It is shown that in all types of metallic magnets the coupling of the order parameter to the conduction electrons leads to an order-parameter susceptibility that is long-ranged at zero temperature. This is true for all known classes of ferromagnets, and also for antiferromagnets and spin-density wave systems, helimagnets, magnetic nematics, and altermagnets. The consequences for the magnetic quantum phase transition vary between different classes of magnets. In almost all 3-d systems with a homogeneous magnetization, as well as in magnetic nematics and in altermagnets, the long-ranged correlations generically modify the nature of the magnetic quantum phase transition from second order to first order. The only exception are non-centrosymmetric ferromagnets with a strong spin-orbit interaction, where the correlations change the order of the transition in 2-d systems, but not in 3-d ones. In helimagnets, spin-wave systems, and Neel antiferromagnets their effect is even weaker and does not change the order of the transition if the ordering wave number is sufficiently large, except in flat-band systems. In systems with quenched disorder the transition generically is of second order, but the correlations modify the critical behavior. These conclusions are reached by very simple considerations that are based entirely on the single-particle excitations in the nonmagnetic phase and their modifications by a field conjugate to the order parameter, augmented by renormalization-group considerations.
We study low temperature properties in the metallic magnets, considering the itinerant electron mediated ferromagnetism. Applying the Monte Carlo simulations to the extended double exchange model, we discuss reorientation phase transition and anisotropy field for the metallic magnets.
A Metal-Disordered Mott insulator-Metal heterostructure is studied at half-fiiling using unrestricted Hartree Fock method. The corresponding clean system has been shown to be an insulator for any finite on site correlation. Interestingly we find that introduction of explicit disorder induces a metal-insulator transition at a critical value of disorder. The critical value corresponds to the point at which disorder nullifies the effect of onsite correlation. The wavefunctions are found to delocalize by increasing disorder, rendering the system metallic.
We report on magnetotransport studies of the unusual two-dimensional metallic phase in high mobility Si-MOS structures. We have observed that the magnetic field applied in the 2D plane suppresses the metallic state, causing the resistivity to increase dramatically by more than 30 times. Over the total existence range of the metallic state, we have found three distinct types of the magnetoresistance, related to the corresponding quantum corrections to the conductivity. Our data suggest that the unusual metallic state is a consequence of both spin- and Coulomb-interaction effects.
Motivated by the recent optical and photoemission measurements on half-metallic ferromagnetic three-dimensional manganites, we combine a tight-binding fit of the one-particle bandstructure with the dynamical mean-field theory, which treats the dynamical orbital correlations and the combination of Jahn-Teller and doping-induced disorder on the same footing. We show how all of the above effects are necessary to obtain good semiquantitative agreement with experimental features. As applications, we show how modest external magnetic fields drive drastic changes in the optical spectrum, demonstratin…
We analyze the effects of the on-site Coulomb repulsion U on a band insulator using dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We find the surprising result that the gap is suppressed to zero at a critical Uc1 and remains zero within a metallic phase. At a larger Uc2 there is a second transition from the metal to a Mott insulator, in which the gap increases with increasing U. These results are qualitatively different from Hartree-Fock theory which gives a monotonically decreasing but non-zero insulating gap for all finite U.
New insights into the microscopic origin of itinerant ferromagnetism were recently gained from investigations of electronic lattice models within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In particular, it is now established that even in the one-band Hubbard model metallic ferromagnetism is stable at intermediate values of the interaction U and density n on regular, frustrated lattices. Furthermore, band degeneracy along with Hund's rule couplings is very effective in stabilizing metallic ferromagnetism in a broad range of electron fillings. DMFT also permits one to investigate more complicated corr…
We compare the effects of temperature and parallel magnetic field on the two-dimensional metallic behavior within the unified model of temperature and field dependent effective disorder arising from the screened charged impurity scattering. We find, consistent with experimental observations, that the temperature and field dependence of resistivity should be qualitatively similar in n-Si MOSFET and very different in n-GaAs 2D metallic systems.
The electronic and magnetic properties of Sr$_2$CoO$_4$ compound have been studied using $\emph{ab initio}$ electronic structure calculations. As opposed to GGA calculation, which gives ferromagnetic metallic solution, GGA+$U$ calculations provide two kind of ferromagnetic solutions: (i) half-metallic and (ii) metallic. The half-metallic solution is a ground state of the system and the metallic one is a metastable state. The strong hybridization between Co 3$d$ and O 2$p$ orbitals decides the electronic and magnetic properties of the compound. The total magnetic moment per formula unit is foun…
We consider a heterostructure of a metal and a barrier with onsite correlation at half filling using unrestricted Hartree Fock. We find that above a certain value of correlation strength in the barrier planes, the system is a Mott insulator, while below this value the system still behaves like a gapless insulator. The energy spectrum is found to be very novel with the presence of multiple gaps. Thus the system remains non metallic for any finite value of correlation.
