The present paper considers multipartite graphs from the perspective of design theory and coding theory. A one-factor $F$ of the complete multipartite graph $K_{n\times g}$ (with $n$ parts of size $g$) gives rise to a $(g+1)$-ary code ${\cal C}$ of length $n$ and constant weight two. Furthermore, if the one-factor $F$ meets a certain constraint, then ${\cal C}$ becomes an optimal code with minimum distance three. We initiate the study of one-factorizations of complete multipartite graphs subject to distance constraints. The problem of decomposing $K_{n\times g}$ into the largest subgraphs with minimum distance three is investigated. It is proved that, for $n\le g$, the complete multipartite graph $K_{n\times g}$ can be decomposed into $g^2$ copies of the largest subgraphs with minimum distance three. For even $gn$ with $n>g$, it is proved that the complete multipartite graph $K_{n\times g}$ can be decomposed into $g(n-1)$ one-factors with minimum distance three, leaving a small gap of $n$ (in terms of $g$) to be resolved (If $gn$ is odd when $n>g$, no such decomposition of $K_{n\times g}$ exists).
An automorphism group G of a 1-factorization of the complete multipartite graph $K_{m\times n}$ consists in permutations of the vertices of the graph mapping factors to factors. In this paper, we give a complete answer to the existence or non-existence problem of a 1-factorization of $K_{m\times n}$ admitting an abelian group acting sharply transitively on the vertices of the graph.
The generalization of the Oberwolfach Problem, proposed by J. Liu in 2000, asks for a uniform $2$-factorization of the complete multipartite graph $K_{m\times n}$. Here we focus our attention on $2$-factorizations regular under the cyclic group $Z_{mn}$, whose $2$-factors are disjoint union of cycles all of even length $\ell$. In particular, we present a complete solution for the extremal cases $\ell=4$ and $\ell=mn$.
In a mathematics workshop with $mn$ mathematicians from $n$ different areas, each area consisting of $m$ mathematicians, we want to create a collaboration network. For this purpose, we would like to schedule daily meetings between groups of size three, so that (i) two people of the same area meet one person of another area, (ii) each person has exactly $r$ meeting(s) each day, and (iii) each pair of people of the same area have exactly $λ$ meeting(s) with each person of another area by the end of the workshop. Using hypergraph amalgamation-detachment, we prove a more general theorem. In partic…
We calculate the outerplanar crossing numbers of complete multipartite graphs which have $n$ partite sets with $m$ vertices and one partite set with $p$ vertices, where either $p|mn$ or $mn|p$.
We calculate the cordial edge deficiencies of the complete multipartite graphs and find an upper bound for their cordial vertex deficiencies. We also give conditions under which the tensor product of two cordial graphs is cordial.
It is well known that the complete multipartite graphs can not be determined by their adjacency spectra. But in this paper, we prove that they can be determined by their distance spectra, which confirms the conjecture proposed by Lin, Hong, Wang and Shu.
We prove that a complete multipartite graph $K$ with $n>1$ vertices and $m$ edges can be decomposed into edge-disjoint Hamilton paths if and only if $\frac m{n-1}$ is an integer and the maximum degree of $K$ is at most $\frac {2m}{n-1}$.
In this paper, we study the existence problem for cyclic $\ell$-cycle decompositions of the graph $K_m[n]$, the complete multipartite graph with $m$ parts of size $n$, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence in the case that $2\ell \mid (m-1)n$.
The Kirchhoff index of a graph is defined as half of the sum of all effective resistance distances between any two vertices. Assuming a complete multipartite graph G, by methods from linear algebra we explicitly formulate effective resistance distances between any two vertices of G, and its Kirchhoff index. In rest of paper we explore extremal value of Kirchhoff index for multipartite graphs
The strong geodetic problem is to find the smallest number of vertices such that by fixing one shortest path between each pair, all vertices of the graph are covered. In this paper we study the strong geodetic problem on complete bipartite graphs; in particular, we discuss its asymptotic behavior. Some results for complete multipartite graphs are also derived. Finally, we prove that the strong geodetic problem restricted to (general) bipartite graphs is NP-complete.
