The extremely-low-luminosity, compact Milky Way satellite Ursa Major III / UNIONS 1 (UMaIII/U1; $L_V = 11 \ L_{\odot}$; $a_{1/2} = 3$ pc) was found to have a substantial velocity dispersion at the time of its discovery ($σ_v = 3.7^{+1.4}_{-1.0} \rm \ km \ s^{-1}$), suggesting that it might be an exceptional, highly dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy with very few stars. However, significant questions remained about the system's dark matter content and nature as a dwarf galaxy due to the small member sample ($N=11$), possible spectroscopic binaries, and the lack of any metallicity information. Here, we present new spectroscopic observations covering $N=16$ members that both dynamically and chemically test UMaIII/U1's true nature. From higher-precision Keck/DEIMOS spectra, we find a 95% confidence level velocity dispersion limit of $σ_v< 2.3 \rm \ km \ s^{-1}$, with a $\sim$120:1 likelihood ratio now favoring the expected stellar-only dispersion of $σ_* \approx 0.1 \rm \ km \ s^{-1}$ over the original $3.7 \rm \ km \ s^{-1}$ dispersion. There is now no observational evidence for dark matter in the system. From Keck/LRIS spectra targeting the Calcium II K line, we also measure the first metallicities for 12 member stars, finding a mean metallicity of $\rm [Fe/H] = -2.65 \; \pm \, 0.1$ (stat.) $\pm \,0.3$ (zeropoint) with a metallicity dispersion limit of $σ_{\rm [Fe/H]} < 0.35$ dex (at the 95% credible level). Together, these properties are more consistent with UMaIII/U1 being a star cluster, though the dwarf galaxy scenario is not fully ruled out. Under this interpretation, UMaIII/U1 ranks among the faintest and most metal-poor star clusters yet discovered.
We present a kinematic study of six dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) satellites of the Milky Way (MW), namely Carina, Draco, Fornax, Sculptor, Sextans, and Ursa Minor. We combine proper motions (PMs) from the $Gaia$ Data Release 3 (DR3) and line-of-sight velocities ($v_{\mathrm{los}}$) from the literature to derive their 3D internal kinematics and to study the presence of internal velocity gradients. We find velocity gradients along the line-of-sight for Carina, Draco, Fornax, and Ursa Minor, at $\geq 1σ$ level of significance . The value of such gradients appears to be related to the orbital …
We examine the spatial clustering of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the $\textit{u}$-band of the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS, a component of the Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey, or UNIONS). All major groupings of stars are associated with previously known satellites, and among these is NGC 5466, a distant (16 kpc) globular cluster. NGC 5466 reportedly possesses a long stellar stream, although no individual members of the stream have previously been identified. Using both BHBs and more numerous red giant branch stars cross-matched to $\textit{Gaia}$ Data Releas…
Multi-component, axisymmetric dynamical models of dSphs based on distribution functions: inferences on dark matter and intermediate-mass black holes in Draco and Ursa Minor

We combine the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) DR8 photometry with Gaia photometry to study the 3-D structure of Bootes I, Draco, Ursa Minor, Sextans and Sculptor dwarf galaxies using blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars as distance indicators. We construct a new colour-absolute magnitude of BHB stars that we use to measure the distance gradients within the body of the dwarf galaxies. We detect a statistically significant non-zero gradient only in Sextans and Sculptor. Through modeling of the gradient and 2-D density of the systems by triaxial Plummer models we find that the distance g…
We use data from the 17th data release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE 2) to contrast the chemical composition of the recently discovered Gaia Enceladus/Sausage system (GE/S) to those of ten Milky Way (MW) dwarf satellite galaxies: LMC, SMC, Boötes I, Carina, Draco, Fornax, Sagittarius, Sculptor, Sextans and Ursa Minor. Our main focus is on the distributions of the stellar populations of those systems in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] and [Mg/Mn]-[Al/Fe] planes, which are commonly employed in the literature for chemical diagnosis and where dwarf galaxies can be distin…
We present an analysis of the kinematics of 14 satellites of the Milky Way (MW). We use proper motions (PMs) from the $Gaia$ Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and line-of-sight velocities ($v_{\mathrm{los}}$) available in the literature to derive the systemic 3D motion of these systems. For six of them, namely the Carina, Draco, Fornax, Sculptor, Sextans, and Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph), we study the internal kinematics projecting the stellar PMs into radial, $V_R$ (expansion/contraction), and tangential, $V_T$ (rotation), velocity components with respect to the centre of mass. We fi…
We use the second Gaia data release to investigate the kinematics of 17 ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) and 154 globular clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way, focusing on the differences between static and evolving models of the Galactic potential. An evolving potential modifies a satellite's orbit relative to its static equivalent, though the difference is small compared to existing uncertainties on orbital parameters. We find that the UFD Boötes II is likely on its first passage around the Milky Way. Depending on the assumed mass of the Milky Way, the UFDs Triangulum II, Hydrus I, Coma Berenice…

The distribution of dark matter in dwarf galaxies can have important implications on our understanding of galaxy formation as well as the particle physics properties of dark matter. However, accurately characterizing the dark matter content of dwarf galaxies is challenging due to limited data and complex dynamics that are difficult to accurately model. In this paper, we apply spherical Jeans modeling to simulated stellar kinematic data of spherical, isotropic dwarf galaxies with the goal of identifying the future observational directions that can improve the accuracy of the inferred dark matte…

We present a homogeneous set of accurate atmospheric parameters for a sample of eleven very metal-poor (-3.32 <= [Fe/H] <= -2.61) stars in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) and the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundances of, at least, seven chemical elements based on high-resolution UVES/VLT and HDS/Subaru spectra. For each star, its effective temperature and surface gravity were derived from the spectral energy distribution and the known distance, and the Fe abundance was obtained as the average from lines of Fe I and Fe II. Based on abundances of Mg, Ca, and Ti, we sho…
Using the phat-ELVIS suite of Milky Way-size halo simulations, we show that subhalo orbital pericenters, $r_{\rm peri}$, correlate with their dark matter halo structural properties. Specifically, at fixed maximum circular velocity, $V_{\rm max}$, subhalos with smaller $r_{\rm peri}$ are more concentrated (have smaller $r_{\rm max}$ values) and have lost more mass, with larger peak circular velocities, $V_{\rm peak}$, prior to infall. These trends provide information that can tighten constraints on the inferred $V_{\rm max}$ and $V_{\rm peak}$ values for known Milky Way satellites. We illustrat…
