Loop quantum gravitational effects can resolve the central singularity of black holes while potentially leaving tiny traces of quantization in the exterior spacetime. We show the way these residues can, in principle, be explored using tidal Love numbers (TLNs). We consider loop quantized Schwarzschild black hole, in particular the Ashtekar-Olmedo-Singh (AOS) model, and study the static response to external tidal fields of spin zero (scalar field), spin one (vector field), and spin two (axial gravitational field) types. We find that, in contrast to the classical theory, where TLNs vanish, they are non-vanishing and negative for all three responses and for all multipoles. Besides, the magnitude of TLNs decreases as the black hole mass increases, and TLNs, in response to the axial gravitational field, have the largest magnitude among these three responses. Our results show that for black holes of mass $M \gtrsim 4.3 \times 10^{4} M_{\textrm{Pl}}$, the AOS model is consistent with current and next-generation detection limits for TLNs. Our findings suggest that the quantum deformability of loop quantum black holes, arising from the inherent fuzziness of spacetime geometry, reveals a fundamentally distinct internal structure compared to their classical counterparts. This unique feature manifests as quantum hair, which, in principle, can be detected by future observations.
In this paper, we derive the master equations for gravitational perturbations of vector and scalar type for static vacuum Lovelock black holes. Together with our previous work on the tensor type perturbation, we now provide the full set of master equations that governs all types of gravitational perturbations of static vacuum Lovelock black holes in any dimensions.
In Newtonian gravitational theory, a tidal Love number relates the mass multipole moment created by tidal forces on a spherical body to the applied tidal field. The Love number is dimensionless, and it encodes information about the body's internal structure. We present a relativistic theory of Love numbers, which applies to compact bodies with strong internal gravities; the theory extends and completes a recent work by Flanagan and Hinderer, which revealed that the tidal Love number of a neutron star can be measured by Earth-based gravitational-wave detectors. We consider a spherical body defo…
A relativistic theory of surficial Love numbers, which characterize the surface deformation of a body subjected to tidal forces, was initiated by Damour and Nagar. We revisit this effort in order to extend it, clarify some of its aspects, and simplify its computational implementation. First, we refine the definition of surficial Love numbers proposed by Damour and Nagar, and formulate it directly in terms of the deformed curvature of the body's surface, a meaningful geometrical quantity. Second, we develop a unified theory of surficial Love numbers that applies equally well to material bodies …
Quasi-universal relations connecting the tidal deformability and the quadrupole moment of individual neutron stars are predicted by theoretical computations, but have not been measured experimentally. However, such relations are employed during the interpretation of gravitational waves and, therefore, have a direct impact on the interpretation of real data. In this work, we study how quasi-universal relations can be tested and measured from gravitational wave signals connected to binary neutron star coalescences. We study a population of $120$ binary neutron star systems and find that Advanced…
Tidal deformability of a coalescing neutron star subjected to an external tidal field plays an important role in our probe for the structure and properties of compact stars. In particular, the tidal love number provides valuable information about the external gravitational field responsible for deforming the star. In this article, we compute the tidal love number of a particular class of anisotropic stars and analyze the impacts of anisotropy and compactness on the tidal love number.
We argue that the Smarr Formula for black holes can be expressed in terms of a Noether charge surface integral plus a suitable volume integral, for any gravitational theory. The integrals can be constructed as an application of Wald's formalism. We apply this formalism to compute the mass and the Smarr Formula for static Lovelock black holes. Finally, we propose a new prescription for Wald's entropy in the case of Lovelock black holes, which takes into account topological contributions to the entropy functional.
