We consider the problem of the measurement of a system occurring during a finite time interval, while environmentally-induced noise decreases the system-state coherence. We assume a Markovian measuring device and, therefore, use a Lindbladian description for the measurement dynamics. For studying the case of noise produced by a non-Markovian environment, whose definition does not include the measuring apparatus, we use the Redfield approach to the interaction between system and environment. In the present hybrid theory, to trace out the environmental degrees of freedom, we introduce an analytic method based on superoperator algebra and Nakajima-Zwanzig projectors. The resulting master equation, describing the reduced system dynamics, is illustrated in the case of a qubit under phase noise during a finite-time measurement.
It is shown how any Lindbladian evolution with selfadjoint Lindblad operators, either Markovian or nonMarkovian, can be understood as an averaged random unitary evolution. Both mathematical and physical consequences are analyzed. First a simple and fast method to solve this kind of master equations is suggested and particularly illustrated with the phase-damped master equation for the multiphoton resonant Jaynes-Cummings model in the rotating-wave approximation. A generalization to some intrinsic decoherence models present in the literature is included. Under the same philosophy a proposal to …
The stroboscopic evolution of a time-periodically driven isolated quantum system can always be described by an effective time-independent Hamiltonian. Whether this concept can be generalized to open Floquet systems, described by a Markovian master equation with time-periodic Lindbladian generator, remains an open question. By using a two level system as a model, we explicitly show the existence of two well-defined parameter regions. In one region the stroboscopic evolution can be described by a Markovian master equation with a time-independent Floquet Lindbladian. In the other it cannot; but h…
An expression of the Lindbladian form is proposed that ensures an unambiguous time-continuous reduction of the initial system-pointer wave-packet to one in which the readings and the observable's values are aligned, formalized as the transition from an outer product to an inner product of the system's and apparatus' density matrices. The jump operators are in the basis of the observables, with uniquely determined parameters derived from the measurement set-up (thereby differing from S. Weinberg's Lindbladian resolution of wave-packet formalism) and conforming to Born's probability rules. The n…
The Lindblad form guarantees complete positivity of a Markovian quantum master equation (QME). However, its microscopic derivation for a quantum system weakly interacting with a thermal bath requires several approximations, which may result in inaccuracies in the QME. Recently, various Lindbladian QMEs were derived without resorting to the secular approximation from the Redfield equation which does not guarantee the complete positivity. Here we explicitly calculate, in a perturbative manner, the equilibrium steady states of these Lindbladian QMEs. We compare the results with the steady state o…
A general approach for transitionless quantum driving in open quantum systems is introduced. Under the assumption of adiabatic evolution for time-local master equations, we derive the generalized transitionless Lindbladian required to implement a shortcut to adiabaticity in an open system scenario. The general counter-diabatic Lindbladian obtained accounts for a phase freedom, which translates into a set of free parameters throughout the dynamics. We then discuss how our generalized approach allows us to recover the transitionless Lindbladian introduced by G. Vacanti et al. [New J. Phys. 16, 0…
In this paper, the mathematical framework providing a description of completely positive and trace preserving dynamics of open quantum systems is addressed. Special case of time-dependent Lindbladian governed by periodic Hamiltonian is concerned. It is proven, that appropriate trace preserving dynamical map of such periodically driven system may be constructed by application of Floquet theory. Appropriate Lindbladian and Markovian master equation in weak coupling regime and resulting dynamical map are constructed. Some examples of application of developed technique are given.