The energy of a graph is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of the graph. Akbari et al. \cite{S. Akbari} proved that for a complete multipartite graph $K_{t_1 ,\ldots,t_k}$, if $t_i\geq 2 \ (i=1,\ldots,k)$, then deleting any edge will increase the energy. A natural question is how the energy changes when $\min\{t_1 ,\ldots,t_k\}=1$. In this paper, we will answer this question and completely determine how the energy of a complete multipartite graph changes when one edge is removed.
We say that a digraph $D$ is competitive if any pair of vertices has a common out-neighbor in $D$ and that a graph $G$ is competitively orientable if there exists a competitive orientation of $G$. The notion of competitive digraphs arose while studying digraph whose competition graphs are complete. We derive some useful properties of competitively orientable graphs and show that a complete graph of order $n$ is competitively orientable if and only if $n \geq 7$. Then we completely characterize a competitively orientable complete multipartite graph in terms of the sizes of its partite sets. Mor…
We prove the existence of infinite classes of cyclic G-decompositions of the complete multipartite graph, G being a caterpillar, a hairy cycle or a cycle. All the results are obtained by the construction of d-divisible $α$-labelings of G, introduced in [A. Pasotti, On d-graceful labelings, to appear on Ars Combin.] as a generalization of classical $α$-labelings, whose existence implies that one of graph decompositions.
Let the diameter cover number, $D^t_r(G)$, denote the least integer $d$ such that under any $r$-coloring of the edges of the graph $G$, there exists a collection of $t$ monochromatic subgraphs of diameter at most $d$ such that every vertex of $G$ is contained in at least one of the subgraphs. We explore the diameter cover number with two colors and two subgraphs when $G$ is a complete multipartite graph with at least three parts. We determine exactly the value of $D_2^2(G)$ for all complete tripartite graphs $G$, and almost all complete multipartite graphs with more than three parts.
In this paper, first we compute the energy of a special partitioned matrix under some cases. As a consequence, we obtain the reciprocal distance energy of the complete multipartite graph and also we give various other energies of complete multipartite graphs. Next, we show that among all complete k-partite graphs on n vertices, the complete split graph has minimum reciprocal distance energy and the reciprocal distance energy is maximum for the Turan graph. At last, it is shown that the reciprocal distance energy of the complete bipartite graph km,m decreases under deletion of an edge if 2\le m…
In recent papers by Grohe and Marx, the treewidth of the line graph of the complete graph is a critical example. We determine the exact treewidth of the line graph of the complete graph. By extending these techniques, we determine the exact treewidth of the line graph of a regular complete multipartite graph. For an arbitrary complete multipartite graph, we determine the treewidth of the line graph up to a lower order term.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and $p$ a positive integer. A subset $S\subseteq V$ is called a $p$-dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $S$ has at least $p$ neighbors in $S$. The $p$-domination number is the minimum cardinality of a $p$-dominating set in $G$. In this paper, we establish an exact formula of the $p$-domination number of all complete multipartite graphs for arbitrary positive integer $p$.
One of the important features of an interconnection network is its ability to efficiently simulate programs or parallel algorithms written for other architectures. Such a simulation problem can be mathematically formulated as a graph embedding problem. In this paper, we embed complete multipartite graphs into certain trees, such as $k$-rooted complete binary trees and $k$-rooted sibling trees.
A \textit{distinguishing partition} of a group $X$ with automorphism group ${aut}(X)$ is a partition of $X$ that is fixed by no nontrivial element of ${aut}(X)$. In the event that $X$ is a complete multipartite graph with its automorphism group, the existence of a distinguishing partition is equivalent to the existence of an asymmetric hypergraph with prescribed edge sizes. An asymptotic result is proven on the existence of a distinguishing partition when $X$ is a complete multipartite graph with $m_1$ parts of size $n_1$ and $m_2$ parts of size $n_2$ for small $n_1$, $m_2$ and large $m_1$, $n…
For a hypergraph G and a positive integer s, let χ_{\ell} (G,s) be the minimum value of l such that G is L-colorable from every list L with |L(v)|=l for each v\in V(G) and |L(u)\cap L(v)|\leq s for all u, v\in e\in E(G). This parameter was studied by Kratochvíl, Tuza and Voigt for various kinds of graphs. Using randomized constructions we find the asymptotics of χ_{\ell} (G,s) for balanced complete multipartite graphs and for complete k-partite k-uniform hypergraphs.
