Kinematic and spectroscopic studies in the past few years have revealed coherent azimuthal metallicity variations across the Milky Way's disk that may be the result of dynamical processes associated with non-axisymmetric features of the Galaxy. At the same time, stellar kinematics from Gaia have uncovered ridge-like features in the velocity space, raising the question of whether these chemical and dynamical substructures share a common origin. Using a sample of disk stars from Gaia DR3, we find that azimuthal metallicity variations are correlated with kinematic ridges in the V_phi-R plane, suggesting a shared origin. We utilize a suite of Milky Way test-particle simulations to assess the role of transient spiral arms, the bar, and interactions with a Sagittarius-like dwarf galaxy in simultaneously shaping both chemical and kinematic substructures. Among the physical mechanisms explored, bar and spiral arm interactions are the ones that consistently reproduce both the chemo-kinematic features and alignment observed in the Gaia data. While our model of an interaction with a Sagittarius-like dwarf galaxy can also induce kinematic and metallicity substructure, the amplitude of the azimuthal metallicity variations are too weak, suggesting this is likely not the dominant influence. Although additional contributing processes cannot be ruled out, the azimuthal metallicity variations observed in Gaia are best explained by a dynamical origin. Our results support the view that that azimuthal metallicity variations in the Galaxy are driven by similar dynamical mechanisms responsible for generating the kinematic ridges and co-moving groups.
The solar neighborhood contains disc stars that have recently crossed spiral arms in the Galaxy. We propose that boundaries in local velocity distributions separate stars that have recently crossed or been perturbed by a particular arm from those that haven't. Ridges in the stellar velocity distributions constructed from the second Gaia data release trace orbits that could have touched nearby spiral arms at apocentre or pericentre. The multiple ridges and arcs seen in local velocity distributions are consistent with the presence of multiple spiral features and different pattern speeds and impl…
We revisit the diagonal ridge feature (diagonal distributions in the $R, v_ϕ$ plane) found in $Gaia$ and present timing analysis for it between Galactocentric distances of $R=7.5$ and 12 \,kpc, using Main-Sequence-Turn-Off and OB stars selected from the LAMOST Galactic spectroscopic surveys. We recover the ridge pattern in the $R$--$v_ϕ$ plane color coded by mean radial velocity and find this feature is presented from very young (OB stars, few hundred \,Myr) to very old populations ($τ$ = 9$-$14 \,Gyr). Meanwhile, some ridge features are also revealed in the metallicity [Fe/H], [$α$/Fe] and $v…
Gaia DR2 has revealed new small-scale and large-scale patterns in the phase-space distribution of stars in the Milky Way. In cylindrical Galactic coordinates $(R,ϕ,z)$, ridge-like structures can be seen in the \vphiR{} plane and asymmetric arch-like structures in the \vphivR{} plane. We show that the ridges are also clearly present when the third dimension of the \vphiR{} plane is represented by $\langle z \rangle$, $\langle V_z \rangle$, $\langle V_R \rangle$, $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$ and $\langle[α/{\rm Fe}]\rangle$. The maps suggest that stars along the ridges lie preferentially close to th…
Super metal-rich (SMR) stars in the solar neighborhood are thought to be born in the inner disk and came to present location by radial migration, which is most intense at the co-rotation resonance (CR) of the Galactic bar. In this work, we show evidence for the CR origin of SMR stars in LAMOST-Gaia by detecting six ridges and undulations in the phi versus Lz space coded by median VR, following a similar slope of -8 km/s kpc/deg. The slope is predicted by Monario et al.'s model for CR of a large and slow Galactic bar. For the first time, we show the variation of angular momentum with azimuths f…
We explore the origin of phase-space substructures revealed by the second Gaia data release in the disc of the Milky Way, such as the ridges in the $V_ϕ$-$r$ plane, the undulations in the $V_ϕ$-$r$-$V_r$ space and the streams in the $V_ϕ$-$V_r$ plane. We use a collisionless N-body simulation with co-spatial thin and thick discs, along with orbit integration, to study the orbital structure close to the Outer Lindblad Resonance (OLR) of the bar. We find that a prominent, long-lived ridge is formed in the $V_ϕ$-$r$ plane due to the OLR which translates to streams in the $V_ϕ$-$V_r$ plane and exam…
