We establish an equivalence between massive spinning particle models in four spacetime dimensions coupled to electromagnetism or gravity, within the spin-magnitude-preserving sector. Four representative models in the literature are shown to describe exactly the same physics in their free and interacting theories: vector oscillator, spinor oscillator, spherical top, and massive twistor. The Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (BMT) and quadrupolar Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (QMPD) equations are derived in a model-independent fashion. This universal framework allows for incorporating higher spin multipole interactions as well. We establish the rigorous construction of the interacting theory of the spherical top model with emphasis on spin gauge invariance. Applications to black hole physics, conserved charges, and post-Newtonian or post-Minkowskian frameworks are discussed.
The motion of spinning relativistic particles in external electromagnetic and gravitational fields is considered. Covariant equations for this motion are demonstrated to possess pathological solutions, when treated nonperturbatively in spin. A self-consistent approach to the problem is formulated, based on the noncovariant description of spin and on the usual, ``naive'' definition of the coordinate of a relativistic particle. A simple description of the gravitational interaction of first order in spin, is pointed out for a relativistic particle. The approach developed allows one to consider ef…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are used for investigations of influence of the spin-gravity coupling on a highly relativistic spinning particle in Schwarzschild's field. It is established that interaction of the particle spin with the gravitomagnetic components of the field, estimated in the proper frame of the particle, causes the large acceleration of the spinning particle relative to geodesic free fall. As a result the accelerated charged spinning particle can generate intensive electromagnetic radiation when its velocity is highly relativistic. The significant contribution of the highl…
We construct the action of a non-relativistic spinning particle moving in a general torsionless Newton-Cartan background. The particle does not follow the geodesic equations, instead the motion is governed by the non-relativistic analog of Papapetrou equation. The spinning particle is described in terms of Grassmann variables. In the flat case the action is invariant under the non-relativistic analog of space-time vector supersymmetry.
We systematically derive an action for a nonrelativistic spinning partile in flat background and discuss its canonical formulation in both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches. This action is taken as the starting point for deriving the corresponding action in a curved background. It is achieved by following our recently developed technique of localising the flat space galilean symmetry \cite{BMM1, BMM3, BMM2}. The coupling of the spinning particle to a Newton-Cartan background is obtained naturally. The equation of motion is found to differ from the geodesic equation, in agreement with earli…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations in the Schwarzschild background both at Mathisson-Pirani and Tulczyjew-Dixon supplementary condition are considered. The region of existence of highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinning particle in this background and dependence of the particle's orbital velocity on its spin and radial coordinate are investigated. It is shown that in contrast to the highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinless particle, which exist only for $r=1.5 r_g(1+δ)$, $0<δ\ll 1$, the corresponding orbits of a spinning particle are allowed in a wider space region, and the d…
Following the Poincare algebra for a free spinning particle and using the Casimirs of the algebra in the Hamiltonian approach, we construct systematically a set of Lagrangians for the relativistic spinning particle which includes the Lagrangian given in the literature. Then we analyze the dynamics of this generalized system in the Lagrangian formulation and show that the equations of motion support an oscillatory solution corresponding to the spinning nature of the system. Next we analyze the canonical structure of the system and present the correct gauge suitable for the spinning motion of th…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations in Kerr's background are considered. The region of existence of highly relativistic planar circular orbits of a spinning particle in this background and dependence of the particle's Lorentz $γ$-factor on its spin and radial coordinate are investigated. It is shown that in contrast to the highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinless particle the corresponding orbits of a spinning particle are allowed in much wider space region. Some of these orbits show the significant attractive action of the spin-gravity coupling on a particle and others are caused by t…
Bañados $et\, al.$ (BSW) found that Kerr black holes can act as particle accelerators with collisions at arbitrarily high center-of-mass energies. Recently, collisions of particles with spin around some rotating black holes have been discussed. In this paper, we study the BSW mechanism for spinning particles by using a metric ansatz which describes a general rotating black hole. We notice that there are two inequivalent definitions of center-of-mass (CM) energy for spinning particles. We mainly discuss the CM energy defined in terms of the worldline of the particle. We show that there exists a…
We consider the motion of a spinning relativistic particle in external electromagnetic and gravitational fields, to first order in the external field, but to an arbitrary order in spin. The noncovariant spin formalism is crucial for the correct description of the influence of the spin on the particle trajectory. We show that the true coordinate of a relativistic spinning particle is its naive, common coordinate $\r$. Concrete calculations are performed up to second order in spin included. A simple derivation is presented for the gravitational spin-orbit and spin-spin interactions of a relativi…
Using the BFV approach we quantize a pseudoclassical model of the spin one half relativistic particle that contains a single bosonic constraint, contrary to the usual locally supersymmetric models that display first and second class constraints.
