Since the curve $y^2 = x^6+1$ has a large automorphism group, there exist twist families arising from non-hyperelliptic directions. In this paper, we give an explicit upper bound on the average analytic rank of such a family, assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis for the $L$-functions. Also, we propose an analogue of the Goldfeld conjecture for the family following Katz--Sarnak philosophy.
In 1979 Goldfeld conjectured: 50\% of the quadratic twists of an elliptic curve defined over the rationals have analytic rank zero. In this expository article we present a few recent developments towards the conjecture, especially its first instance - the congruent number elliptic curves.
We prove that the $2^\infty$-class groups of the imaginary quadratic fields have the distribution predicted by the Cohen-Lenstra heuristic. Given an elliptic curve E/Q with full rational 2-torsion and no rational cyclic subgroup of order four, we analogously prove that the $2^\infty$-Selmer groups of the quadratic twists of E have distribution as predicted by Delaunay's heuristic. In particular, among the twists E^d with |d| < N, the number of curves with rank at least two is $o(N)$.
This paper presents empirical evidence supporting Goldfeld's conjecture on the average analytic rank of a family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve in the function field setting. In particular, we consider representatives of the four classes of non-isogenous elliptic curves over F_q(t) with (q,6)=1 possessing two places of multiplicative reduction and one place of additive reduction. The case of q=5 provides the largest data set as well as the most convincing evidence that the average analytic rank converges to 1/2, which we also show is a lower bound following an argument of Kowals…
Extending Gross's result, we prove that a certain factorizaton of measures holds for all $p$ and any finite even Dirichlet character $χ$ of any conductor, rather than only for split $p$ and $χ$ with conductor a power of $p$. Using this generalization, we find lower bounds on the proportion of imaginary quadratic fields $K$ for which (under certain assumptions on the elliptic curve) a chosen quadratic twist of an elliptic curve $E$ over $K$ has rank $1$. We also find lower and upper bounds for the proportion of quadratic twists with rank $1$ when we vary $D$, the factor we twist by, under the a…
We prove a $p$-converse theorem for elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ in which $p$ is ramified. Namely, letting $r_p = \mathrm{corank}_{\mathbb{Z}_p}\mathrm{Sel}_{p^{\infty}}(E/\mathbb{Q})$, we show that $r_p \le 1 \implies \mathrm{rank}_{\mathbb{Z}}E(\mathbb{Q}) = \mathrm{ord}_{s = 1}L(E/\mathbb{Q},s) = r_p$ and $\#\mathrm{Sha}(E/\mathbb{Q}) < \infty$. In particular, this has applications to two classical Diophantine problems. First, it resolves Sylvester's conjecture on rational sums of cubes…
The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture has been numerically verified for the Jacobians of 32 modular hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 by Flynn, Leprévost, Schaefer, Stein, Stoll and Wetherell, using modular methods. In the calculation of the real period, there is a slight inaccuracy, which might give problems for curves with non-reduced components in the special fibre of their Néron model. In this present paper we explain how the real period can be computed, and how the verification has been extended to many more hyperelliptic curves, some of genus 3, 4 and 5, without using modular methods.
It is known that in the case of hyperelliptic curves the Shafarevich conjecture can be made effective, i.e., for any number field k and any finite set of places S of k, one can effectively compute the set of isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves over k with good reduction outside S. We show here that an extension of this result to an effective Shafarevich conjecture for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus g would imply an effective version of Siegel's theorem for integral points on hyperelliptic curves of genus g.
