High-precision manipulation has always been a developmental goal for aerial manipulators. This paper investigates the kinematic coordinate control issue in aerial manipulators. We propose a predictive kinematic coordinate control method, which includes a learning-based modified kinematic model and a model predictive control (MPC) scheme based on weight allocation. Compared to existing methods, our proposed approach offers several attractive features. First, the kinematic model incorporates closed-loop dynamics characteristics and online residual learning. Compared to methods that do not consider closed-loop dynamics and residuals, our proposed method has improved accuracy by 59.6$\%$. Second, a MPC scheme that considers weight allocation has been proposed, which can coordinate the motion strategies of quadcopters and manipulators. Compared to methods that do not consider weight allocation, the proposed method can meet the requirements of more tasks. The proposed approach is verified through complex trajectory tracking and moving target tracking experiments. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Planning a time-optimal trajectory for aerial robots is critical in many drone applications, such as rescue missions and package delivery, which have been widely researched in recent years. However, it still involves several challenges, particularly when it comes to incorporating special task requirements into the planning as well as the aerial robot's dynamics. In this work, we study a case where an aerial manipulator shall hand over a parcel from a moving mobile robot in a time-optimal manner. Rather than setting up the approach trajectory manually, which makes it difficult to determine the …

This paper presents a method for aerial manipulator end-effector trajectory tracking by encompassing dynamics of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and null space of the manipulator attached to it in the motion planning procedure. The proposed method runs in phases. Trajectory planning starts by not accounting for roll and pitch angles of the underactuated UAV system. Next, we propose simulating the dynamics on such a trajectory and obtaining UAV attitude through the model. The full aerial manipulator state obtained in such a manner is further utilized to account for discrepancies in planned an…

This paper proposes a novel controller framework that provides trajectory tracking for an Aerial Manipulator (AM) while ensuring the safe operation of the system under unknown bounded disturbances. The AM considered here is a 2-DOF (degrees-of-freedom) manipulator rigidly attached to a UAV. Our proposed controller structure follows the conventional inner loop PID control for attitude dynamics and an outer loop controller for tracking a reference trajectory. The outer loop control is based on the Model Predictive Control (MPC) with constraints derived using the Barrier Lyapunov Function (BLF) f…
Presented in this paper is the kinematic analysis of a symmetrical three-degree-of-freedom planar parallel manipulator. In opposite to serial manipulators, parallel manipulators can admit not only multiple inverse kinematic solutions, but also multiple direct kinematic solutions. This property produces more complicated kinematic models but allows more flexibility in trajectory planning. To take into account this property, the notion of aspects, i.e. the maximal singularity-free domains, was introduced, based on the notion of working modes, which makes it possible to separate the inverse kinema…

Positioning 3R manipulators may have two or four inverse kinematic solutions (IKS). This paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition for 3R positioning manipulators with orthogonal joint axes to have four distinct IKS. We show that the transition between manipulators with 2 and 4 IKS is defined by the set of manipulators with a quadruple root of their inverse kinematics. The resulting condition is explicit and states that the last link length of the manipulator must be greater than a quantity that depends on three of its remaining DH-parameters. This result is of interest for the design…

This paper presents the inverse kinematic analysis and parameters identification of a novel aerial manipulation system. This system consists of 2-link manipulator attached to the bottom of a quadrotor. This new system presents a solution for the limitations found in the current quadrotor manipulation system. By deriving the inverse kinematics, one can design the controller such that the desired end effector position and orientation can be tracked. To study the feasibility of the proposed system, a quadrotor with high enough payload to add the 2-link manipulator is designed and constructed. Exp…

