Handwritten mathematical expression recognition (HMER) is an important research direction in handwriting recognition. The performance of HMER suffers from the two-dimensional structure of mathematical expressions (MEs). To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a high-performance HMER model with scale augmentation and drop attention. Specifically, tackling ME with unstable scale in both horizontal and vertical directions, scale augmentation improves the performance of the model on MEs of various scales. An attention-based encoder-decoder network is used for extracting features and generating predictions. In addition, drop attention is proposed to further improve performance when the attention distribution of the decoder is not precise. Compared with previous methods, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on two public datasets of CROHME 2014 and CROHME 2016.
We introduce two data augmentation techniques, which, used with a Resnet-BiLSTM-CTC network, significantly reduce Word Error Rate (WER) and Character Error Rate (CER) beyond best-reported results on handwriting text recognition (HTR) tasks. We apply a novel augmentation that simulates strikethrough text (HandWritten Blots) and a handwritten text generation method based on printed text (StackMix), which proved to be very effective in HTR tasks. StackMix uses weakly-supervised framework to get character boundaries. Because these data augmentation techniques are independent of the network used, t…

One of the factors limiting the performance of handwritten text recognition (HTR) for stenography is the small amount of annotated training data. To alleviate the problem of data scarcity, modern HTR methods often employ data augmentation. However, due to specifics of the stenographic script, such settings may not be directly applicable for stenography recognition. In this work, we study 22 classical augmentation techniques, most of which are commonly used for HTR of other scripts, such as Latin handwriting. Through extensive experiments, we identify a group of augmentations, including for exa…

This paper presents results of a study of the performance of several base classifiers for recognition of handwritten characters of the modern Latin alphabet. Base classification performance is further enhanced by utilizing Viterbi error correction by determining the Viterbi sequence. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) models exploit relationships between letters within a word to determine the most likely sequence of characters. Four base classifiers are studied along with eight feature sets extracted from the handwritten dataset. The best classification performance after correction was 89.8%, and the…

Currently, owing to the ubiquity of mobile devices, online handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR) has become one of the suitable choice for feeding input to cell phones and tablet devices. Over the past few years, larger and deeper convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have extensively been employed for improving character recognition performance. However, its substantial storage requirement is a significant obstacle in deploying such networks into portable electronic devices. To circumvent this problem, we propose a novel technique called DropWeight for pruning redundant connections …

Inspired by the theory of Leitners learning box from the field of psychology, we propose DropSample, a new method for training deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), and apply it to large-scale online handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR). According to the principle of DropSample, each training sample is associated with a quota function that is dynamically adjusted on the basis of the classification confidence given by the DCNN softmax output. After a learning iteration, samples with low confidence will have a higher probability of being selected as training data in the next it…

Handwritten text and scene text suffer from various shapes and distorted patterns. Thus training a robust recognition model requires a large amount of data to cover diversity as much as possible. In contrast to data collection and annotation, data augmentation is a low cost way. In this paper, we propose a new method for text image augmentation. Different from traditional augmentation methods such as rotation, scaling and perspective transformation, our proposed augmentation method is designed to learn proper and efficient data augmentation which is more effective and specific for training a r…

In this paper, we face the problem of offline handwritten text recognition (HTR) in historical documents when few labeled samples are available and some of them contain errors in the train set. Three main contributions are developed. First we analyze how to perform transfer learning (TL) from a massive database to a smaller historical database, analyzing which layers of the model need a fine-tuning process. Second, we analyze methods to efficiently combine TL and data augmentation (DA). Finally, an algorithm to mitigate the effects of incorrect labelings in the training set is proposed. The me…

Usually, in a real-world scenario, few signature samples are available to train an automatic signature verification system (ASVS). However, such systems do indeed need a lot of signatures to achieve an acceptable performance. Neuromotor signature duplication methods and feature space augmentation methods may be used to meet the need for an increase in the number of samples. Such techniques manually or empirically define a set of parameters to introduce a degree of writer variability. Therefore, in the present study, a method to automatically model the most common writer variability traits is p…

Encoder-decoder models have made great progress on handwritten mathematical expression recognition recently. However, it is still a challenge for existing methods to assign attention to image features accurately. Moreover, those encoder-decoder models usually adopt RNN-based models in their decoder part, which makes them inefficient in processing long $\LaTeX{}$ sequences. In this paper, a transformer-based decoder is employed to replace RNN-based ones, which makes the whole model architecture very concise. Furthermore, a novel training strategy is introduced to fully exploit the potential of …

To alleviate such problems, synthetic data generation and data augmentation are typically used to train HTR systems. However, training with such data produces encouraging but still inaccurate transcriptions in real words. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised writer adaptation approach that is able to automatically adjust a generic handwritten word recognizer, fully trained with synthetic fonts, towa…

To settle this problem, we utilize the attention based encoder-decoder model that recognizes mathematical expression images from two-dimensional layouts to one-dimensional LaTeX strings. We improve the encoder by employing densely connected convolutional networks as they can strengthen feature extraction and facilitate gradient propagation especially on a small training set. We also present a nove…

Increased accuracy in predictive models for handwritten character recognition will open up new frontiers for optical character recognition. Major drawbacks of predictive machine learning models are headed by the elongated training time taken by some models, and the requirement that training and test data be in the same feature space and consist of the same distribution. This model is presented for the recognition of handwritten numerals in Indic languages. The model utilizes …