One of the macroscopically measurable effects of gravity is the tidal deformability of astrophysical objects, which can be quantified by their tidal Love numbers. For planets and stars, these numbers measure the resistance of their material against the tidal forces, and the resulting contribution to their gravitational multipole moments. According to general relativity, nonrotating deformed black holes, instead, show no addition to their gravitational multipole moments, and all of their Love numbers are zero. In this paper we explore different configurations of nonrotating compact and ultracom…
In this work, we have assumed the generalized Vaidya solution in Lovelock theory of gravity in $(n+2)$-dimensions. It has been shown that Gauss-Bonnet gravity, dimensionally continued Lovelock gravity and pure Lovelock gravity can be constructed by suitable choice of parameters. We have investigated the occurrence of singularities formed by the gravitational collapse in above three particular forms of Lovelock theory of gravity. The dependence of the nature of singularity on the existence of radial null geodesic for Vaidya space-time has been specially considered. In all the three models, we h…
The exterior gravitational field of a slowly-rotating neutron star can be characterized by its multipole moments, the first few being the neutron star mass, moment of inertia, and quadrupole moment to quadratic order in spin. In principle, all of these quantities depend on the neutron star's internal structure, and thus, on unknown nuclear physics at supra-nuclear energy densities. We here find relations between the moment of inertia, the Love numbers and the quadrupole moment (I-Love-Q relations) that do not depend sensitively on the neutron star's internal structure. Three important conseque…

We consider spherically symmetric black holes in generic Lovelock gravity. Using geometrodynamical variables we do a complete Hamiltonian analysis, including derivation of the super-Hamiltonian and super-momentum constraints and verification of suitable boundary conditions for asymptotically flat black holes. Our analysis leads to a remarkably simple fully reduced Hamiltonian for the vacuum gravitational sector that provides the starting point for the quantization of Lovelock block holes. Finally, we derive the completely reduced equations of motion for the collapse of a spherically symmetric …
We study the interaction between massive scalar fields and the gravitational field produced by a higher dimensional Schwarzschild solution in a string cloud model. Exact analytical solutions of both angular and radial parts of the Klein--Gordon equation are obtained in terms of the three-dimensional spherical harmonics and general Heun functions, respectively. From these solutions, we examine the interesting physical phenomena related to the Hawking radiation and resonant frequencies.
The gravitational polarizability properties of black holes are compared and contrasted with their electromagnetic polarizability properties. The "shape" or "height" multipolar Love numbers h_l of a black hole are defined and computed. They are then compared to their electromagnetic analogs h_l^{EM}. The Love numbers h_l give the height of the l-th multipolar "tidal bulge" raised on the horizon of a black hole by faraway masses. We also discuss the shape of the tidal bulge raised by a test mass m, in the limit where m gets very close to the horizon.
In this paper we show that pure Lovelock static Schwarzschild's analogue black hole in dimensions $d>3N+1$, where $N$ is the degree of Lovelock polynomial action, is stable even though pure Gauss-Bonnet $N=2$ black hole is unstable in dimension $d<7$. We also discuss and compare quasinormal modes for pure Lovelock and the corresponding Einstein black hole in the same dimension. We find that perturbations decay with characteristic time which is weakly dimensional dependent as it depends only on the gravitational potential of the background solution, while frequency of oscillations however depen…
In Lovelock theories, gravity can travel faster or slower than light. The causal structure is determined by the characteristic hypersurfaces. We generalise a recent result of Izumi to prove that any Killing horizon is a characteristic hypersurface for all gravitational degrees of freedom of a Lovelock theory. Hence gravitational signals cannot escape from the region inside such a horizon. We investigate the hyperbolicity of Lovelock theories by determining the characteristic hypersurfaces for various backgrounds. First we consider Ricci flat type N spacetimes. We show that characteristic hyper…
Ground-based gravitational wave detectors may be able to constrain the nuclear equation of state using the early, low frequency portion of the signal of detected neutron star - neutron star inspirals. In this early adiabatic regime, the influence of a neutron star's internal structure on the phase of the waveform depends only on a single parameter lambda of the star related to its tidal Love number, namely the ratio of the induced quadrupole moment to the perturbing tidal gravitational field. We analyze the information obtainable from gravitational wave frequencies smaller than a cutoff freque…
In this paper, we present the asymptotically flat black hole solutions for arbitrary values of coefficients in third order Lovelock gravity, and then derive gravitational mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the black holes. In addition, based on a Hamilton-Jacobi approach beyond the semiclassical approximation, we compute the corrected temperature and entropy of the third order Lovelock black holes in seven dimensional spacetimes. By considering the coefficients α2 = α and α3 = α2/3, we obtain a special black hole solution. Later, we perform the local and global stability analysis of the …
This thesis is divided in two separate parts, the first concerned with gravitational aspects of Lovelock theories, the second with some of their holographic applications.
