We study universality of Lipschitz quotients. First, we modify a construction of Johnson, Lindenstrauss, Preiss and Schechtman to obtain a complete separable metric space that has every complete separable metric space as a Lipschitz quotient.
Our main result is in the compact setting, where we prove that no such universal metric space can exist. We deduce this impossibility result by studying the curve-flat index, an ordinal index which provides a measure of the complexity of the curve-fragment structure in a metric space. We show that Lipschitz quotients cannot increase this index in compact domains; while there exist compact spaces with arbitrarily high countable curve-flat index. The main technical part of the paper is dedicated to proving a strong version of the latter fact: for every ordinal $α$ and every compact metric space $M$, there exists a compact metric space $N$ such that the curve-flat quotient of $N$ of order $α$ is almost-isometric to $M$.
In this paper we provide several \emph{metric universality} results. We exhibit for certain classes $\cC$ of metric spaces, families of metric spaces $(M_i, d_i)_{i\in I}$ which have the property that a metric space $(X,d_X)$ in $\cC$ is coarsely, resp. Lipschitzly, universal for all spaces in $\cC$ if the collection of spaces $(M_i,d_i)_{i\in I}$ equi-coarsely, respectively equi-Lipschitzly, embeds into $(X,d_X)$. Such families are built as certain Schreier-type metric subsets of $\co$. We deduce a metric analog to Bourgain's theorem, which generalized Szlenk's theorem, and prove that a space…
Le Donne and the author introduced the so-called intrinsically Lipschitz sections of a fixed quotient map $π$ in the context of metric spaces. Moreover, the author introduced the concept of intrinsic Cheeger energy when the quotient map is also linear. In this note we investigate about the non linearity of $π$. In particular, we find a Leibniz formula for the intrinsic slope when $π$ satisfies a weaker condition. After that, we focus our attention on Carnot groups and using the properties of intrinsic dilations we show that the dilation of a Lipschitz section is so too. Finally, in Carnot grou…

We say that a finite metric space $X$ can be embedded almost isometrically into a class of metric spaces $C$, if for every $ε> 0$ there exists an embedding of $X$ into one of the elements of $C$ with the bi-Lipschitz distortion less then $1 + ε$. We show that almost isometric embeddability conditions are equal for following classes of spaces (a) Quotients of Euclidean spaces by isometric actions of finite groups, (b) $L_2$-Wasserstein spaces over Euclidean spaces, (c) Compact flat manifolds, (d) Compact flat orbifolds, (e) Quotients of connected compact bi-invariant Lie groups by isometric act…
The present paper deals with some structural properties of transportation cost spaces, also known as Arens-Eells spaces, Lipschitz-free spaces and Wasserstein spaces. The main results of this work are: (1) A necessary and sufficient condition on an infinite metric space $M$, under which the transportation cost space on $M$ contains an isometric copy of $\ell_1$. The obtained condition is applied to answer the open questions asked by Cúth and Johanis (2017) concerning several specific metric spaces. (2) The description of the transportation cost space of a weighted finite graph $G$ as the quoti…
We discuss a new pseudometric on the space of all norms on a finite-dimensional vector space (or free module) $\mathbb{F}^k$, with $\mathbb{F}$ the real, complex, or quaternion numbers. This metric arises from the Lipschitz-equivalence of all norms on $\mathbb{F}^k$, and seems to be unexplored in the literature. We initiate the study of the associated quotient metric space, and show that it is complete, connected, and non-compact. In particular, the new topology is strictly coarser than that of the Banach-Mazur compactum. For example, for each $k \geqslant 2$ the metric subspace $\{ \| \cdot \…
The paper is devoted to isometric Banach-space-theoretical structure of transportation cost (TC) spaces on finite metric spaces. The TC spaces are also known as Arens-Eells, Lipschitz-free, or Wasserstein spaces. A new notion of a roadmap pertinent to a transportation problem on a finite metric space has been introduced and used to simplify proofs for the results on representation of TC spaces as quotients of $\ell_1$ spaces on the edge set over the cycle space. A Tolstoi-type theorem for roadmaps is proved, and directed subgraphs of the canonical graphs, which are supports of maximal optimal …
We construct a canonical differential structure on the configuration space $Υ$ over a singular base space $X$ and with a general invariant measure $μ$ on $Υ$. We present an analytic structure on $Υ$, constructing a strongly local Dirichlet form $\mathcal E$ on $L^2(Υ, μ)$ for $μ$ in a large class of probability measures. We then investigate the geometric structure of the extended metric measure space $Υ$ endowed with the $L^2$-transportation extended distance $\mathsf{d}_Υ$ and with the measure $μ$. By establishing Rademacher- and Sobolev-to-Lipschitz-type properties for $\mathcal E$, we final…