The gravitational and electromagnetic fields of a moving charged spinning point particle are obtained in the Lorentz covariant form by transforming the Kerr--Newman solution in Boyer--Lindquist coordinates to the one in the coordinate system which resembles the isotropic coordinates and then covariantizing it. It is shown that the general relativistic proper time at the location of the particle is the same as the special relativistic one and the gravitational and electromagnetic self forces vanish.
A massive relativistic spinning point particle in any number of dimensions has in a previous article been shown to be described by first class constraints, which define a gauge theory. In the present paper we find the corresponding finite gauge transformations. By comparing the integrated gauge transformations to transformation equations found by Pryce, we conclude that the selection of gauge corresponds to selection of the relativistic center of mass frame in the model of Pryce, where a spinning particle is considered a composite object. The Lorentz group is identified as the gauge group, and…
In a previous work we showed that spin can be envisioned as living in a phase space that is dual to the standard phase space of position and momentum. In this work we demonstrate that the second class constraints inherent in this "Dual Phase Space" picture can be solved by introducing a spinorial parameterization of the spinning degrees of freedom. This allows for a purely first class formulation that generalizes the usual relativistic description of spinless particles and provides several insights into the nature of spin and its relationship with spacetime and locality. In particular, we find…
The formulation of Berry for the Aharonov-Bohm effect is generalized to the relativistic regime. Then, the problem of finding the self-adjoint extensions of the (2+1)-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian, in an Aharonov-Bohm background potential, is solved in a novel way. The same treatment also solves the problem of finding the self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac Hamiltonian in a background Aharonov-Casher.
A covariant spinor representation of $iosp(d,2/2)$ is constructed for the quantization of the spinning relativistic particle. It is found that, with appropriately defined wavefunctions, this representation can be identified with the state space arising from the canonical extended BFV-BRST quantization of the spinning particle with admissible gauge fixing conditions after a contraction procedure. For this model, the cohomological determination of physical states can thus be obtained purely from the representation theory of the $iosp(d,2/2)$ algebra.
As a sequel to our recent works challenging toward the systematic inclusion of the effect of radiation on the trajectory of a test particle orbiting around a luminous spinning relativistic star eventually aiming at its application to the accretion flow. We explore in the present work the fine structure of the trajectory of test particle just entering the ``suspension orbit" under the purpose of a detailed investigation of test particle's trajectory in the vicinity of the ``suspension orbit". We end up with a rather puzzling behavior that, contrary to our expectation, the specific angular momen…
Different types of essentially nongeodesic motions of highly relativistic spinning particles in Schwarzschild's and Kerr's background which follows from the Mathisson-Papapetrou (MP) equations are considered. It is shown that dependently on the correlation of signs of the spin and the particle's orbital velocity the spin-gravity coupling acts as a significant repulsive or attractive force. Numerical estimates for electrons, protons, and neutrinos in the gravitational field of black holes are presented. The correspondence between the general relativistic Dirac equation and MP equations is discu…
The Hamiltonian formulation of the motion of a spinning relativistic particle in an external electromagnetic field is considered. The approach is based on the introduction of new coordinates and their conjugated momenta to describe the spin degrees of freedom together with an appropriate set of constraints in the Dirac formulation. For particles with gyromagnetic ratio $g=2$, the equations of motion do not predict any deviation from the standard Lorentz force, while for $g \neq 2$ an additional force, which corresponds to the magnetic dipole force, is obtained.