Markovian master equations, often called Liouvillians or Lindbladians, are used to describe decay and decoherence of a quantum system induced by that system's environment. While a natural environment is detrimental to fragile quantum properties, an engineered environment can drive the system toward exotic phases of matter or toward subspaces protected from noise. These cases often require the Lindbladian to have more than one steady state, and such Lindbladians are dissipative analogues of Hamiltonians with multiple ground states. This thesis studies Lindbladian extensions of topics commonplac…
We consider an open quantum system described by a Lindblad-type master equation with two times-scales. The fast time-scale is strongly dissipative and drives the system towards a low-dimensional decoherence-free space. To perform the adiabatic elimination of this fast relaxation, we propose a geometric asymptotic expansion based on the small positive parameter describing the time-scale separation. This expansion exploits geometric singular perturbation theory and center-manifold techniques. We conjecture that, at any order, it provides an effective slow Lindblad master equation and a completel…
We consider the Markovian Master Equation over matrix algebra $\mathbb{M}_d$, governed by periodic Lindbladian $L_t$ in standard (Kossakowski-Lindblad-Gorini-Sudarshan) form. It is shown that under simplifying assumption of commutativity, i.e. if $L_t L_{t'} = L_{t'}L_t$ for any moments of time $t,t'\in\mathbb{R}_+$, the Floquet normal form of resulting completely positive dynamical map is not guaranteed to be given by simultaneously globally Markovian maps. In fact, the periodic part of the solution is even shown to be necessarily non-Markovian. Two examples in algebra $\mathbb{M}_2$ are expl…
Lindbladian way for the relaxation time approximation, application to Kibble-Zurek processes due to environment temperature quench, and to Lindbladian perturbation theory
Master equations are a useful tool to describe the evolution of open quantum systems. In order to characterize the mathematical features and the physical origin of the dynamics, it is often useful to consider different kinds of master equations for the same system. Here, we derive an exact connection between the time-local and the integro-differential descriptions, focusing on the class of commutative dynamics. The use of the damping-basis formalism allows us to devise a general procedure to go from one master equation to the other and vice-versa, by working with functions of time and their La…
Away from equilibrium, the properties of open quantum systems depend on the details of their environment. A microscopic derivation of a master equation (ME) is therefore crucial. Of particular interest are Lindblad-type equations, not only because they provide the most general class of Markovian MEs, but also since they are the starting point for efficient quantum trajectory simulations. Lindblad-type MEs are commonly derived from the Born-Markov-Redfield equation via a rotating-wave approximation (RWA). However the RWA is valid only for ultra-weak system bath coupling and often fails to accur…
In this work, we studied the relaxation dynamics of coherences of different order present in a system of two coupled nuclear spins. We used a previously designed model for intrinsic noise present in such systems which considers the Lindblad master equation for Markovian relaxation. We experimentally created zero-, single- and double- quantum coherences in several two-spin systems and performed a complete state tomography and computed state fidelity. We experimentally measured the decay of zero- and double- quantum coherences in these systems. The experimental data fitted well to a model that c…
We study the dynamics of entanglement in the quantum Ising chain with dephasing dissipation in a Lindblad master equation form. We consider two unravelings which preserve the Gaussian form of the state, allowing to address large system sizes. The first unraveling gives rise to a quantum-state-diffusion dynamics, while the second one describes a specific form of quantum-jump evolution, suitably constructed to preserve Gaussianity. In the first case we find a crossover from area-law to logarithm-law entanglement scaling and draw the related phase diagram. In the second case we only find logarith…

Markovian reservoir engineering, in which time evolution of a quantum system is governed by a Lindblad master equation, is a powerful technique in studies of quantum phases of matter and quantum information. It can be used to drive a quantum system to a desired (unique) steady state, which can be an exotic phase of matter difficult to stabilize in nature. It can also be used to drive a system to a unitarily-evolving subspace, which can be used to store, protect, and process quantum information. In this paper, we derive a formula for the map corresponding to asymptotic (infinite-time) Lindbladi…
In this paper we consider the modelling and simulation of open quantum systems from a device engineering perspective. We derive master equations at different levels of approximation for a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) ring coupled to an ohmic bath. We demonstrate that the master equations we consider produce decoherences that are qualitatively and quantitativly dependent on both the level of approximation and the ring's external flux bias. We discuss the issues raised when seeking to obtain Lindbladian dissipation and show, in this case, that the external flux (which may …