We present an alternative derivation of the gravitational field equations for Lovelock gravity starting from the Newton's law, which is closer in spirit to the thermodynamic description of gravity. As a warm up exercise, we have explicitly demonstrated that projecting the Riemann curvature tensor appropriately and taking a cue from Poisson's equation, the Einstein's equations immediately follow. The above derivation naturally generalizes to Lovelock gravity theories where an appropriate curvature tensor satisfying the symmetries as well as the Bianchi derivative properties of the Riemann tenso…
A standard candidate for quasilocal energy in general relativity is the Brown-York energy, which is essentially a two dimensional surface integral of the extrinsic curvature on the two-boundary of a spacelike hypersurface referenced to flat spacetime. Several years back one of us had conjectured that the black hole horizon is defined by equipartition of gravitational and non-gravitational energy. By employing the above definition of quasilocal Brown-York energy, we have verified the equipartition conjecture for static charged and charged axi-symmetric blck holes in general relativity. We have …
The response of a gravitating object to an external tidal field is encoded in its Love numbers, which identically vanish for classical blackholes (BHs). Here we show, using standard time-independent quantum perturbation theory, that for a quantum BH, generically, the Love numbers are nonvanishing and negative, and that their magnitude depends on the lowest lying levels of the quantum spectrum of the BH. We calculate the quadrupolar electric quantum Love number of nonrotating BHs and show that it depends most strongly on the first excited level of the quantum BH. We then compare our results to …
Gravitational-wave cosmology began in 2017 with the observation of the gravitational waves emitted in the merger of two neutron stars, and the coincident observation of the electromagnetic emission that followed. Although only a $30\%$ measurement of the Hubble constant was achieved, future observations may yield more precise measurements either through other coincident events or through cross correlation of gravitational-wave events with galaxy catalogs. Here, we implement a new way to measure the Hubble constant without an electromagnetic counterpart and through the use of the binary Love re…
Gravitational-wave (GW) observations provide a wealth of information on the nature and properties of black holes. Among these, tidal Love numbers or the multipole moments of the inspiralling and final objects are key to a number of constraints. Here, we consider these observations in the context of higher-dimensional scenarios, with flat large extra dimensions. We show that -- as might be anticipated, but not always appreciated in the literature -- physically motivated set-ups are unconstrained by gravitational-wave data. Dynamical processes that do not excite the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes lead …
In this work it is shown that the thermodynamics of regular black holes with a cosmological horizon, which are solutions of Lovelock gravity, determines that they must evolve either into a state where the black hole and cosmological horizons have reached thermal equilibrium or into an extreme black hole geometry where the black hole and cosmological horizons have merged. This differs from the behavior of Schwarzschild de Sitter geometry which evolves into a de Sitter space, the ground state of the space of solutions. This occurs due to a phase transition of the heat capacity of the black hole …
Observations of gravitational waves from inspiralling neutron star binaries---such as GW170817---can be used to constrain the nuclear equation of state by placing bounds on stellar tidal deformability. For slowly rotating neutron stars, the response to a weak quadrupolar tidal field is characterized by four internal-structure-dependent constants called "Love numbers." The tidal Love numbers $k_2^\text{el}$ and $k_2^\text{mag}$ measure the tides raised by the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic components of the applied field, and the rotational-tidal Love numbers $\mathfrak{f}^\text{o}$ and $\…
In this present work, we suggest studying neutron star with a conformal coupling by using the analytical expressions of realistic equations of state. The equations of perturbed and nonperturbed metrics, scalar field and the pressure of the matter are derived in order to observe the effects of the conformal coupling on the mass, radius and tidal love number of polar and axial types. The numerical and the analytical analysis show a different comportment of our model from GR by varying the value of the parameters in the model. We showed also for a particular case that the scalar field becomes van…
The metric outside a compact body deformed by a quadrupolar tidal field is universal up to its Love numbers, constants which encode the tidal response's dependence on the body's internal structure. For a non-rotating body, the deformed external geometry is characterized by the familiar gravitational Love numbers $K_2^{\text{el}}$ and $K_2^{\text{mag}}$. For a slowly rotating body, these must be supplemented by rotational-tidal Love numbers, which measure the response to couplings between the body's spin and the external tidal field. By integrating the interior field equations, I find that the …
The open question of whether a black hole can become tidally deformed by an external gravitational field has profound implications for fundamental physics, astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. Love tensors characterize the tidal deformability of compact objects such as astrophysical (Kerr) black holes under an external static tidal field. We prove that all Love tensors vanish identically for a Kerr black hole in the nonspinning limit or for an axisymmetric tidal perturbation. In contrast to this result, we show that Love tensors are generically nonzero for a spinning black hole. Spec…
An important physical phenomenon that manifests itself during the inspiral of two orbiting compact objects is the tidal deformation of each under the gravitational influence of its companion. In the case of binary neutron star mergers, this tidal deformation and the associated Love numbers have been used to probe properties of dense matter and the nuclear equation of state. Non-spinning black holes on the other hand have a vanishing (field) tidal Love number in General Relativity. This pertains to the deformation of the asymptotic gravitational field. In certain cases, especially in the late s…
The black hole information paradox is among the most outstanding puzzles in physics. I argue here there is yet another black hole quandary which, in light of the recent direct detection of gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO, reveals a new window to probe the nature of spacetime in the forthcoming era of 'precision gravity.'
