Few-Shot Action Recognition (FS-AR) has shown promising results but is often limited by a closed-set assumption that fails in real-world open-set scenarios. While Few-Shot Open-Set (FSOS) recognition is well-established for images, its extension to spatio-temporal video data remains underexplored. To address this, we propose an architectural extension based on a Feature-Residual Discriminator (FR-Disc), adapting previous work on skeletal data to the more complex video domain. Extensive experiments on five datasets demonstrate that while common open-set techniques provide only marginal gains, our FR-Disc significantly enhances unknown rejection capabilities without compromising closed-set accuracy, setting a new state-of-the-art for FSOS-AR. The project website, code, and benchmark are available at: https://hsp-iit.github.io/fsosar/.
Current video representations heavily rely on learning from manually annotated video datasets which are time-consuming and expensive to acquire. We observe videos are naturally accompanied by abundant text information such as YouTube titles and Instagram captions. In this paper, we leverage this visual-textual connection to learn spatiotemporal features in an efficient weakly-supervised manner. We present a general cross-modal pair discrimination (CPD) framework to capture this correlation between a video and its associated text. Specifically, we adopt noise-contrastive estimation to tackle th…

Object detection has achieved substantial progress in the last decade. However, detecting novel classes with only few samples remains challenging, since deep learning under low data regime usually leads to a degraded feature space. Existing works employ a holistic fine-tuning paradigm to tackle this problem, where the model is first pre-trained on all base classes with abundant samples, and then it is used to carve the novel class feature space. Nonetheless, this paradigm is still imperfect. Durning fine-tuning, a novel class may implicitly leverage the knowledge of multiple base classes to co…

Pixel-level semantic segmentation is a challenging task with a huge amount of computation, especially if the size of input is large. In the segmentation model, apart from the feature extraction, the extra decoder structure is often employed to recover spatial information. In this paper, we put forward a method for single-shot segmentation in a feature residual pyramid network (RPNet), which learns the main and residuals of segmentation by decomposing the label at different levels of residual blocks. Specifically speaking, we use the residual features to learn the edges and details, and the ide…

Recently, many zero-shot learning (ZSL) methods focused on learning discriminative object features in an embedding feature space, however, the distributions of the unseen-class features learned by these methods are prone to be partly overlapped, resulting in inaccurate object recognition. Addressing this problem, we propose a novel adversarial network to synthesize compact semantic visual features for ZSL, consisting of a residual generator, a prototype predictor, and a discriminator. The residual generator is to generate the visual feature residual, which is integrated with a visual prototype…

Purpose: An end-to-end deep convolutional neural network (CNN) based on deep residual network (ResNet) was proposed to efficiently reconstruct reliable T2 mapping from single-shot OverLapping-Echo Detachment (OLED) planar imaging. Methods: The training dataset was obtained from simulations carried out on SPROM software developed by our group. The relationship between the original OLED image containing two echo signals and the corresponded T2 mapping was learned by ResNet training. After the ResNet was trained, it was applied to reconstruct the T2 mapping from simulation and in vivo human brain…

State-of-the-art (SoTA) models have improved the accuracy of object detection with a large margin via a FP (feature pyramid). FP is a top-down aggregation to collect semantically strong features to improve scale invariance in both two-stage and one-stage detectors. However, this top-down pathway cannot preserve accurate object positions due to the shift-effect of pooling. Thus, the advantage of FP to improve detection accuracy will disappear when more layers are used. The original FP lacks a bottom-up pathway to offset the lost information from lower-layer feature maps. It performs well in lar…
Deep neural networks achieve unprecedented performance levels over many tasks and scale well with large quantities of data, but performance in the low-data regime and tasks like one shot learning still lags behind. While recent work suggests many hypotheses from better optimization to more complicated network structures, in this work we hypothesize that having a learnable and more expressive similarity objective is an essential missing component. Towards overcoming that, we propose a network design inspired by deep residual networks that allows the efficient computation of this more expressive…

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to recognize unseen classes accurately by learning seen classes and known attributes, but correlations in attributes were ignored by previous study which lead to classification results confused. To solve this problem, we build an Attribute Correlation Potential Space Generation (ACPSG) model which uses a graph convolution network and attribute correlation to generate a more discriminating potential space. Combining potential discrimination space and user-defined attribute space, we can better classify unseen classes. Our approach outperforms some existing state-of…

Human beings can recognize new objects with only a few labeled examples, however, few-shot learning remains a challenging problem for machine learning systems. Most previous algorithms in few-shot learning only utilize spatial information of the images. In this paper, we propose to integrate the frequency information into the learning model to boost the discrimination ability of the system. We employ Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT) to generate the frequency representation, then, integrate the features from both the spatial domain and frequency domain for classification. The proposed strat…

The task of Few-shot learning (FSL) aims to transfer the knowledge learned from base categories with sufficient labelled data to novel categories with scarce known information. It is currently an important research question and has great practical values in the real-world applications. Despite extensive previous efforts are made on few-shot learning tasks, we emphasize that most existing methods did not take into account the distributional shift caused by sample selection bias in the FSL scenario. Such a selection bias can induce spurious correlation between the semantic causal features, that …

Recent studies indicate that deep learning plays a crucial role in the automated visual inspection of road infrastructures. However, current learning schemes are static, implying no dynamic adaptation to users' feedback. To address this drawback, we present a few-shot learning paradigm for the automated segmentation of road cracks, which is based on a U-Net architecture with recurrent residual and attention modules (R2AU-Net). The retraining strategy dynamically fine-tunes the weights of the U-Net as a few new rectified samples are being fed into the classifier. Extensive experiments show that…

