Constraining stellar models using asteroseismic and spectroscopic observations is a powerful method for precisely determining the fundamental properties of stars in different kinematic components of our galaxy. We use spectroscopy and individual oscillation mode frequencies to perform a homogeneous modeling study of eight evolved metal-poor stars enhanced in $α$-elements. We compare a full treatment of $α$-enhancement against an ad hoc correction to the total metallicity and show that the stellar properties inferred from asteroseismic modeling using both sets of models agree with each other. Additionally, we find that the uncertainties on stellar parameters derived from the both $α$-enhanced modeling methods are comparable. This is in qualitative disagreement with existing works showing red-giant ages constrained by only the global asteroseismic parameters to depend strongly on the opacities and abundances assumed in 1D modeling. We also show that the observed frequency of maximum oscillation power ($ν_{\text{max}}$) is larger than the value predicted from applying the $ν_{\text{max}}$ scaling relation to the masses, radii, and temperatures inferred from the detailed modeling. This discrepancy is pronounced at low metallicities, consistent with recent findings indicating a breakdown of the $ν_{\text{max}}$ scaling relation for metal-poor stars. Understanding the extent to which the $ν_{\text{max}}$ scaling relation fails for low-metallicity solar-like oscillators through detailed modeling will enable more accurate mass and age determinations for hundreds of giant stars in the Galactic Halo for which only global asteroseismic parameters are available.
In this work we combine information from solar-like oscillations, high-resolution spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry to derive stellar ages, chemical abundances and kinematics for a group of seven metal-poor Red Giants and characterise them in a multidimensional chrono-chemo-dynamical space. Chemical abundance ratios were derived through classical spectroscopic analysis employing 1D LTE atmospheres on Keck/HIRES spectra. Stellar ages, masses and radii were calculated with grid-based modelling, taking advantage of availability of asteroseismic information from Kepler. The dynamical properties wer…
Fundamental stellar properties, such as mass, radius, and age, can be inferred using asteroseismology. Cool stars with convective envelopes have turbulent motions that can stochastically drive and damp pulsations. The properties of the oscillation frequency power spectrum can be tied to mass and radius through solar-scaled asteroseismic relations. Stellar properties derived using these scaling relations need verification over a range of metallicities. Because the age and mass of halo stars are well-constrained by astrophysical priors, they provide an independent, empirical check on asteroseism…
Context. Asteroseismology is an effcient tool not only for testing stellar structure and evolutionary theory but also constraining the parameters of stars for which solar-like oscillations are detected, presently. As an important southern asteroseismic target, Tau Ceti, is a metal-poor star. The main features of the oscillations and some frequencies of ? Ceti have been identified. Many scientists propose to comprehensively observe this star as part of the Stellar Observations Network Group. Aims. Our goal is to obtain the optimal model and reliable fundamental parameters for the metal-poor sta…

The differentially rotating outer layers of stars are thought to play a role in driving their magnetic activity, but the underlying mechanisms that generate and sustain differential rotation are poorly understood. We report the measurement of latitudinal differential rotation in the convection zones of 40 Sun-like stars using asteroseismology. For the most significant detections, the stars' equators rotate approximately twice as fast as their mid-latitudes. The latitudinal shear inferred from asteroseismology is much larger than predictions from numerical simulations.