A proper vertex coloring of a graph is equitable if the sizes of color classes differ by at most one. The equitable chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=^*(G)$, is the minimum $t$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable for $k\ge t$. We develop a formula and a linear-time algorithm which compute the equitable chromatic threshold of an arbitrary complete multipartite graph.
The $g$-girth-thickness $θ(g,G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of planar subgraphs of girth at least $g$ whose union is $G$. In this paper, we calculate the $4$-girth-thickness $θ(4,G)$ of the complete $m$-partite graph $G$ when each part has an even number of vertices.
This paper studies the on-line choice number on complete multipartite graphs with independence number $m$. We give a unified strategy for every prescribed $m$. Our main result leads to several interesting consequences comparable to known results. (1) If $ k_1-\sum_{p=2}^m(\frac{p^2}{2}-\frac{3p}{2}+1)k_p\geq 0$, where $k_p$ denotes the number of parts of cardinality $p$, then $G$ is on-line chromatic-choosable. (2) If $ |V(G)|\leq\frac{m^2-m+2}{m^2-3m+4}χ(G)$, then $G$ is on-line chromatic-choosable. (3) The on-line choice number of regular complete multipartite graphs $K_{m\star k}$ is at mos…
Given a finite simple graph $\cG$ with $n$ vertices, we can construct the Cayley graph on the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the edges of $\cG$, interpreted as transpositions. We show that, if $\cG$ is complete multipartite, the eigenvalues of the Laplacian of $\Cay(\cG)$ have a simple expression in terms of the irreducible characters of transpositions, and of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. As a consequence we can prove that the Laplacians of $\cG$ and of $\Cay(\cG)$ have the same first nontrivial eigenvalue. This is equivalent to saying that Aldous's conjecture, asserting that th…
We prove that for every path H, and every integer d, there is a polynomial f such that every graph G with chromatic number greater than f(t) either contains H as an induced subgraph, or contains as a subgraph the complete d-partite graph with parts of cardinality t. For t = 1 and general d this is a classical theorem of Gyárfás, and for d = 2 and general t this is a theorem of Bonamy et al.
Let $K_{m[n]}$ be the complete multipartite graph with $m$ parts, while each part contains $n$ vertices. The orientably-regular embeddings of complete graphs $K_{m[1]}$ have been determined by Biggs (1971) \cite{Big1}, James and Jones (1985) \cite{JJ}. During the past twenty years, several papers such as Du et al.(2007, 2010) \cite{DJKNS1,DJKNS2}, Jones et al. (2007, 2008) \cite{JNS1,JNS2}, Kwak and Kwon (2005, 2008) \cite{KK1,KK2} and Nedela et al. (1997, 2002)\cite{NS,NSZ} contributed to the orientably-regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs $K_{2[n]}$ and the final classification wa…
Interval minors of bipartite graphs were introduced by Jacob Fox in the study of Stanley-Wilf limits. Recently, Mohar, Rafiey, Tayfeh-Rezaie and Wu investigated the maximum number of edges in $K_{k,\ell}$-interval minor free bipartite graphs when $k=2$ and $k=3$. In this paper, we investigate the maximum number of edges in $K_{k,\ell}$-interval minor free bipartite graphs for general $k$ and $\ell$. We also study the maximum number of edges in $K_{\ell_1,\ell_2,\cdots,\ell_t}$-interval minor free multipartite graphs.
Let $\mathrm{ch}(G)$ denote the choice number of a graph $G$, and let $K_{s*k}$ be the complete $k$-partite graph with $s$ vertices in each part. Erdős, Rubin, and Taylor showed that $\mathrm{ch}( K_{2*k})=k$, and suggested the problem of determining the choice number of $K_{s*k}.$ The first author established $\mathrm{ch}( K_{3*k})=\left\lceil \frac{4k-1}{3}\right\rceil$. Here we prove $\mathrm{ch} (K_{4*k})=\left\lceil \frac{3k-1}{2}\right\rceil$.