We construct coherent states of the massless and massive representations of the Poincaré group. They are parameterised by points on the classical state space of spinning particles. Their properties are explored, with special emphasis on the geometrical structures on the state space.
The `classical' model for a massive spinning particle, which was recently proposed, is derived from the isotropic rotator model. Through this derivation, we note that the spin can be understood as the relativistic extension of the isotropic rotator. Furthermore, the variables $t_\m$ corresponding to the $\p^*$ of the `pseudo-classical' model, are necessary for the covariant formulation. The dynamical term for these extra variables is naturally obtained and the meaning of the constraint term $p^\sŁ_{\s\n}+mt_\n =0$, which was recently shown to give `quasi-supersymmetry', is clarified.
Lienard-Wiechert potentials of the relativistic spinning particle with anomalous magnetic moment in pseudoclassical theory are constructed. General expressions for the Lienard-Wiechert potentials are used for investigation of some specific cases of the motion of the spinning particle. In particular the spin dependence of the intensity of the synchrotron radiation of the transversely polarized particle performing uniform circular motion is considered. When the movement of the particle in external homogeneous magnetic field the obtained formulae coincide with those known from quantum theory of r…
The effects of highly relativistic spin-gravity coupling in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter background which follow from the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are investigated. The dependence of gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic components of gravitational field on the velocity of an observer which is moving in Schwarzschild-de Sitter's background is estimated. The action of gravitomagnetic components on a fast moving spinning particle is considered. Different cases of the highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinning particle which essentially differ from the corresponding geodesic orbits are …
In the semiclassical approximation of Grassmann-valued electric charges for regularizing Coulomb self-energies, we extract the unique acceleration-independent interaction hidden in any Lienard-Wiechert solution for the system of N positive-energy spinning particles plus the electromagnetic field in the radiation gauge of the rest-frame instant form. With the help of a semiclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, this allows us to find the relativistic semiclassical Darwin potential. In the 2-body case the quantization of the lowest order reproduces exactly the results from the reduction of t…
In this work we show that a relativistic spinning particle can be described at the classical and the quantum level as being composed of two physical constituents which are entangled and separated by a fixed distance. This bilocal model for spinning particles allows for a natural description of particle interactions as a local interaction at each of the constituents. This form of the interaction vertex provides a resolution to a long standing issue on the nature of relativistic interactions for spinning objects in the context of the worldline formalism. It also potentially brings a dynamical ex…
Using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations, we investigate the trajectories of a spinning particle starting near $r_{ph}^{(-)}$ in a Kerr field and moving with the velocity close to the velocity of light ($r_{ph}^{(-)}$ is the Boyer-Lindquist radial coordinate of the counter-rotation circular photon orbits). First, as a partial case of these trajectories, we consider the equatorial circular orbit with $r=r_{ph}^{(-)}$. This orbit is described by the solution that is common for the rigorous MPD equations and their linear spin approximation. Then different cases of the nonequatorial mo…
We develop a consistent relativistic generalization of collective coordinate quantization of field theory solitons. Our principle of introducing collective coordinates is that the equations of motion of the collective coordinates ensure those of the original field theory. We illustrate this principle with the quantization of spinning degrees of freedom of Skyrmion representing baryons. We calculate the leading relativistic corrections to the static properties of nucleons, and find that the corrections are non-negligible ones of 10% to 20%.
