In bound systems whose constituent particles are heavier than the electron, the dominant radiative correction to energy levels is given by light-fermion (electronic) vacuum polarization. In consequence, relativistic and recoil corrections to the one-loop vacuum-polarization correction are phenomenologically relevant. Here, we generalize the treatment, previously accomplished for systems with orbiting muons, to bound systems of constituents with more general spins: spin-0, spin-1/2, and spin-1. We discuss the application of our more general expressions to various systems of interest, including spinless systems (pionium), muonic hydrogen and deuterium, and devote special attention to the excited non-S states of deuteronium, the bound system of a deuteron and its antiparticle. The obtained energy corrections are of order alpha^5*m_r, where alpha is the fine-structure constant and m_r is the reduced mass.
In 2020 the XENON1T experiment observed an excess of events with an electron recoil energy $E_R$ in the range of $2\,$--$\,3\,$keV. Such an excess can arise from a variety of sources such as solar axions or a neutrino magnetic moment, but also from inelastic scattering of dark matter off the xenon atoms. The recoil energy of the electron then depends on the mass difference of the dark particles. In this paper we show that the annual modulation of both the event rate and the electron recoil energy provide important additional information that allows to distinguish among different theoretical ex…

The current paper summarizes the content of a talk given on vacuum Cherenkov radiation emitted by Lorentz-violating fermions that are described in the context of the Standard-Model Extension. The decay rate will be obtained for various sets of controlling coefficients that will subsequently be constrained using cosmic-ray data.
We study the effective potential and the Renormalization Group(RG) improvement to the effective potential of Higgs boson in a singlet-doublet fermion dark matter extension of the Standard Model(SM), and in general singlet-doublet fermion extension models with several copies of doublet fermions or singlet fermions. We study the stability of the electroweak vacuum with the RG improved effective potential in these models beyond the SM. We study the decay of the electroweak vacuum using the RG improved effective potential in these models beyond the SM. In this study we consider the quantum correct…
We present a particle physics model to explain the observed enhancement in the Xenon-1T data at an electron recoil energy of 2.5 keV. The model is based on a $U(1)$ extension of the Standard Model where the dark sector consists of two essentially mass degenerate Dirac fermions in the sub-GeV region with a small mass splitting interacting with a dark photon. The dark photon is unstable and decays before the big bang nucleosynthesis, which leads to the dark matter constituted of two essentially mass degenerate Dirac fermions. The Xenon-1T excess is computed via the inelastic exothermic scatterin…
We extend the so-called singlet doublet dark matter model, where the dark matter is an admixture of a Standard Model singlet and a pair of electroweak doublet fermions, by a singlet scalar field. The new portal coupling of it with the dark sector not only contributes to the dark matter phenomenology (involving relic density and direct detection limits), but also becomes important for generation of dark matter mass through its vacuum expectation value. While the presence of dark sector fermions affects the stability of the electroweak vacuum adversely, we find this additional singlet is capable…
We make a change of variable in the standard model Higgs field by a fermion operator and show that the latter is responsible for the electroweak vacuum. By computing the vacuum expectation value of this fermion operator in the path integral formalism we determine a relation among the quark vacuum condensates, the quark masses and the intrinsic scale of the theory. We show that the heavy quark vacuum condensates do not justify the hypothesis of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking with only standard model fermions.
The discovery of Standard-Model like Higgs at 125 GeV may raise more questions than the answers it provides. In particular, the hierarchy problem remains unsolved, and the Standard Model Higgs quartic self-coupling becomes negative below the Planck scale, necessitating new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work we investigate a popular scenario, extensions of the Standard Model with vector-like fermion fields, such as the ones present in models with extra dimensions or in Higgs composite models, using a model independent approach. Since fermions decrease the Higgs quartic coupling at …
We present the effects of vector-like fermions (VLF) on the stability of the Higgs electroweak vacuum, using the renormalization group improved Higgs effective potential. We review the calculation of the one-loop beta-functions of the standard model couplings, paying particular attention to the fermion contributions. From this, we derive the VLF contributions to the beta-functions. We also include the significant two-loop contributions to the beta-functions. Using these beta-functions we determine the scale at which the effective Higgs quartic-coupling becomes zero and goes negative, signaling…
We study a scalar singlet dark matter (DM) having mass in sub-TeV regime by extending the minimal scalar singlet DM setup by additional vector like fermions. While the minimal scalar singlet DM satisfies the relic and direct detection constraints for mass beyond TeV only, presence of its portal coupling with vector like fermions opens up additional co-annihilation channels. These vector like fermions also help in achieving electroweak vacuum stability all the way up to Planck scale. We find that for one generation of vector like quarks consisting of a $SU(2)_L$ doublet and a singlet, scalar si…

