maps and their inverses, we derive rigorous constraints on the maximal entanglement that can be activated under global unitary transformations. We use as entanglement quantifiers the negativity and the Schmidt number; however, our framework is general and applies to any other entanglement measure. Our approach yields compact analytical sufficient criteria for bounding the entanglement of full-rank states in arbitrary dimensions and reveals new spectral constraints on Schmidt number witnesses.
Entanglement -- the coherent correlations between parties in a joint quantum system -- is well-understood and quantifiable in the two-dimensional, two-party case. Higher (>2)-dimensional entangled systems hold promise in extending the capabilities of various quantum information applications. Despite the utility of such systems, methods for quantifying high-dimensional entanglement are more limited and experimentally challenging. We review entanglement certification approaches and the large number of -- often difficult -- measurements required to apply them. We present a novel certification met…

The entanglement wedge cross sections (EWCSs) are postulated as dual gravity probes to certain measures for the entanglement of multiparty systems. We test various proposed inequalities for EWCSs. As it turns out, contrary to expectations, the EWCS is not clearly monogamous nor polygamous for tripartite systems but the results depend on the details and dimensionality of the geometry of the gravity solutions. We propose weaker monogamy relations for dual entanglement measures, which lead to a new lower bound on EWCS. Our work is based on a plethora of gravity backgrounds: pure anti de Sitter sp…
We present a method that allows the study of classical and quantum correlations in networks with causally-independent parties, such as the scenario underlying entanglement swapping. By imposing relaxations of factorization constraints in a form compatible with semidefinite programming, it enables the use of the Navascués-Pironio-Acín hierarchy in complex quantum networks. We first show how the technique successfully identifies correlations not attainable in the entanglement-swapping scenario. Then we use it to show how the nonlocal power of measurements can be activated in a network: there exi…
Correlation functions and entanglement are two different aspects to characterize quantum many-body states. While many correlation functions are experimentally accessible, entanglement entropy (EE), the simplest characterization of quantum entanglement, is usually difficult to measure. In this Letter, we propose a protocol to bound EE by local measurements. This protocol utilizes local correlation matrices and focuses on their (approximate) zero eigenvalues. Given a quantum state, each (approximate) zero eigenvalue can be used to define a set of local projection operators. An auxiliary Hamilton…
Gilbert proposed an algorithm for bounding the distance between a given point and a convex set. In this article we apply the Gilbert's algorithm to get an upper bound on the Hilbert-Schmidt distance between a given state and the set of separable states. While Hilbert Schmidt Distance does not form a proper entanglement measure, it can nevertheless be useful for witnessing entanglement. We provide here a few methods based on the Gilbert's algorithm that can reliably qualify a given state as strongly entangled or practically separable, while being computationally efficient. The method also outpu…
The Schmidt coefficients capture all entanglement properties of a pure bipartite state and therefore determine its usefulness for quantum information processing. While the quantification of the corresponding properties in mixed states is important both from a theoretical and a practical point of view, it is considerably more difficult, and methods beyond estimates for the concurrence are elusive. In particular this holds for a quantitative assessment of the most valuable resource, the maximum possible Schmidt number of an arbitrary mixed state. We derive a framework for lower bounding the appr…
In this paper, we study the effect of classical driving field on the spontaneous emission spectrum of a qubit embedded in a dissipative cavity. Furthermore, we monitor the entanglement dynamics of the driven qubit with its radiative decay under the action of the classical field. Afterwards, we carry out an investigation on the possibility of entanglement swapping between two such distinct driven qubits. The swapping will be feasible with the aid of a Bell state measurement performing on the photons leaving the cavities. It is demonstrated that the classical driving field has a beneficial effec…
We present an explicit family of two-qubit X states with entanglement-preserving unitary (EPU) equivalence to the set of general states; that is, for any spectrum-entanglement combination achievable by general states, this family contains an X state of the same spectrum and entanglement. This idea was originally conjectured by the author and supported with strong numerical evidence in arXiv:1310.7038. Then, in Ann. Phys. 351 (2014) 79, the authors proved the existence of such two-qubit unitary transformations, but found the parameters to be transcendental, eluding explicit solution. Here, by a…
Entangled quantum states play an important role in quantum information science and also in quantum mechanics fundamental investigations. Implementation and characterization of techniques allowing for easy preparation of entangled states are important steps in such fields. Here we generated entangled quantum states encoded in photons transversal paths, obtained by pumping a non-linear crystal with multiple transversal Gaussian beams. Such approach allows us to generate entangled states of two qubits and two qutrits encoded in Gaussian transversal path of twin photons. We make a theoretical anal…
Entanglement is not only the resource that fuels many quantum technologies but also plays a key role for some of the most profound open questions of fundamental physics. Experiments controlling quantum systems at the single quantum level may shed light on these puzzles. However, measuring, or even bounding, entanglement experimentally has proven to be an outstanding challenge, especially when the prepared quantum states are mixed. We use entropic uncertainty relations for bipartite systems to derive measurable lower bounds on distillable entanglement. We showcase these bounds by applying them …
Entanglement properties are routinely used to characterize phases of quantum matter in theoretical computations. For example the spectrum of the reduced density matrix, or so-called "entanglement spectrum", has become a widely used diagnostic for universal topological properties of quantum phases. However, while being convenient to calculate theoretically, it is notoriously hard to measure in experiments. Here we use the IBM quantum computer to make the first ever measurement of the entanglement spectrum of a symmetry-protected topological state. We are able to distinguish its entanglement spe…