We present a novel general model that unifies the kinematics of constant curvature and constant twist continuum manipulators. Combining this kinematics with energy-based physics, we derive a linear mapping from actuator configuration to manipulator deformation that is analogous to traditional robot forward kinematics. Our model generalizes across manipulators with different sizes, types of bending, and types of actuators, without the need for parameter re-fitting. The combination of generality and linearity makes the model useful for control and planning algorithms. Finally, our model is shown…
The aim of this paper is the kinematic study of a 3-RPR planar parallel manipulator where the three fixed revolute joints are actuated. The direct and inverse kinematic problem as well as the singular configuration is characterized. The aim of this paper is to characterize the notion of aspect in the workspace and in the joint space for parallel manipulators. In opposite to the serial manipulators, the parallel manipulators can admit not only multiple inverse kinematic solutions, but also multiple direct kinematic solutions. The notion of aspect introduced for serial manipulators in [Borrel 86], and redefined for parallel manipulators with only one inverse kinematic solution in [Wenger 1997], is redefined for general fully parallel manipulators. Two Jacobian matrices appear in the kinematic relations between the joint-rat…
A class of analytic planar 3-RPR manipulators is analyzed in this paper. These manipulators have congruent base and moving platforms and the moving platform is rotated of 180 deg about an axis in the plane. The forward kinematics is reduced to the solution of a 3rd-degree polynomial and a quadratic equation in sequence. The singularities are calculated and plotted in the joint space. The second-order singularities (cups points), which play an important role in non-singular change of assembly-mode motions, are also analyzed.
This work addresses the problem of kinematic trajectory planning for mobile manipulators with non-holonomic constraints, and holonomic operational-space tracking constraints. We obtain whole-body trajectories and time-varying kinematic feedback controllers by solving a Constrained Sequential Linear Quadratic Optimal Control problem. The employed algorithm features high efficiency through a continuous-time formulation that benefits from adaptive step-size integrators and through linear complexity in the number of integration steps. In a first application example, we solve kinematic trajectory p…

This paper investigates two situations in which the forward kinematics of planar 3-RPR parallel manipulators degenerates. These situations have not been addressed before. The first degeneracy arises when the three input joint variables r1, r2 and r3 satisfy a certain relationship. This degeneracy yields a double root of the characteristic polynomial in t, which could be erroneously interpreted as two coalesce assembly modes. But, unlike what arises in non-degenerate cases, this double root yields two sets of solutions for the position coordinates (x, y) of the platform. In the second situation…

The elementary transform sequence (ETS) provides a universal method of describing the kinematics of any serial-link manipulator. The ETS notation is intuitive and easy to understand, while avoiding the complexity and limitations of Denvit-Hartenberg frame assignment. In this paper, we describe a systematic method for computing the manipulator Jacobian and Hessian (differential kinematics) using the ETS notation. Differential kinematics have many applications including numerical inverse kinematics, resolved-rate motion control and manipulability motion control. Furthermore, we provide an open-s…

This work investigates new kinematic features of parallel manipulators. It is well known that parallel manipulators admit generally several direct kinematic solutions for a given set of input joint values. The aim of this paper is to characterize the uniqueness domains in the workspace of parallel manipulators, as well as their image in the joint space. The study focuses on the most usual case of parallel manipulators with only one inverse kinematic solution. The notion of aspect introduced for serial manipulators in [Borrel 86] is redefined for such parallel manipulators. Then, it is shown th…

The paper focuses on the redundancy resolution in kinematic control of a new type of serial manipulator composed of multiple tensegrity segments, which are moving in a multi-obstacle environment. The general problem is decomposed into two sub-problems, which deal with collision-free path planning for the robot end-effector and collision-free motion planning for the robot body. The first of them is solved via discrete dynamic programming, the second one is worked out using quadratic programming with mixed linear equality/nonequality constraints. Efficiency of the proposed technique is confirmed…
This paper analyses the workspace of the three-revolute orthogonal manipulators that have at least one of their DH parameters equal to zero. These manipulators are classified into different groups with similar kinematic properties. The classification criteria are based on the topology of the workspace. Each group is evaluated according to interesting kinematic properties such as the size of the workspace subregion reachable with four inverse kinematic solutions, the existence and the size of voids, and the size of the regions of feasible paths in the workspace.

