The Heisenberg Lie group $H_3$ is modeled on the differentiable structure of $\mathbb{R}^3$ but equipped with another non-commutative product operation. By fixing the usual metric on the Heisenberg Lie group, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the behavior of magnetic geodesics for any invariant Lorentz force. After writing the magnetic equations, we found symmetries that enable the explicit computation of the magnetic trajectories for any homogeneous exact and non-exact magnetic form. Finally we show that these magnetic trajectories are solutions of a variational problem: we present explicit examples of Lagrangians.
In this note, we prove an index theorem on Galois covering for Heisenberg elliptic differential operators, which is not elliptic, analogous to Atiyah's $Γ$-index theorem. This note also contains an example of Heisenberg differential operators with non-trivial $Γ$-index.
We explore the geometry that underlies the osculating nilpotent group structures of the Heisenberg calculus. For a smooth manifold $M$ with a distribution $H\subseteq TM$ analysts use explicit (and rather complicated) coordinate formulas to define the nilpotent groups that are central to the calculus. Our aim in this paper is to provide insight in the intrinsic geometry that underlies these coordinate formulas. First, we introduce `parabolic arrows' as a generalization of tangent vectors. The definition of parabolic arrows involves a mix of first and second order derivatives. Parabolic arrows …
This memoir deals with the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds, or Heisenberg calculus. The Heisenberg manifolds generalize CR and contact manifolds and in this context the main differential operators at stake include the Hörmander's sum of squares, the Kohn Laplacian, the horizontal sublaplacian and its conformal powers and the contact Laplacian. These operators cannot be elliptic and the relevant pseudodifferential calculus to study them is provided by the Heisenberg calculus. The aim of this monograph is threefold. First, we give an intrinsic approach to the Heisenberg calculus by…
We consider the three-dimensional Heisenberg group, equipped with any left-invariant metric, either Lorentzian or Riemannian. We completely classify their affine vector fields and investigate their relationship with Killing vector fields and their casual character. We also classify their Ricci, curvature and matter collineations, proving that there are no nontrivial examples.
In 1974, Folland and Stein constructed an inhomogeneous pseudo-differential calculus based on analysis on the Heisenberg group. This Heisenberg calculus was generalized by several authors, to any subbundle of the tangent bundle. van Erp and Yuncken, following Debord and Skandalis showed that this calculus can be recovered using a deformation groupoid alla tangent groupoid of Connes. Using functoriality of the deformation to the normal cone construction, we give an elementary construction of this groupoid. We then extend it to the general case of a filtration of the tangent bundle by an iterate…
The notion of $Γ$-symmetric space is a natural generalization of the classical notion of symmetric space based on $\z_2$-grading of Lie algebras. In our case, we consider homogeneous spaces $G/H$ such that the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$ admits a $Γ$-grading where $Γ$ is a finite abelian group. In this work we study Riemannian metrics and Lorentzian metrics on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_3$ adapted to the symmetries of a $Γ$-symmetric structure on $\mathbb{H}_3$. We prove that the classification of $\z_2^2$-symmetric Riemannian and Lorentzian metrics on $\mathbb{H}_3$ corresponds to the class…
We introduce novel equations, in the spirit of rough path theory, that parametrize level sets of intrinsically regular maps on the Heisenberg group with values in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These equations can be seen as a sub-Riemannian counterpart to classical ODEs arising from the implicit function theorem. We show that they enjoy all the natural well-posedness properties, thus allowing for a "good calculus" on nonsmooth level sets. We apply these results to prove an area formula for the intrinsic measure of level sets, along with the corresponding coarea formula.
Polyhomogeneous symbols, defined by Kohn-Nirenberg and Hörmander in the 60's, play a central role in the symbolic calculus of most pseudodifferential calculi. We prove a simple characterisation of polyhomogeneous functions which avoids the use of asymptotic expansions. Specifically, if $U$ is open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, then a polyhomogeneous symbol on $U \times \mathbb{R}^d$ is precisely the restriction to $t=1$ of a function on $U \times \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ which is homogeneous for the dilations of $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ modulo Schwartz class functions. This result holds for arbitrary graded di…

The extended Heisenberg algebra for a contact manifold has a symbolic calculus that accommodates both Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators as well as classical pseudodifferential operators. We derive here a formula for the index of Fredholm operators in this extended calculus. This formula incorporates in a single expression the Atiyah-Singer formula for elliptic operators, as well as Boutet de Monvel's Toeplitz index formula.
A contact manifold is a manifold equipped with a distribution of codimension one that satisfies a `maximal non-integrability' condition. A standard example of a contact structure is a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold, and operators of analytic interest are the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator and the Szego projector onto its kernel. The Heisenberg calculus is the natural pseudodifferential calculus developed originally for the analysis of these operators. We introduce a `non-integrability' condition for a distribution of arbitrary codimension that directly generalizes the definition of a co…
This paper is part of a series papers devoted to geometric and spectral theoretic applications of the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds. More specifically, in this paper we make use of the Heisenberg calculus of Beals-Greiner and Taylor to analyze the spectral theory of hypoelliptic operators on Heisenberg manifolds. The main results of this paper include: (i) Obtaining complex powers of hypoelliptic operators as holomorphic families of Psi_{H}DO's, which can be used to define a scale of weighted Sobolev spaces interpolating the weighted Sobolev spaces of Folland-Stein and providin…
A non-commutative differential calculus on the $h$-superplane is presented via a contraction of the $q$-superplane. An R-matrix which satisfies both ungraded and graded Yang-Baxter equations is obtained and a new deformation of the $(1+1)$ dimensional classical phase space (the super-Heisenberg algebra) is introduced.
