This paper addresses the derivation of generic and tractable sufficient conditions ensuring the stability of a coupled system composed of a reaction-diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) and a finite-dimensional linear time invariant ordinary differential equation (ODE). The coupling of the PDE with the ODE is located either at the boundaries or in the domain of the reaction-diffusion equation and takes the form of the input and output of the ODE. We investigate boundary Dirichlet/Neumann/Robin couplings, as well as in-domain Dirichlet/Neumann couplings. The adopted approach relies on the spectral reduction of the problem by projecting the trajectory of the PDE into a Hilbert basis composed of the eigenvectors of the underlying Sturm-Liouville operator and yields a set of sufficient stability conditions taking the form of LMIs. We propose numerical examples, consisting of an unstable reaction-diffusion equation and an unstable ODE, such that the application of the derived stability conditions ensure the stability of the resulting coupled PDE-ODE system.
Delay-Differential Equations (DDEs) are the most common representation for systems with delay. However, the DDE representation is limited. In network models with delay, the delayed channels are low-dimensional and accounting for this heterogeneity is not possible in the DDE framework. In addition, DDEs cannot be used to model difference equations. Furthermore, estimation and control of systems in DDE format has proven challenging, despite decades of study. In this paper, we examine alternative representations for systems with delay and provide formulae for conversion between representations. F…

In this work, we present a scalable Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) based framework to verify the stability of a set of linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in one spatial dimension coupled with a set of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) via input-output based interconnection. Our approach extends the newly developed state space representation and stability analysis of coupled PDEs that allows parametrizing the Lyapunov function on $L_2$ with multipliers and integral operators using polynomial kernels of semi-separable class. In particular, under arbitrary well-posed boundary condi…

We develop a theoretical foundation for the application of Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent method (AGD) to the approximation of solutions of a wide class of partial differential equations (PDEs). This is achieved by proving the existence of an invariant set and exponential convergence rates when its preconditioned version (PAGD) is applied to minimize locally Lipschitz smooth, strongly convex objective functionals. We introduce a second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) with a preconditioner built-in and show that PAGD is an explicit time-discretization of this ODE, which requ…
Motivated by engineering applications of subsea installation by deepwater construction vessels in oil drilling, and of aid delivery by unmanned aerial vehicles in disaster relief, we develop output-feedback boundary control of heterodirectional coupled hyperbolic PDEs sandwiched between two ODEs, where the measurement is the output state of one ODE and suffers a time delay. After rewriting the time-delay dynamics as a transport PDE of which the left boundary connects with the sandwiched system, a state observer is built to estimate the states of the overall system of ODE-heterodirectional coup…
We present a methodology for stabilization of general nonlinear systems with actuator dynamics governed by general, quasilinear, first-order hyperbolic PDEs. Since for such PDE-ODE cascades the speed of propagation depends on the PDE state itself (which implies that the prediction horizon cannot be a priori known analytically), the key design challenge is the determination of the predictor state. We resolve this challenge and introduce a PDE predictor-feedback control law that compensates the transport actuator dynamics. Due to the potential formation of shock waves in the solutions of quasili…
This paper studies the problem of designing sampled-data observers and observer-based, sampled-data, output feedback stabilizers for systems with both discrete and distributed, state and output time-delays. The obtained results can be applied to time delay systems of strict-feedback structure, transport Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with nonlocal terms, and feedback interconnections of Ordinary Differential Equations with a transport PDE. The proposed design approach consists in exploiting an existing observer, which features robust exponential convergence of the error when continuous-…
A deep-sea construction vessel is used to install underwater parts of an off-shore oil drilling platform at the designated locations on the seafloor. By using extended Hamilton's principle, a nonlinear PDE system governing the lateral-longitudinal coupled vibration dynamics of the deep-sea construction vessel consisting of a time-varying-length cable with an attached item is derived, and it is linearized at the steady state generating a linear PDE model, which is extended to a more general system including two coupled wave PDEs connected with two interacting ODEs at the uncontrolled boundaries…
We tackle the boundary control and estimation problems for a class of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi PDEs, considering bilateral actuation and sensing, i.e., at the two boundaries of a 1-D spatial domain. First, we solve the nonlinear trajectory generation problem for this type of PDEs, providing the necessary feedforward actions at both boundaries. Second, in order to guarantee trajectory tracking with an arbitrary decay rate, we construct nonlinear, full-state feedback laws employed at the two boundary ends. Third, a nonlinear observer is constructed, using measurements from both boundaries, which …
While for coupled hyperbolic PDEs of first order there now exist numerous PDE backstepping designs, systems with zero speed, i.e., without convection but involving infinite-dimensional ODEs, which arise in many applications, from environmental engineering to lasers to manufacturing, have received virtually no attention. In this paper, we introduce single-input boundary feedback designs for a linear 1-D hyperbolic system with two counterconvecting PDEs and $n$ equations (infinite-dimensional ODEs) with zero characteristic speed. The inclusion of zero-speed states, which we refer to as {\em atac…
Research on stabilization of coupled hyperbolic PDEs has been dominated by the focus on pairs of counter-convecting ("heterodirectional") transport PDEs with distributed local coupling and with controls at one or both boundaries. A recent extension allows stabilization using only one control for a system containing an arbitrary number of coupled transport PDEs that convect at different speeds against the direction of the PDE whose boundary is actuated. In this paper we present a solution to the fully general case, in which the number of PDEs in either direction is arbitrary, and where actuatio…
This paper is a review of results on Optimisation which are perhaps not so standard in the PDE realm. To this end, we consider the problem of deriving the PDEs associated to the optimal control of a system of either ODEs or SDEs with respect to a vector-valued cost functional. Optimisation is considered with respect to a partial ordering generated by a given cone. Since in the vector case minima may not exist, we define vectorial value functions as (Pareto) minimals of the ordering. Our main objective is the derivation of the model PDEs which turn out to be parametric families of HJB single eq…
We present and mathematically analyze an online adjoint algorithm for the optimization of partial differential equations (PDEs). Traditional adjoint algorithms would typically solve a new adjoint PDE at each optimization iteration, which can be computationally costly. In contrast, an online adjoint algorithm updates the design variables in continuous-time and thus constantly makes progress towards minimizing the objective function. The online adjoint algorithm we consider is similar in spirit to the the pseudo-time-stepping, one-shot method which has been previously proposed. Motivated by the …