Floquet engineering of isolated systems is often based on the concept of the effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonian, which describes the stroboscopic evolution of a periodically driven quantum system in steps of the driving period and which is routinely obtained analytically using high-frequency expansions. The generalization of these concepts to open quantum systems described by a Markovian master equation of Lindblad type turns out to be non-trivial: On the one hand, already for a two-level system two different phases can be distinguished, where the effective time-independent Floquet…

We adapt the Monte-Carlo wavefunction (MCWF) approach to treat the open-system spin dynamics of radical pairs subject to spin-selective recombination reactions. For these systems, non-Lindbladian master equations are widely employed, which account for recombination via the non trace-preserving Haberkorn superoperator in combination with reaction-dependent exchange and singlet-triplet dephasing terms. We show that this type of master equation can be accommodated in the MCWF approach, by introducing a second type of quantum jump that accounts for the reaction simply by suitably terminating the p…
With their constantly increasing peak performance and memory capacity, modern supercomputers offer new perspectives on numerical studies of open many-body quantum systems. These systems are often modeled by using Markovian quantum master equations describing the evolution of the system density operators. In this paper we address master equations of the Lindblad form, which are a popular theoretical tool in quantum optics, cavity quantum electrodynamics, and optomechanics. By using the generalized Gell-Mann matrices as a basis, any Lindblad equation can be transformed into a system of ordinary …
Dynamics of an open $N$-state quantum system is typically modeled with a Markovian master equation describing the evolution of the system's density operator. By using generators of $SU(N)$ group as a basis, the density operator can be transformed into a real-valued 'Bloch vector'. The Lindbladian, a super-operator which serves a generator of the evolution, %in the master equation, can be expanded over the same basis and recast in the form of a real matrix. Together, these expansions result is a non-homogeneous system of $N^2-1$ real-valued linear differential equations for the Bloch vector. No…
We use a non-Lindbladian master equation of the Scully-Lamb laser model for the analysis of light propagation in a parity-time symmetric photonic system composed of coupled active and passive whispering-gallery microresonators. Performing the semiclassical approximation, we obtain a set of two nonlinear coupled differential equations describing the time evolution of intracavity fields. These coupled equations are able to explain the experimentally-observed light non-reciprocity [Peng {\em et al.}, Nature Physics {\bf 10}, 394 (2014), Chang {\em et al.}, Nature Photonics {\bf 8}, 524 (2014)]. W…
We study noise-averaged observables for a system of exchange-coupled quantum spins (qubits), each subject to a stochastic drive, by establishing mappings onto stochastic models in the strong-noise limit. Averaging over noise yields Lindbladian equations of motion; when these are subjected to a strong-noise perturbative treatment, classical master equations are found to emerge. The dynamics of noise averages of operators displays diffusive behaviour or exponential relaxation, depending on whether the drive conserves one of the spin components or not. In the latter case, the second moment of ope…
Small quantum systems can now be continuously monitored experimentally which allows for the reconstruction of quantum trajectories. A peculiar feature of these trajectories is the emergence of jumps between the eigenstates of the observable which is measured. Using the Stochastic Master Equation (SME) formalism for continuous quantum measurements, we show that the density matrix of a system indeed shows a jumpy behavior when it is subjected to a tight measurement (even if the noise in the SME is Gaussian). We are able to compute the jump rates analytically for any system evolution, i.e. any Li…
We present a general formalism based on the variational principle for finding the time-optimal quantum evolution of mixed states governed by a master equation, when the Hamiltonian and the Lindblad operators are subject to certain constraints. The problem reduces to solving first a fundamental equation (the {\it quantum brachistochrone}) for the Hamiltonian, which can be written down once the constraints are specified, and then solving the constraints and the master equation for the Lindblad and the density operators. As an application of our formalism, we study a simple one-qubit model where …
This thesis examines seven topics in the areas of deterministic open-quantum-system dynamics, quantum measurements, and quantum error correction (QEC). The first topic concerns weak measurements and their universality as a means of generating quantum operations. It is shown that every generalized measurement can be implemented as a sequence of weak (infinitesimal) measurements. The second topic is an application of this result to the theory of entanglement. Necessary and sufficient differential conditions for entanglement monotones are derived and are used to find a new entanglement monotone f…
We consider the dissipative single-qubit circuit QED architecture in which the atomic transition frequency undergoes a weak external time-modulation. For sinusoidal modulation with linearly varying frequency we derive effective Hamiltonians that resemble the Landau-Zener problem of finite duration associated to a two- or multi-level systems. The corresponding off-diagonal coupling coefficients originate either from the rotating or the counter-rotating terms in the Rabi Hamiltonian, depending on the values of the modulation frequency. It is demonstrated that in the dissipation less case one can…