The obstruction set for graphs with knotless embeddings is not known, but a recent paper of Goldberg, Mattman, and Naimi indicates that it is quite large. Almost all known obstructions fall into four Triangle-Y families and they ask if there is an efficient way of finding or estimating the size of such graph families. Inspired by this question, we investigate the family size for complete multipartite graphs. Aside from three families that appear to grow exponentially, these families stabilize: after a certain point, increasing the number of vertices in a fixed part does not change family size.
A hamiltonian cycle system (HCS, for short) of a graph $Γ$ is a partition of the edges of $Γ$ into hamiltonian cycles. A HCS is cyclic when it is invariant under a cyclic permutation of all the vertices of $Γ$; the existence problem for a cyclic HCS has been completely solved by Buratti and Del Fra in 2004 when $Γ$ is the complete graph $K_v$, $v$ odd, and by Jordon and Morris in 2008 when $Γ$ is the complete graph minus a $1$-factor $K_v-I$, $v$ even. In this work we present a complete solution to the existence problem of a cyclic HCS for $Γ= K_{m\times n}$, the complete multipartite graph, w…
A tree in an edge-colored graph $G$ is said to be a rainbow tree if no two edges on the tree share the same color. Given two positive integers $k$, $\ell$ with $k\geq 3$, the \emph{$(k,\ell)$-rainbow index} $rx_{k,\ell}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed in an edge-coloring of $G$ such that for any set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exist $\ell$ internally disjoint rainbow trees connecting $S$. This concept was introduced by Chartrand et al., and there have been very few results about it. In this paper, we investigate the $(k,\ell)$-rainbow index for complete bipartite graphs…
A proper vertex coloring of a graph is equitable if the sizes of color classes differ by at most 1. The equitable chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=^*(G)$, is the minimum $t$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable for $k \ge t$. In this paper, we give the exact values of $χ_=(K_{m_1,..., m_r} \times K_n)$ and $χ_=^*(K_{m_1,..., m_r} \times K_n)$ for $\sum_{i = 1}^r m_i \leq n$.
In this paper we determine the exact values of the signed domination number, signed total domination number, and minus domination number of complete multipartite graphs, which substantially generalizes some previous results obtained for special subclasses of complete multipartite graphs such as cliques and complete bipartite graphs.
In the vector space of symmetric functions, the elements of the basis of elementary symmetric functions are (up to a factor) the chromatic symmetric functions of disjoint unions of cliques. We consider their graph complements, the functions $\{r_λ: λ\text{ an integer partition}\}$ defined as chromatic symmetric functions of complete multipartite graphs. This basis was first introduced by Penaguiao [21]. We provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the change-of-basis formula between the $r_λ$ and the monomial symmetric functions, and we show that the coefficients of the ch…
Let $r \geqslant 0$ and $k \geqslant 1$ be integers. We say that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring if there exists a proper $k$-coloring of $G$ such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most $r$. The least $k$ such that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring is denoted by $χ_{r=} (G)$, and the least $n$ such that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring for all $k \geqslant n$ is denoted by $χ^*_{r=} (G)$. In this paper, we propose a necessary and sufficient condition for a complete multipartite graph $G$ to have an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring, and also g…
Turan's Theorem states that every graph of a certain edge density contains a complete graph $K^k$ and describes the unique extremal graphs. We give a similar Theorem for l-partite graphs. For large l, we find the minimal edge density $d^k_l$, such that every $\ell$-partite graph whose parts have pairwise edge density greater than $d^k_l$ contains a $K^k$. It turns out that $d^k_l=(k-2)/(k-1)$ for large enough l. We also describe the structure of the extremal graphs. For the case of triangles we show that $d^3_{13}=1/2$, disproving a conjecture by Bondy, Shen, Thomasse and Thomassen.
This paper presents four new classes of binary quantum codes with minimum dis- tance 3 and 4, namely Class-I, Class-II, Class-III and Class-IV. The classes Class-I and Class-II are constructed based on self-dual orientable embeddings of the com- plete graphs K4r+1 and K4s and by current graphs and rotation schemes. and s are both divisible by 4.
