This article surveys nonlinear model reduction methods that remain effective in regimes where linear reduced-space approximations are intrinsically inefficient, such as transport-dominated problems with wave-like phenomena and moving coherent structures, which are commonly associated with the Kolmogorov barrier. The article organizes nonlinear model reduction techniques around three key elements -- nonlinear parametrizations, reduced dynamics, and online solvers -- and categorizes existing approaches into transformation-based methods, online adaptive techniques, and formulations that combine generic nonlinear parametrizations with instantaneous residual minimization.
Foundations of a new projection-based model reduction approach for convection dominated nonlinear fluid flows are summarized. In this method the evolution of the flow is approximated in the Lagrangian frame of reference. Global basis functions are used to approximate both the state and the position of the Lagrangian computational domain. It is demonstrated that in this framework, certain wave-like solutions exhibit low-rank structure and thus, can be efficiently compressed using relatively few global basis. The proposed approach is successfully demonstrated for the reduction of several simple …
In the literature on projection-based nonlinear model order reduction for fluid dynamics problems, it is often claimed that due to modal truncation, a projection-based reduced-order model (PROM) does not resolve the dissipative regime of the turbulent energy cascade and therefore is numerically unstable. Efforts at addressing this claim have ranged from attempting to model the effects of the truncated modes to enriching the classical subspace of approximation in order to account for the truncated phenomena. This paper challenges this claim. Exploring the relationship between projection-based m…
This work presents a method for constructing online-efficient reduced models of large-scale systems governed by parametrized nonlinear scalar conservation laws. The solution manifolds induced by transport-dominated problems such as hyperbolic conservation laws typically exhibit nonlinear structures, which means that traditional model reduction methods based on linear approximations are inefficient when applied to these problems. In contrast, the approach introduced in this work derives reduced approximations that are nonlinear by explicitly composing global transport dynamics with locally line…
Model order reduction (MOR) techniques have always struggled in compressing information for advection dominated problems. Their linear nature does not allow to accelerate the slow decay of the Kolmogorov $N$--width of these problems. In the last years, new nonlinear algorithms obtained smaller reduced spaces. In these works only the offline phase of these algorithms was shown. In this work, we study MOR algorithms for unsteady parametric advection dominated hyperbolic problems, giving a complete offline and online description and showing the time saving in the online phase. We propose an arbit…
This work introduces a new approach to reduce the computational cost of solving partial differential equations (PDEs) with convection-dominated solutions: model reduction with implicit feature tracking. Traditional model reduction techniques use an affine subspace to reduce the dimensionality of the solution manifold and, as a result, yield limited reduction and require extensive training due to the slowly decaying Kolmogorov $n$-width of convection-dominated problems. The proposed approach circumvents the slowly decaying $n$-width limitation by using a nonlinear approximation manifold systema…
This work presents a model reduction approach for problems with coherent structures that propagate over time such as convection-dominated flows and wave-type phenomena. Traditional model reduction methods have difficulties with these transport-dominated problems because propagating coherent structures typically introduce high-dimensional features that require high-dimensional approximation spaces. The approach proposed in this work exploits the locality in space and time of propagating coherent structures to derive efficient reduced models. Full-model solutions are approximated locally in time…
We propose an efficient residual minimization technique for the nonlinear model-order reduction of parameterized hyperbolic partial differential equations. Our nonlinear approximation space is a span of snapshots evaluated on a shifted spatial domain, and we compute our reduced approximation via residual minimization. To speed-up the residual minimization, we compute and minimize the residual on a (preferably small) subset of the mesh, the so-called reduced mesh. Due to the nonlinearity of our approximation space we show that, similar to the solution, the residual also exhibits transport-type …
Motivated by challenges in Earth mantle convection, we present a massively parallel implementation of an Eulerian-Lagrangian method for the advection-diffusion equation in the advection-dominated regime. The advection term is treated by a particle-based, characteristics method coupled to a block-structured finite-element framework. Its numerical and computational performance is evaluated in multiple, two- and three-dimensional benchmarks, including curved geometries, discontinuous solutions, pure advection, and it is applied to a coupled non-linear system modeling buoyancy-driven convection in…
In this work, a flexible higher-order space-time adaptive finite element approximation of convection-dominated transport with coupled fluid flow is developed and studied. Convection-dominated transport is a challenging subproblem in poromechanics in which coupled transport with flow, chemical reaction and mechanical response in porous media is considered. Key ingredients are the arbitrary degree discontinuous Galerkin time discretization of the primal and dual problems for the Dual Weighted Residual (DWR) approach, an a posteriori error estimation for the transport problem coupled with flow an…

In this work, a multirate in time approach resolving the different time scales of a convection-dominated transport and coupled fluid flow is developed and studied in view of goal-oriented error control by means of the Dual Weighted Residual (DWR) method. Key ingredients are an arbitrary degree discontinuous Galerkin time discretization of the underlying subproblems, an a posteriori error representation for the transport problem coupled with flow and its implementation using space-time tensor-product spaces. The error representation allows the separation of the temporal and spatial discretizati…

This work addresses model order reduction for complex moving fronts, which are transported by advection or through a reaction-diffusion process. Such systems are especially challenging for model order reduction since the transport cannot be captured by linear reduction methods. Moreover, topological changes, such as splitting or merging of fronts pose difficulties for many nonlinear reduction methods and the small non-vanishing support of the underlying partial differential equations dynamics makes most nonlinear hyper-reduction methods infeasible. We propose a new decomposition method togethe…

In this paper, we consider flow and transport problems in thin domains. The mathematical model considered in the paper is described by a system of equations for velocity, pressure, and concentration, where the flow is described by the Stokes equations and the transport is described by an unsteady convection-diffusion equation with non-homogeneous boundary conditions on walls (reactive boundaries). We start with the finite element approximation of the problem on unstructured grids and use it as a reference solution for two and three-dimensional model problems. Fine grid approximation resolves c…
The Kolmogorov $n$-width of the solution manifolds of transport-dominated problems can decay slowly. As a result, it can be challenging to design efficient and accurate reduced order models (ROMs) for such problems. To address this issue, we propose a new learning-based projection method to construct nonlinear adaptive ROMs for transport problems. The construction follows the offline-online decomposition. In the offline stage, we train a neural network to construct adaptive reduced basis dependent on time and model parameters. In the online stage, we project the solution to the learned reduced…
We present a population control method with sampling and regulation steps for Monte Carlo particles involved in the numerical simulation of a transport equation. We recall in the first section the difficulties related to the variance reduction methods in the general framework of transport equations; we continue with a brief presentation of the mathematical tools invoked when solving the radiative transport equations and we focus on the importance of the emission and control of existing Monte Carlo particles. The next part discusses several novel methods based on the cell-based population contr…
