In this paper, we presents a method for factoring morphisms between arithmetic surfaces based on the regularity of arithmetic surfaces. Using this factorization, we derive a Riemann-Hurwitz formula satisfied by the ramification divisor and the canonical divisor on arithmetic surfaces. We also extend this formula to Arakelov theory.
We prove an analogue of the Riemann-Hurwitz theorem for computing Euler characteristics of pullbacks of coherent sheaves through finite maps of smooth projective varieties, subject only to the condition that the irreducible components of the branch and ramification locus have simple normal crossings.
M. Levine proved an enrichment of the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula to an equality in the Grothendieck-Witt group of quadratic forms. In its strongest form, Levine's theorem includes a technical hypothesis on ramification relevant in positive characteristic. We consider wild ramification at points whose residue fields are non-separable extensions of the ground field k. We show an analogous Riemann-Hurwitz formula, and consider an example suggested by S. Saito.
We relate Fubini's theorem for Euler characteristics to Riemann-Hurwtiz formulae, and reprove a classical result of Iversen. The techniques used include algebraic geometry, complex geometry, and model theory. Possible applications to the study of wild ramification in finite characteristic are discussed.
In this article, we mainly obtain the Riemann-Hurwitz theorems for harmonic morphisms on (vertex-weighted) metric graphs or metrized complexes of algebraic curves, inspired of the recent work on harmonic morphisms of graphs or metrized complexes due to many researchers. By making use of these Riemann-Hurwitz theorems, we then systematically establish the second main theorems for harmonic morphisms on finite graphs, vertex-weighted graphs, (vertex-weighted) metric graphs or metrized complexes of algebraic curves, from the viewpoint of Nevanlinna theory.
Given a finite morphism $φ:Y\to X$ of quasi-smooth Berkovich curves over a complete, algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $0$, we prove a Riemann-Hurwitz formula relating their Euler-Poincaré characteristics (calculated using De Rham cohomology of their overconvergent structure sheaf). The main tools are $p$-adic Runge's theorem together with valuation polygons of analytic functions. Using the results obtained, we provide another point of view on Riemann-Hurwitz formula for finite morphisms of curves over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic.
Let q>1 denote an integer relatively prime to 2,3,7 and for which G=PSL(2,q) is a Hurwitz group for a smooth projective curve X defined over C. We compute the G-module structure of the Riemann-Roch space L(D), where D is an invariant divisor on X of positive degree. This depends on a computation of the ramification module, which we give explicitly. In particular, we obtain the decomposition of H^1(X,C) as a G-module.
We prove a simultaneous generalization of the classical Riemann-Hurwitz and Plucker formulas, addressing the total inflection of a morphism from a (smooth, projective) curve to an arbitrary (smooth, projective) higher-dimensional variety. Our definition of ramification is relative to an algebraic family of divisors on the target variety, and our formula is obtained using the theory of refined top Chern classes. In assigning multiplicities to ramification points, we frequently have to consider excess degeneracy loci, but we are able to show nonetheless that the multiplicities are always nonnega…
We provide a formula describing the G-module structure of the Hurwitz-Hodge bundle for admissible G-covers in terms of the Hodge bundle of the base curve, and more generally, for describing the G-module structure of the push-forward to the base of any sheaf on a family of admissible G-covers. This formula can be interpreted as a representation-ring-valued relative Riemann-Hurwitz formula for families of admissible G-covers.
We find that the first Hurwitz triplet possesses two distinct arithmetic structures. As Shimura curves $X_1$, $X_2$, $X_3$, whose levels are with norm 13. As non-congruence modular curves $Y_1$, $Y_2$, $Y_3$, whose levels are 7. Both of them are defined over ${\Bbb Q}(\cos \frac{2 π}{7})$. However, for the third non-congruence modular curve $Y_3$, there exist an "exotic" duality between the associated non-congruence modular forms and the Hilbert modular forms, both of them are related to ${\Bbb Q}(e^{\frac{2 πi}{13}})$! Our results have relations and applications to modular equations of degree…
We consider a generalized Riemann-Hurwitz formula as it may be applied to rational maps between projective varieties having an indeterminacy set and fold-like singularities. The case of a holomorphic branched covering map is recalled. Then we see how the formula can be applied to iterated maps having branch-like singularities. Separately, we consider a further application involving the Chern classes of determinantal varieties when the latter are realized as the degeneracy loci of certain vector bundle morphisms.