The second data release of the Gaia mission has revealed, in stellar velocity and action space, multiple ridges, the exact origin of which is still debated. Recently, we demonstrated that a large Galactic bar with pattern speed 39 km/s/kpc does create most of the observed ridges. Among those ridges, the Hercules moving group would then be associated to orbits trapped at the co-rotation resonance of the bar. Here we show that a distinctive prediction of such a model is that the angular momentum of Hercules at the Sun's radius must significantly decrease with increasing Galactocentric azimuth, i…
The second data release from ESA's Gaia mission has revealed many ridge-like structures in the velocity distribution of the Milky Way. We show that these can arise naturally from winding transient spiral structure that is commonly seen in N-body simulations of disk galaxies. We construct test particle models of the winding spiral structure, and compare the resulting distribution of orbits with the observed two-dimensional velocity distribution in the extended solar neighbourhood and with the distribution of rotational velocities over 8 kpc along the Sun--Galactic-centre--Galactic anti-centre l…
We have investigated the distributions of stellar azimuthal and radial velocity components $V_Φ$ and $V_{R}$ in the vertical position-velocity plane $Z$-$V_{Z}$ across the Galactic disc of $6.34 \lesssim R \lesssim 12.34$\,kpc and $|Φ| \lesssim 7.5^{\circ}$ using a Gaia and Gaia-LAMOST sample of stars. As found in previous works, the distributions exhibit significant spiral patterns. The $V_{R}$ distributions also show clear quadrupole patterns, which are the consequence of the well-known tilt of the velocity ellipsoid. The observed spiral and quadrupole patterns in the phase space plane vary …
Using of a new N-body simulation, as well as Gaia DR2/EDR3 data complemented by data from the Galah, APOGEE, LAMOST surveys, we explore the possible link between the MW spiral arms, RVphi-ridges and moving groups in local UV space. We show that the tightly wound main spiral arms in the N-body model can be successfully identified using overdensities in angular momentum (AM) or guiding space, as well as in the distribution of dynamically cold stars close to their guiding centers. Stars in the AM overdensities that travel over many kpc in radius trace extended density ridges in RVphi space and ov…
The stellar velocity distribution in the Solar Neighbourhood displays kinematic substructures, which are possibly signatures of the bar and spiral arms of the Milky Way and of previous accretion events. These kinematic substructures -- moving groups -- can be thought of as continuous manifolds in the 6D phase space, and the ridges in the $V_ϕ-R$ and arches in the $V_ϕ-V_R$ plane, discovered with the Gaia mission, as projections of these manifolds. We develop and apply a methodology to perform a blind search for substructure in the Gaia EDR3 6D data, and obtain a sampling of the manifolds. The …
The second data release of the Gaia mission has revealed a very rich structure in local velocity space. In terms of in-plane motions, this rich structure is also seen as multiple ridges in the actions of the axisymmetric background potential of the Galaxy. These ridges are probably related to a combination of effects from ongoing phase-mixing and resonances from the spiral arms and the bar. We have recently developed a method to capture the behaviour of the stellar phase-space distribution function at a resonance, by re-expressing it in terms of a new set of canonical actions and angles variab…
The quality and quantity of 6D stellar position-velocity measurements in the second Gaia data release (DR2) allows to study small-scale structure in the orbit distribution of the Galactic disc beyond the immediate Solar neighborhood. We investigate the distribution of orbital actions $(J_R,J_ϕ=L_z,J_z)$ of $\sim 3.5$ million stars within $1.5~\text{kpc}$ of the Sun, for which precise actions can be calculated from Gaia DR2 alone. This distribution $n(J_R,L_z)$ reveals a remarkable amount of sub-structure. The known moving groups in the $(U,V)$-plane of the Solar neighborhood correspond to over…
We use the proper motions (PM) of half a million red giant stars in Large Magellanic Cloud measured by Gaia to construct a 2d kinematic map of mean PM and its dispersion across the galaxy, out to 7 Kpc from its centre. We then explore a range of dynamical models and measure the rotation curve, mean azimuthal velocity, velocity dispersion profiles, and the orientation of the galaxy. We find that the circular velocity reaches 90 km/s at 5 Kpc, and that the velocity dispersion ranges from 30-40 km/s in the galaxy centre to 15-20 km/s at 7 Kpc.