We consider constructing the relativistic system of collective coordinates of a field theory soliton on the basis of a simple principle: The collective coordinates must be introduced into the static solution in such a way that the equation of motion of the collective coordinates ensures that of the original field theory. As an illustration, we apply this principle to the quantization of spinning motion of the Skyrmion by incorporating the leading relativistic correction to the rigid body approximation. We calculate the decay constant and various static properties of nucleons, and find that the…
A $q$-deformed free spinning relativistic particle is discussed in the framework of the Lagrangian formalism. Three equivalent Lagrangians are obtained for this system which are endowed with $q$-deformed local (super)gauge symmetries and reparametrization invariance. It is demonstrated that these symmetries are on-shell equivalent only for $ q = \pm1 $ under particular identification of the transformation parameters. The same condition ($ q=\pm1 $) emerges due to the requirement that the $q$-commutator of two supersymmetric gauge transformations should generate a reparametrization plus a super…
A theoretical study of some electrodynamic features of a region close to a {\it slowly-rotating} magnetized relativistic star is performed. To be a little more specific, based on the solution-generating method given by Wald, the magnetic fields around both uncharged and (slightly) charged relativistic stars have been obtained. Particularly for a charged relativistic star, again following the argument by Wald, the star was shown to gradually accrete charge until it reached an equilibrium value $\tilde{Q}=2B_{0}J$. This value of the equilibrium charge seems to be generic as a rotating black hole…
The relativistic spinning particle model, proposed in [3,4], is analyzed in a Hamiltonian framework. The spin is simulated by extending the configuration space by introducing a light-like four vector degree of freedom. The model is heavily constrained and constraint analysis, in the Dirac scheme, is both novel and instructive. Our major finding is an associated novel non-commutative structure in the extended space. This is obtained in a particular gauge. The model possesses a large gauge freedom and hence a judicious choice of gauge becomes imperative. The gauge fixed system in reduced phase s…
We develop a general formalism for computing classical observables for relativistic scattering of spinning particles, directly from on-shell amplitudes. We then apply this formalism to minimally coupled Einstein-gravity amplitudes for the scattering of massive spin 1/2 and spin 1 particles with a massive scalar, constructed using the double copy. In doing so we reproduce recent results at first post-Minkowskian order for the scattering of spinning black holes, through quadrupolar order in the spin-multipole expansion.
The Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type of restriction emerges in the description of a free spinning relativistic particle within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism when the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for this system are derived from the application of horizontality condition (HC) and its supersymmetric generalization (SUSY-HC) within the framework of superfield formalism. We show that the above CF-condition, which turns out to be the secondary constraint of our present theory, remains time-evolution invariant within the f…
In this paper we have considered the dynamics of an anomalous ($g\neq 2$) charged relativistic spinning particle in the presence of an external electromagnetic field. The constraint analysis is done and the complete set of Dirac brackets are provided that generate the canonical Lorentz algebra and dynamics through Hamiltonian equations of motion. The spin-induced effective curvature of spacetime and its possible connection with Analogue Gravity models are commented upon.
We develop the general theory of spinning particles with electric and magnetic dipole moments moving in arbitrary electromagnetic, inertial and gravitational fields. Both the quantum-mechanical and classical dynamics is investigated. We start from the covariant Dirac equation extended to a spin-${\frac 12}$ fermion with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments and then perform the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. This transformation allows us to obtain the quantum-mechanical equations of motion for the physical operators in the Schrödinger form and to establish the classical…
The pseudoclassical hamiltonian and action of the $D=2n$ dimensional Dirac particle with anomalous magnetic moment interacting with the external Yang-Mills field are found. The Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation of motion for the Pauli-Lubanski vector is deduced. The canonical quantization of $D=2n$ dimensional Dirac spinning particle with anomalous magnetic moment in the external Yang-Mills field is carried out in the gauge which allows to describe simultaneously particles and antiparticles (massive and massless) already at the classical level. Pseudoclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is…
A model of relativistic extended particle is considered with the help of generalization of space-time inter-val. Ten additional dimensions are connected with six rotational and four deformational degrees of freedom. An obtained 14-dimensional space is assumed to be an embedding one both for usual space-time and for 10-dimensional internal space of rotational and deformational variables. To describe such an internal space relativistic generaliza-tions of inertia and deformation tensors are given. Independence of internal and external motions from each other gives rise to splitting the equation …
We construct the relativistic particle model without Grassmann variables which meets the following requirements. A) Canonical quantization of the model implies the Dirac equation. B) The variable which experiences {\it Zitterbewegung}, represents a gauge non-invariant variable in our model. Hence our particle does not experiences the undesirable {\it Zitterbewegung}. C) In the nonrelativistic limit spin is described by three-vector, as it could be expected.
