Handwritten character recognition is one of the most challenging and ongoing areas of research in the field of pattern recognition. HCR research is matured for foreign languages like Chinese and Japanese but the problem is much more complex for Indian languages. The problem becomes even more complicated for South Indian languages due to its large character set and the presence of vowels modifiers and compound characters. This paper provides an overview of important contributions and advances in offline as well as online handwritten character recognition of Malayalam scripts.
Handwriting recognition has been one of the most fascinating and challenging research areas in field of image processing and pattern recognition. It contributes enormously to the improvement of automation process. In this paper, a system for recognition of unconstrained handwritten Malayalam characters is proposed. A database of 10,000 character samples of 44 basic Malayalam characters is used in this work. A discriminate feature set of 64 local and 4 global features are used to train and test SVM classifier and achieved 92.24% accuracy

In this paper, we use statistical texture features for handwritten and printed text classification. We primarily aim for word level classification in south Indian scripts. Words are first extracted from the scanned document. For each extracted word, statistical texture features are computed such as mean, standard deviation, smoothness, moment, uniformity, entropy and local range including local entropy. These feature vectors are then used to classify words via k-NN classifier. We have validated the approach over several different datasets. Scripts like Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi i.e.…

Unconstrained handwritten text recognition is a major step in most document analysis tasks. This is generally processed by deep recurrent neural networks and more specifically with the use of Long Short-Term Memory cells. The main drawbacks of these components are the large number of parameters involved and their sequential execution during training and prediction. One alternative solution to using LSTM cells is to compensate the long time memory loss with an heavy use of convolutional layers whose operations can be executed in parallel and which imply fewer parameters. In this paper we presen…

Unconstrained handwritten text recognition remains an important challenge for deep neural networks. These last years, recurrent networks and more specifically Long Short-Term Memory networks have achieved state-of-the-art performance in this field. Nevertheless, they are made of a large number of trainable parameters and training recurrent neural networks does not support parallelism. This has a direct influence on the training time of such architectures, with also a direct consequence on the time required to explore various architectures. Recently, recurrence-free architectures such as Fully …

Line segmentation from handwritten text images is one of the challenging task due to diversity and unknown variations as undefined spaces, styles, orientations, stroke heights, overlapping, and alignments. Though abundant researches, there is a need of improvement to achieve robustness and higher segmentation rates. In the present work, an adaptive approach is used for the line segmentation from handwritten text images merging the alignment of connected component coordinates and text height. The mathematical justification is provided for measuring the text height respective to the image size. …

Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts, namely Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telungu.
In a multilingual country like India where 12 different official scripts are in use, automatic identification of handwritten script facilitates many important applications such as automatic transcription of multilingual documents, searching for documents on the web/digital archives containing a particular script and for the selection of script specific Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system in a multilingual environment. In this paper, we propose a robust method towards identifying scripts from the handwritten documents at text line-level. The recognition is based upon features extracted u…

Segmentation of handwritten document images into text lines and words is one of the most significant and challenging tasks in the development of a complete Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system. This paper addresses the automatic segmentation of text words directly from unconstrained Bangla handwritten document images. The popular Distance transform (DT) algorithm is applied for locating the outer boundary of the word images. This technique is free from generating the over-segmented words. A simple post-processing procedure is applied to isolate the under-segmented word images, if any. Th…

Inspired by the theory of Leitners learning box from the field of psychology, we propose DropSample, a new method for training deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), and apply it to large-scale online handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR). According to the principle of DropSample, each training sample is associated with a quota function that is dynamically adjusted on the basis of the classification confidence given by the DCNN softmax output. After a learning iteration, samples with low confidence will have a higher probability of being selected as training data in the next it…

Traditional approaches for handwritten Chinese character recognition suffer in classifying similar characters. In this paper, we propose to discriminate similar handwritten Chinese characters by using weakly supervised learning. Our approach learns a discriminative SVM for each similar pair which simultaneously localizes the discriminative region of similar character and makes the classification. For the first time, similar handwritten Chinese character recognition (SHCCR) is formulated as an optimization problem extended from SVM. We also propose a novel feature descriptor, Gradient Context, …

