In this paper, we propose a safe adaptive boundary control strategy for a class of parabolic partial differential equation-ordinary differential equation (PDE-ODE) cascaded systems with parametric uncertainties in both the PDE and ODE subsystems. The proposed design is built upon an adaptive Control Barrier Function (aCBF) framework that incorporates high-relative-degree CBFs together with a batch least-squares identification (BaLSI)-based adaptive control that guarantees exact parameter identification in finite time. The proposed controller ensures the positivity, i.e., the safety, of the plant output state that is the furthest state from the control input, as well as the exponential regulation of the overall plant state to zero. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
This paper deals with the backstepping design of observer-based compensators for parabolic ODE-PDE-ODE systems. The latter consist of n coupled parabolic PDEs with distinct diffusion coefficients and spatially-varying coefficients, that are bidirectionally coupled to ODEs at both boundaries. The actuation and sensing appears through these ODEs resulting in a challenging control problem. For this setup a systematic backstepping approach is proposed, in order to determine a state feedback controller and an observer. In particular, the state feedback loop and the observer error dynamics are mappe…
We consider the problem of stabilizing PDE-ODE cascade systems in which the input is applied to the PDE system whose output drives the ODE system. We also consider the dual problem of constructing an observer for ODE-PDE cascade systems in which the output of the ODE system drives the PDE system, whose output is measured. The PDE in these problems is stable and the ODE is unstable. While the ODE system models the plant in both the problems, the PDE system models the actuator in the stabilization problem and the sensor in the dual problem. In the literature, these problems have been solved for …
This paper addresses the derivation of generic and tractable sufficient conditions ensuring the stability of a coupled system composed of a reaction-diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) and a finite-dimensional linear time invariant ordinary differential equation (ODE). The coupling of the PDE with the ODE is located either at the boundaries or in the domain of the reaction-diffusion equation and takes the form of the input and output of the ODE. We investigate boundary Dirichlet/Neumann/Robin couplings, as well as in-domain Dirichlet/Neumann couplings. The adopted approach relies on …
This paper is concerned with the fault diagnosis problem for general linear heterodirectional hyperbolic ODE-PDE systems. A systematic solution is presented for additive time-varying actuator, process and sensor faults in the presence of disturbances. The faults and disturbances are represented by the solutions of finite-dimensional signal models, which allow to take a large class of signals into account. For disturbances, that are only bounded, a threshold for secured fault diagnosis is derived. By applying integral transformations to the system an algebraic fault detection equation to detect…
In this paper we present a continuation method which transforms spatially distributed ODE systems into continuous PDE. We show that this continuation can be performed both for linear and nonlinear systems, including multidimensional, space- and time-varying systems. When applied to a large-scale network, the continuation provides a PDE describing evolution of continuous state approximation that respects the spatial structure of the original ODE. Our method is illustrated by multiple examples including transport equations, Kuramoto equations and heat diffusion equations. As a main example, we p…
This paper studies the problem of designing sampled-data observers and observer-based, sampled-data, output feedback stabilizers for systems with both discrete and distributed, state and output time-delays. The obtained results can be applied to time delay systems of strict-feedback structure, transport Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with nonlocal terms, and feedback interconnections of Ordinary Differential Equations with a transport PDE. The proposed design approach consists in exploiting an existing observer, which features robust exponential convergence of the error when continuous-…
This paper proposes a novel fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme for distributed parameter systems modeled by a class of parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with nonlinear uncertain dynamics. A key feature of the proposed FDI scheme is its capability of dealing with the effects of system uncertainties for accurate FDI. Specifically, an approximate ordinary differential equation (ODE) system is first derived to capture the dominant dynamics of the original PDE system. An adaptive dynamics identification approach using radial basis function neural network is then proposed based…
We propose a new design technique for the stabilization of coupled ODE-PDE systems in feedforward form. In particular, we address the stabilization problem of a one-dimensional transport equation driven by a scalar ODE which is controlled via a cone-bounded nonlinearity. The unforced transport equation is conservative but not asymptotically stable. The proposed technique is inspired by the forwarding approach early introduced in the 90's. Well-posedness and asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system are discussed.
In this work, stabilization of an axonal growth in a neuron associated with the dynamics of tubulin concentration is proposed by designing a boundary control. The dynamics are given by a parabolic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) of the tubulin concentration, with a spatial domain of the axon's length governed by an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) coupled with the tubulin concentration in the growth cone. We propose a novel backstepping method for the coupled PDE-ODE dynamics with a moving boundary, and design a control law for the tubulin concentration flux in the soma. Through employ…