We have completed the calculation of pure-recoil corrections of order $(Z α)^6$ to Coulombic bound states of two spin-1/2 fermions without approximation in the particle masses. Our result applies to systems of arbitrary mass ratio such as muonium and positronium, and also hydrogen and muonic hydrogen (with the neglect of proton structure effects). We have shown how the two-loop master integrals that occur in the relativistic region can be computed in analytic form, and suggest that the same method can be applied to the three-loop integrals that would be present in a calculation of order $(Z α)…
The $n=2$ and $n=3$ levels for muonic Helium are calculated using a potential that includes all one-loop and recoil effects. Electronic vacuum polarization corrections are calculated using an extension of Kinoshita and Nio method. For $n=2$, the results are $2p_{1/2}-2s_{1/2}=1375.05\pm 1.4$ meV and $2p_{3/2}-2s_{1/2}=1521.65\pm 1.4$ meV, essentially in agreement with the latest summary of the current calculations. The $n=3$ results are summarized in tabular form and give $3p_{1/2}-3s_{1/2}=394.76\pm 0.43$ meV and $3d_{3/2}-3p_{3/2}=111.40$ meV.
We consider the extension of the Standard Model (SM) with an inert Higgs doublet that also contains two or three sets of $SU(2)_L$ triplet fermions with hypercharge zero and analyze the stability of electroweak vacuum for the scenarios. The model represents a Type-III inverse seesaw mechanism for neutrino mass generation with a Dark matter candidate. An effective potential approach calculation with two-loop beta function have been carried out in deciding the fate of the electroweak vacuum. Weak gauge coupling $g_2$ shows a different behaviour as compared to the Standard Model. The modified runn…

We suggest that the pseudo-scalar vacuum field (PSV) in the dark matter (DM) sector of the Universe may be as important as the electromagnetic vacuum field in the baryonic sector. In particular, the spin-spin interaction between the DM fermions, mediated by PSV, may represent the strongest interaction between the DM fermions due to the absence of the electric charge and the magnetic dipole moment. Based on this assumption, we consider the influence of the spin-spin interaction, mediated by PSV, on the spin precession of the DM fermions (e. g. neutralino). In the secular approximation, we obtai…

The current article reviews results on vacuum Cherenkov radiation obtained for modified fermions. Two classes of processes can occur that have completely distinct characteristics. The first one does not include a spin flip of the radiating fermion, whereas the second one does. A résumé will be given of the decay rates for these processes and their properties.
We study the vacuum polarization of planar charged Dirac fermions by a strong Coulomb potential. Induced vacuum charge density is calculated and analyzed at the subcritical and supercritical Coulomb potentials for massless and massive fermions. For the massless case the induced vacuum charge density is localized at the origin when the Coulomb center charge is subcritical while it has a power-law tail when the Coulomb center charge is supercritical. The finite mass contribution into the induced charge due to the vacuum polarization is small and insignificantly distorts the Coulomb potential onl…
We study neutral Fermions pair creation with anomalous magnetic moment from the vacuum by time-independent magnetic-field inhomogeneity as an external background. We show that the problem is technically reduced to the problem of charged-particle creation by an electric step, for which the nonperturbative formulation of strong-field QED is used. We consider a magnetic step given by an analytic function and whose inhomogeneity may vary from a "gradual" to a "sharp" field configuration. We obtain corresponding exact solutions of the Dirac-Pauli equation with this field and calculate pertinent qua…
The photon emission by an ultrarelativistic charged particle in extremely strong magnetic field is analyzed, with vacuum polarization and photon recoil taken into account. The vacuum polarization is treated phenomenologically via refractive index. The photon emission occurs in the synergic (cooperative) synchrotron-Cherenkov process [J. Schwinger, W. Tsai and T. Erber, Annals of Physics, 96 303 (1976)] which is similar to the synchrotron emission rather than to the Cherenkov one. For electrons, the effect of the vacuum polarization on the emission spectrum is not evident even beyond the probab…
