We study the statistical properties of the area and the absolute area under the trajectories of subdiffusive random walks. Using different frameworks to describe subdiffusion (as the scaled Brownian motion, fractional Brownian motion, the continuous-time random walk or the Brownian motion in heterogeneous media), we compute the first two moments, the ergodicity breaking parameter for the absolute area and infer a general scaling for the probability density functions of these functionals. We discuss the differences between the statistical properties of the area and the absolute area for the different subdiffusion models and illustrate the experimental interest of our results. Our theoretical findings are supported by Monte Carlo simulations showing an excellent agreement.
We study normal diffusive and subdiffusive processes in a harmonic potential (Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process) on a uniformly growing/contracting domain. Our starting point is a recently derived fractional Fokker-Planck equation, which covers both the case of Brownian diffusion and the case of a subdiffusive Continuous-Time Random Walk (CTRW). We find a high sensitivity of the random walk properties to the details of the domain growth rate, which gives rise to a variety of regimes with extremely different behaviors. At the origin of this rich phenomenology is the fact that the walkers still move wh…
We analyze two models of subdiffusion with stochastic resetting. Each of them consists of two parts: subdiffusion based on the continuous-time random walk (CTRW) scheme and independent resetting events generated uniformly in time according to the Poisson point process. In the first model the whole process is reset to the initial state, whereas in the second model only the position is subject to resets. The distinction between these two models arises from the non-Markovian character of the subdiffusive process. We derive exact expressions for the two lowest moments of the full propagator, stati…
Expanding media are typical in many different fields, e.g. in Biology and Cosmology. In general, a medium expansion (contraction) brings about dramatic changes in the behavior of diffusive transport properties. Here, we focus on such effects when the diffusion process is described by the Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) model. For the case where the jump length and the waiting time probability density functions (pdfs) are long-tailed, we derive a general bifractional diffusion equation which reduces to a normal diffusion equation in the appropriate limit. We then study some particular cases …
Although the title seems self-contradictory, it does not contain a misprint. The model we study is a seemingly minor modification of the "true self-avoiding walk" (TSAW) model of Amit, Parisi, and Peliti in two dimensions. The walks in it are self-repelling up to a characteristic time $T^*$ (which depends on various parameters), but spontaneously (i.e., without changing any control parameter) become self-trapping after that. For free walks, $T^*$ is astronomically large, but on finite lattices the transition is easily observable. In the self-trapped regime, walks are subdiffusive and intermitt…
We consider the dynamics of a separable Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) when the random walker is biased by a velocity field in a uniformly growing domain. Concrete examples for such domains include growing biological cells or lipid vesicles, biofilms and tissues, but also macroscopic systems such as expanding aquifers during rainy periods, or the expanding universe. The considered CTRW can be subdiffusive, normal diffusive or superdiffusive, including the particular case of a Lévy flight. We first consider the case of zero velocity field. In the subdiffusive case, we reveal an interesting …
We consider random walkers that deform the medium as they move, enabling a faster motion in regions which have been recently visited. This induces an effective attraction between walkers mediated by the medium, which can be regarded as a space metric, giving rise to a statistical mechanics toy model either for gravity, motion through deformable matter or adaptable geometry. In the strong-deformability regime, we find that diffusion is initially described by the porous medium equation, thus yielding subdiffusive behavior of an initially localized cloud of particles. Indeed, while the average wi…
A non-Markovian counting process, the `generalized fractional Poisson process' (GFPP) introduced by Cahoy and Polito in 2013 is analyzed. The GFPP contains two index parameters $0<β\leq 1$, $α>0$ and a time scale parameter. Generalizations to Laskin's fractional Poisson distribution and to the fractional Kolmogorov-Feller equation are derived. We develop a continuous time random walk subordinated to a GFPP in the infinite integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. For this stochastic motion, we deduce a `generalized fractional diffusion equation'. In a well-scaled diffusion limit this motion is governed …
In this article, we generalize the recent Discrete Time Random Walk (DTRW) algorithm, which was introduced for the computation of probability densities of fractional diffusion. Although it has the same computational complexity and shares the same desirable features (consistency, conservation of mass, strictly non-negative solutions), it applies to virtually every conceivable Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) limit process, which we define broadly as the limit of a sequence of jump processes with renewals at every jump. Our only restrictive assumption is the boundedness and continuity of coeff…
We investigate the geometric properties of the convex hull over $n$ successive positions of a planar random walk, with a symmetric continuous jump distribution. We derive the large $n$ asymptotic behavior of the mean perimeter. In addition, we compute the mean area for the particular case of isotropic Gaussian jumps. While the leading terms of these asymptotics are universal, the subleading (correction) terms depend on finer details of the jump distribution and describe a "finite size effect" of discrete-time jump processes, allowing one to accurately compute the mean perimeter and the mean ar…
We consider a discrete-time continuous-space random walk under the constraints that the number of returns to the origin (local time) and the total area under the walk are fixed. We first compute the joint probability of an excursion having area $a$ and returning to the origin for the first time after time $τ$. We then show how condensation occurs when the total area constraint is increased: an excursion containing a finite fraction of the area emerges. Finally we show how the phenomena generalises previously studied cases of condensation induced by several constraints and how it is related to …
We consider the generating function of the algebraic area of lattice walks, evaluated at a root of unity, and its relation to the Hofstadter model. In particular, we obtain an expression for the generating function of the n-th moments of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian in terms of a complete elliptic integral, evaluated at a rational function. This in turn gives us both exact and asymptotic formulas for these moments.
These notes from a graduate class at the Unuversidad Autonoma de Madrid analyze a search behavior known as Area Resticted Search (ARS), widespread in the animal kingdom, and optimal when the resources that one is after are "patchy". In the first section we study the importance of the behavior in animal and its dependence on the dopamine as a indicator of reward. In the second section we put together a genetic algorithm to determine the optimality of ARS and its characteristics. Finally, we relate ARS to a type of random walks known as "Levy Walks", in which the probability of jumping at a dist…
We study the enumeration of closed walks of given length and algebraic area on the honeycomb lattice. Using an irreducible operator realization of honeycomb lattice moves, we map the problem to a Hofstadter-like Hamiltonian and show that the generating function of closed walks maps to the grand partition function of a system of particles with exclusion statistics of order $g=2$ and an appropriate spectrum, along the lines of a connection previously established by two of the authors. Reinterpreting the results in terms of the standard Hofstadter spectrum calls for a mixture of $g=1$ (fermion) a…
Area law violations for entanglement entropy in the form of a square root has recently been studied for one-dimensional frustration-free quantum systems based on the Motzkin walks and their variations. Here we consider a Motzkin walk with a different Hilbert space on each step of the walk spanned by elements of a {\it Symmetric Inverse Semigroup} with the direction of each step governed by its algebraic structure. This change alters the number of paths allowed in the Motzkin walk and introduces a ground state degeneracy sensitive to boundary perturbations. We study the frustration-free spin ch…