We study the 2-parity conjecture for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves over number fields. Under some mild assumptions on their reduction, we prove the conjecture over quadratic extensions of the base field. The proof proceeds via a generalisation of a formula of Kramer and Tunnell relating local invariants of the curve, which may be of independent interest. A new feature of this generalisation is the appearance of terms which govern whether or not the Cassels--Tate pairing on the Jacobian is alternating, which first appeared in work of Poonen--Stoll. We establish the local formula in many ins…
Let $\mathcal{X} : y^2 = f(x)$ be a hyperelliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$ of genus $g\geq 1$. Assume that the jacobian of $\mathcal{X}$ over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$ has no subvariety defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. Denote by $\mathcal{X}_t$ the specialization of $\mathcal{X}$ to an integer $T=t$, let $a_{\mathcal{X}_t}(p)$ be its trace of Frobenius, and $A_{\mathcal{X},r}(p) = \frac{1}{p}\sum_{t=1}^p a_{\mathcal{X}_t}(p)^r$ its $r$-th moment. The first moment is related to the rank of the jacobian $J_\mathcal{X}\left(\mathbb{Q}(T)\right)$ by a generalization of a conjecture of Nagao: $$\lim_{X \to \inft…
We study an analogue of the Mertens conjecture in the setting of global function fields. Building on the work of Cha, we show that most hyperelliptic curves do not satisfy the Mertens conjecture, but that if we modify the Mertens conjecture to have a larger constant, then this modified conjecture is satisfied by a positive proportion of hyperelliptic curves.
In the present paper, we generalize the celebrated classical lemma of Birch and Heegner on quadratic twists of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove the existence of explicit infinite families of quadratic twists with analytic ranks $0$ and $1$ for a large class of elliptic curves, and use Heegner points to explicitly construct rational points of infinite order on the twists of rank $1$. In addition, we show that these families of quadratic twists satisfy the $2$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture when the original curve does. We also prove a new result in the direction of …
In this paper we show the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for a certain elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[4]{5})$ is equivalent to the same conjecture for a certain pair of hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 over $\mathbb{Q}$. We numerically verify the conjecture for these hyperelliptic curves. Moreover, we explain the methods used to find this example, which turned out to be a bit more subtle than expected.
We study how Tamagawa numbers of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves vary as one varies the base field or the curve, in the case of semistable reduction. We find that there are strong constraints on the behaviour that appears, some of which are unexpected and specific to hyperelliptic curves. Our methods are explicit and allow one to write down formulae for Tamagawa numbers of infinite families of hyperelliptic curves, of the kind used in proofs of the parity conjecture for Jacobians of curves of small genus.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g\geq 1$ over a number field $K$ with good reduction outside a finite set of places $S$ of $K$. We prove that $C$ has a Weierstrass model over the ring of integers of $K$ with height effectively bounded only in terms of $g$, $S$ and $K$. In particular, we obtain that for any given number field $K$, finite set of places $S$ of $K$ and integer $g\geq 1$ one can in principle determine the set of $K$-isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves over $K$ of genus $g$ with good reduction outside $S$.
By applying methods recently developed by A. Smith with regards to Goldfeld's conjecture, we show that the density of square-free integers $d$ in $[1, N]$ for which the negative Pell equation $x^2 - dy^2 = -1$ has a solution is as predicted by the model of Stevenhagen.
In this paper, we study the algebraic rank and the analytic rank of the Jacobian of hyperelliptic curves $y^2 = x^5 + m^2$ for integers $m$. Namely, we first provide a condition on $m$ that gives a bound of the size of Selmer group and then we provide a condition on $m$ that makes $L$-functions non-vanishing. As a consequence, we construct a Jacobian that satisfies the rank part of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
We describe an algorithm that computes explicit models of hyperelliptic Shimura curves attached to an indefnite quaternion algebra over Q and Atkin-Lehner quotients of them. It exploits Cerednik-Drinfeld's non-archimedean uniformisation of Shimura curves, a formula of Gross and Zagier for the endomorphism ring of Heegner points over Artinian rings and the connection between Ribet's bimodules and the specialization of Heegner points. As an application, we provide a list of equations of Shimura curves and quotients of them obtained by our algorithm that had been conjectured by Kurihara.
Erdős, Graham, and Selfridge considered, for each positive integer $n$, the least value of $t_n$ so that the integers $n+1, n+2, \dots, n+t_n $ contain a subset the product of whose members with $n$ is a square. An open problem posed by Granville concerns the size of $t_n$, under the assumption of the ABC Conjecture. We establish some results on the distribution of $t_n$, and in the process solve Granville's problem unconditionally.
