We discuss minimal covariant quantum space-time ${\cal M}^{1,3}_0$, which is defined through the minimal doubleton representation of $\mathfrak{so}(4,2)$. An elementary definition in terms of generators and relations is given. This space is shown to admit a semi-classical interpretation as quantized twistor space ${\mathbb C} P^{1,2}$, viewed as a quantized $S^2$-bundle over a 3+1-dimensional $k=-1$ FLRW space-time. In particular we find an over-complete set of (quasi-) coherent states, with a large hierarchy between the uncertainty scale and the geometric curvature scale. This provides an interesting background for the IKKT model, leading to a $\mathfrak{hs}$-extended gravitational gauge theory, which is free of ghosts due to the constraints on phase space arising from the doubleton representation.
We present locally scale (Weyl) covariant generalisation of Minimal Massive Gravity theory using the language of exterior differential forms on Riemann-Cartan-Weyl space-times. The theory is expressed by a locally scale invariant action and locally scale covariant field equations are found by a first order variational formalism.
We discuss possible definitions of the Faddeev-Popov matrix for the minimal linear covariant gauge on the lattice and present preliminary results for the ghost propagator.
We develop the calculation of the divergent part of one-loop covariant effective action for scalar fields minimally and non-minimally coupled to gravity using the generalized Schwinger-DeWitt technique. We derive the field-space metric using Vilkovisky's prescription and obtain new terms in the one-loop corrections which are absent in past literature with trivial choices of field-space metric. We further calculate the covariant versions of past results, obtained using the standard approach, by applying Barvinsky and Vilkovisky's extension to the ordinary Schwinger-DeWitt approach. For complete…
Starting from three minimal off-shell 4D, $\cal N$ = 1 supermultiplets, using constructions solely defined within the confines of the four dimensional field theory we show the existence of a "gadget" - a member of a class of metrics on the representation space of the supermultiplets - whose values directly and completely correspond to the values of a metric defined on the 1d, $N$ = 4 adinkra networks adjacency matrices corresponding to the projections of the four dimensional supermultiplets.
A simple argument indicates that covariant loop gravity (spinfoam theory) predicts a maximal acceleration, and hence forbids the development of curvature singularities. This supports the results obtained for cosmology and black holes using canonical methods.
The $D$-dimensional two-parameter deformed algebra with minimal length introduced by Kempf is generalized to a Lorentz-covariant algebra describing a ($D+1$)-dimensional quantized space-time. For D=3, it includes Snyder algebra as a special case. The deformed Poincaré transformations leaving the algebra invariant are identified. Uncertainty relations are studied. In the case of D=1 and one nonvanishing parameter, the bound-state energy spectrum and wavefunctions of the Dirac oscillator are exactly obtained.
The Margolus-Levitin Theorem is a limitation on the minimal evolving time of a quantum system from its initial state to its orthogonal state. It also supplies a bound on the maximal operations or events can occur within a volume of spacetime. We compare Margolus-Levitin Theorem with other form of limitation on minimal evolving time, and present covariant versions of Margolus-Levitin Theorem in special and general relativity respectively. The relation among entropy bound, maximum information flow and computational limit are discussed, by applying the covariant versions of Margolus-Levitin Theor…
We continue the development of the effective covariant methods for calculating the heat kernel and the one-loop effective action in quantum field theory and quantum gravity. The status of the low-energy approximation in quantum gauge theories and quantum gravity is discussed in detail on the basis of analyzing the local Schwinger - De Witt expansion. It is argued that the low-energy limit, when defined in a covariant way, should be related to background fields with covariantly constant curvature, gauge field strength and potential. Some new approaches for calculating the low-energy heat kernel…
In this work, we study the classical and quantum properties of the unique commutative Lorentz-covariant connection for loop quantum gravity. This connection has been found after solving the second-class constraints inherited from the canonical analysis of the Holst action without the time-gauge. We show that it has the property of lying in the conjugacy class of a pure $\su(2)$ connection, a result which enables one to construct the kinematical Hilbert space of the Lorentz-covariant theory in terms of the usual $\SU(2)$ spin-network states. Furthermore, we show that there is a unique Lorentz-c…
Inspired by the rich structure of covariant string field theory, we propose a minimal gauge invariant action for general massive integer spin n field. The action consists of four totally symmetric tensor fields of order respectively n, n-1, n-2 and n-3, and is invariant under the gauge transformation represented by two also totally symmetric fields of order n-1 and n-2. This action exactly has the same gauge structure as for the string field theory and we discuss general covariant gauge fixing procedure using the knowledge of string field theory. We explicitly construct the corresponding gauge…
It is rather well-known that spacetime singularities are not covariant under field redefinitions. A manifestly covariant approach to singularities in classical gravity was proposed in arXiv:2008.09387. In this paper, we start to extend this analysis to the quantum realm. We identify two types of covariant singularities in field space corresponding to geodesic incompleteness and ill-defined path integrals (hereby dubbed functional singularities). We argue that the former might not be harmful after all, whilst the latter makes all observables undefined. We show that the path-integral measure is …
We study the Quantum Focussing Conjecture (QFC) in curved spacetime. Noting that quantum corrections from integrating out massive fields generally induce a Gauss-Bonnet term, we study Einstein-Hilbert-Gauss-Bonnet gravity and show for $d\ge 5$ spacetime dimensions that weakly-curved solutions can violate the associated QFC for either sign of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. The nature of the violation shows that -- so long as the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is non-zero -- it will continue to arise for local effective actions containing arbitrary further higher curvature terms, and when gravity is coupled …
We review the canonical analysis of the Palatini action without going to the time gauge as in the standard derivation of Loop Quantum Gravity. This allows to keep track of the Lorentz gauge symmetry and leads to a theory of Covariant Loop Quantum Gravity. This new formulation does not suffer from the Immirzi ambiguity, it has a continuous area spectrum and uses spin networks for the Lorentz group. Finally, its dynamics can easily be related to Barrett-Crane like spin foam models.