The subject of this paper is a special class of parallel manipulators. First, we analyze a family of three-degree-of-freedom manipulators. Two Jacobian matrices appear in the kinematic relations between the joint-rate and the Cartesian-velocity vectors, which are called the "inverse kinematics" and the "direct kinematics" matrices. The singular configurations of these matrices are studied. The isotropic configurations are then studied based on the characteristic length of this manipulator. The isoconditioning loci of all Jacobian matrices are computed to define a global performance index to co…

A hyper-redundant robotic arm is a manipulator with many degrees of freedom, capable of executing tasks in cluttered environments where robotic arms with fewer degrees of freedom are unable to operate. This paper introduces a new method for modeling those manipulators in a completely dynamic way. The proposed method enables online changes of the kinematic structure with the use of a special function; termed "meta-controlling function". This function can be used to develop policies to reduce drastically the computational cost for a single task, and to robustly control the robotic arm, even in t…

This paper proposes a classification of three-revolute orthogonal manipulators that have at least one of their DH parameters equal to zero. This classification is based on the topology of their workspace. The workspace is characterized in a half-cross section by the singular curves. The workspace topology is defined by the number of cusps and nodes that appear on these singular curves. The manipulators are classified into different types with similar kinematic properties. Each type is evaluated according to interesting kinematic properties such as, whether the workspace is fully reachable with…
A polynomial solution to the inverse kinematic problem of the Kinova Gen3 Lite robot is proposed in this paper. This serial robot is based on a 6R kinematic chain and is not wrist-partitioned. We first start from the forward kinematics equation providing the position and orientation of the end-effector, finally, the univariate polynomial equation is given as a function of the first joint variable $θ_{1}$. The remaining joint variables are computed by back substitution. Thus, an unique set of joint position is obtain for each root of the univariate equation. Numerical examples, simulated in ROS…

The subject of this paper is a special class of closed-chain manipulators. First, we analyze a family of two-degree-of-freedom (dof) five-bar planar linkages. Two Jacobian matrices appear in the kinematic relations between the joint-rate and the Cartesian-velocity vectors, which are called the ``inverse kinematics" and the "direct kinematics" matrices. It is shown that the loci of points of the workspace where the condition number of the direct-kinematics matrix remains constant, i.e., the isoconditioning loci, are the coupler points of the four-bar linkage obtained upon locking the middle joi…

We present an efficient method based on particle swarm optimization that can generate collision-free configurations for each redundant manipulator. Furthermore, our approach can be used to compute safe and oscillation-free trajectories in a few milli-seconds. We highlight the real-time p…

Solving the analytical inverse kinematics (IK) of redundant manipulators in real time is a difficult problem in robotics since its solution for a given target pose is not unique. Moreover, choosing the optimal IK solution with respect to application-specific demands helps to improve the robustness and to increase the success rate when driving the manipulator from its current configuration towards a desired pose. This is necessary, especially in high-dynamic tasks like catching objects in mid-flights. To compute a suitable target configuration in the joint space for a given target pose in the t…

We develop an algorithm that solves the inverse kinematics of general serial 2RP3R, 2R2P2R, 3RP2R and 6R manipulators based on the HuPf algorithm. We identify the workspaces of the 3-subchains of the manipulator with a quasi-projective variety in $\mathbb{P}^7$ via dual quaternions. This allows us to compute linear forms that describe linear spaces containing the workspaces of these 3-subchains. We present numerical examples that illustrate the algorithm and show the real solutions.

Forward and backward reaching inverse kinematics (FABRIK) is a heuristic inverse kinematics solver that is gradually applied to manipulators with the advantages of fast convergence and generating more realistic configurations. However, under the high error constraint, FABRIK exhibits unstable convergence behavior, which is unsatisfactory for the real-time motion planning of manipulators. In this paper, a novel inverse kinematics algorithm that combines FABRIK and the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm is presented, in which the joint angles deduced by FABRIK will be taken as the …

In this paper, a new numerical method to solve the forward kinematics (FK) of a parallel manipulator with three-limb spherical-prismatic-revolute (3SPR) structure is presented. Unlike the existing numerical approaches that rely on computation of the manipulator's Jacobian matrix and its inverse at each iteration, the proposed algorithm requires much less computations to estimate the FK parameters. A cost function is introduced that measures the difference of the estimates from the actual FK values. At each iteration, the problem is decomposed into two steps. First, the estimates of the platfor…