We prove the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties of positive dimension contained generically in the hyperelliptic Torelli locus for curves of genus at least 8, which is an analogue of Oort's conjecture in the hyperelliptic case.
In this paper we prove new explicit formulas for Faltings' $δ$-invariant of an arbitrary hyperelliptic Riemann surface. This has several applications: For example we obtain an explicit lower bound for $δ$ depending only on the genus, and we deduce new explicit bounds for the Arakelov self-intersection number $ω^2$ associated to hyperelliptic curves over number fields. Furthermore, we obtain an improved version of Szpiro's small points conjecture for hyperelliptic curves of genus at least $3$. Our method allows us in addition to establish a generalization of Rosenhain's formula on $θ$-derivativ…
Let $q$ be an odd prime power, and $H_{d,q}$ denote the set of square-free monic polynomials $D(x) \in F_q[x]$ of degree $d$. Katz and Sarnak showed that the moments, over $H_{d,q}$, of the zeta functions associated to the curves $y^2=D(x)$, evaluated at the central point, tend, as $q \to \infty$, to the moments of characteristic polynomials, evaluated at the central point, of matrices in $USp(2\lfloor (d-1)/2 \rfloor)$. Using techniques that were originally developed for studying moments of $L$-functions over number fields, Andrade and Keating conjectured an asymptotic formula for the moments…
Given an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, it is a conjecture of Goldfeld that asymptotically half of its quadratic twists will have rank zero and half will have rank one. Nevertheless, higher rank twists do occur: subject to the parity conjecture, Gouvêa and Mazur constructed $X^{1/2-ε}$ twists by discriminants up to $X$ with rank at least two. For any $d\geq 3$, we build on their work to consider twists by degree $d$ $S_d$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with discriminant up to $X$. We prove that there are at least $X^{c_d-ε}$ such twists with positive rank, where $c_d$ is a positive constant that t…
A weaker form of a 1979 conjecture of Goldfeld states that for every elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, a positive proportion of its quadratic twists $E^{(d)}$ have rank 1. Using tools from Galois cohomology, we give criteria on E and d which force a positive proportion of the quadratic twists of E to have 3-Selmer rank 1 and global root number -1. We then give four nonisomorphic infinite families of elliptic curves $E_{m, n}$ which satisfy these criteria. Conditional on the rank part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this verifies the aforementioned conjecture for infinitely many ellip…
Nagao's conjecture relates the rank of an elliptic surface to a limit formula arising from a weighted average of fibral Frobenius traces, and it is further generalized for smooth irreducible projective surfaces by M. Hindry and A. Pacheco. We show that the Sato-Tate conjecture based on the random matrix model implies Nagao's conjecture for certain twist families of elliptic curves and hyperelliptic curves.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, a celebrated conjecture of Goldfeld asserts that a positive proportion of its quadratic twists should have analytic rank 0 (resp. 1). We show this conjecture holds whenever $E$ has a rational 3-isogeny. We also prove the analogous result for the sextic twists of $j$-invariant 0 curves (Mordell curves). To prove these results, we establish a general criterion for the non-triviality of the $p$-adic logarithm of Heegner points at an Eisenstein prime $p$, in terms of the relative $p$-class numbers of certain number fields and then apply this criterion…
We study the parity of rank of $2$-${\rm Selmer}$ groups associated to $π/3$ and $2π/3$-congruent numbers. Our second result gives some positive densities about $π/3$ and $2π/3$ non-congruent numbers which can support the even part of Goldfeld's conjecture. We give some necessary conditions such that $n$ is non $π/3$-congruent number for elliptic curves $E_n$ whose Shafarevich-Tate group is non-trivial. In the last section, we show that for $n=pq\equiv 5(resp. \ 11)\pmod{24}$, the density of non $π/3$($resp.$ $2π/3$)-congruent numbers is at least 75\%, where $p,q$ are primes.