Recently, the Gaia data release 2 (DR2) showed us the richness in the kinematics of the Milky Way disk. Of particular interest is the presence of ridges covering the stellar velocity distribution, $V_ϕ-R$; as shown by others, it is likely that these ridges are the signature of phase mixing, transient spirals, or the bar. Here, with a Galactic model containing both: bar and spirals, we found the same pattern of ridges extending from the inner to the outer disk. Interestingly, ridges in the $V_ϕ-R$ plane correlate extremely well with wiggles in the computed rotation curve (RC). Hence, although t…
We investigate the kinematic-chemical distribution of Red Giant Branch (RGB) stars from the LAMOST survey crossed matched with Gaia DR2 proper motions, and present time tagging for the well-known ridge structures (diagonal distributions for $V_R$ in the $R$, $V_ϕ$ plane) in the range of Galactocentric distance $R$ = 8 to 15 kpc. We detect six ridge structures, including five ridges apparent in the radial velocity distribution and three ridges apparent in the vertical velocity, the sensitive time of which to the perturbations are from young population (0$-$3 Gyr) to old population (9$-$14 Gyr).…
From a sample of 15651 RR Lyrae with accurate proper motions in Gaia DR2, we measure the azimuthally averaged kinematics of the inner stellar halo between 1.5 kpc and 20 kpc from the Galactic centre. We find that their kinematics are strongly radially anisotropic, and their velocity ellipsoid nearly spherically aligned over this volume. Only in the inner regions $\lesssim$ 5 kpc does the anisotropy significantly fall (but still with $β>$ 0.25) and the velocity ellipsoid tilt towards cylindrical alignment. In the inner regions, our sample of halo stars rotates at up to 50 km s$^{-1}$, which may…
Since Gaia DR2 was released, many velocity structures in the disk have been revealed such as large scale ridge-like patterns in the phase space. Both kinematic information and stellar elemental abundances are needed to reveal their evolution history. We have used labels from the APOGEE survey to predict elemental abundances for a huge amount of low resolution spectra from the LAMOST survey. Deep learning with artificial neural networks can automatically draw on physically sensible features in the spectrum for their predictions. Abundances of 12 individual elements: [C/Fe], [N/Fe], [O/Fe], [Mg/…
We present the first detailed study of the behaviour of the stellar proper motion across the entire Galactic Anti-centre area visible in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. We use recalibrated SDSS astrometry in combination with positions from {\it Gaia} DR1 to provide tangential motion measurements with a systematic uncertainty $<$5 kms$^{-1}$ for the Main Sequence stars at the distance of the Monoceros Ring. We demonstrate that Monoceros members rotate around the Galaxy with azimuthal speeds of ~230 kms$^{-1}$, only slightly lower than that of the Sun. Additionally, both vertical and azimutha…
We study a set of solar neighborhood ($d < 3$ kpc) stars from Gaia Data Release 2 to determine azimuthal star count differences, i.e., left and right of the line from the Galactic center through the sun - and compare these differences north and south. In this companion paper to Gardner et al. (2020), we delineate our procedures to remove false asymmetries from sampling effects, incompleteness, and/or interloper populations, as this is crucial to tests of axisymmetry. Particularly, we have taken care to make appropriate selections of magnitude, color, in-plane Galactocentric radius and Galactic…
A model of the Galaxy with the outer ring R1R2 can explain the observed distribution of the radial, VR, and azimuthal, VT, velocity components along the Galactocentric distance, R, derived from the Gaia EDR3 data. We selected stars from the Gaia EDR3 catalogue with reliable parallaxes, proper motions and line-of-sight velocities lying near the Galactic plane, |z|<200 pc, and in the sector of the Galactocentic angles |theta|<15 degrees and calculated the median velocities VR and VT in small bins along the distance R. The distribution of observed velocities appears to have some specific features…
Using a sample of nearly 140,000 red clump stars selected from the LAMOST and Gaia Galactic surveys, we have mapped mean vertical velocity $\overline{V_{z}}$ in the $X$-$Y$ plane for a large volume of the Galactic disk (6 $< R < 16$ kpc; $-20 <ϕ< 50^{\circ}$; $|Z| < 1$ kpc). A clear signature where $\overline{V_{z}}$ increases with $R$ is detected for the chemically thin disk. The signature for the thick disk is however not significant, in line with the hot nature of this disk component. For the thin disk, the warp signature shows significant variations in both radial and azimuthal directions,…