Motivated by recent experiments on the observation of room temperature skyrmions in a layered heterostructure and subsequent demonstration of topological Hall effect in the same system, we have studied a minimal model of itinerant electrons coupled to local moments with competing interactions in an external magnetic field. Working in the limit of strong magneto-electric coupling where the fast dynamics of the electrons can be decoupled from the slow dynamics of the local moments (treated as classical spins), we analyze the multiple field induced magnetic phases and the associated electronic tr…
We propose mechanism for pressure-induced transitions between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases that relies on a competition between characteristic energy scales ubiquitous among $d$-electron metallic magnetic compounds. Principles behind the mechanism are demonstrated on the example of the minimal two-orbital $p$-$d$ lattice model. We suggest that LaCrGe$_3$, where pressure-induced ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition has been recently observed, is a promising candidate to realize discussed mechanism.
LiOsO$_3$ has been recently identified as the first unambiguous "ferroelectric metal", experimentally realizing a prediction from 1965 by Anderson and Blount. In this work, we investigate the metallic state in LiOsO$_3$ by means of infrared spectroscopy supplemented by Density Functional Theory and Dynamical Mean Field Theory calculations. Our measurements and theoretical calculations clearly show that LiOsO$_3$ is a very bad metal with a small quasiparticle weight, close to a Mott-Hubbard localization transition. The agreement between experiments and theory allows us to ascribe all the releva…
We propose a novel interaction-based route to half-metal state for interacting electrons on two-dimensional lattices. Magnetic field applied parallel to the lattice is used to tune one of the spin densities to a particular commensurate with the lattice value in which the system spontaneously `locks in' via van Hove enhanced density wave state. Electrons of opposite spin polarization retain their metallic character and provide for the half-metal state which, in addition, supports magnetization plateau in a finite interval of external magnetic field. Similar half-metal state is realized in the f…
We explore the magnetic phases in a Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice at metallic electron densities, searching for noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures. Motivated by experimental observations in many rare-earth-based frustrated metallic magnets, we treat the local moments as classical spins and set the coupling between the itinerant electrons and local moments as the largest energy scale in the problem. Our results show that a noncollinear flux state is stabilized over an extended range of Hamiltonian parameters. These spin states can be quen…
Using a general analytical continuation scheme for cluster dynamical mean field calculations, we analyze real-frequency self-energies, momentum-resolved spectral functions, and one-particle excitations of the metallic and insulating phases of VO2. While for the former dynamical correlations and lifetime effects prevent a description in terms of quasi-particles, the excitations of the latter allow for an effective band-structure. We construct an orbital-dependent, but static one-particle potential that reproduces the full many-body spectrum. Yet, the ground state is well beyond a static one-par…
We report magnetic, transport, neutron diffraction, and muon spin rotation data showing that Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$, a newly synthesized metallic double-perovskite with a centrosymmetric space group at room temperature, exhibits a continuous second-order phase transition at 45 K to a magnetically ordered state with a non-centrosymmetric space group. The absence of inversion symmetry is very uncommon in metals, particularly metallic oxides. In contrast to the recently reported ferroelectric-like structural transition in LiOsO$_3$, the phase transition in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is driven by a long-range colli…
For the past decades, the low-temperature phase of Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ below the 48K first-order phase transition remains a puzzle with controversial suggestions involving metallic ferroelectric, orbital or magnetic ordering. Through analysis of experimental lattice structure, density functional theory calculation, and effective model analysis, we propose that the 48K phase transition is a bond formation transition promoted by the magnetism mediated orbital re-polarization. Most interestingly, this transition is accompanied by a switch of \textit{two} metallic ferroelectric orders from a $xy+y$ …
The Hall angle in the doped V_2O_3 is discussed on the basis of an extended Ginzburg-Landau theory of spin fluctuations. A spinon-like collective transport process beyond the ordinary quasiparticle transport theory is necessary to understand the experiment. At the same time a criticism of a quasiparticle transport theory on the basis of the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation is made.
