Effective noise models are essential for analyzing and understanding the dynamics of quantum systems, particularly in applications like quantum error mitigation and correction. However, even when noise processes are well-characterized in isolation, the effective noise channels impacting target quantum operations can differ significantly, as different gates experience noise in distinct ways. Here, we present a noise model construction method that builds an effective model from a Lindbladian description of the physical noise processes acting simultaneously to the desired gate operation. It employs the Magnus expansion and Dyson series, and can be utilized for both low-order symbolic and high-order numerical approximations of the noise channel of a multi-qubit quantum gate. We envision multiple use cases of our noise construction method such as (i) computing the corresponding noise channel from a learned Lindbladian, and (ii) generating the noise channel starting with physically motivated Lindbladians for a given hardware architecture. In doing so, we close the gap between physical Lindbladians and operational level noise model parameters. We demonstrate a strong agreement between our symbolic noise construction and full numerical Lindblad simulations for various two-qubit gates, in isolation and in three- and four-qubit scenarios, for a variety of physically motivated noise sources. Our symbolic construction provides a useful breakdown of how noise model parameters depend on the underlying physical noise parameters, which gives qualitative insight into the structure of errors. For instance, our theory provides insight into the interplay of Lindblad noise with the intended gate operations, and can predict how local Lindblad noise can effectively spread into multi-qubit error.
We derive the explicit commutation relations for the generators of quantum dynamical semigroup - Markovian superoperator evolution, allowing the extension of Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff-type relations to general Lindblad-type evolutions. This provides a novel tool for exploring the interaction of time-dependent coherent and Markovian evolutions - a surprisingly rich set of behaviors which include deformation by coherent driving of Markovian terms, generation of new Lindblad terms from time-dependent noise and even a coherent driving term generated by the interaction of time-separated Markovian no…
In this work, we studied the relaxation dynamics of coherences of different order present in a system of two coupled nuclear spins. We used a previously designed model for intrinsic noise present in such systems which considers the Lindblad master equation for Markovian relaxation. We experimentally created zero-, single- and double- quantum coherences in several two-spin systems and performed a complete state tomography and computed state fidelity. We experimentally measured the decay of zero- and double- quantum coherences in these systems. The experimental data fitted well to a model that c…
An important issue in developing quantum technology is that quantum states are so sensitive to noise. We propose a protocol that introduces reverse dynamics, in order to precisely control quantum systems against noise described by the Lindblad master equation. The reverse dynamics can be obtained by constructing the Petz recovery map in continuous time. By providing the exact form of the Hamiltonian and jump operators for the reverse dynamics, we explore the potential of utilizing the near-optimal recovery of the Petz map in controlling noisy quantum dynamics. While time-dependent dissipation …

We introduce the concepts of Poisson brackets for classical noise, and of canonically conjugate Wiener processes (symplectic noise). Phase space diffusions driven by these processes are considered and the general form of a stochastic process preserving the full (system and noise) Poisson structure is obtained. We show that, once the classical stochastic model is required to preserve the joint system and noise Poisson bracket, it has much in common with quantum markovian models.
As progress is made towards the first generation of error-corrected quantum computers, robust characterization and validation protocols are required to assess the noise environments of physical quantum processors. While standard coherence metrics and characterization protocols such as T1 and T2, process tomography, and randomized benchmarking are now ubiquitous, these techniques provide only partial information about the dynamic multi-qubit loss channels responsible for processor errors, which can be described more fully by a Lindblad operator in the master equation formalism. Here, we introdu…

We consider the problem of the measurement of a system occurring during a finite time interval, while environmentally-induced noise decreases the system-state coherence. We assume a Markovian measuring device and, therefore, use a Lindbladian description for the measurement dynamics. For studying the case of noise produced by a non-Markovian environment, whose definition does not include the measuring apparatus, we use the Redfield approach to the interaction between system and environment. In the present hybrid theory, to trace out the environmental degrees of freedom, we introduce an analyti…
We show how, in the presence of quantum noises generated by non-commuting Lindblad operators, a maximally entangled Bell state may suffer entanglement sudden death (ESD). Similarly, ESD may occur when a Bell state is under the action of a quantum operation generated by a Hamiltonian in the presence of a quantum noise, provided that the Hamiltonian does not commute with the corresponding Lindblad operator. Practically this means noisy quantum operations could cause ESD during the encoding process in quantum communication protocols like special dense coding ($\cal S$). Next, we show how in the p…

Recently, the dynamics simulation of light-harvesting complexes as an open quantum system, in the weak and strong coupling regimes, has received much attention. In this paper, we investigate a digital quantum simulation approach of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) photosynthetic pigment-protein complex surrounded with a Markovian bath, i.e., memoryless, based on a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer. For this purpose, we apply the decoupling(recoupling) method, which is turn off(on) the couplings and also Solovay-Kitaev techniques to decompose Hamiltonian and Lindbladians into effi…
We study the dynamics of four-qubit W state under various noisy environments by solving analytically the master equation in the Lindblad form in which the Lindblad operators correspond to the Pauli matrices and describe the decoherence of states. Also, we investigate the dynamics of the entanglement using the lower bound to the concurrence. It is found that while the entanglement decreases monotonically for Pauli-Z noise, it decays suddenly for other three noises. Moreover, by studying the time evolution of entanglement of various maximally entangled four-qubit states, we indicate that the fou…
Orbital angular momentum of photons is an intriguing system for the storage and transmission of quantum information, but it is rapidly degraded by atmospheric turbulence. Understanding the noise processes that affect photons is essential if we desire to protect them. In this paper we use the infinitesimal propagation equation of Roux to derive a discrete Lindblad equation, and numerically study the form of the most relevant Lindblad operators. We find that the dominant Lindblad operators are those that shift the angular momentum by one unit. We explore possible schemes to protect quantum infor…
We analyse the problem of estimating a scalar parameter $g$ that controls the Hamiltonian of a quantum system subject to Markovian noise. Specifically, we place bounds on the growth rate of the quantum Fisher information with respect to $g$, in terms of the Lindblad operators and the $g$-derivative of the Hamiltonian $H$. Our new bounds are not only more generally applicable than those in the literature -- for example, they apply to systems with time-dependent Hamiltonians and/or Lindblad operators, and to infinite-dimensional systems such as oscillators -- but are also tighter in the settings…
We investigate quantum teleportation through noisy quantum channels by solving analytically and numerically a master equation in the Lindblad form. We calculate the fidelity as a function of decoherence rates and angles of a state to be teleported. It is found that the average fidelity and the range of states to be accurately teleported depend on types of noise acting on quantum channels. If the quantum channels is subject to isotropic noise, the average fidelity decays to 1/2, which is smaller than the best possible value 2/3 obtained only by the classical communication. On the other hand, if…

Markovian master equations, often called Liouvillians or Lindbladians, are used to describe decay and decoherence of a quantum system induced by that system's environment. While a natural environment is detrimental to fragile quantum properties, an engineered environment can drive the system toward exotic phases of matter or toward subspaces protected from noise. These cases often require the Lindbladian to have more than one steady state, and such Lindbladians are dissipative analogues of Hamiltonians with multiple ground states. This thesis studies Lindbladian extensions of topics commonplac…