We calculate the covariant one-loop quantum gravitational effective action for a scalar field model inspired by the recently proposed nonminimal natural inflation model. Our calculation is perturbative, in the sense that the effective action is evaluated in orders of background field, around a Minkowski background. The effective potential has been evaluated taking into account the finite corrections. An order-of-magnitude estimate of the one-loop corrections reveals that gravitational and non-gravitational corrections have same or comparable magnitudes.
We derive the 1-loop effective action of the cubic Galileon coupled to quantum-gravitational fluctuations in a background and gauge-independent manner, employing the covariant framework of DeWitt and Vilkovisky. Although the bare action respects shift symmetry, the coupling to gravity induces an effective mass to the scalar, of the order of the cosmological constant, as a direct result of the non-flat field-space metric, the latter ensuring the field-reparametrization invariance of the formalism. Within a gauge-invariant regularization scheme, we discover novel, gravitationally induced non-Gal…
The global counterpart of $k$-Poincare algebra is considered. The induced representations of this group are described. The explicit form of the covariant wave functions in the `minimal' (in Weinberg's sense) case is given.
The $D$-dimensional $(β, β')$-two-parameter deformed algebra introduced by Kempf is generalized to a Lorentz-covariant algebra describing a ($D+1$)-dimensional quantized space-time. In the D=3 and $β=0$ case, the latter reproduces Snyder algebra. The deformed Poincaré transformations leaving the algebra invariant are identified. It is shown that there exists a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position (minimal length). The Dirac oscillator in a 1+1-dimensional space-time described by such an algebra is studied in the case where $β'=0$. Extending supersymmetric quantum mechanical and shape-invari…
The Bohmian interpretation of the many-fingered time (MFT) Tomonaga-Schwinger formulation of quantum field theory (QFT) describes MFT fields, which provides a covariant Bohmian interpretation of QFT without introducing a preferred foliation of spacetime.
We consider GLq(N)-covariant quantum algebras with generators satisfying quadratic polynomial relations. We show that, up to some inessential arbitrariness, there are only two kinds of such quantum algebras, namely, the algebras with q-deformed commutation and q-deformed anticommutation relations. The connection with the bicovariant differential calculus on the linear quantum groups is disscussed.
We construct perturbative quantum gravity in a generally covariant way. In particular our construction is background independent. It is based on the locally covariant approach to quantum field theory and the renormalized Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. We do not touch the problem of nonrenormalizability and interpret the theory as an effective theory at large length scales.
Covariant relativistic quantum theory is used to study the covariant Green's function, which can be used to determine the proper time evolved wave functions that are solutions to the covariant Schrödinger type equation for a massive spin zero particle. The concept of covariant action is used to obtain the Green's function for an accelerated relativistic particle.