{\it Gaia} Data Release 2 (DR2) revealed that the Milky Way contains significant indications of departures from equilibrium in the form of asymmetric features in the phase space density of stars in the Solar neighborhood. One such feature is the $z$--$v_z$ phase spiral, interpreted as the response of the disk to the influence of a perturbation perpendicular to the disk plane, which could be external (e.g., a satellite) or internal (e.g., the bar or spiral arms). In this work we use {\it Gaia} DR3 to dissect the phase spiral by dividing the local data set into groups with similar azimuthal acti…
The perturbation mechanism of the Galactic disk has puzzled us for a long time. The imprints from perturbations provide important diagnostics on the disk formation and evolution. Here we try to constrain when the vertical perturbation took place in the disk by tracking the phase mixing history. Firstly, we clearly depict the spiral structures of radial ($v_R$) and azimuthal ($v_ϕ$) velocities in the phase space of the vertical position and velocity ($z$-$v_z$) with 723,871 LAMOST-Gaia combined stars. Then, we investigate the variation of the spirals with stellar age ($τ$) by dividing the sampl…
Gaia DR2 has provided an unprecedented wealth of information about the kinematics of stars in the Solar neighbourhood, and has highlighted the degree of features in the Galactic disc. We confront the data with a range of bar and spiral models in both action-angle space, and the $R_{\mathrm{G}}-v_ϕ$ plane. We find that the phase mixing induced by transient spiral structure creates ridges and arches in the local kinematics which are consistent with the Gaia data. We are able to produce a qualitatively good match to the data when combined with a bar with a variety of pattern speeds, and show that…
We apply a simple axisymmetric disc model to 218 Galactic Cepheids whose accurate measurements of the distance and velocities are obtained by cross-matching an existing Cepheids catalogue with the Gaia DR2 data. Our model fit determines the "local centrifugal speed", $V_\mathrm{c}$ $-$ defined as the rotation speed required to balance the local radial gravitational force $-$ at the Sun's location to be $V_{c}(R_0)=236\pm 3$ km s$^{-1}$ and the Sun's azimuthal and radial peculiar motions to be $V_{\odot}=12.4\pm0.7$ km s$^{-1}$ and $U_{\odot}=7.7\pm0.9$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. These results …
The present paper is the culminating one of a series aimed to contribute to the understanding of the kinematic structures of the solar neighbourhood (SN), explaining the origin of the Local Arm and relating the moving groups with the spiral-arms resonances in the disk. With a model for the Galactic potential, with the Sun inside the spiral corotation resonance (CR), we integrate the 2D orbits of test particles distributed in birthplaces along the main spiral arms, the Local Arm, and in the axisymmetric disk. A comparison of the resulting U-V plane of the SN with that provided by Gaia DR2 confi…
We present the results of a multi-component kinematic model of a large sample of RR Lyrae detected by $Gaia$. By imposing a four-fold symmetry and employing $Gaia$ proper motions, we are able to infer the behaviour of the velocity ellipsoid between $\approx3$ and $\approx30$ kpc from the centre of the Galaxy. We detect the presence of two distinct components: a dominant non-rotating halo-like population and a much smaller rotating disc-like population. We demonstrate that the halo RR Lyrae can be described as a superposition of an isotropic and radially-biased parts. The radially-biased portio…
We investigate the three-dimensional asymmetrical kinematics and present time stamps of the Milky Way disk between Galactocentric distances of $R=12$ and 15 \,kpc, using red clump stars selected from the LAMOST Galactic survey, also with proper motion measurements provided by the Gaia DR2. We discover velocity substructure above the Galactic plane corresponding to a density dip found recently ("south-middle opposite" density structure[R $\sim$ 12-15 \,kpc, Z $\sim$ 1.5 \,kpc] discovered in \citet{Wang2018b, Wang2018c}) in the radial and azimuthal velocity. For the vertical velocity, we detect …
We have determined bulk proper motions (PMs) for 31 LMC GCs from Gaia eDR3 and Hubble Space Telescope data using multiple independent analysis techniques. Combined with literature values for distances, line-of-sight velocities and existing bulk PMs, we extract full 6D phase-space information for 32 clusters, allowing us to examine the kinematics of the LMC GC system in detail. Except for two GCs (NGC 2159 and NGC 2210) for which high velocities suggest they are not long-term members of the LMC system, the data are consistent with a flattened configuration that rotates like the stellar disk. Th…