Hurwitz numbers count ramified covers of a Riemann surface with prescribed monodromy. As such, they are purely combinatorial objects. Tautological classes, on the other hand, are distinguished classes in the intersection ring of the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces of a given genus, and are thus ``geometric.'' Localization computations in Gromov-Witten theory provide non-obvious relations between the two. This paper makes one such computation, and shows how it leads to a ``master'' relation (Theorem 0.1) that reduces the ratios of certain interesting tautological classes to the pure combinato…
For any nonconstant f,g in C(x) such that the numerator H(x,y) of f(x)-g(y) is irreducible, we compute the genus of the normalization of the curve H(x,y)=0. We also prove an analogous formula in arbitrary characteristic when f and g have no common wildly ramified branch points, and generalize to (possibly reducible) fiber products of nonconstant morphisms of curves f:A-->D and g:B-->D.
Let $ϕ: C' \to C$ be a finite morphism between smooth, projective, irreducible curves defined over a non-archimedean valued, algebraically closed field $k$. This morphism induces a morphism between the analytifications of the curves. We will construct a compatible pair of deformation retractions of $C'^{an}$ and $C^{an}$ whose images $Υ_{C'^{an}}$ and $Υ_{C^{an}}$ are closed subspaces of $C'^{an}$ and $C^{an}$ which are homeomorphic to finite metric graphs. We refer to such closed subspaces as skeleta. In addition, the subspaces $C'^{an}$ and $C^{an}$ are such that their complements in the two…
In the context of orientable circuits and subcomplexes of these as representing certain singular spaces, we consider characteristic class formulas generalizing those classical results as seen for the Riemann-Hurwitz formula for regulating the topology of branched covering maps and that for monoidal transformations which include the standard blowing-up process. Here the results are presented as cap product pairings, which will be elements of a suitable homology theory, rather than characteristic numbers as would be the case when taking Kronecker products once Poincaré duality is defined. We fur…
In this paper we find an explicit formula for the number of topologically different ramified coverings $C\to\CP^1$ (C is a compact Riemann surface of genus g) with only one complicated branching point in terms of Hodge integrals over the moduli space of genus g curves with marked points.
One can easily show that any meromorphic function on a complex closed Riemann surface can be represented as a composition of a birational map of this surface to CP^2 and a projection of the image curve from an appropriate point p in CP^2 to the pencil of lines through p. We introduce a natural stratification of Hurwitz spaces according to the minimal degree of a plane curve such that a given meromorphic function can be represented in the above way and calculate the dimensions of these strata.
We study the Kähler geometry of the classical Hurwitz space $\mathcal{H}^{n,b}$ of simple branched coverings of the Riemann sphere $\mathbb{P}^1$ by compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. A generalized Weil-Petersson metric on the Hurwitz space was recently introduced. Deformations of simple branched coverings fit into the more general framework of Horikawa's deformation theory of holomorphic maps, which we equip with distinguished representatives in the presence of hermitian metrics. In the article we will investigate the curvature of the generalized Weil-Petersson Kähler metric on the Hurwitz …
Hurwitz spaces parameterizing covers of the Riemann sphere can be equipped with a Frobenius structure. In this review, we recall the construction of such Hurwitz Frobenius manifolds as well as the correspondence between semisimple Frobenius manifolds and the topological recursion formalism. We then apply this correspondence to Hurwitz Frobenius manifolds by explaining that the corresponding primary invariants can be obtained as periods of multidifferentials globally defined on a compact Riemann surface by topological recursion. Finally, we use this construction to reply to the following questi…
We use algebraic methods to compute the simple Hurwitz numbers for arbitrary source and target Riemann surfaces. For an elliptic curve target, we reproduce the results previously obtained by string theorists. Motivated by the Gromov-Witten potentials, we find a general generating function for the simple Hurwitz numbers in terms of the representation theory of the symmetric group S_n. We also find a generating function for Hodge integrals on the moduli space M_{g,2} of Riemann surfaces with two marked points, similar to that found by Faber and Pandharipande for the case of one marked point.
Classically, Euler developed the theory of the Riemann zeta - function using as his starting point the exponential and partial fraction forms of cot(z) . In this paper we wish to develop the theory of $L$-functions of elliptic curves starting from the theory of elliptic functions in an analogous manner.