Loop quantum cosmology (LQC) seems to be predicting modified effective Friedmann equations without extra degrees of freedom. A puzzle arises if one decides to seek for a covariant effective action which would lead to the given Friedmann equation: The Einstein--Hilbert action is the only action that leads to second order field equations and, hence, there exists no covariant action which, under metric variation, leads to modified Friedmann equation without extra degrees of freedom. It is shown that, at least for isotropic models in LQC, this issue is naturally resolved and a covariant effective …
We present covariant quantization rules for nonsingular finite dimensional classical theories with flat and curved configuration spaces. In the beginning, we construct a family of covariant quantizations in flat spaces and Cartesian coordinates. This family is parametrized by a function $ω(θ)$, $θ\in\left( 1,0\right)$, which describes an ambiguity of the quantization. We generalize this construction presenting covariant quantizations of theories with flat configuration spaces but already with arbitrary curvilinear coordinates. Then we construct a so-called minimal family of covariant quantizat…
Covariant classical particle dynamics is described, and the associated covariant relativistic particle quantum mechanics is derived. The invariant symmetric bracket is defined on the space of quantum amplitudes, and its relation to a generalized Hamiltonian dynamics and to a covariant Schrödinger type equation is shown. Examples for relativistic potential problems are solved. Mathematically and physically acceptable probability densities for the Klein-Gordon equation and for the Dirac equation are derived, and a new continuity equation for each case is given. The quantum distribution for mass …
We present for the first time an explicit exposition of quantum corrections within the cubic Galileon theory including the effect of quantum gravity, in a background- and gauge-invariant manner, employing the field-reparametrisation approach of the covariant effective action at 1-loop. We show that the consideration of gravitational effects in combination with the non-linear derivative structure of the theory reveals new interactions at the perturbative level, which manifest themselves as higher-operators in the associated effective action, which' relevance is controlled by appropriate ratios …
We propose a canonical description of the dynamics of quantum systems on a class of Robertson-Walker space-times. We show that the worldline of an observer in such space-times determines a unique orbit in the local conformal group SO(4,1) of the space-time and that this orbit determines a unique transport on the space-time. For a quantum system on the space-time modeled by a net of local algebras, the associated dynamics is expressed via a suitable family of ``propagators''. In the best of situations, this dynamics is covariant, but more typically the dynamics will be ``quasi-covariant'' in a …
It is shown that there exists an isomorphism between q-oscillator systems covariant under $ SU_q(n) $ and $ SU_{q^{-1}}(n) $. By the isomorphism, the defining relations of $ SU_{q^{-1}}(n) $ covariant q-oscillator system are transmuted into those of $ SU_q(n) $. It is also shown that the similar isomorphism exists for the system of q-oscillators covariant under the quantum supergroup $ SU_q(n/m) $. Furthermore the cases of q-deformed Lie (super)algebras constructed from covariant q-oscillator systems are considered. The isomorphisms between q-deformed Lie (super)algebras can not obtained by th…
The principle of local covariance which was recently introduced admits a generally covariant formulation of quantum field theory. It allows a discussion of structural properties of quantum field theory as well as the perturbative construction of renormalized interacting models on generic curved backgrounds and opens in principle the way towards a background independent perturbative quantization of gravity.
We discuss quantum deformation of the affine transformation group and its Lie algebra. It is shown that the quantum algebra has a non-cocommutative Hopf algebra structure, simple realizations and quantum tensor operators. The deformation of the group is achieved by using the adjoint representation. The elements of quantum matrix form a Hopf algebra. Furthermore, we construct a differential calculus which is covariant with respect to the action of the quantum matrix.
The algebraic formulation of the quantum group gauge models in the framework of the $R$-matrix approach to the theory of quantum groups is given. We consider gauge groups taking values in the quantum groups and noncommutative gauge fields transformed as comodules under the coaction of the gauge quantum group $ G_{q}$. Using this approach we construct the quantum deformations of the topological Chern-Simons models, non-abelian gauge theories and the Einstein gravity. The noncommutative fields in these models generate $ G_{q}$-covariant quantum algebras.
The quantum algebra of observables of the massive closed bosonic string in 1+3 dimensions has been developed so far in the rest frame of the string. In this paper a method to write this algebra in a manifestly Lorentz covariant form is explained and compared with an alternative approach in the literature.
We amend the incorrect discussion in Nucl. Phys. B 886 (2014) 569 [1] concerning the numerical examples considered there. In particular, we discuss the viability of minimal radiative models of Resonant Leptogenesis and prove that no asymmetry can be generated at $\mathcal{O}(h^4)$ in these scenarios. We present a minimal modification of the model considered in [1], where electroweak-scale right-handed Majorana neutrinos can easily accommodate both successful leptogenesis and observable signatures at Lepton Number and Flavour Violation experiments. The importance of the fully flavour-covariant …
We generalize the covariant c-map found in hep-th/0701214 including perturbative quantum corrections. We also perform explicitly the superconformal quotient from the hyperkahler cone obtained by the quantum c-map to the quaternion-Kahler space, which is the moduli space of hypermultiplets. As a result, the perturbatively corrected metric on the moduli space is found in a simplified form comparing to the expression known in the literature.
