Recently, many zero-shot learning (ZSL) methods focused on learning discriminative object features in an embedding feature space, however, the distributions of the unseen-class features learned by these methods are prone to be partly overlapped, resulting in inaccurate object recognition. Addressing this problem, we propose a novel adversarial network to synthesize compact semantic visual features for ZSL, consisting of a residual generator, a prototype predictor, and a discriminator. The residual generator is to generate the visual feature residual, which is integrated with a visual prototype predicted via the prototype predictor for synthesizing the visual feature. The discriminator is to distinguish the synthetic visual features from the real ones extracted from an existing categorization CNN. Since the generated residuals are generally numerically much smaller than the distances among all the prototypes, the distributions of the unseen-class features synthesized by the proposed network are less overlapped. In addition, considering that the visual features from categorization CNNs are generally inconsistent with their semantic features, a simple feature selection strategy is introduced for extracting more compact semantic visual features. Extensive experimental results on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method could achieve a significantly better performance than existing state-of-the-art methods by 1.2-13.2% in most cases.

Few-shot Learning (FSL) methods are being adopted in settings where data is not abundantly available. This is especially seen in medical domains where the annotations are expensive to obtain. Deep Neural Networks have been shown to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This is even more severe in the case of FSL due to the lack of a large number of training examples. In this paper, we provide a framework to make few-shot segmentation models adversarially robust in the medical domain where such attacks can severely impact the decisions made by clinicians who use them. We propose a novel robust …
Many recent few-shot learning methods concentrate on designing novel model architectures. In this paper, we instead show that with a simple backbone convolutional network we can even surpass state-of-the-art classification accuracy. The essential part that contributes to this superior performance is an adversarial feature learning strategy that improves the generalization capability of our model. In this work, adversarial features are those features that can cause the classifier uncertain about its prediction. In order to generate adversarial features, we firstly locate adversarial regions bas…

Pixel-level semantic segmentation is a challenging task with a huge amount of computation, especially if the size of input is large. In the segmentation model, apart from the feature extraction, the extra decoder structure is often employed to recover spatial information. In this paper, we put forward a method for single-shot segmentation in a feature residual pyramid network (RPNet), which learns the main and residuals of segmentation by decomposing the label at different levels of residual blocks. Specifically speaking, we use the residual features to learn the edges and details, and the ide…

Domain adaptation is widely used in learning problems lacking labels. Recent studies show that deep adversarial domain adaptation models can make markable improvements in performance, which include symmetric and asymmetric architectures. However, the former has poor generalization ability whereas the latter is very hard to train. In this paper, we propose a novel adversarial domain adaptation method named Adversarial Residual Transform Networks (ARTNs) to improve the generalization ability, which directly transforms the source features into the space of target features. In this model, residual…
Existing methods based on meta-learning predict novel-class labels for (target domain) testing tasks via meta knowledge learned from (source domain) training tasks of base classes. However, most existing works may fail to generalize to novel classes due to the probably large domain discrepancy across domains. To address this issue, we propose a novel adversarial feature augmentation (AFA) method to bridge the domain gap in few-shot learning. The feature augmentation is designed to simulate distribution variations by maximizing the domain discrepancy. During adversarial training, the domain dis…
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have shown remarkable performance in image synthesis tasks, but typically require a large number of training samples to achieve high-quality synthesis. This paper proposes a simple and effective method, Few-Shot GAN (FSGAN), for adapting GANs in few-shot settings (less than 100 images). FSGAN repurposes component analysis techniques and learns to adapt the singular values of the pre-trained weights while freezing the corresponding singular vectors. This provides a highly expressive parameter space for adaptation while constraining changes to the pretraine…

Machine learning (ML) systems have introduced significant advances in various fields, due to the introduction of highly complex models. Despite their success, it has been shown multiple times that machine learning models are prone to imperceptible perturbations that can severely degrade their accuracy. So far, existing studies have primarily focused on models where supervision across all classes were available. In constrast, Zero-shot Learning (ZSL) and Generalized Zero-shot Learning (GZSL) tasks inherently lack supervision across all classes. In this paper, we present a study aimed on evaluat…

