Away from equilibrium, the properties of open quantum systems depend on the details of their environment. A microscopic derivation of a master equation (ME) is therefore crucial. Of particular interest are Lindblad-type equations, not only because they provide the most general class of Markovian MEs, but also since they are the starting point for efficient quantum trajectory simulations. Lindblad-type MEs are commonly derived from the Born-Markov-Redfield equation via a rotating-wave approximation (RWA). However the RWA is valid only for ultra-weak system bath coupling and often fails to accurately describe nonequilibrium processes. Here we derive an alternative Lindbladian approximation to the Redfield equation, which does not rely on ultra-weak system-bath coupling. Applying it to an extended Hubbard model coupled to Ohmic baths, we show that, especially away from equilibrium, it provides a good approximation in large parameter regimes where the RWA fails.

Recently defect production was investigated during non-unitary dynamics due to non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. By ramping up the non-Hermitian coupling linearly in time through an exceptional point, defects are produced in much the same way as approaching a Hermitian critical point. A generalized Kibble--Zurek scaling accounted for the ensuing scaling of the defect density in terms of the speed of the drive and the corresponding critical exponents. Here we extend this setting by adding the recycling term and considering the full Lindbladian time evolution of the problem with quantum jumps. We find …

We study dressed Bose-Einstein condensates in an atom chip radio-frequency trap. We show that in this system sufficiently strong dressing can be achieved to cause the widely used rotating wave approximation (RWA) to break down. We present a full calculation of the atom - field coupling which shows that the non-RWA contributions quantitatively alter the shape of the emerging dressed adiabatic potentials. The non-RWA contributions furthermore lead to additional allowed transitions between dressed levels. We use RF spectroscopy of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in the dressed state potentials …
Quantum optics and ultracold gases are established fields, but they almost do not overlap: the quantum nature of light is typically neglected in works on ultracold atoms. In our work the quantumness of both light and ultracold matter plays a key role. First, we show that light is a quantum nondemolition (QND) probe of many-body phases: they can be distinguished by correlations and full distribution functions (we consider bosons, fermions, and dipolar molecules). Light is not only sensitive to densities, but also to the matter-field interference. Second, we prove that the measurement backaction…
Environmental influences on the dynamics of a coupled qubit-oscillator system are studied analytically. We investigate the case of a quasi-degenerate qubit within the ultra-strong coupling regime for which the qubit frequency is much smaller than the frequency of the oscillator, and the coupling between the qubit and the oscillator is large, both of which invalidate the usually employed rotating wave approximation. In contrast to the standard quantum optics master equation, we explicitly take the qubit-oscillator coupling into account while microscopically deriving a dressed state master equat…
Exploring the impact of dimensionality on the quantum dynamics of interacting bosons in traps including particle correlations is an interesting but challenging task. Due to the different participating length scales the modelling of the short-range interactions in three dimensions plays a special role. We review different approaches for the latter and elaborate that for multi-configurational computational strategies finite range potentials are adequate resulting in the need of large grids to resolve the relevant length scales. This results in computational challenges which include also the expo…
We study effective light-matter interactions in a circuit QED system consisting of a single $LC$ resonator, which is coupled symmetrically to multiple superconducting qubits. Starting from a minimal circuit model, we demonstrate that in addition to the usual collective qubit-photon coupling the resulting Hamiltonian contains direct qubit-qubit interactions, which have a drastic effect on the ground and excited state properties of such circuits in the ultrastrong coupling regime. In contrast to a superradiant phase transition expected from the standard Dicke model, we find an opposite mechanism…
In cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), light-matter interaction is probed at its most fundamental level, where individual atoms are coupled to single photons stored in three-dimensional cavities. This unique possibility to experimentally explore the foundations of quantum physics has greatly evolved with the advent of circuit QED, where on-chip superconducting qubits and oscillators play the roles of two-level atoms and cavities, respectively. In the strong coupling limit, atom and cavity can exchange a photon frequently before coherence is lost. This important regime has been reached both i…
The interaction between an atom and the electromagnetic field inside a cavity has played a crucial role in the historical development of our understanding of light-matter interaction and is a central part of various quantum technologies, such as lasers and many quantum computing architectures. The emergence of superconducting qubits has allowed the realization of strong and ultrastrong coupling between artificial atoms and cavities. If the coupling strength $g$ becomes as large as the atomic and cavity frequencies ($Δ$ and $ω_{\rm o}$ respectively), the energy eigenstates including the ground …
Quantum optics with giant emitters has shown a new route for the observation and manipulation of non-Markovian properties in waveguide-QED. In this paper we extend the theory of giant atoms, hitherto restricted to the perturbative light-matter regime, to deal with the ultrastrong coupling regime. Using static and dynamical polaron methods we address the low energy subspace of a giant atom coupled to an Ohmic waveguide beyond the standard rotating wave approximation. We analyze the equilibrium properties of the system by computing the atomic frequency renormalization as a function of the coupli…
The measurement of the parity of two qubits is a primitive of quantum computing that allows creating deterministic entanglement. In the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics, a scheme to achieve parity measurement of two superconducting qubits has been proposed and analyzed under the usual rotating-wave approximation (RWA). We show that the same scheme can be carried over beyond this approximation, to the regime of ultrastrong coupling, with an improvement in the fidelity.
In this work we develop a semi-analytical variational ansatz to study the properties of few photon excitations interacting with a collection of quantum emitters in regimes that go beyond the rotating wave approximation. This method can be used to approximate both the static and dynamical properties of a superconducting qubit in an open transmission line, including the spontaneous emission spectrum and the resonances in scattering experiments. The approximations are quantitatively accurate for rather strong couplings, as shown by a direct comparison to Matrix-Product-State numerical methods, an…