Within Rotation Curves (RC) is encoded the kinematical state of the stellar disc as well as information about the dynamical mechanisms driving the secular evolution of galaxies. To explain the characteristic features of RCs that arise by the influence of spiral patterns and bar, we study the kinematics of the stellar disc in a set of spiral galaxy models specifically tailored for this purpose. We find that, for our models, the induced non-circular motions are more prominent for spirals with larger pitch angle, the ones typical in late type galaxies. Moreover, inside corotation, stars rotate sl…
The Milky Way spiral arms are well established from star counts as well as from the locus of molecular clouds and other young objects, however, they have only recently started to be observed from a kinematics point of view. Using the kinematics of thin disc stars in Gaia EDR3 around the extended solar neighbourhood, we create x-y projections coloured by the radial, residual rotational, and vertical Galactocentric velocities ($U,ΔV,W$). The maps are rich in substructures and reveal the perturbed state of the Galactic disc. We find that local differences between rotational velocity and the azimu…
We present the age-velocity dispersion relation (AVR) in three dimensions in the solar neighbourhood using 3,564 commonly observed sub-giant/red-giant branch stars selected from LAMOST, which gives the age and radial velocity, and \emph{Gaia}, which measures the distance and proper motion. The stars are separated into metal-poor (${\rm [Fe/H]<-0.2}$\,dex and metal-rich (${\rm [Fe/H]>-0.2}$\,dex) groups, so that the metal-rich stars are mostly $α$-poor, while the metal-poor group are mostly contributed by $α$-enhanced stars. Thus, the old and metal-poor stars likely belong to the chemically def…
Aiming at discriminating different gravitational potential models of the Milky Way, we perform tests based on the kinematic data powered by the Gaia DR2 astrometry, over a large range of $(R,z)$ locations. Invoking the complete form of Jeans equations that admit three integrals of motion, we use the independent $R$- and $z$-directional equations as two discriminators ($T_R$ and $T_z$). We apply the formula for spatial distributions of radial and vertical velocity dispersions proposed by Binney et al., and successfully extend it to azimuthal components, $σ_θ(R,z)$ and $V_θ(R,z)$; the analytic f…
Gaia DR2 has delivered full-sky 6-D measurements for millions of stars, and the quest to understand the dynamics of our Galaxy has entered a new phase. Our aim is to reveal and characterize the kinematic sub-structure of the different Galactic neighbourhoods, to form a picture of their spatial evolution that can be used to infer the Galactic potential, its evolution and its components. We take ~5 million stars in the Galactic disk from the Gaia DR2 catalogue and build the velocity distribution of many different Galactic Neighbourhoods distributed along 5 kpc in Galactic radius and azimuth. We …
The precision of the Gaia data offers a unique opportunity to study the internal velocity field of star clusters. We develop and validate a forward-modelling method for the internal motions of stars in a cluster. The model allows an anisotropic velocity dispersion matrix and linear velocity gradient describing rotation and shear, combines radial velocities available for a subset of stars, and accounts for contamination from background sources via a mixture model. We apply the method to Gaia DR2 data of the Hyades cluster and its tidal tails, dividing and comparing the kinematics of stars withi…
Context: The accretion history of the Milky Way is still unknown, despite the recent discovery of stellar systems that stand out in terms of their energy-angular momentum space, such as Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage. In particular, it is still unclear how these groups are linked and to what extent they are well-mixed. Aims: We investigate the similarities and differences in the properties between the prograde and retrograde (counter-rotating) stars and set those results in context by using the properties of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage, Thamnos/Sequoia, and other suggested accreted populations. Methods: We…
Mapping the Galactic disk with the LAMOST and Gaia Red clump sample: VIII: Mapping the kinematics of the Galactic disk using mono-age and mono-abundance stellar populations