We study thermodynamics of black hole solutions in Lanczos-Lovelock AdS gravity in d+1 dimensions coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics and a Stueckelberg scalar field. This class of theories is used in the context of gauge/gravity duality to describe a high-temperature superconductor in d dimensions. Larger number of coupling constants in the gravitational side is necessary to widen a domain of validity of physical quantities in a dual QFT. We regularize the gravitational action and find the finite conserved quantities for a planar black hole with scalar hair. Then we derive the quantum statis…
The extension of the general relativity theory to higher dimensions, so that the field equations for the metric remain of second order, is done through the Lovelock action. This action can also be interpreted as the dimensionally continued Euler characteristics of lower dimensions. The theory has many constant coefficients apparently without any physical meaning. However, it is possible, in a natural way, to reduce to two (the cosmological and Newton's constant) these several arbitrary coefficients, yielding a restricted Lovelock gravity. In this process one separates theories in even dimensio…
When in a tight binary, the mutual tidal deformations of neutron stars imprint onto observables, encoding information about their internal structure at supranuclear densities and gravity in the extreme-gravity regime. Gravitational wave observations of their late binary inspiral may serve as a tool to extract the individual tidal deformabilities, but this is made difficult by degeneracies between them in the gravitational wave model. We here resolve this problem by discovering approximately universal relations between dimensionless combinations of the individual tidal deformabilities. We show …
The tidal deformability of a self-gravitating object leaves an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal of an inspiral which is paramount to measure the internal structure of the binary components. We unveil here a surprisingly unnoticed effect: in the extreme-mass ratio limit the tidal Love number of the central object (i.e. the quadrupole moment induced by the tidal field of its companion) affects the gravitational waveform at the leading order in the mass ratio. This effect acts as a magnifying glass for the tidal deformability of supermassive objects but was so far neglected, probably beca…
Precision cosmology is crucial to understand the different energy components in the Universe and their evolution through cosmic time. Gravitational wave sources are standard sirens that can accurately map out distances in the Universe. Together with the source redshift information, we can then probe the expansion history of the Universe. We explore the capabilities of various gravitational-wave detector networks to constrain different cosmological models while employing separate waveform models for inspiral and post-merger part of the gravitational wave signal from equal mass binary neutron st…
Future gravitational wave detectors have been projected to be able to probe the nature of compact objects in great detail. In this work, we study the potential observability of the small length scale physics near black hole horizon with the tidal deformability of the compact objects in an inspiraling binary. We find that it is possible to probe them with extreme mass ratio inspirals. We discuss how the quantum effects can affect the gravitational wave observables. This as a consequence is bound to shape our understanding of the quantum scale near the horizon.

Gravitational waves from the final stages of inspiralling binary neutron stars are expected to be one of the most important sources for ground-based gravitational wave detectors. The masses of the components are determinable from the orbital and chirp frequencies during the early part of the evolution during which tidal effects provide small correction; however, during this phase the signal is relatively clean. The accumulated phase shift due to tidal corrections is characterized by a single quantity, the Love number, which is sensitive to the compactness parameter M/R and the star's internal …
Rossby modes (r-modes) of rotating neutron stars can be excited by the gravitomagnetic forces in coalescing binary systems. The previous study by Flanagan and Racine [Phys. Rev. D 75, 044001 (2007)] showed that this kind of dynamical tide (DT) can induce phase shifts of 0.1 rad on gravitational waveforms, which is detectable by third-generation (3G) detectors. In this paper, we study the impact of this DT on measuring neutron-star parameters in the era of 3G detectors. We incorporate two universal relations among neutron star properties predicted by different equations of state: (i) the well-k…
Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is an alternative theory to general relativity which breaks Lorentz invariance in order to achieve an ultraviolet complete and power-counting renormalizable theory of gravity. In the low energy limit, Hořava-Lifshitz gravity coincides with a vector-tensor theory known as khronometric gravity. The deviation of khronometric gravity from general relativity can be parametrized by three coupling constants: $α$, $β$, and $λ$. Solar system experiments and gravitational wave observations impose stringent bounds on $α$ and $β$, while $λ$ is still relatively unconstrained ($λ\les…