The effect of the Hubbard interaction among conduction electrons on the double exchange model is investigated in a ferromagnetic metallic phase. Applying iterative perturbation theory to the Hubbard interaction within dynamical mean field theory, we calculate the one-particle spectral function and the optical conductivity, in which coherent-potential approximation is further used to treat the ferromagnetic Hund coupling between conduction electrons and localized spins. Identifying the decrease of the magnetization for the localized spin with the increase of the temperature, we discuss the temp…
Solid mercury in the rhombohedral structure is unbound within the self-consistent field (Hartree-Fock) approximation. The metallic binding is entirely due to electronic correlations. We determine the cohesive energy of solid mercury within an ab-initio many-body expansion for the correlation part. Electronic correlations in the $5d$ shell contribute about half to the cohesive energy. Relativistic effects are found to be very important. Very good agreement with the experimental value is obtained.
The electronic structure of the VAs compound in the zinc-blende structure is investigated using a combined density-functional and dynamical mean-field theory approach. Contrary to predictions of a ferromagnetic semiconducting ground state obtained by density-functional calculations, dynamical correlations induce a closing of the gap and produce a half-metallic ferromagnetic state. These results emphasize the importance of dynamic correlations in materials suitable for spintronics.
Recent progress in growth and characterization of thin-film VO$_2$ has shown its electronic properties can be significantly modulated by epitaxial matching. To throw new light on the concept of `Mott engineering', we develop a symmetry-consistent approach to treat structural distortions and electronic correlations in epitaxial VO$_2$ films under strain, and compare our design with direct experimental probes. We find strong evidence for the emergence of correlation-driven charge order deep in the metallic phase, and our results indicate that exotic phases of VO$_2$ can be controlled with epitax…
The magneto-optical spectra of NiMnSb were calculated in the framework of the Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA) combined with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). Comparing with results based on plain LSDA, an additional account of many-body correlations via DMFT results in a noticably improved agreement of the theoretical Kerr-rotation and ellipticity spectra with corresponding experimental data.
Electron-electron correlations affect the band gap of half-metallic ferromagnets by introducing non-quasiparticle states just above the Fermi level. In contrast to the spin-orbit coupling, a large asymmetric non-quasiparticle spectral weight is present in the minority-spin channel, leading to a peculiar finite-temperature spin depolarization effects. Using recently developed first-principle dynamical mean field theory, we investigate these effects for the half-metallic ferrimagnetic Heusler compound FeMnSb. We discuss depolarization effects in terms of strength of local Coulomb interaction $U$…
Using magnetoresistance measurements as a function of applied magnetic field and its direction of application, we present sharp angular-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations for the electron-doped cuprates in their low-temperature non-metallic regime. The presence of irreversibility in the magnetoresistance measurements and the related strong anisotropy of the field dependence for different in-plane magnetic field orientations indicate that magnetic domains play an important role for the determination of electronic properties. These domains are likely related to the stripe phase reported pr…
The role of electronic Coulomb correlations in iron-based superconductors is an important open question. We provide theoretical evidence for strong correlation effects in the FeSe compound, based on dynamical mean field calculations. A lower Hubbard band is found in the spectral properties. Moreover, together with significant orbital-dependent mass enhancements, we find that the normal state is a bad metal over an extended temperature range, implying a non-Fermi liquid. Predictions for angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy are made.
The temperature dependence of conductivity $σ(T)$ in the metallic phase of a two-dimensional electron system in silicon has been studied for different concentrations of local magnetic moments. The local moments have been induced by disorder, and their number was varied using substrate bias. The data suggest that in the limit of $T\to 0$ the metallic behavior, as characterized by $dσ/dT < 0$, is suppressed by an arbitrarily small amount of scattering by local magnetic moments.
A comparative study on as cast and annealed rare earth bulk metallic glass (BMG) with composition Tb36Sm20Al24Co20 has been carried out by magnetization measurements. The as cast amorphous sample shows non-ergodic magnetization but does not show the behavior expected from magnetic glass. After annealing, the partially crystallized BMG shows this magnetic glass behavior. This is confirmed by the established measurement protocol of cooling and heating in unequal fields (CHUF).