$Gaia$ DR2 has provided an unprecedented wealth of information about the positions and motions of stars in our Galaxy, and has highlighted the degree of disequilibria in the disc. As we collect data over a wider area of the disc it becomes increasingly appealing to start analysing stellar actions and angles, which specifically label orbit space, instead of their current phase space location. Conceptually, while $\bar{x}$ and $\bar{v}$ tell us about the potential and local interactions, grouping in action puts together stars that have similar frequencies and hence similar responses to dynamical…
The ellipsoid of stellar random motions is a fundamental ingredient of galaxy dynamics. Yet it has long been difficult to constrain this component in disks others than the Milky Way. This article presents the modeling of the azimuthal-to-radial axis ratio of the velocity ellipsoid of galactic disks from stellar dispersion maps using integral field spectroscopy data of the CALIFA survey. The measured azimuthal anisotropy is shown to be not strongly dependent on the assumed vertical-to-radial dispersion ratio of the ellipsoid. The anisotropy distribution shows a large diversity in the orbital st…
The Galactic disk exhibits complex chemical and dynamical substructure thought to be induced by the bar, spiral arms, and satellites. Here, we explore the chemical signatures of bar resonances in action and velocity space and characterize the differences between the signatures of corotation and higher-order resonances using test particle simulations. Thanks to recent surveys, we now have large datasets containing metallicities and kinematics of stars outside the solar neighborhood. We compare the simulations to the observational data from Gaia EDR3 and LAMOST DR5 and find weak evidence for a s…

(Abridged) Recent spectroscopic surveys have begun to explore the Galactic disk system outside the solar neighborhood on the basis of large data samples. In this way, they provide valuable information for testing spatial and temporal variations of disk structure kinematics and chemical evolution. We used a Gaussian mixture model algorithm, as a rigurous mathematical approach, to separate in the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] plane a clean disk star subsample from the Gaia-ESO survey internal data release 2. We find that the sample is separated into five groups associated with major Galactic components; th…
Understanding the history and the evolution of the Milky Way disc is one of the main goals of modern astrophysics. We study the velocity dispersion behaviour of Galactic disc stars as a function of the [Mg/Fe] ratio, which can be used as a proxy of relative age. This key relation is essential to constrain the formation mechanisms of the disc stellar populations as well as the cooling processes. We used the recommended parameters and chemical abundances of 7800 FGK Milky Way field stars from the second internal data release of the Gaia-ESO Survey. These stars were observed with the GIRAFFE spec…
To illustrate the potential of GDR2, we provide a first look at the kinematics of the Milky Way disc, within a radius of several kiloparsecs around the Sun. We benefit for the first time from a sample of 6.4 million F-G-K stars with full 6D phase-space coordinates, precise parallaxes, and precise Galactic cylindrical velocities . From this sample, we extracted a sub-sample of 3.2 million giant stars to map the velocity field of the Galactic disc from $\sim$5~kpc to $\sim$13~kpc from the Galactic centre and up to 2~kpc above and below the plane. We also study the distribution of 0.3 million sol…
We simultaneously model the gravitational potential and phase space distribution function (DF) of giant stars near the Sun using the {\it Gaia} DR2 radial velocity catalog. We assume that the Galaxy is in equilibrium and is symmetric about both the spin axis of the disk and the Galactic midplane. The potential is taken as a sum of terms that nominally represent contributions from the gas disk, stellar disk, bulge, and dark matter halo. Our DF model for the giants comprise two components to account for a mix of thin and thick disk stars. The DF for each component is described by an analytic fun…
Taking advantage of the recent Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), we map chemical inhomogeneities in the Milky Way's disc out to a distance of $\sim$ 4 kpc from the Sun, using different samples of bright giant stars. The samples are selected using effective temperatures and surface gravities from the GSP-Spec module, and are expected to trace stellar populations of different typical age. The cool (old) giants exhibit a relatively smooth radial metallicity gradient with an azimuthal dependence. Binning in Galactic azimuth $ϕ$, the slope gradually varies from $d$[M/H]$/dR \sim -0.054$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ at …