Intrinsically luminous giant stars in the Milky Way are the only potential volume-complete tracers of the distant disk, bulge, and halo. The chemical abundances of metal-poor giants also reflect the compositions of the earliest star-forming regions, providing the initial conditions for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. However, the intrinsic rarity of metal-poor giants combined with the difficulty of efficiently identifying them with broad-band optical photometry has made it difficult to exploit them for studies of the Milky Way. We re-derive a giant star photometric selection using existi…
Asteroseismology and spectroscopy provide complementary constraints on the fundamental and chemical properties of stars. I describe the first results from APOKASC, a collaboration between the Kepler asteroseismic science consortium (KASC) and the SDSS-III APOGEE survey. These include (1) the first test of asteroseismic scaling relationships in the metal-poor regime using halo and thick disk stars identified in the APOKASC sample; and (2) the calibration of spectroscopic parameters using precise asteroseismic measurements of surface gravity. I also highlight future research avenues that are mad…
Among the available methods for dating stars, gyrochronology is a powerful one because it requires knowledge of only the star's mass and rotation period. Gyrochronology relations have previously been calibrated using young clusters, with the Sun providing the only age dependence, and are therefore poorly calibrated at late ages. We used rotation period measurements of 310 Kepler stars with asteroseismic ages, 50 stars from the Hyades and Coma Berenices clusters and 6 field stars (including the Sun) with precise age measurements to calibrate the gyrochronology relation, whilst fully accounting …
HD\,139614 is known to be a $\sim$14-Myr-old, possibly pre-main-sequence star in the Sco-Cen OB association in the Upper Centaurus-Lupus subgroup, with a slightly warped circumstellar disc containing ring structures hinting at one or more planets. The star's chemical abundance pattern is metal-deficient except for volatile elements, which places it in the $λ$ Boo class and suggests it has recently accreted gas-rich but dust-poor material. We identify seven dipole and four radial pulsation modes among its $δ$ Sct pulsations using the TESS light curve and an échelle diagram. Precision modelling …
Robust age estimates of red giant stars are now possible thanks to the precise inference of their mass based on asteroseismic constraints. However, there are cases where such age estimates can be highly precise yet very inaccurate. An example is giants that have undergone mass loss or mass transfer events that have significantly altered their mass. In this context, stars with "apparent" ages significantly higher than the age of the Universe are candidates as stripped stars, or stars that have lost more mass than expected, most likely via interaction with a companion star, or because of the poo…
The present work concerns the Asteroseismology of the Kepler detached eclipsing binary KIC 8504570. Particularly, it focuses on the pulsational behaviour of the oscillating component of this system and the estimation of its physical parameters in order to enrich the so far poor sample of this kind of systems. Using spectroscopic observations, the spectral type of the primary component was determined and used to create accurate light curves models and estimate its absolute parameters. The light curve residuals were subsequently analysed using Fourier transformation techniques to obtain the puls…
A catalogue of asteroseismically calibrated ages for APOGEE DR17. The predictions of a CatBoost machine learning model based on the [Mg/Ce] chemical clock and other stellar parameters
With the observations of an unprecedented number of oscillating subgiant stars expected from NASA's TESS mission, the asteroseismic characterization of subgiant stars will be a vital task for stellar population studies and for testing our theories of stellar evolution. To determine the fundamental properties of a large sample of subgiant stars efficiently, we developed a deep learning method that estimates distributions of fundamental parameters like age and mass over a wide range of input physics by learning from a grid of stellar models varied in eight physical parameters. We applied our met…
Despite the fact that the initial helium abundance is an essential ingredient in modelling solar-type stars, its abundance in these stars remains a poorly constrained observational property. This is because the effective temperature in these stars is not high enough to allow helium ionization, not allowing any conclusions on its abundance when spectroscopic techniques are employed. To this end, stellar modellers resort to estimating the initial helium abundance via a semi-empirical helium-to-heavy element ratio, anchored to the the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis value. Depending on the choi…

We intent to use stellar models with and without alpha-enhancement, as well as asteroseismic analysis, to study two alpha-enhanced stars, KIC 7976303 and KIC 8694723. For the alpha-enhanced models, we adopt [alpha/Fe] = 0.2, and 0.4. For the evolved sub-giant KIC 7976303 with mixed-modes, alpha-enhanced models fit the observations better than the models without alpha-enhancement, and point to a star with M = 1.20 $\pm$ 0.02 M_odot, t = 4.88 $\pm$ 0.08 Gyr, R = 2.04 $\pm$ 0.01 R_odot, and L = 5.07 $\pm$ 0.05 L_odot. For the post turnoff star KIC 8694723, we find that the models fit the observat…