State of the art (SOTA) few-shot learning (FSL) methods suffer significant performance drop in the presence of domain differences between source and target datasets. The strong discrimination ability on the source dataset does not necessarily translate to high classification accuracy on the target dataset. In this work, we address this cross-domain few-shot learning (CDFSL) problem by boosting the generalization capability of the model. Specifically, we teach the model to capture broader variations of the feature distributions with a novel noise-enhanced supervised autoencoder (NSAE). NSAE tra…
Diabetic retinopathy(DR) is the main cause of blindness in diabetic patients. However, DR can easily delay the occurrence of blindness through the diagnosis of the fundus. In view of the reality, it is difficult to collect a large amount of diabetic retina data in clinical practice. This paper proposes a few-shot learning model of a deep residual network based on Earth Mover's Distance algorithm to assist in diagnosing DR. We build training and validation classification tasks for few-shot learning based on 39 categories of 1000 sample data, train deep residual networks, and obtain experience m…
Few-shot recognition aims to recognize novel categories under low-data regimes. Some recent few-shot recognition methods introduce auxiliary semantic modality, i.e., category attribute information, into representation learning, which enhances the feature discrimination and improves the recognition performance. Most of these existing methods only consider the attribute information of support set while ignoring the query set, resulting in a potential loss of performance. In this letter, we propose a novel attribute-shaped learning (ASL) framework, which can jointly perform query attributes gener…
In this paper, we propose the $K$-Shot Contrastive Learning (KSCL) of visual features by applying multiple augmentations to investigate the sample variations within individual instances. It aims to combine the advantages of inter-instance discrimination by learning discriminative features to distinguish between different instances, as well as intra-instance variations by matching queries against the variants of augmented samples over instances. Particularly, for each instance, it constructs an instance subspace to model the configuration of how the significant factors of variations in $K$-shot…

The existing Zero-Shot learning (ZSL) methods may suffer from the vague class attributes that are highly overlapped for different classes. Unlike these methods that ignore the discrimination among classes, in this paper, we propose to classify unseen image by rectifying the semantic space guided by the visual space. First, we pre-train a Semantic Rectifying Network (SRN) to rectify semantic space with a semantic loss and a rectifying loss. Then, a Semantic Rectifying Generative Adversarial Network (SR-GAN) is built to generate plausible visual feature of unseen class from both semantic feature…

With the advent of 2-dimensional Convolution Neural Networks (2D CNNs), the face recognition accuracy has reached above 99%. However, face recognition is still a challenge in real world conditions. A video, instead of an image, as an input can be more useful to solve the challenges of face recognition in real world conditions. This is because a video provides more features than an image. However, 2D CNNs cannot take advantage of the temporal features present in the video. We therefore, propose a framework called $Sf_{3}CNN$ for face recognition in videos. The $Sf_{3}CNN$ framework uses 3-dimen…
The main contribution of this paper is an approach for introducing additional context into state-of-the-art general object detection. To achieve this we first combine a state-of-the-art classifier (Residual-101[14]) with a fast detection framework (SSD[18]). We then augment SSD+Residual-101 with deconvolution layers to introduce additional large-scale context in object detection and improve accuracy, especially for small objects, calling our resulting system DSSD for deconvolutional single shot detector. While these two contributions are easily described at a high-level, a naive implementation…

Few-shot learning (FSL) aims to address the data-scarce problem. A standard FSL framework is composed of two components: (1) Pre-train. Employ the base data to generate a CNN-based feature extraction model (FEM). (2) Meta-test. Apply the trained FEM to acquire the novel data's features and recognize them. FSL relies heavily on the design of the FEM. However, various FEMs have distinct emphases. For example, several may focus more attention on the contour information, whereas others may lay particular emphasis on the texture information. The single-head feature is only a one-sided representatio…
In this paper, we explore contrastive learning for few-shot classification, in which we propose to use it as an additional auxiliary training objective acting as a data-dependent regularizer to promote more general and transferable features. In particular, we present a novel attention-based spatial contrastive objective to learn locally discriminative and class-agnostic features. As a result, our approach overcomes some of the limitations of the cross-entropy loss, such as its excessive discrimination towards seen classes, which reduces the transferability of features to unseen classes. With e…
Few-shot learning (FSL), which aims to classify unseen classes with few samples, is challenging due to data scarcity. Although various generative methods have been explored for FSL, the entangled generation process of these methods exacerbates the distribution shift in FSL, thus greatly limiting the quality of generated samples. To these challenges, we propose a novel Information Bottleneck (IB) based Disentangled Generation Framework for FSL, termed as DisGenIB, that can simultaneously guarantee the discrimination and diversity of generated samples. Specifically, we formulate a novel framewor…

Real-world object detection is highly desired to be equipped with the learning expandability that can enlarge its detection classes incrementally. Moreover, such learning from only few annotated training samples further adds the flexibility for the object detector, which is highly expected in many applications such as autonomous driving, robotics, etc. However, such sequential learning scenario with few-shot training samples generally causes catastrophic forgetting and dramatic overfitting. In this paper, to address the above incremental few-shot learning issues, a novel Incremental Few-Shot O…

For domain generalization (DG) and unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA), cross domain feature alignment has been widely explored to pull the feature distributions of different domains in order to learn domain-invariant representations. However, the feature alignment is in general task-ignorant and could result in degradation of the discrimination power of the feature representation and thus hinders the high performance. In this paper, we propose a unified framework termed Feature Alignment and Restoration (FAR) to simultaneously ensure high generalization and discrimination power of the networ…