Most existing zero-shot learning methods consider the problem as a visual semantic embedding one. Given the demonstrated capability of Generative Adversarial Networks(GANs) to generate images, we instead leverage GANs to imagine unseen categories from text descriptions and hence recognize novel classes with no examples being seen. Specifically, we propose a simple yet effective generative model that takes as input noisy text descriptions about an unseen class (e.g.Wikipedia articles) and generates synthesized visual features for this class. With added pseudo data, zero-shot learning is natural…
We present a novel generalized zero-shot algorithm to recognize perceived emotions from gestures. Our task is to map gestures to novel emotion categories not encountered in training. We introduce an adversarial, autoencoder-based representation learning that correlates 3D motion-captured gesture sequence with the vectorized representation of the natural-language perceived emotion terms using word2vec embeddings. The language-semantic embedding provides a representation of the emotion label space, and we leverage this underlying distribution to map the gesture-sequences to the appropriate categ…

Generalized zero-shot learning (GZSL) is a challenging class of vision and knowledge transfer problems in which both seen and unseen classes appear during testing. Existing GZSL approaches either suffer from semantic loss and discard discriminative information at the embedding stage, or cannot guarantee the visual-semantic interactions. To address these limitations, we propose the Dual Adversarial Semantics-Consistent Network (DASCN), which learns primal and dual Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in a unified framework for GZSL. In particular, the primal GAN learns to synthesize inter-cla…
Zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR) is a specific cross-modal retrieval task for retrieving natural images with free-hand sketches under zero-shot scenario. Previous works mostly focus on modeling the correspondence between images and sketches or synthesizing image features with sketch features. However, both of them ignore the large intra-class variance of sketches, thus resulting in unsatisfactory retrieval performance. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end semantic adversarial approach for ZS-SBIR. Specifically, we devise a semantic adversarial module to maximize the con…
Few-shot classification aims to recognize unseen classes with few labeled samples from each class. Many meta-learning models for few-shot classification elaborately design various task-shared inductive bias (meta-knowledge) to solve such tasks, and achieve impressive performance. However, when there exists the domain shift between the training tasks and the test tasks, the obtained inductive bias fails to generalize across domains, which degrades the performance of the meta-learning models. In this work, we aim to improve the robustness of the inductive bias through task augmentation. Concrete…

Visual surface inspection is a challenging task owing to the highly diverse appearance of target surfaces and defective regions. Previous attempts heavily rely on vast quantities of training examples with manual annotation. However, in some practical cases, it is difficult to obtain a large number of samples for inspection. To combat it, we propose a hierarchical texture-perceiving generative adversarial network (HTP-GAN) that is learned from the one-shot normal image in an unsupervised scheme. Specifically, the HTP-GAN contains a pyramid of convolutional GANs that can capture the global struc…
This work provides a framework for addressing the problem of supervised domain adaptation with deep models. The main idea is to exploit adversarial learning to learn an embedded subspace that simultaneously maximizes the confusion between two domains while semantically aligning their embedding. The supervised setting becomes attractive especially when there are only a few target data samples that need to be labeled. In this few-shot learning scenario, alignment and separation of semantic probability distributions is difficult because of the lack of data. We found that by carefully designing a …

We propose a novel framework called Semantics-Preserving Adversarial Embedding Network (SP-AEN) for zero-shot visual recognition (ZSL), where test images and their classes are both unseen during training. SP-AEN aims to tackle the inherent problem --- semantic loss --- in the prevailing family of embedding-based ZSL, where some semantics would be discarded during training if they are non-discriminative for training classes, but could become critical for recognizing test classes. Specifically, SP-AEN prevents the semantic loss by introducing an independent visual-to-semantic space embedder whic…

We introduce an adversarial sample detection algorithm based on image residuals, specifically designed to guard against patch-based attacks. The image residual is obtained as the difference between an input image and a denoised version of it, and a discriminator is trained to distinguish between clean and adversarial samples. More precisely, we use a wavelet domain algorithm for denoising images and demonstrate that the obtained residuals act as a digital fingerprint for adversarial attacks. To emulate the limitations of a physical adversary, we evaluate the performance of our approach against…

The existing Zero-Shot learning (ZSL) methods may suffer from the vague class attributes that are highly overlapped for different classes. Unlike these methods that ignore the discrimination among classes, in this paper, we propose to classify unseen image by rectifying the semantic space guided by the visual space. First, we pre-train a Semantic Rectifying Network (SRN) to rectify semantic space with a semantic loss and a rectifying loss. Then, a Semantic Rectifying Generative Adversarial Network (SR-GAN) is built to generate plausible visual feature of unseen class from both semantic feature…
In this paper, we aim to tackle the one-shot person re-identification problem where only one image is labelled for each person, while other images are unlabelled. This task is challenging due to the lack of sufficient labelled training data. To tackle this problem, we propose to iteratively guess pseudo labels for the unlabeled image samples, which are later used to update the re-identification model together with the labelled samples. A new sampling mechanism is designed to select unlabeled samples to pseudo labelled samples based on the distance matrix, and to form a training triplet batch i…