The zeta function of a curve over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary symplectic matrix, called the Frobenius class of the curve. We compute the expected value of the trace of the n-th power of the Frobenius class for an ensemble of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over a fixed finite field in the limit of large genus, and compare the results to the corresponding averages over the unitary symplectic group USp(2g). We are able to compute the averages for powers n almost up to 4g, finding agreement with the Random Matrix results except for small …
We consider generalizations of Szpiro's classical discriminant conjecture to hyperelliptic curves over a number field $K$, and to smooth, projective and geometrically connected curves $X$ over $K$ of genus at least one. The main results give effective exponential versions of the generalized conjectures for some curves, including all curves $X$ of genus one or two. We obtain in particular exponential versions of Szpiro's classical discriminant conjecture for elliptic curves over $K$. In course of our proofs we establish explicit results for certain Arakelov invariants of hyperelliptic curves (e…
Let $D$ be a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathcal{O}$ an Eichler order in $D$ of square-free level. We study distribution of the toric periods of algebraic modular forms of level $\mathcal{O}$. We focus on two problems: non-vanishing and sign changes. Firstly, under certain conditions on $\mathcal{O}$, we prove the non-vanishing of the toric periods for positive proportion of imaginary quadratic fields. This improves the known lower bounds toward Goldfeld's conjecture in some cases and provides evidence for similar non-vanishing conjectures for central values of twisted …
In this paper we study the Coleman-Oort conjecture for superelliptic curves, i.e., curves defined by affine equations $y^n=F(x)$ with $F$ a separable polynomial. We prove that up to isomorphism there are at most finitely many superelliptic curves of fixed genus $g\geq 8$ with CM Jacobians. The proof relies on the geometric structures of Shimura subvarieties in Siegel modular varieties and the stability properties of Higgs bundles associated to fibred surfaces.
Given a hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus $g$ over a number field $K$ and a Weierstrass model $\mathscr{C}$ of $C$ over the ring of integers ${\mathcal O}_K$ (i.e. the hyperelliptic involution of $C$ extends to $\mathscr{C}$ and the quotient is a smooth model of ${\mathbb P}^1_K$ over ${\mathcal O}_K$), we give necessary and sometimes sufficient conditions for $\mathscr{C}$ to be defined by a global Weierstrass equation. In particular, if $C$ has everywhere good reduction, we prove that it is defined by a global Weierstrass equation with invertible discriminant if the class number $h_K$ is prim…
We study which integers are admissible as Fourier coefficients of even integer weight newforms. In the specific case of the tau-function, we show that for all odd primes $\ell < 100$ and all integers $m \geq 1$, we have $$ τ(n) \neq \pm \ell, \pm 5^m. $$ For general newforms $f$ with even integer weight $2k$ and integer coefficients, we prove for most integers $j$ dividing $2k-1$ and all ordinary primes $p$ that $a_f(p^2)$ is never a $j$-th power. We prove a similar result for $a_f(p^4)$, conditional on the Frey-Mazur Conjecture. Our primary method involves relating questions about values of n…
Let $(G, ω)$ be a hyperelliptic vertex-weighted graph of genus $g \geq 2$. We give a characterization of $(G, ω)$ for which there exists a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus $g$ over a complete discrete valuation field with reduction graph $(G, ω)$ such that the ranks of any divisors are preserved under specialization. We explain, for a given vertex-weighted graph $(G, ω)$ in general, how the existence of such $X$ relates the Riemann--Roch formulae for $X$ and $(G, ω)$, and also how the existence of such $X$ is related to a conjecture of Caporaso.
Boix, De Stefani and Vanzo have characterized ordinary/supersingular elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in terms of the level of the defining cubic homogenous polynomial. We extend their study to arbitrary genus, in particular we prove that every ordinary hyperelliptic curve $\mathcal{C}$ of genus $g\geq 2$ has level $2$. We provide a good number of examples and raise a conjecture.