We show that there is a constant $k$ such that when $r \geq 2$ and $m \geq r^k$, the complete $r$-partite graph $K_{m*r}$ has a non-colorable list assignment $L$ such that $|L(v)| \geq \frac{7}{750}r\ln m$ for all $v$ and such that $|L(u) \cap L(v)| \leq \left\lfloor \frac{2r}{r-1} \right\rfloor$ whenever $u \neq v$. This roughly extends a result of Alon to the context of "choosability with separation", introduced by Kratochvíl, Tuza, and Voigt.
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected graph of order $n$ with an edge-coloring $c:E(G)\rightarrow\{1,2,\dots,t\}$,$t\in\mathbb{N}$, where adjacent edges may be colored with the same color. A tree $T$ in $G$ is a \emph{proper tree} if no two adjacent edges of it are assigned the same color. Let $k$ be a fixed integer with $2\leq k\leq n$. For a vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|\geq 2$, a tree is called an \emph{$S$-tree} if it connects $S$ in $G$ . A \emph{$k$-proper coloring} of $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ having the property that for every set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exists a…
A graph $G$ is called \emph{chromatic-choosable} if its choice number is equal to its chromatic number, namely $Ch(G)=χ(G)$. Ohba has conjectured that every graph $G$ satisfying $|V(G)|\leq 2χ(G)+1$ is chromatic-choosable. Since each $k$-chromatic graph is a subgraph of a complete $k$-partite graph, we see that Ohba's conjecture is true if and only if it is true for every complete multipartite graph. However, the only complete multipartite graphs for which Ohba's conjecture has been verified are: $K_{3*2,2*(k-3),1}$, $K_{3,2*(k-1)}$, $K_{s+3,2*(k-s-1),1*s}$, $K_{4,3,2*(k-4),1*2}$, and $K_{5,3,…
It is known that complete multipartite graphs are determined by their distance spectrum but not by their adjacency spectrum. The Seidel spectrum of a graph $G$ on more than one vertex does not determine the graph, since any graph obtained from $G$ by Seidel switching has the same Seidel spectrum. We consider $G$ to be determined by its Seidel spectrum, up to switching, if any graph with the same spectrum is switching equivalent to a graph isomorphic to $G$. It is shown that any graph which has the same spectrum as a complete $k$-partite graph is switching equivalent to a complete $k$-partite g…
A clique covering of a graph $G$ is a set of cliques of $G$ such that any edge of $G$ is contained in one of these cliques, and the weight of a clique covering is the sum of the sizes of the cliques in it. The sigma clique cover number $scc(G)$ of a graph $G$, is defined as the smallest possible weight of a clique covering of $G$. Let $ K_t(d) $ denote the complete $ t $-partite graph with each part of size $d$. We prove that for any fixed $d \ge 2$, we have $$\lim_{t \rightarrow \infty} scc(K_t(d))= \frac{d}{2} t\log t.$$ This disproves a conjecture of Davoodi, Javadi and Omoomi.
Consider the following problem. In a school with three classes containing $n$ students each, given that their genders are unknown, find the minimum possible number of triples of same-gender students not all of which are from the same class. Muaengwaeng asked this question and conjectured that the minimum scenario occurs when the classes are all boy, all girl and half-and-half. In this paper, we solve many generalizations of the problem including when the school has more than three classes, when triples are replaced by groups of larger sizes, when the classes are of different sizes, and when ge…
A coloring of a connected graph $G$ is a function $f$ mapping the vertex set of $G$ into the set of all integers. For any subgraph $H$ of $G$, we denote the sum of the values of $f$ on the vertices of $H$ as $f(H)$. If for any integer $k\in \{1,2,\cdots,f(G)\}$, there exists an induced connected subgraph $H$ of $G$ such that $f(H) = k$, then the coloring $f$ is called an IC-coloring of $G$. The IC-index of $G$, denoted as $M(G)$, is the maximum value of $f(G)$ over all possible IC-colorings $f$ of $G$. In this paper, we present a useful method from which a lower bound on the IC-index of any co…