We present a construction of string--localized covariant free quantum fields for a large class of irreducible (ray) representations of the Poincare group. Among these are the representations of mass zero and infinite spin, which are known to be incompatible with point-like localized fields. (Based on joint work with B.Schroer and J.Yngvason [13].)
A covariant - tensor method for $SU(2)_{q}$ is described. This tensor method is used to calculate q - deformed Clebsch - Gordan coefficients. The connection with covariant oscillators and irreducible tensor operators is established. This approach can be extended to other quantum groups.
A new approach to the model-independent description of quantum field theories will be introduced in the present work. The main feature of this new approach is to incorporate in a local sense the principle of general covariance of general relativity, thus giving rise to the concept of a "locally covariant quantum field theory". Such locally covariant quantum field theories will be described mathematically in terms of covariant functors between the categories, on one side, of globally hyperbolic spacetimes with isometric embeddings as morphisms and, on the other side, of *-algebras with unital i…
We describe the deformed covariant phase space corresponding to the so-called kappa-deformation of D=4 relativistic symmetries, with quantum ``time'' coordinate and Heisenberg algebra obtained according to the Heisenberg double construction. The associated modified uncertainty relations are analyzed, and in particular it is shown that these relations are consistent with independent estimates of quantum-gravity limitations on the measurability of space-time distances.
It is shown that the idea of ``minimal'' coupling to gauge fields can be conveniently implemented in the proper time formalism by identifying the equivalent of a ``covariant derivative''. This captures some of the geometric notion of the gauge field as a connection. The proper time equation is also generalized so that the gauge invariances associated with higher spin massive modes can be made manifest, at the free level, using loop variables. Some explicit examples are worked out illustrating these ideas.
We discuss a possible definition of the Faddeev-Popov matrix for the minimal linear covariant gauge on the lattice and present first results for the ghost propagator. We consider Yang-Mills theory in four space-time dimensions, for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge groups.
A framework which combines ideas from Connes' noncommutative geometry, or spectral geometry, with recent ideas on generally covariant quantum field theory, is proposed in the present work. A certain type of spectral geometries modelling (possibly noncommutative) globally hyperbolic spacetimes is introduced in terms of so-called globally hyperbolic spectral triples. The concept is further generalized to a category of globally hyperbolic spectral geometries whose morphisms describe the generalization of isometric embeddings. Then a local generally covariant quantum field theory is introduced as …
The quantisation of scalar field theory and Einstein gravity is investigated using a fully covariant background field formalism, including Vilkovisky-DeWitt corrections. The one-loop divergences, which are relevant for the consistency of the low-energy effective theory, differ substantially from non-covariant calculations. The results are applied to the effective action of Higgs inflation, with a non-minimal gravity coupling parameter $ξ$, where the use of a formalism which is independent of field redefinitions is particularly important. Consistency of the one-loop effective action requires th…
A model-independent, locally generally covariant formulation of quantum field theory over four-dimensional, globally hyperbolic spacetimes will be given which generalizes similar, previous approaches. Here, a generally covariant quantum field theory is an assignment of quantum fields to globally hyperbolic spacetimes with spin-structure where each quantum field propagates on the spacetime to which it is assigned. Imposing very natural conditions such as local general covariance, existence of a causal dynamical law, fixed spinor- or tensor-type for all quantum fields of the theory, and that the…
The q-deformed traces and orbits for the two parametric quantum groups $GL_{qp}(2)$ and $GL_{qp}(1|1)$ are defined. They are subsequently used in the construction of $q$-orbit invariants for these groups. General $qp$-(super)oscillator commutation relations are obtained which remain invariant under the coactions of groups $GL_{qp}(2)$ and $GL_{qp}(1|1)$. The $GL_{qp}(2)$ covariant deformed algebra is deduced in terms of the bilinears of bosonic $qp$-oscillators which turns out to be a central extension of the Witten-type deformation of $sl(2)$ algebra. In the case of the supergroup $GL_{qp}(1|…
There exists a unique class of local Higher Spin Gravities with propagating massless fields in $4d$ - Chiral Higher Spin Gravity. Originally, it was formulated in the light-cone gauge. We construct a covariant form of this theory as a Free Differential Algebra up to NLO, i.e. at the level of equations of motion. It also contains the recently discovered covariant forms of the higher spin extensions of SDYM and SDGR, as well as SDYM and SDGR themselves. From the mathematical viewpoint the result is equivalent to taking the minimal model (in the sense of $L_\infty$-algebras) of the jet-space exte…
We give a noncommutative version of the complex projective space CP^2 and show that scalar QFT on this space is free of UV divergencies. The tools necessary to investigate Quantum fields on this fuzzy CP^2 are developed and possibilities to introduce spinors and Dirac operators are discussed.