We present a reformulation of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for time dependent systems of second order ordinary differential equations using the Frölicher-Nijenhuis theory on the first jet bundle, $J^1π$. We prove that a system of time dependent SODE, identified with a semispray $S$, is Lagrangian if and only if a special class, $Λ^1_S(J^1π)$, of semi-basic 1-forms is not empty. We provide global Helmholtz conditions to characterize the class $Λ^1_S(J^1π)$ of semi-basic 1-forms. Each such class contains the Poincaré-Cartan 1-form of some Lagrangian function. We prove that i…
By adapting a technique of Molchanov, we obtain the heat kernel asymptotics at the sub-Riemannian cut locus, when the cut points are reached by an $r$-dimensional parametric family of optimal geodesics. We apply these results to the bi-Heisenberg group, that is, a nilpotent left-invariant sub-Rieman\-nian structure on $\mathbb{R}^{5}$ depending on two real parameters $α_{1}$ and $α_{2}$. We develop some results about its geodesics and heat kernel associated to its sub-Laplacian and we illuminate some interesting geometric and analytic features appearing when one compares the isotropic ($α_{1}=…
We consider differential operators between sections of arbitrary powers of the determinant line bundle over a contact manifold. We extend the standard notions of the Heisenberg calculus: noncommutative symbolic calculus, the principal symbol, and the contact order to such differential operators. Our first main result is an intrinsically defined "subsymbol" of a differential operator, which is a differential invariant of degree one lower than that of the principal symbol. In particular, this subsymbol associates a contact vector field to an arbitrary second order linear differential operator. O…
A controlled magnetic Hamiltonian (CMH) system is a regular controlled Hamiltonian (RCH) system with magnetic symplectic form, it is an important special case of RCH system. Note that there is a magnetic term on the cotangent bundle of the Heisenberg group, such that we can define a CMH system with symmetry of the Heisenberg group. Since the set of the CMH systems with symmetries is a subset of the RCH systems with symmetries, and it is not complete under the regular point reduction of RCH system, in this paper, then we give the regular point reduction of a CMH system with symmetry of the Heis…
We present a new solution to the index problem for hypoelliptic operators in the Heisenberg calculus on contact manifolds, by constructing the appropriate topological K-theory cocycle for such operators. Its Chern character gives a cohomology class to which the Atiyah-Singer index formula can be applied. Such a K-cocycle has already been constructed by Boutet de Monvel for Toeplitz operators, and, more recently, by Melrose and Epstein for the class of Hermite operators. Our construction applies to general hypoelliptic pseudodifferential operators in the Heisenberg calculus. As in the Hermite I…
We derive sub-Riemannian Ricci curvature tensor for sub-Riemannian manifolds. We provide examples including the Heisenberg group, displacement group, and Martinet sub-Riemannian structure with arbitrary weighted volumes, in which we establish analytical bounds for sub-Riemannian curvature dimension bounds and log-Sobolev inequalities. {These bounds can be used to establish the entropy dissipation results for sub-Riemannian drift diffusion processes on a compact spatial domain, in term of $L_1$ distance.} Our derivation of Ricci curvature is based on generalized Gamma $z$ calculus and $z$--Boch…
Reductions of higher tangent bundles of Lie groupoids provide natural examples of geometric structures which we would like to call higher algebroids. Such objects can be also constructed abstractly starting from an arbitrary almost Lie algebroid. A higher algebroid is, in principle, a graded bundle equipped with a differential relation of special kind (a Zakrzewski morphism). In the paper we investigate basic properties of higher algebroids and show some applications. Namely, we develop a geometric framework for variational calculus on higher algebroids (including both forces and momenta). Suc…
The language of Lagrangian submanifolds is used to extend a geometric characterization of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations on tangent bundles to regular Lie algebroids. Since not all closed sections are locally exact on Lie algebroids, the Helmholtz conditions on Lie algebroids are necessary but not sufficient, so they give a weaker definition of the inverse problem. As an application the Helmholtz conditions on Atiyah algebroids are obtained so that the relationship between the inverse problem and the reduced inverse problem by symmetries can be described. Some examples and c…
Secondary Calculus is a formal replacement for differential calculus on the space of solutions of a system of possibly non-linear partial differential equations and it is essentially due to Alexandre M. Vinogradov and his collaborators. Many coordinate free properties of PDEs find their natural place in Secondary Calculus including: symmetries and conservation laws, variational principles and the coordinate free aspects of the calculus of variations, recursion operators and Hamiltonian structures, etc. The building blocks of this language are horizontal cohomologies of diffieties, i.e. infinit…