Entanglement spectrum: Identification of the transition from vortex-liquid to vortex-lattice state in a weakly interacting rotating Bose-Einstein condensate
Clifford circuits are insufficient for universal quantum computation or creating $t$-designs with $t\ge 4$. While the entanglement entropy is not a telltale of this insufficiency, the entanglement spectrum is: the entanglement levels are Poisson-distributed for circuits restricted to the Clifford gate-set, while the levels follow Wigner-Dyson statistics when universal gates are used. In this paper we show, using finite-size scaling analysis of different measures of level spacing statistics, that in the thermodynamic limit, inserting a single T $(π/8)$ gate in the middle of a random Clifford ci…
Entanglement plays an important role in our ability to understand, simulate, and harness quantum many-body phenomena. In this work, we investigate the entanglement spectrum for open one-dimensional systems, and propose a natural quantifier for how much a 1D quantum state is entangled while being subject to decoherence. We demonstrate our method using a simple case of single-particle evolution and find that the open system entanglement spectrum is composed of generalized concurrence values, as well as quantifiers of the state's purity. Our proposed entanglement spectrum can be directly obtained…
We consider two-dimensional states of matter satisfying an uniform area law for entanglement. We show that the topological entanglement entropy is equal to the minimum relative entropy distance from the reduced state to the set of thermal states of local models. The argument is based on strong subadditivity of quantum entropy. For states with zero topological entanglement entropy, in particular, the formula gives locality of the states at the boundary of a region as thermal states of local Hamiltonians. It also implies that the entanglement spectrum of a two-dimensional region is equal to the …
Entanglement is one of the most fundamental features of quantum systems. In this work, we obtain the entanglement spectrum and entropy of Floquet noninteracting fermionic lattice models and build their connections with Floquet topological phases. Topological winding and Chern numbers are introduced to characterize the entanglement spectrum and eigenmodes. Correspondences between the spectrum and topology of entanglement Hamiltonians under periodic boundary conditions and topological edge states under open boundary conditions are further established. The theory is applied to Floquet topological…
Quantum capacities are fundamental quantities that are notoriously hard to compute and can exhibit surprising properties such as superadditivity. Thus, a vast amount of literature is devoted to finding tight and computable bounds on these capacities. We add a new viewpoint by giving operationally motivated bounds on several capacities, including the quantum capacity and private capacity of a quantum channel and the one-way distillable entanglement and private key of a quantum state. These bounds are generally phrased in terms of capacity quantities involving the complementary channel or state.…
We study the entanglement spectrum of topological systems hosting non-Abelian anyons. Akin to energy levels of a Hamiltonian, the entanglement spectrum is composed of symmetry multiplets. We find that the ratio between different eigenvalues within one multiplet is universal and is determined by the anyonic quantum dimensions. This result is a consequence of the conservation of the total topological charge. For systems with non-Abelian topological order, this generalizes known degeneracies of the entanglement spectrum, which are hallmarks of topological states. Experimental detection of these e…
We study the quench dynamics of entanglement spectra in the Kitaev chain with variable-range pairing quantified by power-law decay rate $α$. Considering the post-quench Hamiltonians with flat bands, we demonstrate that the presence of entanglement-spectrum crossings during its dynamics is able to characterize the topological phase transitions (TPTs) in both short-range ($α$ > 1) or long-range ($α$ < 1) sector. Properties of entanglement-spectrum dynamics are revealed for the quench protocols in the long-range sector or with $α$ as the quench parameter. In particular, when the lowest upper-half…
We generalize the position- and momentum-space entanglement cuts to a family of cuts corresponding to regions in the classical phase space. We explicitly compute the entanglement spectra of free fermionic many-body wavefunctions for a family of phase space entanglement cuts that continuously interpolates between position- and momentum-space cuts. For inversion symmetric wavefunctions, the phase space entanglement spectrum possess a chiral symmetry, to which a topological index can be associated.
Entanglement is a central feature of many-body quantum systems and plays a unique role in quantum phase transitions. In many cases, the entanglement spectrum, which represents the spectrum of the density matrix of a bipartite system, contains valuable information beyond the sole entanglement entropy. Here we investigate the entanglement spectrum of the long-range XXZ model. We show that within the critical phase it exhibits a remarkable self-similarity. The breakdown of self-similarity and the transition away from a Luttinger liquid is consistent with renormalization group theory. Combining th…
We explore both pure and mixed states Floquet dynamical quantum phase transitions (FDQFTs) in the one-dimensional p-wave superconductor with a time-driven pairing phase. In the Fourier space, the model is recast to the non-interacting quasi-spins subjected to a time-dependent effective magnetic field. We show that FDQFTs occur within a range of driving frequency without resorting to any quenches. Moreover, FDQFTs appear in the region where quasi-spins are in the resonance regime. In the resonance regime, the population completely cycles the population between the spin down and up states. Addit…
In a closed system, the total number of particles is fixed. We ask how much does this conservation law restrict the amount of entanglement that can be created. We derive a tight upper bound on the bipartite entanglement entropy in closed systems, and find what a maximally entangled state looks like in such a system. Finally, we illustrate numerically on an isolated system of one-dimensional fermionic gas, that the upper bound can be reached during its unitary evolution, when starting in a pure state that emulates a thermal state with high enough temperature. These results are in accordance wit…