Relativistic non-Abelian spinning fluids can be formulated in group theory language, where the corresponding Mathisson-Papapetrou equation for spinning fluids can be obtained in terms of a specific de Sitter group contraction. This framework is very suitable for studying the effects of a spinning fluid of matter with vorticity and a spin density in a cosmological background.
We review the recent results on development of vector models of spin and apply them to study the influence of spin-field interaction on the trajectory and precession of a spinning particle in external gravitational and electromagnetic fields. The formalism is developed starting from the Lagrangian variational problem, which implies both equations of motion and constraints which should be presented in a model of spinning particle. We present a detailed analysis of the resulting theory and show that it has reasonable properties on both classical and quantum level. We describe a number of applica…
The article is a natural continuation of the papers by Gavrilov and Gitman (Class.Quant.Grav. {\bf 17} (2000) L133; Int. J. Mod. Phys. A15 (2000) 4499) devoted to relativistic particle quantization. Here we generalize the problem, considering the quantization of a spinning particle in arbitrary gravitational background. The nontriviality of such a generalization is related to the neccessity of solving complicated ordering problems. Similar to the flat space-time case, we show in the course of the canonical quantization how a consistent relativistic quantum mechanics of spinning particle in gra…
The local, covariant, continuous, anticommuting and nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for all the fields of a (0 + 1)-dimensional spinning relativistic particle are obtained in the framework of augmented superfield approach to BRST formalism. The trajectory of this super-particle is parametrized by a monotonically increasing parameter τthat is embedded in a D-dimensional flat Minkowski spacetime manifold. This physically useful one-dimensional system is considered on a three (1 + 2)-dimensional supermanifold which is parametrized by an even eleme…
Space-time symmetries are a crucial ingredient of any theoretical model in physics. Unlike internal symmetries, which may or may not be gauged and/or spontaneously broken, space-time symmetries do not admit any ambiguity: they are gauged by gravity, and any conceivable physical system (other than the vacuum) is bound to break at least some of them. Motivated by this observation, we study how to couple gravity with the Goldstone fields that non-linearly realize spontaneously broken space-time symmetries. This can be done in complete generality by weakly gauging the Poincare symmetry group in th…
For the newly proposed coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians for the supersymmetric (SUSY) system of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional spinning relativistic particle, we derive the Noether conserved charges corresponding to its (super)gauge, Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST), anti-BRST and ghost-scale symmetry transformations. We deduce the underlying algebra amongst the continuous symmetry operators and corresponding conserved charges. We point out a novel observation that emerges, for this specific SUSY system, when we discuss it within the framework of BRST formalism. In particular, the requirement o…
We propose classical equations of motion for a charged particle with magnetic moment, taking radiation reaction into account. This generalizes the Landau-Lifshitz equations for the spinless case. In the special case of spin-polarized motion in a constant magnetic field (synchrotron motion) we verify that the particle does lose energy. Previous proposals did not predict dissipation of energy and also suffered from runaway solutions analogous to those of the Lorentz-Dirac equations of motion.