Context. Solar-like oscillations exhibit a regular pattern of frequencies. This pattern is dominated by the small and large frequency separations between modes. The accurate determination of these parameters is of great interest, because they give information about e.g. the evolutionary state and the mass of a star. Aims. We want to develop a robust method to determine the large and small frequency separations for time series with low signal-tonoise ratio. For this purpose, we analyse a time series of the Sun from the GOLF instrument aboard SOHO and a time series of the star KIC 5184732 from t…
Detailed understanding of stellar physics is essential towards a robust determination of stellar properties (e.g. radius, mass, and age). Among the vital input physics used in the modelling of solar-type stars which remain poorly constrained, is the initial helium abundance. To this end, when constructing stellar model grids, the initial helium abundance is estimated either (i) by using the semi-empirical helium-to-heavy element enrichment ratio, (${ΔY}/{ΔZ}$), anchored to the standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis value or (ii) by setting the initial helium abundance as a free variable. Adopting 3…
We present an asteroseismic study of the solar-like stars KIC 11395018, KIC 10273246, KIC 10920273, KIC 10339342, and KIC 11234888 using short-cadence time series of more than eight months from the Kepler satellite. For four of these stars, we derive atmospheric parameters from spectra acquired with the Nordic Optical Telescope. The global seismic quantities (average large frequency separation and frequency of maximum power), combined with the atmospheric parameters, yield the mean density and surface gravity with precisions of 2% and ~0.03 dex, respectively. We also determine the radius, mass…
Theoretical stellar evolution models are constructed and tailored to the best known, observationally derived characteristics of metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\sim-2.3$) stars representing a range of evolutionary phases: subgiant HD140283, globular cluster M92, and four single, main sequence stars with well-determined parallaxes: HIP46120, HIP54639, HIP106924, and WOLF1137. It is found that the use of a solar-calibrated value of the mixing length parameter $α_{\text{MLT}}$ in models of these objects is ineffective at reproducing their observed properties. Empirically calibrated values of $α_{\text{MLT}}$ …
Context: Asteroseismic measurements reveal that an unknown efficient angular momentum (AM) transport mechanism is needed for subgiant and red giant stars. A revised prescription for AM transport by the magnetic Tayler instability has been recently proposed as a possible candidate for such a missing mechanism. Results: The revised prescription for the transport by the Tayler instability leads to low core rotation rates after the main sequence that are in better global agreement with asteroseismic measurements than those predicted by models with purely hydrodynamic processes or with the original…
We present a catalog of stellar properties for a large sample of 6676 evolved stars with APOGEE spectroscopic parameters and \textit{Kepler} asteroseismic data analyzed using five independent techniques. Our data includes evolutionary state, surface gravity, mean density, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them. We employ a new empirical approach for combining asteroseismic measurements from different methods, calibrating the inferred stellar parameters, and estimating uncertainties. With high statistical significance, we find that asteroseis…
Asteroseismic constraints on K giants make it possible to infer radii, masses and ages of tens of thousands of field stars. Tests against independent estimates of these properties are however scarce, especially in the metal-poor regime. Here, we report the detection of solar-like oscillations in 8 stars belonging to the red-giant branch and red-horizontal branch of the globular cluster M4. The detections were made in photometric observations from the K2 Mission during its Campaign 2. Making use of independent constraints on the distance, we estimate masses of the 8 stars by utilising different…
Stellar magnetic fields are poorly understood but are known to be important for stellar evolution and exoplanet habitability. They drive stellar activity, which is the main observational constraint on theoretical models for magnetic field generation and evolution. Starspots are the main manifestation of the magnetic fields at the stellar surface. In this study we measure the variation of their latitude with time, called a butterfly diagram in the solar case, for the solar analogue HD 173701 (KIC 8006161). To that effect, we use Kepler data, to combine starspot rotation rates at different epoch…
Current stellar model predictions of adiabatic oscillation frequencies differ significantly from the corresponding observed frequencies due to the non-adiabatic and poorly understood near-surface layers of stars. However, certain combinations of frequencies -- known as frequency ratios -- are largely unaffected by the uncertain physical processes as they are mostly sensitive to the stellar core. Furthermore, the seismic signature of helium ionization provides envelope properties while being almost independent of the outermost layers. We have developed an advanced stellar modelling approach in …