Inspired by recent successes in neural machine translation and image caption generation, we present an attention based encoder decoder model (AED) to recognize Vietnamese Handwritten Text. The model composes of two parts: a DenseNet for extracting invariant features, and a Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM) with an attention model incorporated for generating output text (LSTM decoder), which are connected from the CNN part to the attention model. The input of the CNN part is a handwritten text image and the target of the LSTM decoder is the corresponding text of the input image. Our model i…

Unconstrained handwriting recognition is an essential task in document analysis. It is usually carried out in two steps. First, the document is segmented into text lines. Second, an Optical Character Recognition model is applied on these line images. We propose the Simple Predict & Align Network: an end-to-end recurrence-free Fully Convolutional Network performing OCR at paragraph level without any prior segmentation stage. The framework is as simple as the one used for the recognition of isolated lines and we achieve competitive results on three popular datasets: RIMES, IAM and READ 2016. The…

Unconstrained handwritten text recognition is a challenging computer vision task. It is traditionally handled by a two-step approach, combining line segmentation followed by text line recognition. For the first time, we propose an end-to-end segmentation-free architecture for the task of handwritten document recognition: the Document Attention Network. In addition to text recognition, the model is trained to label text parts using begin and end tags in an XML-like fashion. This model is made up of an FCN encoder for feature extraction and a stack of transformer decoder layers for a recurrent t…

Unconstrained handwritten text recognition remains challenging for computer vision systems. Paragraph text recognition is traditionally achieved by two models: the first one for line segmentation and the second one for text line recognition. We propose a unified end-to-end model using hybrid attention to tackle this task. This model is designed to iteratively process a paragraph image line by line. It can be split into three modules. An encoder generates feature maps from the whole paragraph image. Then, an attention module recurrently generates a vertical weighted mask enabling to focus on th…
Interpretation of different writing styles, unconstrained cursiveness and relationship between different primitive parts is an essential and challenging task for recognition of handwritten characters. As feature representation is inadequate, appropriate interpretation/description of handwritten characters seems to be a challenging task. Although existing research in handwritten characters is extensive, it still remains a challenge to get the effective representation of characters in feature space. In this paper, we make an attempt to circumvent these problems by proposing an approach that expl…

The advent of recurrent neural networks for handwriting recognition marked an important milestone reaching impressive recognition accuracies despite the great variability that we observe across different writing styles. Sequential architectures are a perfect fit to model text lines, not only because of the inherent temporal aspect of text, but also to learn probability distributions over sequences of characters and words. However, using such recurrent paradigms comes at a cost at training stage, since their sequential pipelines prevent parallelization. In this work, we introduce a non-recurren…
A considerable amount of success has been achieved in developing monolingual OCR systems for Indic scripts. But in a country like India, where multi-script scenario is prevalent, identifying scripts beforehand becomes obligatory. In this paper, we present the significance of Gabor wavelets filters in extracting directional energy and entropy distributions for 11 official handwritten scripts namely, Bangla, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurumukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and Roman. The experimentation is conducted at block level based on a quad-tree decomposition approach and eva…

Feature representation in the form of spatio-spectral decomposition is one of the robust techniques adopted in automatic handwritten character recognition systems. In this regard, we propose a new image representation approach for unconstrained handwritten alphanumeric characters using sparse concept coded Tetrolets. Tetrolets, which does not use fixed dyadic square blocks for spectral decomposition like conventional wavelets, preserve the localized variations in handwritings by adopting tetrominoes those capture the shape geometry. The sparse concept coding of low entropy Tetrolet representat…

This paper focuses on the problem of script identification in unconstrained scenarios. Script identification is an important prerequisite to recognition, and an indispensable condition for automatic text understanding systems designed for multi-language environments. Although widely studied for document images and handwritten documents, it remains an almost unexplored territory for scene text images. We detail a novel method for script identification in natural images that combines convolutional features and the Naive-Bayes Nearest Neighbor classifier. The proposed framework efficiently exploi…
As a new way of human-computer interaction, inertial sensor based in-air handwriting can provide a natural and unconstrained interaction to express more complex and richer information in 3D space. However, most of the existing in-air handwriting work is mainly focused on handwritten character recognition, which makes these work suffer from poor readability of inertial signal and lack of labeled samples. To address these two problems, we use unsupervised domain adaptation method to reconstruct the trajectory of inertial signal and generate inertial samples using online handwritten trajectories.…