The influence of Coulomb correlation on magnetic and spectral properties in metallic rutile phase of vanadium dioxide is studied by state of the art LDA+DMFT method. Calculation results in strongly correlated metallic state with an effective mass renormalization $m^*/m\approx2$. Uniform magnetic susceptibility shows Curie-Weiss temperature dependence with effective magnetic moment, $p_{eff}^{theor} = 1.54 μ_B$, in a good agreement with the experimental value $p_{eff}^{exp} = 1.53 μ_B$ that is close to ideal value for V$^{4+}$ ion with the spin $S=1/2$, $p_{eff} = 1.73 μ_B$. Calculated spectral…
We have successfully grown cm3-size single crystals of the metallic-ferromagnet Sm2Mo2O7 by the floating-zone method using an infrared-red image furnace. The growth difficulties and the remedies found using a 2-mirror image furnace are discussed. Magnetization studies along the three crystalline axes of the compound are presented and discussed based on our recent proposal of an ordered spin-ice ground state for this compound
We consider the effect of electron-electron interactions on the current-in-plane (CIP) conductivity and exchange coupling energy of a disordered metallic magnetic multilayer. We analyze its dependence on the value of ferromagnetic splitting of conducting electrons and ferromagnetic layers relative magnetizations orientation. We show that contribution to the CIP conductivity and exchange coupling energy as a periodic function of the angle of magnetizations relative orientation experience $ 2π\to π$ transition depending on the characteristic energies: ferromagnetic splitting of the conducting el…
Atomic nuclei and nano-scale metallic grains are in the crossover regime of pairing correlations between the bulk limit, where the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity is valid, and the fluctuation-dominated regime, where BCS theory breaks down. In this fluctuation-dominated regime, the pairing gap is comparable to or smaller than the single-particle mean level spacing. We discuss thermal signatures of pairing correlations in nuclei and ultra-small metallic grains that survive despite the large fluctuations of the pairing field.

We report on giant positive magnetoresistance effect observed in VOx thin films, epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 substrate. The MR effect depends strongly on temperature and oxygen content and is anisotropic. At low temperatures its magnitude reaches 70% in a magnetic field of 5 T. Strong electron-electron interactions in the presence of strong disorder may qualitatively explain the results. An alternative explanation, related to a possible magnetic instability, is also discussed.
Understanding the effects of electron-electron interactions in half metallic magnets (HMs), which have band structures with one gapped spin channel and one metallic channel, poses fundamental theoretical issues as well as having importance for their potential applications. Here we use determinant quantum Monte Carlo to study the impacts of an on-site Hubbard interaction $U$, finite temperature, and an external (Zeeman) magnetic field on a bilayer tight-binding model which is a half-metal in the absence of interactions, by calculating the spectral density, conductivity, spin polarization of car…
We investigate the dynamical superlattice correlation in the two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model on the basis of the unrestricted fluctuation exchange approximation. We calculate the one-particle spectral function, the spin correlation function and the charge correlation function at finite temperature. We find that some experimental results can be reproduced consistenly by taking inhomogenous distribution of Cu 3d electrons into account. The correlation functions suggest that several kinds of instabilities with spatial inhomogenieties exist in some regions, where these instabilities signi…
A systematic first-principles study has been performed to understand the magnetism of thin film SrRuO$_3$ which lots of research efforts have been devoted to but no clear consensus has been reached about its ground state properties. The relative t$_{2g}$ level difference, lattice distortion as well as the layer thickness play together in determining the spin order. In particular, it is important to understand the difference between two standard approximations, namely LDA and GGA, in describing this metallic magnetism. Landau free energy analysis and the magnetization-energy-ratio plot clearly …
A well-known connection between the magnetic susceptibility and the effective exchange parameter is analyzed. It is shown that all current computational schemes use a long-wave approximation which is suitable only for localized moments systems. A corresponding smallness parameter is derived in real and recipical space. General 'inverse susceptibility' approach is combined with a multiple scattering theory and applied for the studies of elementary metals Fe, Ni and Gd. It is shown that the proposed approach significantly improves the description of the exchange coupling between nearest atoms, t…
We have studied the magnetic and transport properties of an ultra-low-resistivity two-dimensional electron system in a Si/SiGe quantum well. The spin polarization increases linearly with the in-plane magnetic field and the enhancement of the spin susceptibility is consistent with that in Si-MOS structures. Temperature dependence of resistivity remains metallic even in strong magnetic fields where the spin degree of freedom is frozen out. We also found a magnetoresistance anisotropy with respect to an angle between the current and the in-plane magnetic field.
We study the mesoscopic fluctuations of thermodynamic observables in a nanosized metallic grain in which the single-particle dynamics are chaotic and the dimensionless Thouless conductance is large. Such a grain is modeled by the universal Hamiltonian describing the competition between exchange and pairing correlations. The exchange term is taken into account exactly by a spin-projection method, and the pairing term is treated in the static-path approximation together with small-amplitude quantal fluctuations around each static fluctuation of the pairing field. Odd-even particle-number effects…
Strongly correlated phases of matter are often described in terms of straightforward electronic patterns. This has so far been the basis for studying the Fermi-Hubbard model realized with ultracold atoms. Here, we show that artificial intelligence (AI) can provide an unbiased alternative to this paradigm for phases with subtle, or even unknown, patterns. Long- and short-range spin correlations spontaneously emerge in filters of a convolutional neural network trained on snapshots of single atomic species. In the less well-understood strange metallic phase of the model, we find that a more compl…