We consider an abelian variety defined over a number field. We give conditional bounds for the order of its Tate-Shafarevich group, as well as conditional bounds for the Néron-Tate height of generators of its Mordell-Weil group. The bounds are implied by strong but nowadays classical conjectures, such as the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture and the functional equation of the L-series. In particular, we improve and generalise a result by D. Goldfeld and L. Szpiro on the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group, and extends a conjecture of S. Lang on the canonical height of a system of generators…
Let $n=2g+2$ be a positive even integer, $f(x)$ a degree $n$ complex polynomial without multiple roots and $C_f: y^2=f(x)$ the corresponding genus $g$ hyperelliptic curve over the field $\C$ of complex numbers. Let a $(g-1)$-dimensional complex abelian variety $P$ be a Prym variety of $C_f$ that corresponds to a unramified double cover of $C_f$. Suppose that there exists a subfield $K$ of $\C$ such that $f(x)$ lies in $K[x]$, is irreducible over $K$ and its Galois group is the full symmetric group. Assuming that $g>2$, we prove that $End(P)$ is either the ring of integers $Z$ or the direct sum…
We analyze the distribution of unitarized L-polynomials Lp(T) (as p varies) obtained from a hyperelliptic curve of genus g <= 3 defined over Q. In the generic case, we find experimental agreement with a predicted correspondence (based on the Katz-Sarnak random matrix model) between the distributions of Lp(T) and of characteristic polynomials of random matrices in the compact Lie group USp(2g). We then formulate an analogue of the Sato-Tate conjecture for curves of genus 2, in which the generic distribution is augmented by 22 exceptional distributions, each corresponding to a compact subgroup o…
We provide evidence for this conclusion: given a finite Galois cover $f: X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}$ of group $G$, almost all (in a density sense) realizations of $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ do not occur as specializations of $f$. We show that this holds if the number of branch points of $f$ is sufficiently large, under the abc-conjecture and, possibly, the lower bound predicted by the Malle conjecture for the number of Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ of given group and bounded discriminant. This widely extends a result of Granville on the lack of $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on quadrat…
Assume that the section conjecture holds over number fields. We prove then that it holds for a broad class of curves defined over finitely generated extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. This class contains every projective, hyperelliptic curve, every hyperbolic, affine curve of genus $\le 2$, and a non-empty open subset of any curve. If we furthermore assume the weak Bombieri-Lang conjecture, we prove that the section conjecture holds for every hyperbolic curve over every finitely generated extension of $\mathbb{Q}$.
The number F(h) of imaginary quadratic fields with a given class number h is of classical interest: Gauss' class number problem asks for a determination of those fields counted by F(h). The unconditional computation of F(h) for h up to 100 was completed by M. Watkins, using ideas of Goldfeld and Gross-Zagier; Soundararajan has more recently made conjectures about the order of magnitude of F(h) as h increases without bound, and determined its average order. In the present paper, we refine Soundararajan's conjecture to a conjectural asymptotic formula and also consider the subtler problem of det…
We prove under the Bombieri-Lang conjecture for surfaces that there is an absolute bound on the length of sequences of integer squares with constant second differences, for sequences which are not formed by the squares of integers in arithmetic progression. This answers a question proposed in 2010 by J. Browkin and J. Brzezinski, and independently by E. Gonzalez-Jimenez and X. Xarles. We also show that under the Bombieri-Lang conjecture for surfaces, for every $k\geq 3$ there is an absolute bound on the length of sequences formed by $k$-th powers with constant second differences. This gives a …
Fix a finite field. A hyperelliptic curve determines a measure on the discrete space of rank two bundles on the projective line: the mass of a given vector bundle is the number of line bundles whose pushforward it is. In a sequence of hyperelliptic curves whose genera tend to infinity, these measures tend to the natural measure on the space of rank two bundles. This is a function field analogue of Duke's theorem on the equidistribution of Heegner points, and can be proven similarly: it follows from a manipulation of zeta functions, plus the Riemann Hypothesis for curves. Likewise, a sequence o…