Image-to-image translation models have shown remarkable ability on transferring images among different domains. Most of existing work follows the setting that the source domain and target domain keep the same at training and inference phases, which cannot be generalized to the scenarios for translating an image from an unseen domain to another unseen domain. In this work, we propose the Unsupervised Zero-Shot Image-to-image Translation (UZSIT) problem, which aims to learn a model that can translate samples from image domains that are not observed during training. Accordingly, we propose a fram…

Zero-shot domain adaptation (ZSDA) is a category of domain adaptation problems where neither data sample nor label is available for parameter learning in the target domain. With the hypothesis that the shift between a given pair of domains is shared across tasks, we propose a new method for ZSDA by transferring domain shift from an irrelevant task (IrT) to the task of interest (ToI). Specifically, we first identify an IrT, where dual-domain samples are available, and capture the domain shift with a coupled generative adversarial networks (CoGAN) in this task. Then, we train a CoGAN for the ToI…
In recent years, the trackers based on Siamese networks have emerged as highly effective and efficient for visual object tracking (VOT). While these methods were shown to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks, as most deep networks for visual recognition tasks, the existing attacks for VOT trackers all require perturbing the search region of every input frame to be effective, which comes at a non-negligible cost, considering that VOT is a real-time task. In this paper, we propose a framework to generate a single temporally transferable adversarial perturbation from the object template image onl…
Meta-learning model can quickly adapt to new tasks using few-shot labeled data. However, despite achieving good generalization on few-shot classification tasks, it is still challenging to improve the adversarial robustness of the meta-learning model in few-shot learning. Although adversarial training (AT) methods such as Adversarial Query (AQ) can improve the adversarially robust performance of meta-learning models, AT is still computationally expensive training. On the other hand, meta-learning models trained with AT will drop significant accuracy on the original clean images. This paper prop…

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is to handle the prediction of those unseen classes that have no labeled training data. Recently, generative methods like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are being widely investigated for ZSL due to their high accuracy, generalization capability and so on. However, the side information of classes used now is limited to text descriptions and attribute annotations, which are in short of semantics of the classes. In this paper, we introduce a new generative ZSL method named KG-GAN by incorporating rich semantics in a knowledge graph (KG) into GANs. Specifically, we…

AEEN-HOA consists of two branches, i.e., the upper stream is capable of erasing some initially discovered regions, then the high-order attribute supervision is incorporated to characterize the relationship between the class attributes. Meanwhile, the bottom stream is trained by taking the current background regions to train the same attribute. As far as we know, it is the first time of introducing the erasing operati…

The recent flourish of deep learning in various tasks is largely accredited to the rich and accessible labeled data. Nonetheless, massive supervision remains a luxury for many real applications, boosting great interest in label-scarce techniques such as few-shot learning (FSL), which aims to learn concept of new classes with a few labeled samples. A natural approach to FSL is data augmentation and many recent works have proved the feasibility by proposing various data synthesis models. However, these models fail to well secure the discriminability and diversity of the synthesized data and thus…

In this paper, we introduce a selective zero-shot classification problem: how can the classifier avoid making dubious predictions? Existing attribute-based zero-shot classification methods are shown to work poorly in the selective classification scenario. We argue the under-complete human defined attribute vocabulary accounts for the poor performance. We propose a selective zero-shot classifier based on both the human defined and the automatically discovered residual attributes. Deep metric learning has been widely applied in many computer vision tasks, and recently, it is more attractive in \emph{zero-shot image retrieval and clustering}(ZSRC) where a good embedding is requested such that the unseen classes can be distinguished well. Most existing works deem this 'good' embedding just to be the discriminative one and thus race to devise powerful metric objectives or hard-sample mining strategies for leaning discriminative embedding. However, in this paper, we first emphasize that the generalization ability is a core ingredient of this 'good' embedding as well and lar…
Image super-resolution is one of the important computer vision techniques aiming to reconstruct high-resolution images from corresponding low-resolution ones.