In this article, we consider regular projective arithmetic schemes in the context of Arakelov geometry, any of which is endowed with an action of the diagonalisable group scheme associated to a finite cyclic group and with an equivariant very ample invertible sheaf. For any equivariant morphism between such arithmetic schemes, which is smooth over the generic fibre, we define a direct image map between corresponding higher equivariant arithmetic K-groups and we discuss its transitivity property. Then we use the localization sequence of higher arithmetic K-groups and the higher arithmetic conce…
A Hurwitz curve is a closed Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$ whose group of conformal automorphisms has order $84(g-1)$. In 1895, Wiman proved that for $g=3$ there is, up to isomorphisms, a unique Hurwitz curve; this being Klein's plane quartic curve. Moreover, he also proved that there is no Hurwitz curve of genus $g=2,4,5,6$. Later, in 1965, Macbeath proved the existence, up to isomorphisms, of a unique Hurwitz curve of genus $g=7$; this known as the Fricke-Macbeath curve. Equations were also provided; that being the fiber product of suitable three elliptic curves. In the same year, Edge …
We prove the irreducibility of the space parametrizing branched covers of a fixed Riemann surface $B$ of degree $d$, with at least 2d branch points, and with monodromy group equal to $S_d$. The result is classical for $g(B)=0$. The result is well-known for $g(B) > 0$, but we could find no reference.
The classical arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem can be applied only to projective morphisms that are smooth over the complex numbers. In this paper we generalize the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem to the case of general projective morphisms between regular arithmetic varieties. To this end we rely on the theory of generalized analytic torsion developed by the authors.
We prove arithmetic Riemann-Roch and Hilbert-Samuel type formulae for pointed stable curves. We give applications to volumes of lattices of integral cusps forms for pointed stable curves of genus 0.
We prove an arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem for pointed stable curves. We derive consequences for the Selberg zeta function of an open modular curve $Y_{1}(p)$ (resp. $Y_{0}(p)$), for a prime number $p\geq 11$ (resp. congruent to 11 modulo 12).
We show that for every g > 1 there is a compact arithmetic Riemann surface of genus g with at least 4(g-1) automorphisms, and that this lower bound is attained by infinitely many genera, the smallest being 24.
We study harmonic morphisms of graphs as a natural discrete analogue of holomorphic maps between Riemann surfaces. We formulate a graph-theoretic analogue of the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula, study the functorial maps on Jacobians and harmonic 1-forms induced by a harmonic morphism, and present a discrete analogue of the canonical map from a Riemann surface to projective space. We also discuss several equivalent formulations of the notion of a hyperelliptic graph, all motivated by the classical theory of Riemann surfaces. As an application of our results, we show that for a 2-edge-connect…
----- We construct three families of automorphic forms following the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem and the arithmetic Lefschetz formula. Two of these families were already constructed by Yoshikawa and our construction illuminates their arithmetic origin.
We study the singular Bott-Chern classes introduced by Bismut, Gillet and Soule. Singular Bott-Chern classes are the main ingredient to define direct images for closed immersions in arithmetic K-theory. In this paper we give an axiomatic definition of a theory of singular Bott-Chern classes, study their properties, and classify all possible theories of this kind. We identify the theory defined by Bismut, Gillet and Soule as the only one that satisfies the additional condition of being homogeneous. We include a proof of the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for closed immersions that…
Spin Hurwitz numbers count ramified covers of a spin surface, weighted by the size of their automorphism group (like ordinary Hurwitz numbers), but signed $\pm 1$ according to the parity of the covering surface. These numbers were first defined by Eskin-Okounkov-Pandharipande in order to study the moduli of holomorphic differentials on a Riemann surface. They have also been related to Gromov-Witten invariants of of complex 2-folds by work of Lee-Parker and Maulik-Pandharipande. In this paper, we construct a (spin) TQFT which computes these numbers, and deduce a formula for any genus in terms o…
A consequence of the results of Bers and Griffiths on the uniformization of complex algebraic varieties is that the universal cover of a family of Riemann surfaces, with base and fibers of finite hyperbolic type, is a contractible 2-dimensional domain that can be realized as the graph of a holomorphic motion of the unit disk. In this paper we determine which holomorphic motions give rise to these uniformizing domains and characterize which among them correspond to arithmetic families (i.e. families defined over number fields). Then we apply these results to characterize the arithmeticity of co…
Harder's reduction theory provides filtrations of euclidean buildings that allow one to deduce cohomological and homological properties of S-arithmetic groups over global function fields. In this survey I will sketch the main points of Harder's reduction theory starting from Weil's geometry of numbers and the Riemann-Roch theorem, describe a filtration that is particularly useful for deriving finiteness properties of S-arithmetic groups, and state the rank conjecture and its partial verifications that do not restrict the cardinality of the underlying field of constants. As a motivation for fur…
