Unconstrained handwritten text recognition remains challenging for computer vision systems. Paragraph text recognition is traditionally achieved by two models: the first one for line segmentation and the second one for text line recognition. We propose a unified end-to-end model using hybrid attention to tackle this task. This model is designed to iteratively process a paragraph image line by line. It can be split into three modules. An encoder generates feature maps from the whole paragraph image. Then, an attention module recurrently generates a vertical weighted mask enabling to focus on the current text line features. This way, it performs a kind of implicit line segmentation. For each text line features, a decoder module recognizes the character sequence associated, leading to the recognition of a whole paragraph. We achieve state-of-the-art character error rate at paragraph level on three popular datasets: 1.91% for RIMES, 4.45% for IAM and 3.59% for READ 2016. Our code and trained model weights are available at https://github.com/FactoDeepLearning/VerticalAttentionOCR.
We present an attention-based model for end-to-end handwriting recognition. Our system does not require any segmentation of the input paragraph. The model is inspired by the differentiable attention models presented recently for speech recognition, image captioning or translation. The main difference is the covert and overt attention, implemented as a multi-dimensional LSTM network. Our principal contribution towards handwriting recognition lies in the automatic transcription without a prior segmentation into lines, which was crucial in previous approaches. To the best of our knowledge this is…

Unconstrained handwriting recognition is an essential task in document analysis. It is usually carried out in two steps. First, the document is segmented into text lines. Second, an Optical Character Recognition model is applied on these line images. We propose the Simple Predict & Align Network: an end-to-end recurrence-free Fully Convolutional Network performing OCR at paragraph level without any prior segmentation stage. The framework is as simple as the one used for the recognition of isolated lines and we achieve competitive results on three popular datasets: RIMES, IAM and READ 2016. The…
Offline handwriting recognition systems require cropped text line images for both training and recognition. On the one hand, the annotation of position and transcript at line level is costly to obtain. On the other hand, automatic line segmentation algorithms are prone to errors, compromising the subsequent recognition. In this paper, we propose a modification of the popular and efficient multi-dimensional long short-term memory recurrent neural networks (MDLSTM-RNNs) to enable end-to-end processing of handwritten paragraphs. More particularly, we replace the collapse layer transforming the tw…
Handwritten text recognition has been widely studied in the last decades for its numerous applications. Nowadays, the state-of-the-art approach consists in a three-step process. The document is segmented into text lines, which are then ordered and recognized. However, this three-step approach has many drawbacks. The three steps are treated independently whereas they are closely related. Errors accumulate from one step to the other. The ordering step is based on heuristic rules which prevent its use for documents with a complex layouts or for heterogeneous documents. The need for additional phy…

Handwritten mathematical expression recognition (HMER) is an important research direction in handwriting recognition. The performance of HMER suffers from the two-dimensional structure of mathematical expressions (MEs). To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a high-performance HMER model with scale augmentation and drop attention. Specifically, tackling ME with unstable scale in both horizontal and vertical directions, scale augmentation improves the performance of the model on MEs of various scales. An attention-based encoder-decoder network is used for extracting features and gener…

This paper describes an approach for offline recognition of handwritten mathematical symbols. The process of symbol recognition in this paper includes symbol segmentation and accurate classification for over 300 classes. Many multidimensional mathematical symbols need both horizontal and vertical projection to be segmented. However, some symbols do not permit to be projected and stop segmentation, such as the root symbol. Besides, many mathematical symbols are structurally similar, specifically in handwritten such as 0 and null. There are more than 300 Mathematical symbols. Therefore, designin…
This paper presents a new probabilistic graphical model used to model and recognize words representing the names of Tunisian cities. In fact, this work is based on a dynamic hierarchical Bayesian network. The aim is to find the best model of Arabic handwriting to reduce the complexity of the recognition process by permitting the partial recognition. Actually, we propose a segmentation of the word based on smoothing the vertical histogram projection using different width values to reduce the error of segmentation. Then, we extract the characteristics of each cell using the Zernike and HU moment…
Identity verification based on authenticity assessment of a handwritten signature is an important issue in biometrics. There are many effective methods for signature verification taking into account dynamics of a signing process. Methods based on partitioning take a very important place among them. In this paper we propose a new approach to signature partitioning. Its most important feature is the possibility of selecting and processing of hybrid partitions in order to increase a precision of the test signature analysis. Partitions are formed by a combination of vertical and horizontal section…
We present a Neural Network based Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) model architecture that can be trained to recognize full pages of handwritten or printed text without image segmentation. Being based on Image to Sequence architecture, it can extract text present in an image and then sequence it correctly without imposing any constraints regarding orientation, layout and size of text and non-text. Further, it can also be trained to generate auxiliary markup related to formatting, layout and content. We use character level vocabulary, thereby enabling language and terminology of any subject. …

Page segmentation is considered to be the crucial stage for the automatic analysis of documents with complex layouts. This has traditionally been carried out in uncompressed documents, although most of the documents in real life exist in a compressed form warranted by the requirement to make storage and transfer efficient. However, carrying out page segmentation directly in compressed documents without going through the stage of decompression is a challenging goal. This research paper proposes demonstrating the possibility of carrying out a page segmentation operation directly in the run-lengt…

Over the last decades, most approaches proposed for handwritten digit string recognition (HDSR) have resorted to digit segmentation, which is dominated by heuristics, thereby imposing substantial constraints on the final performance. Few of them have been based on segmentation-free strategies where each pixel column has a potential cut location. Recently, segmentation-free strategies has added another perspective to the problem, leading to promising results. However, these strategies still show some limitations when dealing with a large number of touching digits. To bridge the resulting gap, i…

We present a new approach for online handwritten signature classification and verification based on descriptors stemming from Information Theory. The proposal uses the Shannon Entropy, the Statistical Complexity, and the Fisher Information evaluated over the Bandt and Pompe symbolization of the horizontal and vertical coordinates of signatures. These six features are easy and fast to compute, and they are the input to an One-Class Support Vector Machine classifier. The results produced surpass state-of-the-art techniques that employ higher-dimensional feature spaces which often require special…
Recovering the original printed texts from a document with added handwritten annotations in the marginal area is one of the challenging problems, especially when the original document is not available. Therefore, this paper aims at salvaging automatically the original document from the annotated document by detecting and removing any handwritten annotations that appear in the marginal area of the document without any loss of information. Here a two stage algorithm is proposed, where in the first stage due to approximate marginal boundary detection with horizontal and vertical projection profil…
Most existing online writer-identification systems require that the text content is supplied in advance and rely on separately designed features and classifiers. The identifications are based on lines of text, entire paragraphs, or entire documents; however, these materials are not always available. In this paper, we introduce a path-signature feature to an end-to-end text-independent writer-identification system with a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN). Because deep models require a considerable amount of data to achieve good performance, we propose a data-augmentation method named Dro…

Online Arabic cursive character recognition is still a big challenge due to the existing complexities including Arabic cursive script styles, writing speed, writer mood and so forth. Due to these unavoidable constraints, the accuracy of online Arabic character's recognition is still low and retain space for improvement. In this research, an enhanced method of detecting the desired critical points from vertical and horizontal direction-length of handwriting stroke features of online Arabic script recognition is proposed. Each extracted stroke feature divides every isolated character into some m…