We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for a supersymmetric system of a free spinning relativistic particle within the framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. A novel feature of our present investigation is the consistent and clear supersymmetric modification of the celebrated horizontality condition for the precise determination of the proper (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for all the bosonic and fermionic dynamical variables of our theory which is considered on a (1, 2)-dimension…
Following the idea of Alekseev and Shatashvili we derive the path integral quantization of a modified relativistic particle action that results in the Feynman propagator of a free field with arbitrary spin. This propagator can be associated with the Duffin, Kemmer, and Petiau (DKP) form of a free field theory. We show explicitly that the obtained DKP propagator is equivalent to the standard one, for spins 0 and 1. We argue that this equivalence holds also for higher spins.

We consider a possibility to describe spin one-half and higher spins of massive relativistic particles by means of commuting spinors. We present two classical gauge models with the variables $x^μ,ξ_α,χ_α$, where $ξ,χ$ are commuting Majorana spinors. In course of quantization both models reproduce Dirac equation. We analyze the possibility to introduce an interaction with an external electromagnetic background into the models and to generalize them to higher spin description. The first model admits a minimal interaction with the external electromagnetic field, but leads to reducible representat…
In this manuscript, we study the relativistic quantum mechanics of an electron in external fields in the spinning cosmic string spacetime. We obtain the Dirac equation, write the first and second-order equations from it, and then we solve these equations for bound states. We show that there are bound states solutions for the first-order equation Dirac. For the second-order equation, we show that its wave functions are given in terms of the Kummer functions and we determine the energies of the particle. We examine the behavior of the energies as a function of the physical parameters of the mode…
We introduce a covariant Multipole Expansion for the scattering of a massive particle emitting photons or gravitons in $D$ dimensions. We find that these amplitudes exhibit very powerful features such as universality, soft exponentiation, orbit and spin multipoles, etc. Using ${\rm{SO}}(D)$ representation theory we show that the photon and graviton amplitudes are related via a new double copy procedure for massive spinning states. All these features are then promoted to properties of the observables arising in the classical version of such theories. Focusing on radiation, we provide two main a…
We give an argument that a broad class of geometric models of spinning relativistic particles with Casimir mass and spin being separately fixed parameters, have indeterminate worldline (while other spinning particles have definite worldline). This paradox suggests that for a consistent description of spinning particles something more general than a worldline concept should be used. As a particular case, we study at the Lagrangian level the Cauchy problem for a spinor particle and then, at the constrained Hamiltonian level, we generalize our result to other particles.
We use the vector model of spinning particle to analyze the influence of spin-field coupling on the particle's trajectory in ultra-relativistic regime. The Lagrangian with minimal spin-gravity interaction yields the equations equivalent to the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew-Dixon (MPTD) equations of a rotating body. We show that they have unsatisfactory behavior in the ultra-relativistic limit. In particular, three-dimensional acceleration of the particle increases with velocity and becomes infinite in the ultra-relativistic limit. The reason is that in the equation for trajectory emerges the …
We discuss the continuous and infinitesimal gauge, supergauge, reparameterization, nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries and derive corresponding nilpotent charges for the one (0+1)-dimensional (1D) massive model of a spinning relativistic particle. We exploit the theoretical potential and power of the BRST and supervariable approaches to derive the (anti-)BRST symmetries and coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians for this system. In particular, we capture the off-shell nilpotency and absolute anticommutatvity of the conserved (anti-)BRST charges within the framewor…
We discuss the relativistic top theory from the point of view of the de Sitter (or anti de Sitter) group. Our treatment rests on Hanson-Regge's spherical relativistic top lagrangian formulation. We propose an alternative method for studying spinning objects via Kaluza-Klein theory. In particular, we derive the relativistic top equations of motion starting with the geodesic equation for a point particle in 4+N dimensions. We compare our approach with the Fukuyama's formulation of spinning objects, which is also based on Kaluza-Klein theory. We also report a generalization of our approach to a 4…