The reduced covariant phase space associated with the three-dimensional Euclidean Nambu-Goto action can be identified, via the Enneper-Weierstrass representation of minimal surfaces, with the space of complex analytic functions plus three translational zero modes. The symplectic structure induced trough the Enneper-Weierstrass map can be explicitly computed. Quantization is then straightforward, yielding as a result a target-space Euclidean-invariant, positive-definite, two-dimensional quantum field theory. The physical states are shown to correspond with particles states of integer spin and a…
We consider the general D=4 (10+10)-dimensional kappa-deformed quantum phase space as given by Heisenberg double \mathcal{H} of D=4 kappa-deformed Poincare-Hopf algebra H. The standard (4+4) -dimensional kappa - deformed covariant quantum phase space spanned by kappa - deformed Minkowski coordinates and commuting momenta generators ({x}_{μ},{p}_{μ}) is obtained as the subalgebra of \mathcal{H}. We study further the property that Heisenberg double defines particular quantum spaces with Hopf algebroid structure. We calculate by using purely algebraic methods the explicite Hopf algebroid structur…
It is argued that the formal rules of correspondence between local observation procedures and observables do not exhaust the entire physical content of generally covariant quantum field theory. This result is obtained by expressing the distinguishing features of the local kinematical structure of quantum field theory in the generally covariant context in terms of a translocal structure which carries the totality of the nonlocal kinematical informations in a local region. This gives rise to a duality principle at the dynamical level which emphasizes the significance of the underlying translocal…
Entropic Dynamics (ED) is an inference-based framework that seeks to construct dynamical theories of physics without assuming the conventional formalism --- the Hamiltonians, Poisson brackets, Hilbert spaces, etc. --- typically associated with physics. In this work we develop an ED of scalar fields that is both quantum and manifestly covariant. The framework for accomplishing this is inspired by the covariant methods of Dirac, Teitelboim, and Kuchar. In addition to the ostensible result of a covariant quantum ED, we also show how the covariance requirement of path independence proposed by Teit…
In this paper some techniques useful to perform quantum field theory computations in a covariant manner are reviewed. In particular the background field gauge, the zeta function regularization and the heat kernel approach are highlighted. Some detailed calculations of the Schwinger-de Witt coefficients of the small proper time expansion of the heat kernel are also repeated in detail. This work reports lectures given by Enrique Álvarez at the IFT-UAM-CSIC in Madrid.
We consider quantum holonomy of some three-dimensional general covariant non-Abelian field theory in Landau gauge and confirm a previous result partially proven. We show that quantum holonomy retains metric independence after explicit gauge fixing and hence possesses the topological property of a link invariant. We examine the generalized quantum holonomy defined on a multi-component link and discuss its relation to a polynomial for the link.
The physical interpretation of the main notions of the quantum group theory (coproduct, representations and corepresentations, action and coaction) is discussed using the simplest examples of $q$-deformed objects (quantum group $F_q(GL(2))$, quantum algebra $sl_q(2)$, $q$-oscillator and $F_q$-covariant algebra.) Appropriate reductions of the covariant algebra of second rank $q$-tensors give rise to the algebras of the $q$-oscillator and the $q$-sphere. A special covariant algebra related to the reflection equation corresponds to the braid group in a space with nontrivial topology.
We extend our formulation of the covariant quantum superstring as a WZNW model with N=2 superconformal symmetry to N=4. The two anticommuting BRST charges in the N=4 multiplet of charges are the usual BRST charge Q_S and a charge Q_V proposed by Dijkgraaf, Verlinde and Verlinde for topological models. Using our recent work on "gauging cosets", we then construct a further charge Q_C which anticommutes with Q_S + Q_V and which is intended for the definition of the physical spectrum.
In this paper we introduce a modified covariant quantum algebra based in the so-called Quesne-Tkachuk algebra. By means of a deformation procedure we arrive at a class of higher derivative models of gravity. The study of the particle spectra of these models reveals an equivalence with the physical content of the well-known renormalizable and super-renormalizable higher derivative gravities. The particle spectrum exhibits the presence of spurious complex ghosts and, in light of this problem, we suggest an interesting interpretation in the context of minimal length theories. Also, a discussion r…
A set of integral relations for rotational and translational zero modes in the vicinity of the classical soliton solution are derived from the particle-like properties of the latter. The validity of these all relations is considered for a number of soliton models in 2+1- and 3+1-dimensions.
