A scheme for implementing quantum batteries in a realizable and controllable platform based on a trapped ion chain driven by a mechanical oscillator is proposed. The effects of the hopping interaction between the two-level ions and the coupling interaction between the ions and the external mechanical oscillator on the charging process of the battery are investigated. The importance of the counter-rotating wave terms in the system's Hamiltonian, which are often ignored, is analyzed, and it is found that the charging energy and the ergotropy of the battery are dramatically affected by the counter-rotating wave terms. The quantum phase transition of the two-level system is restrained by the counter-rotating wave terms due to the destruction of the quantum coherence. Lastly, the power-law dependence of the charging process on the distance between the ions is discussed. Our theoretical analysis provides a solid foundation for the development of a practical quantum battery.
We investigate the charging process of quantum battery (QB) systems in an extended Dicke model with both atomic interactions and an external driving field. We focus on the effects of the atomic interaction and the external driving field on the charging performance of QB and find that the maximum stored energy of QB has a critical phenomenon. We analyze the critical behavior and obtain the analytical expression of the critical atomic interaction. The dependence of the maximum stored energy, the energy quantum fluctuations and the maximum charging power on the number $N$ of the two-level systems…
The Dicke-Ising model describes cavity quantum electrodynamics setups in which dipoles couple not only with the photonic cavity field but also to each other through dipole-dipole interaction. In this work we diagonalise such a model in terms of bosonic polaritonic operators for arbitrarily large values of the light-matter coupling and for values of the dipole-dipole interaction until the onset of the ferromagnetic Ising phase transition. In order to accomplish this task we exploit higher order terms of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, developing a general method which allows to solve the…

We consider a collection of two level systems, such as qubits, embedded into a microwave cavity as a promising candidate for the realization of high power quantum batteries. In this perspective, the possibility to design devices where the conventional single-photon coupling is suppressed and the dominant interaction is mediated by two-photon processes is investigated, opening the way to an even further enhancement of the charging performance. By solving a Dicke model with both single- and two-photon coupling we determine the range of parameters where the latter unconventional interaction domin…
We investigate the thermodynamics of a combined Dicke- and Ising-model which exhibits a rich phenomenology arising from the second order and quantum phase transitions from the respective models. The partition function is calculated using mean field theory, and the free energy is analyzed in detail to determine the complete phase diagram for the system. The analysis reveals both first- and second-order Dicke phase transitions into a super-radiant state, and the cavity mean-field in this regime acts as an effective magnetic field, which restricts the Ising chain dynamics to parameter ranges away…
We consider a central-spin battery where $N_b$ central spins serve as battery cells and $N_c$ bath spins serve as charging units. It is shown that the energy stored in the battery that can be extractable is quantified by the ergotropy, and that battery-charger entanglement is quantified via the Von Neumann entropy. By using an exact approach to a one-cell and two-cell battery, our analytical results suggest that, during the charging process, the extractable work slowly increases before the battery-charger entanglement reaches its maximum and then it will rapidly increase when the entanglement …
Quantum information theorems state that it is possible to exploit collective quantum resources to greatly enhance the charging power of quantum batteries (QBs) made of many identical elementary units. We here present and solve a model of a QB that can be engineered in solid-state architectures. It consists of $N$ two-level systems coupled to a single photonic mode in a cavity. We contrast this collective model ("Dicke QB"), whereby entanglement is genuinely created by the common photonic mode, to the one in which each two-level system is coupled to its own separate cavity mode ("Rabi QB"). By …

We implement two Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm (QAOA) variants for a battery revenue optimisation problem, equivalent to the weakly NP-hard Knapsack Problem. Both approaches investigate how to tackle constrained problems with QAOA. A first 'constrained' approach introduces a quadratic penalty to enforce the constraint to be respected strictly and reformulates the problem into an Ising Problem. However, simulations on IBM's simulator highlight non-convergent results for intermediate depth ($ p\leq 50$). A second 'relaxed' approach applies the QAOA with a non-Ising target function t…

We explore the charging of a quantum battery based on spin systems through periodic modulation of a transverse-field like Ising Hamiltonian. In the integrable limit, we find that resonance tunneling can lead to a higher transfer of energy to the battery and better stability of the stored energy at specific drive frequencies. When the integrability is broken in the presence of an additional longitudinal field, we find that the effective Floquet Hamiltonian contains terms which may lead to a global charging of the battery. However, we do not find any quantum advantage in the charging power, thus…

The Dicke model describes the coupling between a quantized cavity field and a large ensemble of two-level atoms. When the number of atoms tends to infinity, this model can undergo a transition to a superradiant phase, belonging to the mean-field Ising universality class. The superradiant transition was first predicted for atoms in thermal equilibrium and was recently realized with a quantum simulator made of atoms in an optical cavity, subject to both dissipation and driving. In this Progress Report, we offer an introduction to some theoretical concepts relevant to the Dicke model, reviewing t…
Starting from the observation that the reduced state of a system strongly coupled to a bath is, in general, an athermal state, we introduce and study a cyclic battery-charger quantum device that is in thermal equilibrium, or in a ground state, during the charge storing stage. The cycle has four stages: the equilibrium storage stage is interrupted by disconnecting the battery from the charger, then work is extracted from the battery, and then the battery is reconnected with the charger; finally, the system is brought back to equilibrium. At no point during the cycle are the battery-charger corr…
Quantum batteries, composed of quantum cells, are expected to outperform their classical analogs. The origin of such advantages lies in the role of quantum correlations, which may arise during the charging and discharging processes performed on the battery. In this theoretical work, we introduce a systematic characterization of the relevant quantities of quantum batteries, i.e., the capacity and the power, in relation to such correlations. For these quantities, we derive upper bounds for batteries that are a collection of noninteracting quantum cells with fixed Hamiltonians. The capacity, that…
Driven quantum systems coupled to an environment typically exhibit effectively thermal behavior with relaxational dynamics near criticality. However, a different qualitative behavior might be expected in the weakly dissipative limit due to the competition between coherent dynamics and weak dissipation. In this work, we investigate a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model in the presence of individual atomic dissipation, a model that emerges from the paradigmatic open Dicke model in the large-detuning limit. We show that the system undergoes a dynamical crossover from relaxational dynami…