We compare radii based on ${\it Gaia}$ parallaxes to asteroseismic scaling relation-based radii of $\sim 300$ dwarfs $\&$ subgiants and $\sim 3600$ first-ascent giants from the ${\it Kepler}$ mission. Systematics due to temperature, bolometric correction, extinction, asteroseismic radius, and the spatially-correlated ${\it Gaia}$ parallax zero-point, contribute to a $2\%$ systematic uncertainty on the ${\it Gaia}$-asteroseismic radius agreement. We find that dwarf and giant scaling radii are on a parallactic scale at the $-2.1 \% \pm 0.5 \% {\rm \ (rand.)} \pm 2.0\% {\rm \ (syst.)}$ level (dwa…
We theoretically quantify the impact of observational errors on the recovered age for stars in MS and RGB phases. We adopted Teff, [Fe/H], Delta_nu and nu_max as observational constraints. Artificial stars were sampled from a reference isochrone and subjected to random perturbation to simulate observational errors. Their ages were then recovered by means of a MCMC approach. The differences between the recovered and true ages were modelled against the errors in the observables by means of linear models and projection pursuit regression models. From linear models we find that no age error source…
Based on the two-minutes TESS data, we analyzed intrinsic oscillations of the primary component and identified seven confident independent $δ$ Scuti frequencies ($f_1$, $f_2$, $f_3$, $f_4$, $f_7$, $f_{11}$, and $f_{12}$). Both of single-star evolutionary models and mass-accreting models are computed to reproduce the $δ$ Scuti freqiencies. Fitting results of them match well with each other. The stellar parameters of the primary star yielded by asteroseismology are $M$ = $1.92^{+0.10}_{-0.02}$ $M_{\odot}$, $Z$ = 0.011$^{+0.006}_{-0.001}$, $R$ = $2.068^{+0.050}_{-0.007}$ $R_{\odot}$, $\log g$ = $…
We present our chemical abundance investigation of the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-1.60 dex), r-process-enriched ([Eu/Fe]=0.73 dex) halo star HD 20 using novel and archival high-resolution spectra at outstanding signal-to-noise ratios. By combining one of the first asteroseismic gravity measurements in the metal-poor regime from a TESS light curve with non-LTE analyses of iron lines, we derive a set of highly accurate and precise stellar parameters. These allow us to delineate a chemical pattern comprised of solid detections of 48 elements, including 28 neutron-capture elements, which establishes HD 2…
The currently favored method for estimating radii and other parameters of transiting-planet host stars is to match theoretical models to observations of the stellar mean density rho_*, the effective temperature T_eff, and the composition parameter [Z]. This explicitly model-dependent approach is based on readily-available observations, and results in small formal errors. Here I use two calibration samples of stars (eclipsing binaries and stars for which asteroseismic analyses are available) having well-determined masses and radii to estimate the accuracy and systematic errors inherent in the r…
The Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope observed 184 carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds. This sample reveals that the dust-production rate (DPR) from carbon stars generally increases with the pulsation period of the star. The composition of the dust grains follows two condensation sequences, with more SiC condensing before amorphous carbon in metal-rich stars, and the order reversed in metal-poor stars. MgS dust condenses in optically thicker dust shells, and its condensation is delayed in more metal-poor stars. Metal-poor carbon stars also tend to have stronger absorption …
The Pristine survey -- XXII. A serendipitous discovery of an extremely Li-rich very metal-poor giant and a new method of $^6$Li/$^7$Li isotope measurement
The presence of 6Li in the atmospheres of metal-poor halo stars is usually inferred from the detection of a subtle extra depression in the red wing of the 7Li doublet line at 670.8 nm. However, the intrinsic line asymmetry caused by convective flows in the photospheres of cool stars is almost indistinguishable from the asymmetry produced by a weak 6Li blend on a (presumed) symmetric 7Li profile. Previous determinations of the 6Li/ 7Li isotopic ratio based on 1D model atmospheres, ignoring the convection-induced line asymmetry, must therefore be considered as upper limits. By comparing syntheti…
Un-evolved, very metal-poor stars are the most important tracers of the cosmic abundance of lithium in the early universe. Combining the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis model with Galactic production through cosmic ray spallation, these stars at [Fe/H]<-2 are expected to show an undetectably small 6Li/7Li isotopic signature. Evidence to the contrary may necessitate an additional pre-galactic production source or a revision of the standard model of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We revisit the isotopic analysis of four halo stars, two with claimed 6Li-detections in the literature, to investigate t…
The vast majority of Milky Way stellar halo stars were likely accreted from a small number ($\lesssim$3) of relatively large dwarf galaxy accretion events. However, the timing of these events is poorly constrained, relying predominantly on indirect dynamical mixing arguments or imprecise age measurements of stars associated with debris structures. Here, we aim to infer robust stellar ages for stars associated with galactic substructures to more directly constrain the merger history of the Galaxy. By combining kinematic, asteroseismic, and spectroscopic data where available, we infer stellar ag…
