Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) is a task of central importance in the field of document image understanding. State-of-the-art methods for HTR require the use of extensive annotated sets for training, making them impractical for low-resource domains like historical archives or limited-size modern collections. This paper introduces a novel framework that, unlike the standard HTR model paradigm, can leverage mild prior knowledge of lexical characteristics; this is ideal for scenarios where labeled data are scarce. We propose an iterative bootstrapping approach that aligns visual features extracted from unlabeled images with semantic word representations using Optimal Transport (OT). Starting with a minimal set of labeled examples, the framework iteratively matches word images to text labels, generates pseudo-labels for high-confidence alignments, and retrains the recognizer on the growing dataset. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our iterative visual-semantic alignment scheme significantly improves recognition accuracy on low-resource HTR benchmarks.
A novel approach for recognition of handwritten compound Bangla characters, along with the Basic characters of Bangla alphabet, is presented here. Compared to English like Roman script, one of the major stumbling blocks in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of handwritten Bangla script is the large number of complex shaped character classes of Bangla alphabet. In addition to 50 basic character classes, there are nearly 160 complex shaped compound character classes in Bangla alphabet. Dealing with such a large varieties of handwritten characters with a suitably designed feature set is a challe…

Handwritten character recognition is a hot topic for research nowadays. If we can convert a handwritten piece of paper into a text-searchable document using the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technique, we can easily understand the content and do not need to read the handwritten document. OCR in the English language is very common, but in the Bengali language, it is very hard to find a good quality OCR application. If we can merge machine learning and deep learning with OCR, it could be a huge contribution to this field. Various researchers have proposed a number of strategies for recogni…

Bangla Handwritten Digit recognition is a significant step forward in the development of Bangla OCR. However, intricate shape, structural likeness and distinctive composition style of Bangla digits makes it relatively challenging to distinguish. Thus, in this paper, we benchmarked four rigorous classifiers to recognize Bangla Handwritten Digit: K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient-Boosted Decision Trees (GBDT) based on three handcrafted feature extraction techniques: Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Local Binary Pattern (LBP), and Gabor…
Handwritten numeral recognition is in general a benchmark problem of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. Compared to the problem of printed numeral recognition, the problem of handwritten numeral recognition is compounded due to variations in shapes and sizes of handwritten characters. Considering all these, the problem of handwritten numeral recognition is addressed under the present work in respect to handwritten Arabic numerals. Arabic is spoken throughout the Arab World and the fifth most popular language in the world slightly before Portuguese and Bengali. For the present wor…
HOCR is abbreviated as Handwritten Optical Character Recognition. HOCR is a process of recognition of different handwritten characters from a digital image of documents. Handwritten automatic character recognition has attracted many researchers all over the world to contribute handwritten character recognition domain. Shape identification and feature extraction is very important part of any character recognition system and success of method is highly dependent on selection of features. However feature extraction is the most important step in defining the shape of the character as precisely and…

The recognition of cursive script is regarded as a subtle task in optical character recognition due to its varied representation. Every cursive script has different nature and associated challenges. As Urdu is one of cursive language that is derived from Arabic script, thats why it nearly shares the same challenges and difficulties even more harder. We can categorized Urdu and Arabic language on basis of its script they use. Urdu is mostly written in Nastaliq style whereas, Arabic follows Naskh style of writing. Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts, namely Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telungu.

Offline handwritten mathematical expression recognition is often considered much harder than its online counterpart due to the absence of temporal information. In order to take advantage of the more mature methods for online recognition and save resources, an oversegmentation approach is proposed to recover strokes from textual bitmap images automatically. The proposed algorithm first breaks down the skeleton of a binarized image into junctions and segments, then segments are merged to form strokes, finally stroke order is normalized by using recursive projection and topological sort. Interpretation of different writing styles, unconstrained cursiveness and relationship between different primitive parts is an essential and challenging task for recognition of handwritten characters. As feature representation is inadequate, appropriate interpretation/description of handwritten characters seems to be a challenging task. In this letter, we contribute a multi-language handwritten digit recognition dataset named MNIST-MIX, which is the largest dataset of the same type in terms of both languages and data samples. With the same data format with MNIST, MNIST-MIX can be seamlessly applied in existing studies for handwritten digit recognition. By introducing digits from 10 different languages, MNIST-MIX becomes a more challenging dataset and its imbalanced classification requires a better design of models. We also present the results of applying a LeNet model which is pre-trained on MNIST as the baseline.
In this paper, the problem of handwritten digit recognition has been addressed. However, the underlying language is Persian/Arabic, and the system with which this task is a capsule network (CapsNet) has recently emerged as a more advanced architecture than its ancestor, namely CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). The training of the architecture is performed using the Hoda dataset, which has been provided for Persian/Arabic handwritten digits. The output of the system clearly outperforms the results achieved by its ancestors, as well as other previously presented recognition algorithms.

NumtaDB is by far the largest data-set collection for handwritten digits in Bengali. This is a diverse dataset containing more than 85000 images. The reason being, there are no available pre-processed data for Bengali digit recognition to work with like the English digits for MNIST.
